Approximately a year ago my temperature gauge and gas gauge quit working. i was not too concerned because i knew how many miles i could go on a full tank of gas so i just judged my gas by my mileage counter. now this evening my speedometer quit working. while completely stopped, with the engine turned off it said that i was going 30 mph. when i was driving, the needle seemed to jerk a lot. also recently my car seems to be sluggish or act like it is going to stall. i have also had some occasions when my car won't start after just turning the key off. if i wait a little while or overnight then it will start like nothing was wrong. i am very concerned because my 17 year old also drives this vehicle and i have to do a lot of highway driving.

On several occassions i have been stranded because my car will not start. it apparently has something to do with the security passlock system. when you insert the key nothing happens. it is as though it does not recognize your key as a valid key. the system prevents the car from starting even though all the other systems, radio, lights, electric windows and doors are still functional but it is as though it does not recognize that the car is in park or neutral and does not allow it to start. after several minutes it usually starts. i have taken it to the dealership where i purchased it and after running the diagonostic testing on it tell me they can find nothing wrong with it. they say unable to duplicate customer conccern. since the problem happens occasionally i am sure they cannot duplicate. i have found on line that there was a technical service bulletin #40847003 dated 9/1/04 on this problem and that the same diognostic service codes of b2958 and 2960 are reflected on the bulletin. i also reviewed the first 200 complaints on this site and see that 26 of those 200 were for this same matter. i am sure there are many more in the remaining 545 complaints. if chevrolet knew this was a problem in the year this car was sold 2004 shouldn't a recall have been done at that time when the car was under warranty? can a recall not be done on this continuing problem?

First at buying my chevy impala it had 115,000mi on it already but desperatly needed a car being a single mother. after having the car a little over a month the fuel injectors blew where my car would no longer start. got it fixed. next i had to keep putting power steering fluid in (once every week) went to a mechanic, he said my power steering is going to eventually go.. next 2 months after that my car caught on fire through the lighter. electrical. called the fire dept. they had to cut the wires and pull the fuze. 2 months after that, my transmission blew. just like that. i was driving on the high way and approached an accident. after coming to a complete stop tried to pick speed back up and it wouldnt go anymore than 15 mph. i pulled off to a rest area, sat there for 30mins. reversed out of the parking lot, put it in drive, it wouldnt budge... not to mention a month after buying the car. the turn signals,, brake lights, cruise control, flashers all worked when they wanted too and not when i needed it too. came close to a few people running in the back of me due to back lights not working.. and my temp, gage, speedometer and gas gage do not work. id be in park with a full tank of gas, it says im going 80mph and gas is empty.. hate this car with a passion.. very dangerous car...would never recommend this car to anyone....

Vehicles gauges do not work@! some are stuck and work periodically or not at all. false readings for speed, fuel and temperature. contacted the dealer about recalls and there are none although i have read hundreds of complaints about the same thing. this car drives highway every day and this is very dangerous. i was told that it is a problem with the instrument cluster that is well know an cost $600 to fix. this is unacceptable. *tr

Every now and then you go to start the car it won't do anything. all the lights, radio, everything comes on as normal but when you turn the key over to start it won't do nothing, click, or anything. one time we left the car over night, locked up, the next day it started like nothing was wrong. another time i let the car sit for 15 mins and it started fine. then another time, i kept trying every 10 to 15 mins for an hr but nothing. then let it sit for 25 to 30 mins then nothing but i left the key in on position for a couple minutes while all the lights ran and then it started fine. some people say its the starter, ignition or even the security. a lot of people have had this problem there's even videos of people complaining. id say that there's something that needs to be looked into so everyone w these vehicles know what's wrong. thanks

While driving in heavy traffic, it just stops running. my husband puts the car in neutral and is able to start it back up again. it has done it a few times since that occurrence. this could result in a very serious situation if the car stalls in an intersection and won't restart. the car also has a security issue that prevents us, as the owner from starting it. this has been an ongoing problem from the purchase date. if you turn on the ignition and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, it will start up. we now leave the car running when filling the car with gas because we have had to sit and wait for it to restart at the pump. this could cause a very serious problem also. if you go on line, you will see numerous complaints about both of these problems. we bought this car used and knew we would be responsible for some issues, but not this, it should be a recall issue. we have had to replace the rack and pinion (very costly) all new brakes and rotors, all new tires, and some other minor issues. i feel, as do numerous other gm owners, this is a factory defect in the security system (passlock key system), causing both problems. anyone having this problem, should be able to take the car to the dealership and they should have to fix it at no cost to the owner of the vehicle. i took it to the dealership just after we purchased it and he said he would have to replace the ignition and something else at a cost of almost $800. i am certain this can be taken care of by rerouting wiring in the security system at a very minor cost, or just resetting the computer system. any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

My wife got into a wreak because chevy has not recalled these issues. my 2004 impala abs brakes mafunctioned along with my traction control , she tried to stop at a stop sign and the brake pedal kicked up and would not let her stop she removed her foot from the brake and tried pressing the pedal back down and it kicked up kicking in the abs and traction control not allowing her to stop and she ran into a snow bank but my insurance paid for the body work but not the mechanical problems i replaced both hubs on the front, quit doing it for a week or so and then when i drive it the traction control and abs kicks in while im driving down the road. now my speedometer, tachometer and temp guage are not workin at 0 rpm my car is doing 90 mph as it sits in my garage not starting because my key will not turn to start it my steering wheel will not lock and because i cant turn my key i can not put my car in neutral to push it out of my garage so i can get it towed i have read so many issues on these and other gm models i am suprised that there was no recalls when i called had this car for 4 years and nothing but problems and money so as my car sits in my garage as it will till these items get recalled i am not putting anymore money in this car i will drive my 98 infiniti that i have had for almost 10 years because i know its dependable. never again gm will you get another cent from me i have never had this many problems with any car.

