Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. while driving 2 mph in the rain, the speedometer stopped working. the failure had occurred since 2008 until the speedometer was replaced at a local repair facility. the contact sent the manufacturer three letters regarding the failure but the manufacturer stated that they would not repair the vehicle free of charge. the failure mileage was approximately 35,000. the current mileage was approximately 75,000. updated 06/17/10. *lj

2004 chevy impala; speedometer misreading, and gas gauge malfunction. more prevalent in colder conditions. it happens constantly but occasionally works fine. began malfunction in summer 2009. consequences- speeding tickets. nothing done yet because gm states there has been an investigation and that the impala does not fall under the parameters of the problem so they will not help. dealer wants excessive monies to do repair in comparison to independents. this is 1 of 3 chevy vehicles in my fleet and all 3 are experiencing the same problem. the other 2 are silverados. all began experiencing the problem at about 135,000 miles. all are 2004 models. have fixed 1 of the silverados in order to deal with speeding ticket. the other silverado seems to have begun functioning correctly after parking for several days in warm environment. gm & the dealer stated that the vehicle is beyond the mileage agreement and the impala does not qualify for any help. its seems very coincidental that 3 chevy vehicles of the same year make and similar mileage would all experience the same problem around the same time frame. *tr

The speedometer on my car has decided to read whatever it wants and it will stop at whatever speed. now the temperature gauge has started doing the same thing. this started happening around 65k miles. have found that this car has the same steppers in the instrument cluster that was on a recall for another vehicle. have also found many other complaints about speedometer going haywire. this is a severe safety issue due to not knowing how fast or slow you are going in a residential area or on the highway. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. the driver stated that his speedometer malfunctioned while driving 65 mph it indicated that he was driving 5 mph. the vehicle was purchased 3 months ago and the failure has occurred 3 times. he has contacted the dealer and taken the vehicle in to be repaired; however, the dealer stated that he couldn't offer any assistance since it was working when the vehicle was purchased. the failure mileage was 60,000. the vin was not available. the current mileage was 67,000.

I own a 2004 chevy impala and the instrument cluster has failed. my speedometer does not work and the temperature gauge shows that my car is running hot even though it is not. apparently this is a common issue with gm and gmc vehicles. in 2007 a class action lawsuit was filed against his company in regards to their trucks with failed instrument clusters. the plaintiffs did win and there was a recall implemented. these are websites that i found that pertain to failure in the instrument cluster in 2004 chevy impalas. http://www.allworldauto.com/comments/2004_chevrolet_impala_comments_and_complaints_c8-91-2004-409-1.html http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2004/electrical/electronic_gauge_cluster_malfunction.shtml http://www.automotix.net/autorepair/car_problems/474044-complaint/ http://www.instrumentclusters.com/. *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet impala. the day i bought the car (may 2008) the tachometer went bezerk. shortly thereafter while driving i noticed my speedometer decided to do the same thing. i cannot tell how fast i am going or how the engine is performing. this failure happens often and is a cause for concern. the dealership refused to replace the part and quoted me over $600 dollars to have the part replaced. this price is absurd and i have since been researching ways to correct the problem on my own. this seems to be a fairly standard problem with these make and model vehicles and something needs to be done to prevent serious accident/injury due to this failure. *tr

2004 chevrolet impala speedometer quit working. it started registering a higher speed than the speed i was actually driving. it showed 90 mph when i was stopped. the speedometer then began to climb as i drove a few city blocks. it finally came to a stop at the neutral letter. i called my local dealer and he said they have been seeing this problem. he said that the cluster was defective and it would cost approx. $500 to replace it. *tr

Traveling on a dangerous stretch of highway, my speedometer malfunctioned. it registered me as going 90 miles per hour. after several close calls, as conditions were icy, i judged a safe speed and pulled over at the next safest spot on the road. my speed gauge did not reset to 0 mph as normal, but stopped at 50 mph. now my gas gauge and temp gauge malfunction as well, leaving me no way of knowing how much fuel is in my vehicle. researching this problem, i noticed many other complaints to this issue. contacting the manufacturer, i was informed my warranty is expired and they have no obligation to fix the safety problem. *tr

Hello, i have a 2004 chevy. impala. a large number of the speedometers on these cars are defective, as is mine. the speedometer goes berserk and you have no idea what your speed is. for example. you may be taking a 35 mph curve at 50 when the speedometer says 35 or other. this is a serious safety concern. gm has had hundreds if not thousands of complaints (just one example: http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_gone_haywire.shtml) on this and chose not to own up to it. the problem is not only with my model/year, the problem is with the speedometers which have been used in many models over several years. there needs to be a recall on this before people are killed. *tr

2004 impala, 80,000 miles. cold winter day. consequences( having to purchase new speedometer ) nothing done to correct as of yet. speedometer not working properly, says going 90 mph when going 60. when vehicle shut off say 30mph. inherent flaw noted by chevrolet vehicles (common symptoms include: speedometer displays incorrectly speedometer stops working tachometer needle sticks, jumps, or pegs fuel gauge flutters entire instrument panel fails the common cause for all these issues is a faulty stepper motor. the motor was used throughout gm?s entire production line from 2003 to 2007.) i think there should be a recall on all vehicles with which people have had problems with incorrect reading speedometers as gm used faulty parts in manufacturing. *tr

Speedometer does not function correctly. speedometer registers erratic speeds, going to speeds of 80, 90, 120+ for no apparent reason. each time the automobile is turned off and turned on again, it usually will go down by about 10 mph. after several days, it will return to normal, but this pattern repeats after a day or so of registering correct mph. this started about a month ago. we have called chevrolet and been advised to have the car checked at a deal for defective equipment, but have not been able to find a dealer who will respond to our call. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. while driving approximately 45 mph, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading, regardless of the speed being traveled. whenever the vehicle was in operation the failure occurred. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction at this time. the contact had concern of the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 20,000. the current mileage was 23,000.the vin was rejected from the system which will be updated upon receipt of the complaint form.

