When i attempt to start the vehicle, the security light flashes, radio locks up and the car stalls. after reading the manual and contacting a dealer, i was advised to turn the key into the on position and wait for the security light to stop flashing, then start the car. the first time this happened it took over an hour for the car to start. the second time, it took over an hour as well. this is the third time and im on day 2 of leaving the key in the on position and nothing is happening. i contacted the dealer again and at first i was told i needed to bring it in for a security system reset. then i was told that i need to replace bcm without anyone actually looking at my car. after researching online, there are several complaints regarding this same issue on model 2000-2005. gm is clearly aware of this defect but refuse recall. those that have paid over $500 to fix replace the bcm are still having the same issue. can gm be held accountable for the flaw that they are aware of yet charging people hundreds of dollars to fix a part that may not be broken? *tr

Multiple times the key has been unable to turn in the ignition. usually after a few minutes the key will turn and i am able to start the car. however, on september 30, i was unable to turn the key in the ignition and the car has not started since. i can not turn the car on to put it in neutral. the key will not turn at all and i read that this is actually a common problem. *tr

Recently, when i arrived at a local business center, i attempted to turn the ignition key to off and i could not. the key was stuck in the acc position, and thus could not be removed. in addition, all the accessories were on. reluctantly, i had to leave my car in a public parking lot with the power on and my keys dangling in the ignition. when i drove home, once again the key would not rotate to the off position -- it remained at acc. i attempted many fixes for the problem -- repeatedly shifting into park, turning the steering wheel, etc. i was forced to leave the car on, and with the key in the ignition. my battery in time would be dead. perhaps worse, my car was just sitting there waiting for an opportunistic thief. i searched online for help and found scores of reports of impala owners who had the identical problem. the ignition key gets stuck in acc and can't be removed. it's an intolerable situation because you can't secure your car. not to mention that you can't turn the accessories off, so you have a guaranteed drained battery. here is just one forum where this specific impala problem was discussed: http://repairpal.com/ignition-key-stuck-due-to-failed-shifter-020. chevrolet should issue a recall and fix this problem. there's no way one can force the key out of the ignition, and the only means of avoiding the drained-battery problem is to remove the battery cables. that's not technology, that's a nightmare. my car is constantly at risk of being stolen, and i'm hooking and unhooking the battery cables all the time. this is a very pervasive and persistent problem with impala owners. just this one web site alone (above) contains detailed accounts by scores of complainants, and it's but one of many. we paid too much for these cars to be ripped off and jerked around. *tr

Low-beam headlights have failed to come on and will no longer function. high-beams and daytime running lights still function, but at dusk the low-beams will fail to light; however high-beams can be used instead creating a traffic hazard. i replaced the multi-function switch with a new switch, and replaced the relay with a known good working relay. the relay will still work and actuate indicating that the relay is not the problem. i checked the bulbs and they are still good, fuses are fine, 12v positive power is present at the bulb, but the ground is not activated on either side at any time. all problems point to a bad body control module (bcm). i have checked online and there are many many complaints about this vehicle with the same problem. if the low-beam headlights fail on somebody while they are driving, it could cause a crash and with that comes the possibility of the fatality of the driver and passengers. the bcm computer is known to cause many problems with starting the vehicle, flashing the lights both interior and exterior and these will cause safety issues with the vehicle. *tr

2003 chevy impala 87,000 miles on it- security pass lock system begins flashing periodically while i am driving and then randomly will not start. the entire dash lights up and i have power to the windows, but the key will not start the ignition. if i wait 10 minutes, it will start. i took my care to gm service and they said it car need to change some electrical parts like bcm computer, ignition key set, etc etc will cost me around $850 after my research online discovered that gm knows about the issue in their system, but does not care to fix it. in this economy, no one can afford to replace a 850 dollar error. it is disheartening. the reason we went with a chevy impala is the dependability. i cannot afford this issue and it is simply careless on gm's part. i'm a very disappointed customer and i will spread the word around to not purchase gm vehicles. *tr