I was driving down the street and saw that that my speedometer says about going 110 miles an hour when i knew that i was only going about 25 i was in a residential area. the issue started slowly i would o.ly happened once in a while but here we are 2 years later and my actual speedometer needle faces down towards the steering wheel .no my service tag agent going on the frayed of my gas gauge is gonna stop working also the blinkers only work when i want to . .

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy impala began acting up while driving on the freeway on 11/21/2011. i was going the posted speed limit of 70 mph and when i let off the gas pedal for slower traffic, i noticed that the speedometer appeared to be stuck at 70mph. this was confirmed when shortly up the road i exited the freeway and came to a complete stop and the speedometer still read 70 mph. when i got home, i called a local auto parts store to inquire what could be causing this. i was informed that this is a common problem for the impala and that eventually my other gauges like the fuel level will also act up. i looked on line and found that there are many out there that have my same issue which i consider a safety issue but that there are no recall notices for the issue. i am just floored to find that there is no recall for an item like this. looking into the matter further, to correct the issue, it must be taken to a gm dealership to have the dashboard cluster replaced at the cost of $600. please look into all the reported issues simular to mine and see if something can be done concerning a recall. thank you in advance!

Instrument cluster failing. - while driving home from work, my instrument cluster failed. started jumping around for a min until it finally stuck. now it has progressly gotten to the point where it never has the correct mph. sometimes sticking 20 - 30 mph while in park. other times staying at 0least while on the interstate. very unsafe. should ne a recall, after calling the dealer and being quoted nearly 600.00 to repair. after this many complaints chevy needs to fix this problem. no more american cars for me thanks.
09/21/201192000
When pulling out my parking spot, the traction control/abs light comes on and stays on for the duration of my drive which is usually just around 9 miles (i drive to and from work). this has been going on for months and happens every time i pull out from a parking spot. on some occations when trying to stop the brakes make a grinding noise and it takes a bit more effort than usual to stop. what could be causing the traction/abs light to come on everytime i drive my car.
11/23/201099000
Gauges on insturtment panel not working speed gauge says you are going 120 when you are going 50 now it stays pegged all the way over i fell this is a safety issue and chevy should recall this it is a problem in a lot of there vehicle also heat gauge is not working.

The car will not start all the time. but if you turn the switch on and off 3 times it may work or may not.
06/01/2011115000
The turn signals stop working for no reason. both right and left turn signals will just not work. i found a temporary fix on a car forum on the web. if you turn the hazard light switch on and off a few times then the turn signals will work again for awhile. at first it happened only occasionally. now it is happening on a daily basis. and you don't find out until you are going to make a turn or switch lanes on the highway. i found so many complaints about this problem on the car forums to indicate to me that mine is not an isolated problem. this is the second electrical complaint i've had to make on this car. the other problem was with the speedometer and other gauges not functioning which required a very expensive fix.

I have a chevy 2004 impala in we been having problems since we got it last year one day the car started shaking in it cut off we got it fixed a couple months later it's back doing the same thing it did at i'm sick in tired of spending my money on getting all this self fix in for it to happen again i look on internet in know a lot of people with the same problem and i'm pretty sure you seen a lot of complaints so i think it's time for a recall 2000-2011 these cars are messing up big time

04 chevrolet impala. passlock security stops car from starting. 1. nothing led up to failure. car just temporarily wouldn't start. thes starts normally for a few days. then back to no starting. 2.car temporarily doesn't start. happens 2-3 times a week. takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes to get the passlock to reset. has caused me to be late to work and other appointments. 3. taken to dealership $600 to repair passlock security device

Security light flashes and has shut car down and will not start, until a system reset. it has done this 8 times in last 3 months. family has been involved every time. after extensive research, the passlock system has been a culprit for many a owner

My dash cluster is malfunctioning. it says my car is overheating. had it worked on and after found it was a known cluster problem. the speedometer is not accurate and i got pulled over for speeding. next the cruise control went out. now the gas gauge is next. checked on line and gm is aware of these issues but has done nothing. repair bill is around 500.00 dollars. seems unfair to me. will be travelling on interstate soon hope no one gets hurt due to speed/engine over heating and not knowing/running out of gas on a busy interstate. i thought i bought a dependable car...guess i was wrong

The headlights on my 2004 chevy impala just suddenly went out during night time driving. the only thing that would give me any light was to hold back on the dimmer switch lever. i have since learned that this malfunction has happened to hundreds of owners of impalas. the switch is quoted as costing over $500 and instalation another $200. that's alot for a commonly defective plastic part! it's also a very poor design to have all headlights go out simply because the dimmer switch is malfunctioning.