I own a 2004 chevrolet impala. i have not been in a accident but i feel my problem could possibly cause one. the speedometer in my car started acting up recently. it is not accurate, it usually reads zero when i am driving but sometimes reads a speed that is clearly inaccurate. i did some research on it and found out it is a common problem with these cars and a very costly repair. at this point in time i cannot afford the repair so i just try to drive slow. this should be a recall. *tr

2004 chev impala speedometer says 22 mph while sitting still - going slower than what speed says i have had alot of other problems with their impala from the day i purchased it. starting problems, fuel tank baffles, front end problems, temp problems, another sensor problem. car has approx 60,000 on it. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy impala. my speedometer has went crazy!! i can be doing 30 and it says i am doing 105. also when i come to a complete stop it registers 25. this could cause anywhere from a minor speeding ticket to a major accident. this should be a recall. no more gm products for me!!! *tr

Speedometer does not keep accurate reading. gauge can read 110 mph when only going 60 mph or can read 30 mph when driving faster. needle does not always return to zero when stopped or idling. also races at times. happens during cold and hot weather. also, the temperature indicator gauge needle sticks in the middle of the gauge or goes immediately to the red zone when starting the engine from a cold start or after left parked overnight. *tr

Just driving down the road no specific road just normal driving and all of a sudden the speedometer either goes up or down does not have correct speed sometimes it will go back to normal after about an hour and sometimes after thirty minutes or after you shut the car off and restart. it happens about twice a week i have not replaced any parts as of yet trying to figure out what the problem is for sure. i am reading online that many people are having this problem and it is the gauges need to be replace and that there is a recall on chevy trucks but mine is a 2004 impala and as of yet there is not one and there are many people very angry online regarding this matter and want a recall as soon as possible because the cost is about 600 - 800 dollars depending on where you go so they are using gps systems for there speed instead of getting it repaired since the cost is so high. *tr

My speedometer is out of whack, also the tach doesn't read correctly. you never know how fast you are going. this could lead to a serious accident. going around corners or driving in a school zone. somedays it works for a little while and some days not.. it reads 90 miles an hour while your going slow. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. while driving approximately 30 mph on normal road conditions, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading regardless of the speed being traveled. the failure occurred intermittently in cold temperatures. the failure was related to the stepper motor. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure mileage was 30,423. updated 01/29/10 *bf updated 01/29/10.*jb

Speedometer malfunctioning. there were no known specific activities that led to the occurrence of this issue. about two months ago, during a road trip, i noticed that i was driving slower than normal traffic but my speedometer stated i was doing the speed limit 65 mph. when i looked at my gps, it stated i was doing about 47 mph. when i sped up to 65 mph according to my gps, i was in the flow of traffic. after i stopped, it reset itself back to zero when the car was idle. about a week ago, it won't reset anymore. when the car is off, the needle points straight up. when the car is idle, the needle goes to about 80 mph. when i'm driving, it goes past 120 mph. so i'm constantly using my gps in order to maintain the proper speed. i've begun to research on the internet any information on this issue. there are many complaint websites where various impala owners (2004-2006) that are encountering the same issue. i'm not willing to replace this part; i have over 126,000 miles on my car. but there were other owners who did not have nearly as many miles as i have with the same issues. *tr

Instrument panel malfunction has been a problem with my 2004 chevy impala for 3 yrs now. like everyone else, can't afford to get it fixed. in winter, the speedometer rarely works at all and the temperature gauge just goes wherever it wants. however, i have not had any problems with the gas gauge, but not saying that i won't. i really do believe that a recall should be made for this problem. *tr
10/01/2007500001
The speedometer instrument cluster is not working properly. my speedometer does not work most of the time in cold weather, and always moves erratically, providing inaccurate measurements of speed. my tachometer does not work at all after several months of erratic movements and inaccurate readings. *tr

Speed-o-meter needle pegs out and wanders inadvertently. just happened one day. it is a continual occurrence. some days it seems to work kind of, and at other times it moves very abruptly on the dial and never smooth like it should. it has been the cause of being pulled over on 3 occasions in the last month due to lack of knowledge of my vehicles' speed. there is no way to determine the vehicles' speed without it (and without a gps device or something similar). *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy impala went crazy, stopped working. through much research, there are hundreds, maybe thousands of this car with this problem. gm says there is no recall as of now and the problem is $400 to $600 to fix. i have been told it is the gauge cluster. it is a 4yr old car with 68k miles on it, i feel that gm should take responsibility for this problem. there is a recall for the chevy trucks and tahoe's for that year, but not the impala's... they use the same part number in the gauge cluster, so why shouldn't the impala have a recall on them? this is a costly repair and a very dangerous part to have go out. i've read that people cannot afford to repair their cars, so they are driving them with no speedometer. i am doing this also, having to save up to have it repaired. so now we are guessing our speed, hoping not to get speeding tickets. please help us get gm to help out. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet impala is having major issues with the whole interior gauge panel. i have read thousands of the same complaints about impala models 2003-2006, and other chevy models. the gas gauge has went completely out and the mph gauge randomly goes haywire reading the incorrect speed, or no speed at all. the most common response is that gm has a defective stepper motor in the instrument cluster. this problem ranges in model and mileage and costs up to $600 to fix. this is a dangerous safety issue, not to mention a huge pain. gm really needs to step it up and recall this obviously defective piece. i have yet to repair it as i feel its not my fault and they need to fix this defective safety issue. i know i'm not alone in this complaint. *tr