I have been having recent trouble with my car not starting. i try to start it and nothing happens. i get a security light that flashes. i am using the original key. i will sometimes be able to start with within 15 minutes later, but sometimes i am stuck somewhere for hours before it will start again. it is not the battery because i just recently got a new one thinking that could be the problem. i read online that it has something to do with a faulty pass securitly lock issue with flawed gm system. i also read that paying to try the fix the problem is worthless because it will usually just reoccur so there seems to be no way to fix this without continiuing to waste my hard earned money. this is both a nuisace and has caused me many troubles being late to importatnt meetings etc. i once had to take my granny to the hospital and was not about to because my car wouldnt start. please do what you can to get this thing recalled as i think it is unfair to all these people. i love to buy american but this is ridiculous and makes me not want to but another american made car. thanks

When to start car and would not start. lights and radio would come on. had a new battery put in and the alternator checked. 2 weeks later when to pick up neice from the baby sitter, was inside for 3 minutes came back out car would not start again. after 45 minitues of trying to start it it finally started. yesterday, went out to my car to drive to a meeting and once again it would not start. about 40 minutes later i went back out to try it again and it started right up. i did research online and found several complaints. aparently this is a pass code issue. i do not feel i should have to go and get all this work done when there is no real solution. the code will not always come up so nobody knows what exactly is wrong with the car. in summary, the security system thinks that i am trying to steel my own car. this has left me stranded in the cold 3 different times. i am a 25 year old lady. that is totally unsafe and as there is no real solution to the problem that anyone can find how and i supposed to get it fixed. i have a child on the way. this is not the only year that does it either. all impalas have this issue from the years 2003-2005. how can a recall not be issued. i called chevy and they basically said to go to a dealer but that is not an acceptable answer when i read that several people have spent thousands of dollars at their dealer on the same issue and are still having issues. please help!! here are several articles on the issue: http://www.justautorepair.com/chevrolet/impala/589-security-light-not-starting-ignition-2003.html http://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/showthread.php?t=30631. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081001165133aacvyjchttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/chevy_impala.html

This car first failed to start in may of 2010. since then, it has repeatedly left us down, and we and mechanics have tried varies fixes. usually the car will start after a ten minute session of having the key turned on, then off for five seconds. most times after that, it does start. however, this is becoming untenable. after checking online, i find that i am one of thousands of people having the same problem.

As with many other owners of a 2003 impala the security sytem constantly mis functions and leaves me stranded with the car unable to be started. the search on the internet exposes the fact that this is common with many makes and models of chevy.

I have a 2003 chevy impala. my car cranks fine in the morning. after being driven after a while; i have to wait for it to cool off before it will crank. i have had to wait up to 2 hours for my car to start. i have taken the car to serval machines and they are lost regarding the issue. i called the chevy place and they gave me a list of possible problems and want me to spend 99.99 for a diagnostic test. i told them i was told that it was possible the bcm (body control modular). i have been looking out on consumer pages and there have been response about the bcm being fixed and it only resolved the problem for a short time. spending 99.99 plus a charge of 450.00 to 500.00 to get a temporay fix is way out of the question. i feel this is something that needs to be recalled and fixed asap because this is electrical and can be dangerous to the consumer. i also it should be at a cost to the company due to the fact no one can detect the problem outside the company and it seems that the repair is only a temporay fix and it to expensive for that.

I have a 2003 chevrolet impala w/ day time running lights on car from factory. while driving early 4:00 am in the morning, through the mountians with no streets lights. i put my high beans on. within a second all exterior, and interior lights when out. this is totally unsafe and hazardus. the manufacture should be responsible for this not the consumer. need to have a recall on this. this a maltilfunction problem that needs to be addressed, before someone gets seriously hurt. i pray that your just not entering these complaints into the data base, but letting the cosumer know that you care and are working on this problem. i also, notice that while looking for recall on this matter there's a lot of complaint on this multifuntion. consumer's can't fix this without a lot expenses and remove airbagas. will you do your best on recalliing or getting recalls on this problem.