First my tempature gauge starting reading vehicle was over heating and i had just started the car. now the needle is pinned at the bottom even when the vehicle is off and the gauge is on the top. then the gas gauge started jumping. now it does not read accurately at all, at time is way pass full or doesn't read anything, even when i fill up the gas. finally the speedometer stopped working or gives false speeds. i have been traveling on the highway over 50-60 and the speedometer reads 10mph. the check engine light now has come on also.
10/21/201095000
Speedometer does not go to 0 when you stop. you start out at 20 or 30 miles an hour and the speedometer show an inaccurate reading. this is a safety issue. you must rely on your gps device to show your proper speed. there should be a recall on the instrument cluster as there are a lot of complaints.
06/19/2009
I have a 2004 impala. it only has 36,000 miles on it. i have kept it well maintained and is great shape with low miles. the gauge cluster on the control panel began acting crazy as many other postings i have seen on the internet. the speedometer and temperature gauge is screwed up. it reads 100 when i'm guessing 40 or 50 mph or 10 when i'm around 35 or the total opposite. i can reset it temporarily by turning the key on and off until the speedometer and the temperature gauge reaches zero. it is sometime ok for a short while. but it definitely will go whacky after i go over 50 mph or if i go over 60 mph hour on the interstate. then i have no speedometer until i try to reset it and sometimes it takes me days to get it back to only temporarily working. i noticed this happening in 2009 when i got the car from my brother after he passed away. the car at that time only had around 28,500 miles on it. but as times goes on, the issues are getting more prominent and worse. there are sometimes i have to wait a day or two to even get it back to reset. i have called the local chevy dealer laria chevy in rittman, ohio where my brother had purchased the vehicle from originally. i told the service manager told of the numerous complaints i had read on this problem. he informed me there was no recall and the cost to repair it would be around $550 to $650. i believe this is a total rip off by chevy!! this is not an isolated problem, considering the mounting number of complaints i have already read on the internet. there is definitely a safety factor involved and i can not believe there was no recall by chevy or by the nhtsa board. i am so displeased with this vehicle that that this will be my last chevy i will ever buy and i have voiced my displeaure with several of my friends. i will go back to a dependable honda car which i drove for 12 years and never had issues with it as i have had with this chevy!!

Speedometer frequently indicates the wrong speed. the speedometer needle got stuck at zero mph when outside temperate was about 20 degrees fahrenheit. ever since that time (for 3 months now) the speedometer needle will frequently stick or jitter as vehicle speed changes. when speedometer needle is stuck it fails to reset all the way to zero when car is started. it only moves counter-clockwise a little bit when starting the car; it does not move back to its reset position. the reset problem could be compounded by a programming problem with the signals sent to the stepper motor. the fuel gauge needle can be heard and seen during starting of the car to swing the full range of the fuel dial to reset itself. the speedometer only moves a little bit counter-clockwise during startup; not nearly enough to reset to zero when it gets stuck.
12/28/200935000
Problem is speedometer. driving on highway at 60 mph, as sun was setting, speedometer slowly went went 60 to zero or a low number (over 5-10 minutes) with no actual change in speed. this happened on several consectutive days. currently, for many months, speedometer is not accurate. e.g. going about 40 mph, reads 20 mph. e.g. going about 35 mph, reads 120 mph, repeat 120 mph. e.g. car at standstill, speedometer reads 120 mph. e.g. going 40 mph, reads zero. often shows correct speed then slowly goes down with no change in actual speed. very dangerous on highway at night not knowing how fast you are going. searched internet, many similar complaints. problem - possibly stepper motors. need recall.
03/04/201140000
Event: use the brakes. failure: front end shakes. repair: replace rotors. event: drive at any speed. failure: speedometer gone haywire, says your going 20 when you are going 70
11/09/2010120315
Instrument cluster failed. tachometer, speedometer and temperature gage give false readings. speedometer sticks and indicates 65 mph when vehicle is stopped. tachometer randomly indicates rpms varying from 0 to more than 8000. temperature gage indicates randomly between minimum of 140 and maximum of 260 degrees.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala. the contact stated the speedometer failed he does not know the speed he was driving. the vehicle also had water penetrate the front passenger floor. the vehicle will be taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the vin information was not available. the failure and the current mileage was 80,000. li

I have a 2004 impala. it only has 41,000 miles on it. i have kept it maintained. recently the gauges on the control panel began going crazy-flicking back and forth and the check engine lite would come on. now the speedometer is wacked out. it reads 100 when i'm guessing 40 or 50 mph or 10 when i'm around 35 or the total opposite. i called the local chevy dealer, serviceman and told them of the numerous complaints i had read on this problem. he informed me there was no recall and the cost to repair it would be around $550. i believe this is a total rip off! this is not an isolated problem, considering the mounted number of complaints i have already read. this was my 1st cheverolet, i will never buy another one!

Several times, i have had my 2004 chevrolet impala just randomly not start. after researching the problem, i have found that it's the passlock system installed in the vehicle. i'm no mechanic but know how to research and the amount of people with these same issues is overwhelming! it appears that there are some nickel pins that were used in the ignition switch that are very picky to oxidation levels to the point of being faulty - the smallest wear and tear or corrosion of these pins can start this problem. it happens with no warning as well! this may not seem like a safety issue, but put yourself in my shoes. i live in north dakota, and when something like this happens in -40 degree weather it becomes a safety issue. something needs to be done about this problem that appears to span many years and models of gm vehicles.

The gauges on my 2004 chevrolet impala ss are acting erratically. the rpm at idle sits at about 3 and when i'm in drive if ranges from 4 to 5 with very little acceleration. the speedometer has started doing the same thing when traveling at about 35 to 40 mph the speedometer registers 140 mph. when turning the car off the gauge indicators don't go back to their designated starting positions.

The speedometer ( component 1 ) has failed in the vehicle. it began by operating erratically on the date entered above and has progressed to not working at all most of the time or displaying the wrong speeds i.e. 70 mph while sitting still. the tachometer ( component 2 ) is also showing the same signs to complete failure by displaying unrealistic engine speeds while at idle. i contacted a dealer who ran the vin and found no recalls. i however have researched this matter on the internet and have found numerous complaints of the same nature that appears to point to the stepper motors used in the instrument clusters by gm to be the problem. it also appears that gm has recalled several models of the same era due to this problem but not the impala line. i fail to understand how the same problem is recalled for some but not all affected models.