Speedometer on 2004 chevy impala with 41k miles is defective. started sporadically, now it is all the time. speedometer may say i'm moving at 50 mph when at a stop or over 100mph on a city street. i have not had the defect fixed yet. *tr

Vehicle speedometer suddenly quits functioning. speedometer suddenly shows high speed (example 120 mph) when driving highway speeds (verified at 70 with gps). speedometer remains stuck in this position. i was able to clear the error after returning home and cycling the ignition from off to on several times. this occurred on july 2009 also under the same circumstances. *tr

I just bought an impala 2004 this january. i an on a fixed income and cannot afford to make many expensive repairs. when we had a cold snap, my car was making a whirring noise and i discovered that my speedometer was on zero. when the car warmed up, the speedometer started to work again this happened on the remaining cold days and then stopped. 6 months later, the speedometer is either on zero or just not working properly. luckily, i don't travel very far, but this is very unsafe. i have read on the internet that chevy recalled the speedometer for the tahoe, but not the impala. i again am on a fixed income and cannot readily get this fixed, but unfortunately will have to shell out $500 for a part that chevy put in knowing it's defective. *tr

Gauge cluster on 2004 impala fails. speedometer goes out and driver doesn't know how fast they are going. have heard many similar complaints with other gas gauge going, tach, etc... mine was just the speedometer - would sit at 120mph when only going 30. continued to do so until had the entire gauge cluster replaced at a local mechanic shop. have read many reports online about other impala owners having same problem. if it is that widespread and so known about for how many years, why hasn't there been a recall for the impalas like they did for the chevy/gm suvs and trucks? *tr

Speedometer just quit working the way it should with out warning... giving from no speed mph to going exceedingly much faster then what you are going.. ie~ at a stand still registering at over 75mph... to driving approximately 50mph and registering at below 0 mph.. this has been what has been going on in the 1 day since the problem has started; on august 20 2009. *tr

Speedometer and gas gauge are not working. they suddenly stopped being correct. sometimes they show i am going 100 while in park, or 75 while going 30. the gauges freeze and stay that way for several days. i have read online that many others are experiencing the very same thing. *tr

No single event. 2004 chevrolet impala speedometer not working properly. after some research, found out several people are having the same issue. just last week, i was pulled over for speeding, the cop let me off with a warning but said next time, that excuse won't cut it. the problem won't fix itself, and the dealership quoted around $450.00 to repair the speedometer cluster. i can't afford such a costly repair when i need to buy new tires. one safety priority at a time i guess. *tr

My 2004 impala's speedometer will go up over 100+ when i am only doing 60mph max. the temp gauge located to the right of the speedo is now doing the same thing. the only short term fix is to the ignition switch off then on again until the gauge reads zero again. on e time on my way home (pa.) from )nj.) the gauge dropped past the max on the speedo and i had no clue on how fast i was going. for over 5 hours i had to go with the flow of traffic and hope that they were not speeding. *tr

2004 chevrolet impala. speedometer and gauges do not work. started working off and on then total failure. i see online this is a very common problem with chevrolet impalas and is very dangerous. also leaves a good chance of something happening to the motor and we would not know there was a problem. many people with this problem are calling for a recall. *tr

The instrument cluster has went out on my 04 impala ls. first the speed odometer quit working, then the rpms quit and now the temperature gauge works about half the time.what's next the gas gauge? this is a major safety concern not having a properly working speed odometer. i have two small kids. this is the second complaint entered. there are several others with this same problem!! something needs to be done asap before someone gets killed!! no one seems to care about this matter. i can't afford to have this fixed. a recall needs to be issued. since this is a factory malfunction!!!! do something please!! *tr

First time car was taken out today, the speedometer read 75mph while stopped at a stop light. scary for me particularly because it was the first time my daughter took the car out on her own (1pm). she only went to the grocery store maybe 5 miles from the house. when she returned, i took out the car. everytime i slowed or stopped & started, the beginning speed would increase. for example, i'd be stopped and it would register that i was at 80+mph. at one point on the highway, the speedometer needle pointed at the n. later this evening (8pm) we took the car out again. it showed 60 mph when we first entered the car. then it decreased, showing 40mph while stopped. quite dangerous situation. this needs to be taken care of via gm; a recall. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy impala went haywire while i was on a highway. it started to shoot way up, telling me i was traveling 100 mph, then would drop down and it appeared i was going very slow. this went on for a couple days and then froze about 23 mph. this could create an unsafe condition because you never know how fast you are really traveling. my son's 2004 chevy pick up had the same problem, almost identical mileage and gm fixed it no charge. when i inquired about that, they said, it's a different problem. my cost to repair was $545; the whole instrument cluster had to be replaced. looking on carcomplaints.com, there are 106 complaints (last time i checked) for the same issue, yet gm refuses to acknowledge there's a problem with the 2004 chevy impala. *tr

2004 impala speedometer not functioning. with varying speed limits throughout the city i feel that this is a safety problem and prevents a driver from being in compliance with the law. wife drives a lot on her job and would not like for her to be driving too fast for road conditions. one cannot rely on other drivers to dictate ones speed. seems to be an ongoing problem with this make and model. information tells me that the '04 trucks with this problem were fixed by gm company and the cars are having the same problem but are not being repaired by gm. the ratio of complaints to this problem compared to the other problems with this make and model tell me that gm should address the problem before there are serious consequences involving the inability of a driver of a 2004 impala to determine their speed and possibly resulting in a serious accident. *tr