My chevy impala 2003 intermittently will not start; it seems that there is some electronically activated lockout system that temporarily prevents the car from being started. (the battery, starter and other conventional part of the starting system are ok.) under certain situations, this is a safety issue since the car has been in potentially hazardous locations for a 30 second stop but then it won't start for 10 minutes due to an unknown problem with the car's passlock security / electrical / key tumbler / systems. aside from the frustration, i cannot rely on my automobile when transporting my 90+ year old parents to lunch or whatever because i may become stranded and their health issues cannot tolerate sitting in a hot car for unknown periods of time.

Security light intermittently coming on. vehicle will not start for 10 minutes after initial attempt to drive. transmission kicks terribly when attempting to accelerate. brake light, battery light, and airbag light intermittently flash when braking. alternator and battery check fine at service. all signs point to bcm and gauge cluster.

We are dealing with a problem with the ignition switch/ security system on our car at least once a week now. this issue began about six months back and is definately worsening. we are experiencing wait times of about ten minutes to clear the security system before we can start the car and have been told this will eventually end up completely failing soon. now this problem has caused the instument cluster lights to fail and we cannot judge speed at night without a flashlight. i judge this a safety issue because this is my wife's car and she often has to depend on the car at nights and alone.

I own a 2003 chevy. impala and last year the security light was flashing in ma dash,so i pulled over and turned it off when i tried to restart it wouldn't turn on. this incident turned to a major problem, it has made me late to appointments, left my kids and i stranded and it has not gone away. this is very inconvenient and should be taken care of, i don not want to invest more money then what the vehicle is actually worth

2003 chevorlet impala will not start due to problem with passlock sensor. this is a problem that continues to happen over and over. the manufacturer seems to be aware of this and refuses to issue a recall. there seems to a liability issue if someone is stranded because of this item and gets killed or raped.

Bought a 2003 impala in 2004 and it ran ok for a while. the car now fails to start intermittingly and i have to wait 10 minutes or more for the car to start. the dealer states that is a security alarm problem, but they have not been able to fix it. i do not believe they know how to fix this problem. i have learned that there are thousands of gm cars with this problem.

My 2003 chevrolet impala ls has had this problem for years and everyone else with the impala have the same problem. why is there no recall? the dealerships have been charging people $600 to change the ignitian that doesn't even fix the problem. that is what they charged me 3 years ago. the car will not start once in awhile and you have to wait 15-20 minutes for it to finally start. it started out every other month then every month then twice a month. now in 2010 it happens 2-3 times a week for me. here is one of the many forums about this problem http://64.13.204.178/chevrolet/impala/2002/electrical/passlock_problem_wont_start_and_security_light_is_on.shtml

I own a 2003 chev. impala, ls and cannot drive with the bright lights on as they only remain on 3-to-5 minutes and go out completely. this is very nerve wracking and dangerous. thus, i no longer use high beam and was told a new switch for $500.00 plus instalation was needed. this has ocurred since i purchased with warranty left, but thought it was just a once or twice ocurrence.
03/10/20101500001
I have a 2003 chevy impala that has starting problems(no start) . since 2004, there have been at least 4 bcm and pcm modules installed on this car from the gm dealers in which i have all the paperwork for. for the first year, the security light would come on then car wouldn't start for 10-15mins. then the second year car wouldn't start for 30-45mins. take to dealer and they couldn't find any problems. so the third year, after missing alot of time from work, it starting doing the same thing and i had it towed to gm. they had it a week and still found no problems. then the following week the same thing happened and towed again- this time they started throwing parts at it because they didn't have a clue( bill heard in plant city,fl). so after new parts, it ran for about 4-6 months and started doing the same thing. i again took to dealer and no problem found but they decided to put another bcm on it. then it would work for a few weeks and then the security light, traction light, abs light would come on and next time i try to start it then nothing would happen. so this is happening almost every other day now. this car has left me stranded so many times that i am sick of it and i keep putting money out for towing bills and all the gm dealer can tell me is to bring it in and they would look at it again. i have put out alot of money for bcms every year now and no warranty nor my money back for defective parts. i think gm has done a poor job at evaluating these concerns and do not care about the customer. something needs to be done about this issue and a recall needs to be on all of the vehicles with the passlock ii system. *tr