While driving a consistant speed, speedometer will fluctuate from stuck at zero to 120mph. happens constantly. fuel guage fluctuates also and doesn't always work. if using cruise control while speed appears correct, the impala will automatically increase its own speed while the speedometer does not change leaving an unsafe opportunity open for very tragic accidents to happen. i cannot beleive that my 2010 pontiac vibe has had 3 recalls and this impala has not had any for the instrument panel. do people really have to die or be injured before something is done to protect us?

The light switch, part number 10283776, on my car developed an electrical short circuit and burned out the push-on electrical connector for the power supply wire to the lights in the instrument cluster. enough heat was generated to damage the plastic connector, part number 12129431. the fuse did not blow. i replaced the light switch and connector.

Electronic instrument cluster gage not working. i cant tell how fast im going or if i have gas in the car. i wouldnt even know if my car is over heating. this seems to be a common problem on 2003-2005 chevy impala's. i have seen thousands of complains on the internet and its not fair that all these people have to take up this expense. especially when its not cheap. i would understand if it was rare..but it seems like most impala's have this problem.

The speedometer, gas guage, temperature gauge have quit working in our 2004 chevy impala. the turn signals work when they want too. the heat panal controller only works on one side. on occasion the security light comes on and the car won't start. the rear defogger doesn't work. lights on the radio only work when they want too. every so often the transmission slips. i went on another sight and saw there are over 100 complaints for these same problems, we have been dealing with them for atleast 2 years, gm doesn't want to help out with any of these problems..

My impala is having several safety issues which i have noticed is a common occurrence in these vehicles. i have also noticed gm has not recalled these issues. first safety issue is in the instrument cluster panel in which there are faulty stepper motors that cause my gas gauge, temperature gauge and speedometer to not function at all. not knowing how much gas you have, how fast you are going, or what temperature your car is. these are serious safety issues to any driver. second issue, my pass lock security system is malfunctioning. the security light stays on and causes my car to not start, leaving me and my infant son stranded for up to thirty minutes until it decides to start. shame on gm for not resolving these issues in all their models. when will there be recalls for these obvious safety issues?! this is the last gm car i buy!

The speedometer of my 2004 chevy impala goes out. while driving down the road it will start climbing even though my speed has not changed. i may be going 40 mph but the speedometer reads 120 mph! the gas gauge will also read wrong and my temp gauge just plain doesn't work. this has been going on for over 2 years now. gm says it's not a recall issue. it can be corrected for awhile if we disconnect and reconnect the battery, but the fix is short lived. we have not yet had it repaired, the cost is over $400. we plan on having it fixed soon. i constantly feel unsafe driving this car when the speedometer malfunctions. i feel gm should be responsible for the cost of repair.

My car won't start. the security light sometimes flashes or remains steady, in either event, my car won't start. it happens at least 2 times a day. the most recent time was moments ago when i tried to start the car. now, i can't continue with my work day because it won't start. i have had to miss work as well as other important appointments because of this. i have been researching this problem to see if other chevy owners have had or are currently experiencing the same problem, and there are many many others who shared there experiences on topix.com and carcomplaints.com. i think this is absolutely ridiculous. what if it was a life or death situation???? in addition, winter is fast approaching, and are we supposed to be stranded outside in below zero temperatures???

The pass loc system will not allow my wife's car to crank at times. you have to leave the key in the ignition for 10 mins before the car will start. this has happen when my wife and my twin girls were in a bad place and had to lock the doors and just sit in 90 deg weather chevy dealer has no answers. this is a safety problem what has to happen before they are made to fix it someone has to be killed or raped because the car won't crank.

Low beams are no longer operable on the car. seems to be a running theme with the chevy impala cars. 2004 chevy impala i have already spent more in repairs than to purchase the vehicle. transmission, front drive line and now my passlock locks me out of the car- car won't turn on for sometimes 3 days. lights quit working about one month ago i live in hawaii and can't get my car to pass safety inspection to get my sticker so i now have a car with 60,000 miles that can't be driven on the road, can't be sold. impala's are money sucking dangerous lemon vehicles. i can't afford to fix it can't sell it so now what the hell am i supposed to do with this car????????????

I was driving my 2004 impala at night and lights went out. one side had blinked before but came right back on. last night i had to abandon my car. when i picked it up this morning the lights turn on again. totally unsafe and unreliable. i checked online for a possible cause and found that this is an extreem problem with impalas, chevy should fix this before someone gets killed!
06/21/2010123077
2004 chevy impala the manufacturer installed passlock system continuously locks the car from being cranked. everything will operate properly except being able to crank the vehicle. this happens about every 20 times you crank the vehicle. you have to wait at least 10 minutes before the vehicle will crank. if you take the key out of the ignition during that time it is likely that the system will not reset itself, thus starting the process over again. i contacted 2 gm dealerships who said they could not fix it. had another mechanic look into it and he tried replacing the ignition but that didn't work either. that cost nearly $800.00. nowi sit in the blazing sun or freezing cold or rain and wait for the car to finally start. gm needs to fix this for all owners at no charge. sadly for them, it is not just impalas that are having this trouble; it is across the entire product line of gm models.

Approx. 2007 - speedometer began fluctuating intermitently every few weeks. it corrected for a few weeks, then the problem would return. the frequency of the problem became worse in 2008. in 2009 it would fluctuate wildly, then peg to the maximum for extended periods(several weeks). finally, it pegged to the maximum and has not returned. inquiries result in estimates exceeding $500.00 to repair.

My 2004 chevy impala speedometer has stopped working. the temperature gauge does not work at all and the fuel gauge works some time. this car is in otherwise excellent condition. knowing your speed is certainly a safety issue. the dealer says getting it fixed is not a problem just give them hundreds of dollars.