Driving down the road and noticed my speedometer quit working. will reset itself after car has been turned off and sat for at least 30 minutes. this was happening occasionally, but now it is a daily thing; almost every time i get in the car. sometimes the speedometer will quit after being in stop and go traffic or after hitting a hard bump and then the speedometer will get stuck on one figure. sometimes it is stuck on zero or 25 mph. i have taken it to be repaired but it won't act up for the service guy. it is a hazard when driving because not knowing what speed i am going can cause an accident. when researching for a recall, i have seen hundreds of people with the same problem. *tr

Regular use of vehicle, speedometer gets stuck in place and doesn't read speed and temperature gauge is stuck as well in the same cluster. dealer informed me that there no recall on part even though i have spoke with others with the same vehicle having the same problem. my car is a 2004 impala under 70,000 miles. i use my gps to track my speed, because i feel it's not right for me to pay up to $460.00 for a part that i did not break or damage because of normal use. *tr

My speedometer would somedays go to 60-120 upon starting the car somedays operated fine. called gmc dealer where i purchased car took it in and he said it definitely was the speedometer cluster said definitely not a short but would not put that in writing until they replace the cluster with a redesigned one and that would be 450.00est. the service manager assured me it was safe to drive i just would not know how fast i was going very funny. he also admitted to me that some of the truck&suv's were on recall but not my 2004 impala yet. since then i have been reading many other complaints re: this cluster problem since 2003 why should i pay for a part that should be a recall on all gmc cars and trucks. it appears there is also a legal suit pending regarding this part. *tr

On december 23rd while doing normal driving around town my speedometer stuck at 50mph. i was moments earlier going the speed limit of 35. at a complete stop it raised to 60 and remained stuck there. through research online i have found that this is a common problem with 396000+ posts and complaints registered across the country. i found many possible temporary fixes and one did work until today. while again normal driving my speedometer dropped from 35mph to 0 and is now stuck there. this is a major safety hazard for drivers, myself and those around such vehicles. a recall should be demanded. my car is only 5 years old with no other problems up to this point. it has 70,000+ miles and has had regular servicing and no other gauge problem so far. *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet impala v6. about 3 months ago the speedometer started acting up. it would read 30 when i was stopped, or 15 when i was doing about 60. speed readings are completely random while driving now. it very seldomly works correctly and ticks when it tries to reset. temperature gauge started acting the same way and is permanently stuck well past the overheating mark. recently, my airbag light has also permanently turned on and remains lit every time i drive. i have included a link to a discussion board with complaints from multiple people who have the exact same problem for the same year/model. please look into this as it sounds as though chevrolet is avoiding recalls for dangerous incidents in the wake of the current state of our economy! thank you for your time and help with this matter. http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_gone_haywire.shtml. *tr

Cluster is out on my 2004 chevy impala. this controls the speed odometer, temperature gauge, gas gauge, rpms.first the speed odometer went out then the temperature gauge messing up now the rpms. i have not had this car very long. only has 66,000 miles. there has not been any crashes or injuries yet. but i do have two small children. and i'm very concerned about this safety matter. the part is very expensive and i can't afford it. no recalls have been made to my knowledge. *tr

My speedometer and fuel gauge has quite working as well as my climate control motor. i bought this car used without a warranty. when things started going wrong a couple months after i bought it i started looking for info only to find lots of complaints about the issues i am having. i think this problem needs to be addressed and a recall issued before someone gets hurt or killed due to not knowing how fast you are going or running out of gas in a cold out of the way place unable to get help. i have managed not to have an accident or run out of gas but others may not be so fortunate. *tr

Speedometer failed by very slowly dropping to zero mph while traveling on i65. i did not realize the speedometer had failed until i realized i was passing other people and the car was getting quite difficult to handle. after slowing down and following a group of trucks i watched the speedometer slowly fall to zero over a period of 15 minutes or so. i have never had a speedometer do this, they either worked or did not work. fortunately no one was hurt though only because i realized i was driving at a significantly higher speed than the surrounding traffic which was already averaging 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit of 70 mph. *tr

When driving at normal speed on interstate highway, speedometer keeps increasing without increasing speed, until needle goes all the way to bottom of dial, which would be about 150 mph. if vehicle is not driven for a day or so, it will return to normal, but goes crazy again, and impossible to know correct speed. dealer had replaced many speedometers on pickups and suvs, but will not cover this under warranty or recall. this has happened to many owners, see blogs!! *tr

The instrument cluster on my 2004 chevy impala ls has stopped working. also, the fuel & oil gauges do not work. the gauges stopped working about 2 years ago after working without problems. from my online searches, i've seen many other impala owners with the same problem. i have not had the cluster replaced, but instead use a handheld gps for speed. i do feel chevy/gm knowingly manufactured a bad component and should be held liable for repairs of the step motors that have failed in these cars. *tr

Speedometer consistently reads incorrectly and/or freezes in place. occurs daily, rarely gives correct reading. dealer wants $69.95 to evaluate and repair will be $400-$500 if it is what they think it is. car has not been in any accidents. coolant temperature gauge has periodically malfunctioned as well: shows high temps when engine is not overheating. coolant levels are normal. *tr

The speedometer on the instrument cluster goes haywire. it sticks when driving highway speeds, and then remains showing a high speed when slowing down. when you then speed back up, it shows speeds upwards of 100 mph even when driving slower than existing traffic. it will only get back to 0 if i turn the ignition off and on many times. it is exceptionally dangerous to travel without knowing the correct speed that you are traveling. *tr