2003 chevy impala 4 door. whenever we drive the car at night with the headlights on high beams the go off completely. so when we are driving the speed limit like 65 it becomes very interesting. this happens about one minute after high beams are turned on. this has been happening since we purchase in february 2009. we want a vehicle recall, as there are many complaints on the webb. does anybody have to die before action is taken by the gov or general motors on this problem with the impala. *tr

The pass lock security light would come on while driving then it would not allow me to restart the car. this happen at first 2 to 3 times a month at first then the last three of four months it takes place about 3 to for times a day. first the security pass lock would come on then the car dash boards ant every thing else would work but i just could not crack the car. then the pass lock security would make everything the car turn off the car would not make a sound. then it started running my battery down. then it would run down the battery every other day. this is a danger because it has left me stranded late a night and also during the day. i have missed work due to this defect. i hope chevy will do a recall. i see that i am not the only consumer with this problem. even thou no death or accident took place due to this defect this is still a serious matter due to the fact that this problem has cost me wages and rest. i a life threatening emergency this car could cost a life all because i might not be able to get it to start. *tr

 (1) nothing appears to lead up to the failure. at least there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. (2) the failure is the car will not start at times. we bought the car used with approx. 26m miles on it. it did not do this for the first couple of years we had it, then it started it. at first we thought it was the battery since the car was about 3 years old at that time. that didn't stop it from doing it. someone where we go to have the oil changed said he knew what to do when it does it which was disconnecting a battery cable. that seemed to work for awhile and then that stopped working. at first when it did it, it would only be approx. 15 minutes before it would start. now it is up to over an hour. (3) the only money we have socked into it has been for a battery. from what i can gather on the internet, this is a very common problem. *tr

My 2003 chevrolet impala has intermittent starting trouble. sometime it will start fine and other times it wont. the dealership said it most likely the bcm or passlock system. this needs to be a recall. there is ongoing problems with all chevrolet impalas for this issue. stranded with kids all the time. *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet impala with a 3.8 liter v-6. the car radio quit working and i had to pull out the fuse because it was sending strange error messages to the body control module. now the bcm is having even more problems. the car turned itself of then back on while i was driving down the road. i pulled over and shut the car off. then it would not start again. i pulled the fuse for the bcm an the car started and i made it home. what in the world did general motors do to these cars. i have been reading numerous horror stories about their cars. was there a recall to fix this problem or do i have to go to the dealer and spend a fortune to fix this garbage pretending to be a car. how can a car company get away with this poor quality control in this day and age? my security display now shows random errors like low fuel even after i filled up the tank. not sure if any major damage was done to the car but now the transmission hesitates when it shifts. *tr

I was driving my 2003 chevy impala and tried to signal a lane change and the flashers would not work for either direction. there was not any accident, but the situation was very aggravating. the car also has a history of oil seepage and it has only 70,000 miles on it. we bought the car 4 years ago at a used car dealer, and i change the oil myself every 3000 miles. the car is hard staring at times, and i had put a new battery in it 2 years ago due to the trouble starting. *tr

I have 2003 chevy impala and has been failing to start for over a year. at first wait 10 to 15 minutes and try if it didn't start wait again and continue this until it did start. then i found if you removed the bcm fuse and replaced it, the car would start. so i installed a switch to remove power from the bcm to reset it. now depending on the outside temp. it takes 1 to 20 tries to start the car. this is very inconvenient and i feel dangerous because my wife primarily drive the car. i have read several forums about this problem and no one has been able to come up this a fix for this. i believe it should be recalled by gm. *tr