2004 chevy impala will not start.radio and windows will function, but car will not start....this will last about 10 to 15 minutes. this is the second time this has happened.this occurs about every 2 weeks.
04/12/201095891
The speedometer will all of a sudden stop working and not give an accurate reading, and it makes clicking noise when it happens. it occurs around once or twice a week normally, with minimal driving. the dash has to be replaced to correct the issue, there are many other people with this problem and it should be fixed at the company's expense. this is a safety issue because i could be going the wrong speed and not have enough time to react to somthing such as a deer if i am going faster than it says i am or if i have to guess my speed.

2004 chevy impala, 35,000 miles. was driving down the interstate and noticed that temperature gauge was reading in the red, pulled into a mcdonalds to see what was going on (normally the impala has an alarm that goes off when overheating, this did not happen) as i decelerated, i noticed that the speedometer did not move, but rather stayed at 60mph, and the temperature guage also did not move. upon turning the car off, the speedometer moved back to 0, the temperature guage stayed in the red. turning the car back on did not reset the temp guage, but as i accelerated, the spedometer stayed at 0 for the rest of the trip (i had to use gps to get speed). the speedometer has not worked correctly since. doing some inspection later, i found this is an extremely common problem in impalas of most 2000-2010 impalas. our local police force drives impalas, and the speedometers fail on roughly 60% at between 30k and 60k miles. a quick search online also revealed that it is a severe problem, and several people have been either pulled over, or had been going much to fast before noticing. dealership says the only way to fix it is a complete replacement of instrument cluster($150 used, $400 new), and several people who have gotten the replacement simply have the problem again. as you can see, this is an extremely severe problem, and while the employees at the dealership say it happens all the time (at least 3 impalas with faulty spedometers per week), chevy as a company does not seem to notice. please help! links to some repair forums about similar problems: http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-impala/tjsmiqpd8j0ft5dk8 http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/impala/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_gone_haywire.shtml http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic640920.htm http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t752665.html

I have a 2004 impala and about once a week it won't start for about 10-15 minutes. have to sit there a jiggle the key around. took it in and the chevy garage could not figure it out at all and i was charge for this answer i dont know something is seriously wrong when you have thousands of people complaining of the very same thing in their impala. i received all kinds of possible solutions like a new computer that costs over a $1000.00 give me a break.

Dash gauges not moving at all, or when they do work they are not even close to being correct. my speed will show i'm going over 120 mph (i know i am not going 60). temp shows the car is running hot when's it not. rpm will stay on red. some days the gauges will work fine and then all of a sudden they will go haywire. i am terrified that my gas gauge is going to stop working or show i have more gas that i do and i end up running out of gas. i am a 24 year old female and i don't know what i do if i ran out of gas somewhere all alone. i don't know what to put for as the date. it just started happening and i continue to have the problem. i googled 2004 impala gauges and there are a lot of people having the same problem. some one is going to get hurt by not knowing how fast they are going, someone could be having problems with there motor and will not able to tell (running hot, low oil, etc).

I have a 2004 chevy impala that the electronic instrument cluster does not work on. the gas gauge, temp gauge, and speedometer have not worked consistently on this car since i purchased this car back on 09/2007. the speedometer will show that i am going 0 miles an hour when i am actually moving, and my gas gauge will be pointing straight down, same as my temp gauge. i have taken the car back to bill seidle chevrolet, the dealer that i purchased it from, and they will not address the issue. i have also contacted chevorlet about this situation and was told that it is not important enough and life threating enough to have this addressed. even though there are blogs out there with hundreds of people with the exact same problem that i am experiencing. i feel that this is extremely dangerous not just to my 2004 chevy impala but to virtually every gm owner since thru 2005, that there is a serious known safety issue resulting from the failure of the instrument cluster unable to determine speed of vehicle, when or if a vehicile is overheating, unable to determine how much or if any gas remains in the vehicle, these are serious issues when driving a 2004 chevy impala. a driver has no way of knowing critical information needed when driving a vehicle. the gas gauge, temp gauge, speedometer do not work. chevy is aware of the issue and has consistently refused to make repairs of the faulty instrument panel. i emplore you to please demand the chevy recall on this electronic instrument cluster failures for the safety of all of us. i challenge you to google 2004 chevy impala, invariably every result will pertain to electronic instrument cluster. how could this not rise to the level requiring a recall?

2004 chevrolet impala, instrument cluster gauge malfunction, beginning with temperature gauge showing incorrect temperature (cold start - temp readout 160 f), subsequently showing traction system failure indicator, finally progressed to speedometer failure at highway speed approximately one week later - speedometer began showing random speeds at approximately-steady cruise, reading 42 mph at about 70 mph. internet research demonstrates multiple such instances. chevrolet has addressed identical problem in silverado and avalanche models, but refuses to acknowledge that a problem exists in the impala.

2004 chevrolet impala speedometer stopped working properly. it sticks(does not return to 0 mph when stopped) at the current speed on deceleration and increases readings from the deceleration point. so, car appears to going at 60 mph even though it is moving slowly in traffic. cannot determine proper speed to adjust speed to speed limits. my car registered 120 mph in a school zone, even though i was trying to maintain proper speed. this defect makes the driver unable to determine actual speed vehicle is moving at. *tr

The headlights on my 2004 chevy impala randomly go out at night without any warning. this seems to be caused by a defective dimmer switch. the only way to get the lights back on is by activating/flicking the dimmer switch so as to switch between high/low beams. no significant events led up to this problem. it appeared randomly and without any warning. this problem occurred roughly once every two weeks throughout several months until the dimmer switch had completely failed. approximately halfway through the time period from onset of the problem until failure of the switch, the switch itself began to feel odd. it would allow the headlights to change beam without actually clicking into position. during the latter half of the failure period, the light failure seemed consistent with the improper operation of the switch. the switch now is completely failed with my lights stuck on low beam. i can pull back on the switch to activate the high beams, but they do not remain on when i release the switch. the lights go back to low beam. i am currently in the process of changing the switch which is proving very costly. *tr