I am having problems with my 2004 chevrolet impala ls, and the speedometer that is in it. it has on numerous occasions gotten stuck at various speeds and will only go back down by starting and turning the car off numerous times. this is very hard on the starter and is horrible for gas mileage. this problem is also a very serious problem in that you don't know how fast you are going at any point and time, and i can not trust when it is working or not. it could also have significant legal ramifications if i get pulled over. that is something that i can not afford both financially and career-wise. i am a paramedic and my driving record can not afford to be affected or it will affect my job. i have done numerous web searches regarding this problem and have found that thousands of people have been having the same types of problems with their 2004 impalas as well as other 2004 chevy vehicles. i have also contacted chevrolet about the problem, and they have acknowledged that there is a problem with these particular instrument clusters, they are not willing to fix the problems with them, nor are they willing to help consumers with getting their vehicles fixed. i would please like to have a confirmation that this complaint has been read by somebody and that something is being done to correct this issue with chevrolet. thank you, timothy lorenz *tr

 2. speedometer will stop working without any warning. car will be in motion and the registered speed will drop to 0. july 27th, we were traveling at 45 mph and the speed dropped to 0 while we were still traveling at that speed. we turned the car off and then back on again when we had a chance to park and it began to work again. later that day, we were traveling 40 mph (as noted on a gps that we were using during this trip) and the speedometer was registering 20 mph. the speedometer also dropped to 0 while driving later that week again. 3. the vehicle is still covered under an extended warranty so it was taken to the dealership. they did not find anything wrong with the vehicle and stated a gm rep informed them that they could not replace the cluster under warranty . *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the speedometer displays inaccurate readings. on occasion, the speedometer displays 50 mph when the contact is actually driving 30 mph. the speed sensor was checked and the contact was informed that the defect was in the actual speedometer cluster. she was traveling at what the speedometer read as 30 mph around a curb, but she was actually traveling much faster and almost struck the curb. the dealer would not repair the vehicle for free because it is not under a recall. the failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

Speedometer doesn't always reset to zero. sometimes it will work correctly. sometimes it will stay at 10 or 20 mph at a stop. when you accelerate, ir shows that you are going faster than you really are. sometimes it will stay at 50 mph at a stop. then, when you accelerate it will go all the way past the limit and be at 6 o'clock position and stay there. sometimes i will use my gps unit to tell me my speed, but i know its not perfectly accurate. i have to shut the car off, and repeatedly turn the key on and off to get it back to zero. research on the internet has proven that a lot of people have been having the same problems. this is very dangerous. *tr

We have a chevy impala and the speedometer doesn't work properly. sometimes it stays at 0 and other times it says some ridiculous speed. we have researched and several people also have this problem. owners of these cars should not have to pay for the fix because they did nothing wrong and its a crucial part of the car. gm screwed up and should recall because it is dangerous when people drive without the speedometer because they don't have the money or don't want to waste it. *tr

2004 impala ls speedometer failure at 51,000 miles. it stuck at 50 mph and then increased to over 120 at about 30 mph. this seems to be an inherent widespread problem for this and other year model impala's as well as other chevrolet's as per the web site ( http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_gone_haywire.shtml ). this is a dangerous situation and chevrolet will apparently not put a recall on it. someone suggested to let this site know about this and apparently has already done so themselves, so i hope my statement is of some help for all these people's problems, including mine. please put the pressure on gm to correct their mistake. i wouldn't have a clue about how many failures or number of injuries, deaths or possible speeding tickets for all the people involved in this. thanks *tr

Speedometer failed after approx. 60,000 miles on my 2004 chevrolet impala ls. it is inaccurate and inconsistent, often reading 30-60 mph when i am stopped at a light and often reading over 90 mph when driving below 40 mph. at times, the needle jumps erratically and gets stuck outside the normal range, such as pointing to a gear indicator on the display rather than to a speed on the dial. *tr

On multiple occasions, the speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet impala ls has gotten stuck. i would say that this has happened close to a dozen times now since i bought this car in november of 2007. i have read numerous statements from online forums about people having the same problems, and i have talked to three different dealerships that have reported this as being a common problem. i am wondering why this has not been a cause for a recall, as a speedometer seems like a pretty important piece of vehicle equipment. its especially frustrating since it will cost me $400 to have it repaired. i was also told by the dealerships that once the speedometer goes, eventually the rest of the cluster will start to fail. i am stating in the incident date portion the last date that this has happened to me. *tr

2004 impala police package. instrument panel failure. after 15-20 minutes driving, the speedometer drop back to about 15 at highway speed. with several stop it stay below 0 and never move again. gm should replace all defected instrument panel for impala like they do to other models as soon as possible. *tr

2004 chevrolet impala's transmission starts slipping. it moves very slowly in the mornings. it moves very slowly from 1st to 2nd gear. it will not pull hills at a slow speed but on the interstate at 50-55mph it will only slow down just a little. it basically will not go over 65 miles per hour. i have to stay in the slow lane. plus, the digital instrument panel does not work so i can only assume i am going 50-55 miles per hour by judging the speed pattern of the other motorists. this means no temperature gauge, no speedometer, and no fuel gauge. i check fluid levels every week. i fill up my tank every saturday and wednesday. i am stuck and sick of this because i can not afford to get two things fixed that should only stop working on old cars. this car is 4 years old. *tr

Our speedometer quit working properly approx 4/1/07. contacted gm to see if there was a recall, there was not. speedometer is just stuck and points to the gear indicator in the dash. upon research, many gm '04 have this defect. my husband manages a retail food company and his fleet is supplied with gmc topkicks. the '04 trucks had the same problem. the company had to soak the cost of replacing all the clusters due to no recall. i think a defect which affects the safety of a dot certified driver should be recalled. *tr