The security light started flashing on and off, causing my headlights to flash while driving and causing the lights in my dashboard to flash also. it ended up stranding me in a parking lot because the so-called security feature on this car shut the ignition off and would not allow me to start my car. *tr

Noticed failure of air bags, door locks, radio, a/c, security lockout/ no start battery drained. i am ase certified and located the battery drain to the bcm (body control module). after replacing it, it was necessary to take it to the dealer to have it reprogrammed. at this time all functions (but the door locks) work. of course the dealer rep says that the problem was pre existing as all the other functions work. i will now start looking into the cause of the door lock failure. here's why i'm writing. these problems are huge safety issues not to mention the expense and extreme inconvenience and down time. as you drive, the car has no air bags, the door locks don't work and with my 4 door car i can't even lock my car to park it outside of an unlocked garage. i want this to known as the most unsafe vehicle i have ever driven. *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet impala. i have had it for a couple of years and within a few month of getting it my door lock fuse started blowing. after a couple of months of replacing the fuse every other day my security light started coming on while i was driving. during the past year when i drive the car sometimes it does good other times my headlights flicker on and off and go completely out which has almost caused me to have several accidents, my radio turns off on its own. there are a couple of fuses that blow that causes my car not to start at all, my interior lights flash on and off. my car has a mind of its own. *tr

I own a 2003 chevy impala. in 2007 i began having problems with the car doors not locking and then the horn going off when i opened the door. a fuse was blowing out so i was instructed by one of the mechanics at the dealership to buy some fuses and change them as they go out. i also had issues with the car not wanting to start. i had the car at the dealership 6 times. the last time it was brought in via tow truck because it wouldn't start at all. no computer codes ever registered. in exasperation they replaced the body control module. this seemed to fix the problem. now a year and a half later and out of both my warranty and extended warranty we're having the same problems again. i've taken it again to the dealership and they drove it for three days. can't find anything wrong with it again. i drove it and today it wouldn't lock and or start. i waited about 30 minutes and was able to get it to start again. the car doesn't even have 80,000 miles on it and i'm sick of these problems! this car is not reliable transportation for me anymore and the dealership doesn't seem to be concerned. why is there no recall on this? i think i'm going to have to go trade in my car for something more reliable since no one can seem to figure out these issues nor repair them! *tr

I have a 2003 chevy impala which i bought new in 2003 it has only 40,000 miles on it. it has been doing strange things electrically, it locks up won't start, passlock/system lights have messages like security, service vehicle soon. installed new ignition switch, battery. had it scanned and no problems detected. always had a gm vehicle, if this is how they make cars and don't acknowledge that there are problems foreign vehicles might be the answer. *tr

Sometimes when you go out to start the vehicle, it will not start. have been told that they have a problem with the anti-theft system on these vehicles, i can believe this since the security light does not flash when the problem occurs. this is very troubling since it can happen at any time, you never know if you will get the car to start. someone should make gm own up to this problem and get it fixed, as i am sure it is not just on my vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet impala. in august of 2007, while driving approximately 25 mph, the turn signals failed. immediately following this incident, while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle overheated. the contact pulled to the side of the road, lifted the hood, and noticed smoke rising from the engine. she took the vehicle to a local repair shop and the mechanic informed her that the radiator was cracked and needed to be repaired. the repairs were made, but the vehicle overheated again months later. in august of 2008, body work was performed on the vehicle and afterwards the exterior lighting began to illuminate on and off automatically. she took the vehicle back to the body shop and was informed that the failure was due to a defective combination switch. the combination switch was replaced and the mechanic stated that the repair was unsuccessful; therefore, the original part was reinstalled. after the failed attempt to repair the failure, the mechanic performed a diagnostic test and stated that the failure was due to the combination switch. the manufacturer and dealer have not been notified. the current mileage was 171,920 and failure mileage was 150,000.