I just had my second multi-function switch (headlight dimmer, turn signal, cruise, wiper/washer) fail on this car for the same reason resulting in complete loss of headlights. this is a very common issue as seen by numerous bulletin board postings. i dissected the original switch to determine if this could be fixed. it became quite obvious what was happening. the contacts on the hi/lo beam portion of the switch foul and overheat. this switch had melted plastic from the switch housing that had flowed over the contacts and prevented proper switch operation. this is an incredibly dangerous situation that manifests itself with little or no warning. this overheating is obviously due to poor engineering that has resulted in undersized contacts that foul due to relatively high load currents in the headlight circuit. *tr

Sometime around 2007 the instrument cluster started to mess up. it would say that i was going 100 mph when i was parked in my drive way. my tachometer would say that the engine was doing 5000 to 6000 rpm when parked in my drive way. i did a little research on the internet and discovered i am no the only one with this problem. i called chevy and they told me that there were no recall on my vehicle. the problems still exists today. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet impala is having problems with the entire instrument cluster. there are thousands or the same complaints about impala models from 2003-2006, as well as other chevy models. the gas gauge has gone completely out, and the volt gauge has now stopped working, and the speedometer randomly goes haywire and moves erratically, reading incorrectly. the most common report is that gm has installed a defective stepper motor in the instrument cluster of these models. and the dealers estimate a repair cost of $600 to replace the cluster completely. this is a dangerous safety issue. gm need to step up and recall this obviously defective part.*cw

2004 chevy impala. 3 months ago the tachometer stopped working. now the speedometer reads 120 mph when vehicle is not moving. when traveling with traffic on the interstate it is a problem to not know my correct speed. just as going too fast can cause accidents so can going too slow on the interstate. it will cost over $500 to fix at the dealership. the car only has 68,000 miles. *tr

The instrument panel is malfunctioning. first, the tachometer stopped working at all, now the speedometer indicates erroneous speeds. it shows that i am driving very fast when i'm actually much slower than the rest of the traffic. when parked, it shows 15-20 mph. it's very unsafe to drive without knowing your real speed, especially on long trips on the highway. since the problem is quite common, gm should issue a recall to avoid such negative publicity. *tr

First noticed a problem over a year ago when the tachometer went to zero while cruising down the interstate highway. the next time i drove the car it was fine. recently i noticed that the coolant temp gauge was reading way past hot, however the car was not overheating. it continues to read this way. next it was the speedometer reading much faster than actual speed, approximately 50 to 70 mph high. once again the tachometer has gone haywire as well. since this started i have noted that the tach and speedometer are functioning, (they movie higher and lower with changes in engine and vehicle speed) but appear to have lost their zero reference. i recalled that they would normally drop to below zero and then snap to zero when the key is first turned on. with the engine off i repeatedly cycled the key on then off, gradually backing the tach and speedometer to zero. they then functioned properly for a short time before wigging out again. it is my guess that the problem lies in the gauges losing their home pulse. so far, the fuel gauge has continued to operate normally. this failure is very dangerous as well as leaving me open to speed related tickets as i can only estimate my speed based on experience. after researching this problem and discovering the high number of complaints already filed with nhtsa it seems to me that this problem should result in a recall of these vehicles. *tr

The night of 12/13, my temperature gauge was reading very high. i checked my coolant and did some trouble shooting. my car was not over heating as indicated on the gauge. two days later, this problem resolved, however another problem with the speedometer developed. on 12/15, my speedometer was reading 60mph while i was parked in a parking garage. as i accelerated (going no more than 10mph) my speedometer was reading 120mph. it now rests at 120mph while parked and the needle goes above any readable mph while driving. since dec 15th, i have no idea how fast i am actually driving. *tr

I have had a number of problems with my 2004 chevy impala, it started with my temperature gauge not reading correctly, blinkers working when they wanted too and then the speedometer one day just stopped at 5 mph. the final straw was that my security light came on and after i shut my vehicle off and try to restart it, it would not start. i would have to wait for about 20 minutes to start my vehicle. this has happened numerous times and i finally had to spend over $1200.00 dollars to get my vehicle fixed. not happy with chevy. *tr

My speedometer stopped working about a year ago. one day i was driving at it just stopped working. after i turned my car off and then back on a little later it started to work again. then it would randomly stop working and then work fine again later. it would either stop working all together or read the numbers wrong by saying i was doing 45 mph when i wasn't even moving. i didn't have the money to spend on getting it fixed so i borrowed my boyfriends gps so i could read my speed. since then i noticed a pattern of the problems, every time i was getting close to the time to change my oil it would start acting up again. now the problem has gotten worse and all my gauges are acting the same way. my fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and speedometer all pick and choose when they want to work and when they don't and they frequently don't work now. i decided to see if there was a recall and noticed that this was a common problem in this type of car. from how common this problem seems to be there should have been a recall on this a long time ago. *tr