Opy of text sent to gm/chevrolet... my speedometer and other instrument cluster gauges operate erratically. speedometer specifically is totally erratic, almost never correct and varies anywhere from fully pegged at zero to fully pegged at top end. you never know what speed you are traveling at any time. you cannot gauge, by speedometer, the speed limit or recommended speeds for curves, etc. this is a very unsafe condition. from extensive reading so far, it is obvious that this is a defective part on this vehicle and due to the safety and legal nature of your speed, this gauge should be replaced via industry-wide recall. i welcome your return call to discuss this dangerous situation. i am a pilot and cannot have my cell on continuously. please leave a message with call back number and i will be happy to discuss. this gauge has been faulty for the past year. i have installed my gps to monitor my speed. the gauge is not symmetric in its errors. you will read 100+ sometimes going 70 or you will read 0 going same speed. it changes from trip to trip and sometimes after a stop at an intersection, or just driving constant speed. *tr

I seriously thought i was the only one having these problems. i bought a 2004 chevrolet impala in aug 07. the problems started only a month after i bought the car. first the temp gauge would register all the way up to 260. after checking to make sure the car was not running hot, i started calling dealers to try to figure out what the problem was. i was informed by a several dealerships they have seen several problems with the instrument panel and they continued telling how much it would cost to replace it. well only a couple weeks later the speedometer started the same thing. it would stick and not register right. the problem is still continuing cause i can't afford to fix it. i continued my regular maintenance on the car and during and oil change i was informed the transmission fluid needed to changed, so i made the appointment to have it changed on saturday. only a couple of hours after having it changed we went to back up and the transmission slipped. this had never happened before so we thought it just might be low on fluid. after checking the fluid level was fine but the problems continued. now it slips when i put it in drive to take off and you can hear the transmission whining while being driven. as of now it still slips, sometimes, ands whines, and of course the instrument panel is still messed up because i cannot afford to have it fixed. i have spoken to several people that own impalas and i have come to find out they are having the same problems i am having. you would think by now that gm would realize there is a problem and they are not just isolated incidents. *tr

Several occasions now the speedometer has gone haywire and is showing that i am traveling excessively faster than i am going - approximately 30 - 40+ mph. i thought that i was speeding and so i lightly put on my brakes to slow down during rush hour traffic and had tires squealing all around me - the speed of traffic is 70+ mph in that section of freeway. it was fortunate that it did not cause a several car pileup. *tr

I was driving and noticed that my speedometer was sitting on zero. months later i noticed that my gas gauge started going haywire. one minute it was full the next it was 1/2 full and i had only gone 20 miles down the road. then my dad used my car one day and told me that the oil pressure gauge was wrong as well. i have not had the money to fix this problem and the only way i know i need gas is when the low fuel message comes up in the message center. i have received about 4 speeding tickets just in the last year and would have received more if i had not known the officer or told them the problem and begged that they let me off with a warning. *tr

 1. i was driving my vehicle when i noticed the speedometer began to reflect readings in excess of the actual speed i was driving, e.g., registering beyond 120 mph (the needle would pass that mark and continue moving) when the car's actual speed was probably less than 50 mph. upon stopping the vehicle, the speedometer would register mph in excess of zero (e.g., 80 mph). the needle would not return to zero even with the engine off. 2. the failure of the speedometer caused me to not know the actual speed i was driving, which placed me in jeopardy of driving significantly faster than the posted speed for a given stretch of road. i had to take the vehicle to a local dealer for repair. 3. according to the dealer invoice, the dealers service department removed, replaced and setup (the) ip cluster assembly. the replaced part was not made available to me. 4. general motors is experiencing this same type of speedometer cluster failure on various other gm models beginning with model years 2003 and later. gm has special policy coverage for certain of its models with this problem, but not for all models. my vehicle is a 2004 chevrolet impala which had 57,355 miles on it when the problem occurred. i was advised by gm that, ...the special coverage...do es not include your vehicle... and that i would have to bear any expense i incurred for the service performed by the dealer. *tr

Failure of the instrument cluster -- most importantly the speedometer became grossly inaccurate or completely inoperative during the course of normal driving. in some instances the speedometer read 0mph at highway speeds and other times it would read 120+mph while the vehicle was stopped. chevrolet dealership found an internal gauge cluster problem and replaced the cluster. *tr

We purchased our 2004 impala new in may of 2004. there are currently 56,000 miles on it. the speedometer acts crazily and we also have the noise and vibration the steering column. the dealership says the steering shaft will cost at least $100 and a new instrument cluster $300. that doesn't include the cost of labor and state sales tax! these defects need to be addressed . i am almost fearful to let my wife drive this car. after reading all these complaints, i can't believe the government is failing the american consumer trying to buy american products. no wonder the foreign car companies are eating detroit's lunch! *tr

I purchased a new 2004 chevy impala in april of 2004. in november 2007, one morning i noticed that i was driving through a parking lot at approximately 70 miles per hour, thinking it sure doesn't feel that fast. after applying the brake i observed the speedometer drop only to about 50 mph. later that day i found that the only way to get the speedometer back to zero was to turn off the car and restart it several times as the needle would drop about 10 mph each time. once at zero the speedometer appeared to read correctly. over the next few days the problem continued though it was remarkably worse the colder the car was. by now, january 08 the speedometer has stopped reading accurately altogether and has parked itself at the 360 degree mark. this problem has been addressed in chevy and cadillac trucks but gm has been slow to issue any special policies or recalls regarding the cars. the parts (specifically faulty stepper motors manufactured by delphi) by all accounts i have been able to research however are the same regardless of model. this is a safety issue primarily as well as a legal liability. besides this, the issue is certainly a customer relations nightmare. i alone have viewed several hundred complaints regarding the same issue. chevrolet must address this problem immediately with a full replacement of parts and complete warranty. *tr