My 2003 chevy impala has the passlock security system and out the blue my car will not start. this has occurred 3 times in the past 3 months. the 1st time it started right up at the dealer but they said the fuel pump was bad. the second time was on fathers day and i waited 10 minutes and it started up. took it back to the dealer but they just said without a code they can't do anything. third time i again waited 10 minutes and it started. i just know some day that trick is not going to work. why can't gm admit there is a problem and correct this problem. its all over the internet and people are spending tons of money on fixes that don't solve the problem. *tr

This is an ongoing problem with chevrolet cars with passlock security. the security banner will appear in the dash monitor. shortly after this the car will not start for 10 to 15 minutes, after being shut off. the electrical system is in perfect working order. during this time the security banner alternates with the battery icon. with the ign switch in the on position. after the 10 to 15 minutes the car will correct itself and start as if nothing happened. my true concern here is that, this is my wife's car and now she tells me she leaves it running at the gas pump. for fear of it not starting. this is where safety comes in. is it not posted on all gas pumps. to shut off engine? many of these cars are not under warranty. and the dealers from reports i've read seem to throw parts at this problem at the car owners cost. there should be a recall on this matter. before someone is injured or killed at a gas pump, with their car left running because it may not start. thank you *tr

Traction control light and abs light both can come on at intermittent times. both happen when turning into or backing out of a parking space in any sort of weather including perfectly dry cement. i have been told that this problem has lead to accidents with individuals because you don't get the full breaking power when making turns. this happens also when making slow turns around any corner. the problem is now happening almost all of the time when making turns. i have been told to replace my front hubs as well as the wiring harnesses but i have been reading up on it and have seen that none of those things have worked for anyone and the problem continues to come back after spending over $1000 dollars. *tr

Car wouldn't start at random on day, wouldn't crank, security light would flash when key was turned to on, took it to dealer and they said it was the passlock sensor and ignition switch. about a week later did the same thing, no crank and security light flashing, they reprogrammed it again and said that the bcm might be going out. didn't have a problem with it for about 3 weeks, then it did the same thing again. car sat for about a week before taking it to the dealer and they just had to jump the car and it started. after i got it back the third time the check engine light was on, the auto locks and headlights did not work. now about 3 months later, car is doing the same thing again... *tr

My wife was driving home during evening hours on a narrow 2 lane county road when without warning the headlights and interior lights totally turned off. she immediately stopped on the roadway as there was no shoulder to move onto. she tried to operate the headlights manually with no effect. the engine was not affected. she called me via cell phone and began to explain when the lights came back on. she proceeded toward our home and about 500 feet from our driveway the lights went off again. i searched the internet and found several other identical instances with no resolution as the problem appears intermittently. an internet tech said the fix is to replace the body control module (bcm). i have already had one replaced at my expense for a non-related problem on 08/04/2006. i have not yet called the dealer this time because of their denial of the previous bcm problem - that once replaced at my insistence fixed that problem. this is a very dangerous and scary situation with huge potential for harm. my wife will now not drive the car at night and much of her work (and mine) involves evening meetings. *tr

In january 2004 we purchased a pre-owned 2003 chevrolet impala from larry puckett chevrolet's program car fleet, (vin # 2g1wf52e539416756). the warranty on the vehicle was up to 36,000 miles. until the past 2 weeks we have been more than pleased with the performance of the vehicle. on june 17, 2005 my wife, her mother and our two children, (4 yrs. and 10 months old), were traveling on interstate 85 south coming to montgomery from atlanta when the vehicle shuts down and loses all power. my wife lost all power steering and power brakes, at 70 mph she had to wrestle the wheel and stand on the brakes to direct the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. at that point, the vehicle cranks up fine and she completes the trip. following the total power shutdown the vehicle was taken to larry puckett chevrolet for repair. mr. donald barber was the associate who was our service consultant. he explained to my wife following replacement of the ignition switch that he had seen this situation before. that, was of great concern with me. has this problem caused injury or death to another consumer? i am writing a letter to robert lange, executive director of vehicle safety for general motors, and i will be copying the nhtsa with the letter. thank you for any assisstance