My instrument panel also went out in winter of 2007. called gm directly who refused to help with this problem. my father in law owns an avalanche and received recall notice for the instrument panel for his truck and other large suv's that are made by chevrolet. the years covered included 2004. if gm knows that the instrument panels were bad for other models, why haven't they been recalled for the impalas. my car did the same thing; driving approx 40 mph and car read 75 mph. the speedometer read 120 mph on the highway that day when cars were flying by me. this is most definitely a safety issue. unfortunately, gm seems to be waiting for serious injury or death before recalling the bad parts. this goes along with the steering column shafts being bad also. what a joke!! i too will never purchase another american made car as long as i am able to drive. i had to take gm to court over my car due to the car being in the shop approx. 25 times for repairs before it was 4 years old. my whole car has basically been replaced (including the instrument panel and steering column shaft) except for the slipping transmission now. i take very good care of my car as i have the indy motor speedway ss. paid a lot of $$ for nothing. it's no wonder gm is going under. their cars are junk and they don't stand behind their products. what a shame. hopefully no one has serious injury due to all the safety failures with these cars. *tr

Fall of 2008 noticed that my security light was coming on while i was driving and then when i would start my vehicle it would not start. called my dealership and they told me it could be a few things and that if i tried to start my vehicle and it would not start to shut off the ignition and wait about 20 mins, winter of 2008 noticed that the temperature gauge was completely over running as hot as it could go. brought it in to my chevrolet dealer and they did a test on it and said it was fine and that just make sure if it started to have smoke from the hood to get it in. i then lost my speedometer and my turn signals and called yet again to see if there by any chance was a recall because it had become obvious to me that after searching on line that there seems to be some sort of defect with the computer board somewhere. spoke with chevrolet again to find out that there was no recall on this problem. brought my vehicle in on march 4, 2009 and paid out of my pocket $1100.95 to get my vehicle where i could trust it. my vehicle is a 2004 chevrolet and when the problems started it had less than 44,000 miles on it. *tr

The cluster for the 2004 chevy impala. it makes not sense that this system goes out after 75,000 miles on a car. the dealer ship want to charge 600.00 to replace the part for the car. i will never buy another american car because of this problem and the problem i am having with the security light keep coming on, and then shutting the engine off for 15min until the car will run again. that happen when i was out late at night and i was the only one left in the parking lot waiting on my car to start. i feel that is a security problem with my safety. i have to keep taking my car to the dealership to have that problem reset. my cluster is still out don't know how fast i am driving nor if my car is running hot, nor how gas i have n my car. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy impala that started having problems with the speedometer. the speedometer will read the wrong speed when it is moving and standing still. it would even read over 120mph when the car is turned off. i am an electronics technician and do almost all of my auto work myself. i have 2 brothers that are mechanics. it seems to me that the stepper motors are going bad inside the instrument cluster. the cluster should be recalled, but i cannot wait for this to happen. i found a gm parts website and tried to order the whole new cluster from them for $154.64. it only took me 20 minutes to pull the old one out. i received an e-mail stating that gm will no longer let the average person buy this instrument cluster. you now need to get it from a dealer at a largely inflated price. what a scam. not only are we dealing with a safety issue, it sounds like there is a scam going on also. i hope this is not being done to protect the dealers. i think that gm needs to step up to the plate and make things right with all of these upset people. i'll bet none of these people will buy another gm product again, including me. *tr

Car intermittently fails to start. power to accessories good, but ignition will not work. after 30 minutes or so, it starts, with no problems for 1 -2 months, then it happens again. i took it to the dealer, who read the code and replaced a part, but after a few moths it started happening again. *tr

I was driving my car and notice that i was going 80mph, but i could not have been going that fast. i pulled over to the side of the road scared! noticed that my car was still stuck on 80mph. a few weeks later the gage that tells me that the car is over heating went out on me as well. it cost way to much to repair this defect that many people are having with this make and model of car. *tr

Just driving normally to and from work the speedometer will stop working not allowing the driver to be able to tell how fast they are going. even after shutting the car off the speedometer will not display the proper speed the vehicle is traveling. this is the same failure that gm had made a recall for their trucks and suv's but will not fix the car's gauge clusters. *tr

At 38,000 miles...the speedometor fails when you are on the highway. at first it just slowly dropped to 0. then the thermometer went haywire; i ck'd the engine everything was fine...it registers all around the globe now. now the speedometoer works when it wants to....i travel a lot, and this thing settles down after a long trip hopefully...last time it went to the bottom of the gauge. i just can't wait for a cop to see my malfunction. can he still give me a ticket if i legally have no idea how fast i am traveling? legally you should get that ticket! make me see a judge gm! i bought a gm certified car in order to find out that it does not mean anything! your brakes are killing me too! my boss's toyota is going on 80,000 mi. they will be good for 100,000.00 mi. i am the one putting on the highway miles here! i am at approx. 50,000.00 miles. remember...i got the car at 28,000.00 miles. i am a highway traveler.....in just a year i have put on 20,000.00 miles. highway miles! i think gm got bad brakes! the rotors are done! i thought i was buying a safe trustworthy car. i got trash. i will buy foreign next time; especially if you do not cover my instrument cluster gone wrong! *tr

Along with several hundred others on this same page, the instrument cluster on the 2004 chevrolet impala is failing. temp gauge quit working a few weeks ago, now the speedometer has failed. creates an unsafe condition. chevrolet denies knowledge of defect, but dealer does acknowledge; however, will cost $500-700 to repair. since this is a know defect, and a significant safety issue, why does nhtsa take no action? *tr

The speedometer started reading incorrectly. it goes up, but does not go back down when you slow down. now the temperature gauge is doing the same thing. i also owned a 2004 chevrolet silverado 4x4 that had the same problem. the chevrolet dealer repaired the problem at no cost to me. however, when i contacted chevrolet about the 2004 impala, i was told that they knew about the problem, but were not correcting it at that time under any recall. if i wanted the problem fixed, i would have to pay for it myself. i feel that this is a safety issue that chevrolet should correct as they did with the 2004 silverado. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet impala stops working randomly. it sometimes goes up way past 120 mph. oddly, i'm able to reset it by turning the car off and the turning the key to the a/c position. this only sets the speedometer back a little way each time so i have to turn the key back and forth like 20 times to get the speedometer to reset back to zero. it'll work fine for a little while and then it'll go crazy again. *tr