Speedometer is burning the needle at the 3rd gear mark while driving. while stopped at a red light yesterday (12/08/07), the speedometer was reading 112 mph, sitting still!! i cannot get the speedometer needle to set at 0 anymore. i am in the process of teaching my 15 1/2 year old son to drive and this is a huge issue. i am constantly making him pull over and switching seats with me as he cannot get a speeding ticket on his permit. it is impossible to guess at your speed, even with the other traffic flow and we should not have to do this. i have had the car checked and the result is the instrument cluster is bad, with an estimate to fix it that is unreasonably high. additionally, gm knows this is an issue, so they should recall and fix these since they ordered an assembly change on them. *tr

While applying the brakes for the first time after start up at low speeds (less than 20mph) the antilock brakes kick in when not needed. for about 2-3 seconds, there is extremely reduced braking ability. after this initial time period, the whole antilock braking system shuts down and also turns off the traction control system. once the shutdown has taken place, the car's braking system functions as if there was no antilock brakes on the vehicle. took car to dealership which indicated that the wheel sensor was bad and could be replaced for $600.00. also while driving on the interstate, noticed that the speedometer was stuck at 65mph, regardless of speed. when turned off, the vehicle still read 65mph. was unable to determine proper speed. noticed that the vehicle reset the speed 5mph lower each time the ignition switch was moved from off to on. multiple cycles of turning the ignition switch on and off finally reset the speedometer to 0mph. don't know if this is only a temporary fix for a problem that will probably get worse. although not a serious issue, the tachometer does the same thing. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet impala is currently having issues with the speedometer. the speedometer is showing every speed other than the actual speed being driven. it sometimes shows speeds slower but more often showing speeds in excess of 120 mph. this is an obvious issue of safety. it is a well known fact that speed kills, and if you don't know how fast you are going, you a taking a chance that could prove fatal. the vehicle is currently at the local chevrolet dealership. they advise it is the speedometer cluster. this was an issue that gm corrected with their 2004 chevrolet trucks, yet refuse to acknowledge exists in the 2004 impala's. a quick search of chevrolet speedometer malfunctions brings up independent websites with 2004 impalas topping the list of others with this same safety issue. this appears to be a problem found in this vehicle with mileage ranging from 20,000 miles to 100,000 miles. i will request that the dealership give me the malfunctioning part. *tr

Chevy 2004 impala: speed and temp gauge were reading erratically and at times stayed at a particular speed and temp which were not accurate. gauge cluster was changed out according to a dealership. who knows what they really did. had vehicle in to same dealership again for intermediate steering column shaft for a knocking sound. dealership lubricated shaft. to me, if something is making noise, this means there is contact with at least two components causing wear. i believe the shaft should have been changed out. all problems have not returned, yet. no accidents or injuries or speeding tickets either, thank god. i can guarantee you the dealership or the manufacturer of this vehicle would not pick up the cost of a speeding ticket or associated costs due to an injury or death. what i would like to know is when is someone going to step up and put some real heat on the auto industry. does it take a death of a fellow citizen to take action? i think it's too late if that's what it takes. i don't recall the dates of either incident so the date i enter is not accurate. i could give you the phone number of the dealership to find out the actual dates, but your not looking to make waves with the industry. please tell me i'm not wasting my time with this complaint. please tell me there is a genuine concern at nhtsa. please do not insult my intelligence. yes i'm angry and dissatisfied with the auto industry whose aim is to live off of components breaking down so you have to bring your vehicle back in. it sure would be nice to purchase a vehicle, drive off the dealership lot and never having to return. *tr

My speedometer goes haywire whenever it wants. my speedometer will say i'm going 60 mph but i'm not really going that fast. sometimes it goes the other way. it will say i'm doing 30 mph and i'm actually doing about 60 mph. right now parked in the parking lot it says the car is going over 120 mph. i have checked for recalls and the a none for this defect. i call it a defect because i have found numerous people with the same issue, and their cars have about the same mileage as mine. this is a huge safety issue not to mention an issue with the law, because i have no idea when it's going to happen. i would get it fixed but i just had a baby (so not safe to have her along with me) and i don't have an extra $500 laying around. normally when something goes wrong with my vehicle it is not an issue, i get it fixed because its normal wear and tear. i do not feel that a speedometer is something that should have these kinds of issues at 69,000 miles. it should hold up to what the company says the expected life of the car is. this defect has 2 tsb#'s but i don't know how to go about getting them used to fix the car. tsb#'s 01726 & 050604058 are the numbers but nothing tells me what i should do with those numbers or who i should talk to about using the numbers to get the car fixed. *jb

Wow same problem as everyone else. speed does not register properly seems to be whenever it wants it will show speeds higher then what they are. this is a danger because speeds are guessed in school zones and highways. after a couple days speed will begin to work ok. now the blower motor and heater do not work unless you pound by the ashtray area and hopefully the air conditioning will start blowing but the heat will not come on when switched to heat. this is a safety issue living in montana when it gets below 32 and colder it would be nice this winter to thaw out the windows so i can see when driving at unknown speeds. sometimes when the air is blowing you can smell something burning. we are in drought conditions in montana and if my car were to catch on fire on side of road and continue up the mountains this could be a disaster be creating a wildfire. i am unhappy with my car which has started problems around the 30,000 mile mark. another problem is the high beam switch is needing to be clicked twice before dimming down from high beam. this is a safety issue due to blinding oncoming traffic. transmission has been like slipping into gear as well. *tr

At about 70,000 miles my impala's temperature gauge started acting funny. once it stayed on cold while i drive completely across town. the next day it went all the way to hot. i got off, checked the water and oil levels. everything was fine. within a few days i noticed that my speedometer showed that i was going 50-60 mph while i was driving in a parking lot. i stopped and the gauge stuck at 40 mph. both gauges have continued to go haywire. my temperature gauge is now stuck way past the hot level and has almost made it all the way around again. my speedometer is stuck on 50 mph for the last 4 days and at times also almost goes all the way around. i attempted to chevrolet and they are basically doing nothing about this even though reading on multiple websites about other peoples issues, this is the main problem with the 2004 chevrolet impala. *tr
09/02/200738000304/18/2004
My 2004 impala ss has had several failures of the instrument panel cluster. the first was incorrect speedometer readings that lead to total failure of the speedometer (sticking and/or erratic behavior of the speedometer needle). the second was improper fuel level indication (high level shown with low fuel light coming on - almost no fuel left). the latest is incorrect oil pressure indication. all of these are known issues with the model of stepper motor used to drive these gauges in many gm vehicles. my total cost for repair has been in excess of $300, not including the current oil pressure gauge repair (stepper motors for speedo and fuel level gauge). i plan on having all stepper motors replaced with the latest generation replacement (switec x25.168). this is something that gm needs to take responsibility for and correct as it is a very widespread issue. *tr

We bought an impala chevrolet 2004 new in 2004. there were a few problems with it. instrument panel cluster -and speedometer gauge did not work and noises came from the instrument panel. steering gear popped/clanking noise heard and sensed from front end. also, seemed like something was wrong with the transmission because it did not change gears correctly, and it kind of bumped when accelerating, appeared as if engine did not want to accelerate. there was a delayed start, may be necessary to hold key in start several seconds until starting or turning back and trying again. sometimes key locked in and won't turn. took to dealer, but it did not do it for them. *ak on the steering gear the steering intermediate shaft was replaced on 11/19/05. again the noise was back and on 07/17/07 the steering intermediate shaft was lubricated. on other issues repairs are to costly. do not feel secure on vehicle these problems have been going on for the past two years.

Previously this year the spedometer would be stuck at a higher speed than the vehicle was moving, at a standstill it would show 50mph. that has resolved spontaneously, now however the fuel gauge is showing 3/4 of a tank when it was earlier at 1/4 and i have not added any fuel, it is not dropping below 3/4 of a tank despite driving the vehicle.

Tl*- the contact stated that while driving the 2004 chevrolet impala with 82000 failure mileage the speedometer displayed incorrect rates of speed. the speedodometer needle also began to swerve back and forth slightly. the vehicle was diagnosed as having a failed instrument panel cluster. *ak

The instrument cluster on the 2004 chevy impala goes out-of-control. it regristers speeds greater or less than the speed i am traveling. everything was working great and then all of a sudden it started going out-of-control. i was told that the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced.*k

Instrument failure, nothing caused the failure, it just started slowly at 30000 miles, had mild speed misreadings at night, but slowly became worse and worse. but now temperature and fuel does not read correctly any time of day, but goes crazy on hot days. i took the cluster apart and the main processor chip had a blob of silicone drip on it during assembly and now has a burn mark on it. i have talked to numerous other impala owners with some probem.

Speedometer acts like it freezes while driving. while driving recently the speedometer was stuck on 65 mph. after coming to a stop and starting again, speedometer started from this point and went to 120. i parked the car overnight and the speed was 65 mph. i turned the key on and off and it went down by 10 mph. i did this a few more times and it finally went back to 0. it registered correct after i drove it but it still acts like it is sticking or hesitating. my friend also has an impala and she stated that her speedometer on her car does not work sometimes either. *jb

Tachometer and speedometer quit working correctly. tachometer would vary anywhere from 0 to 7000+ rpm when idling, would go off the scale or fall to zero while driving. speedometer was showing 85 mph while driving approximately 40 mph. speedometer showed 52 mph and was actually going 70 mph, verified by state trooper using moving radar. *jb

Speedometer/tachometer cluster malfunction - a couple of months ago my speedometer was acting erratic, so i took it to a chevrolet dealership. the dealership wanted to charge me $90 bucks to check the speedometer, knowing that this is a common problem. i chose not to pay and i based my speed off of my tach. which was a rough estimate. well today, my tach. goes haywire, so where does that leave me? hmmmm.. i have a speedometer that has completely stopped working, now i have a tachometer that starts on 4000 rpm. and of course goes way past 7000 rpm. why should i have to pay chevrolet $90 to check my speedometer for them to tell me that it's not working, then pay an additional $300 for the cluster, which may not resolve the issue? this should definitely be a recall!! what is it going to take? loss of life? *nm

Speedometer acts erratically. some kind of communication problem between the instrument cluster and the drivetrain control module. as many complaints i've seen, this should be a recall issue. *jb

I have a bad speedometer on my 2004 chevy impala. it is erratic. sometimes it works fine, but not for long. usually it reads 30 to 60 mph over what i am going or it goes beyond the 120 max. i researched online and found this a common problem with chevy vehicles. http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/t2bgkbgi55eknu77c/p1 above is a lengthy customer complaint section on the same problem. *jb

Unable to control steering hydroplaning without just cause other than rain, also noise when turning the steering wheel, and backing it, and it drags when key is turned to start. the speed, temp, and gasoline gauge isn't working. i do not like to drive this car in the rain and if i can avoid it, i will not drive, the problems began in the past 3 weeks miles is still fairly low. *jb