The speedometer became erratic and completely stopped working; stuck on 80 or 100 mph at all times. dangerous to drive in poor weather due to inability to judge speed of vehicle accurately. this could lead to possible motor vehicle accident and/or speeding tickets. nothing done by owner at this time due to costly repair; feel gm recall appropriate due to many online complaints for same issue. this equipment should be recalled. *tr

Driving my 2004 chevrolet impala on the expressway, at the speed limit of 65 in rush hour traffic my speedometer started advancing until it was over 120mph. i maintain my place, pacing the other but i had no idea of my speed. i found out that impalas have a history of defective speedometers. since my vehicle was over warranty, they wanted to charge me to replace the speedometer. a gm mechanic told me how to temp fix it, but i recurs often. gm must recall these defective speedometers! even if you take your vehicle to a mechanic or gm dealership you don't know if the temp fixed it or actually replaced the speedometer? someone is going to get killed because they can not judge their highway speed. i understand that some other gm vehicles (eg.tahoe) has the same problem. can you get us a recall and fix? gm mechanics know about this problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet impala ls. while driving 35 mph, the speedometer dial suddenly began to rise. the dial did not stop and went into the hundreds when the vehicle was really only traveling at an estimated speed of 35 mph. the contact depressed the brake pedal, but the failure still occurred. when the vehicle was restarted, the dial did not move. after a few days, the dial began to drop and eventually went back to zero. the dealer stated that the steeper motor cluster needed to be replaced, which has not yet been done. the manufacturer refuses to assume responsibility for the defect. through research, the contact found numerous complaints regarding the same defect. the current and failure mileages were 63,000.

While driving to chicago the tachometer went all the way to the red. after pulling over to confirm the car was not running hot, i found that i could reset the gauge by slowly turning the key on and off to the accessory position; until the needle reached its original position. this continued to happen sporadically for a month or so, and then i noticed i was driving on the interstate with the flow of traffic, but the speedometer was only reading 30 miles per hour. i had previously used my cruise control at the set speed, and was able to use the 'resume' button to give me an approximation of how fast i was currently going. this allowed me to get home safely. again, i was able to reset the speedometer by turning the key in the ignition to the on and off position. the next failure came shortly thereafter, with the gas gauge. knowing that it was a full tank, it was reading empty; again being reset with the on/off of the key in the ignition. i took the car to the local dealership to get these safety issues taken care of, and was informed this was going to cost me $600 because it was out of warranty... it only has 40k miles on the vehicle. i have been trying to resolve this through chevrolet ever since then, and they agreed to pay 1/2. this only leads me to believe that it is indeed a safety issue that should be covered by the manufacturer. i can't drive a vehicle without a speedometer, tachometer, or gas gauge, and i can only wonder how many other individuals are out there that have been in this same situation. *tr

Speedometer on 2004 impala stops working--freezes up. have to stop car and about 15 to 30 minutes for speedometer to work. this malfunction of the speedometer is occurring more and more. dealer and chevrolet customer service said that they would not pay to fix this problem. gm issued a bulletin #07187b stating that they would repair this problem on 2003-2004chevrolet avalanche, silverado, suburban, tahoe along with gmc sierra, yukon etc. i want to know why the 2004 chevrolet impala is not included in this extended warranty that they issued as it is the same problem as the other vehicles.(definitely a safety problem) please help me. *tr

Intermittent vechile speedometer. & tachometer starting two days ago, the speedometer on this vechile started acting odd. after turning a curve, the speedometer rose to 70mph and remainded there. had to turn my key from the on to off position many times to get it to reset. however this fix only worked for a few minutes. i am afraid that if i continue to do the key cycle, my starter will be worn out. according to a chevrolet dealership, the repair cost for this will be $600. i do not understand why this issue has not been brought up to the attention of gm for a recall. many people have attempted to do so; however, gm does not seem to care. this type of issue can cause many issues up to and including road hazards. it would be wise for gm to place out a recall for this. i will be collecting emails for this at the following e-mail addy: *tr

I bought a 2004 chevy impala drove it less then one year when the instrument panel began to not work. it started out by giving a high temp. reading then the speedometer would not go back down to 0 when stopped. when the car drove again the speedometer would increase where it left off. i was able to reset the speedometer by turning the ignition to accessory then off then back on; it would go down in small increments. this temporary fix is no longer working and the speedometer does not work at all. i have gone to numerous websites and this appears to be a common problem on this car once the mileage reaches above 50000. i would like for there to be a recall so that chevy is required to replace this defective part at their expense. *tr

My speedometer was reading 75 and it felt like we were barely moving. i pulled over to the side of the road and stopped, the speedometer read 40 miles an hour.. so we continued on our way home, and it is still stuck on 15. i will get checked out as soon as possible. the reason that i'm complaining is that i just learned of your web site by browsing on my pc for warranty's on 2004 impala's. i read a lot of the complaint's about people complaining about there impala's. i noticed that i have or have had the same problems that they have, or have had with the stepper motors going bad. sounds like there is a recall type problem here that gm is not taking care of it has to do with all gm products for the years 2003 to 2006. this is not a part that can be abused by the car owner. it is a defective part and needs to be replaced by the manufacture. there is a very serious safety issue here and needs to be taken care of before someone gets hurt or killed. there is thousands of people with the same problem i have seen searching the web for impala speedometer problems. *tr

Speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet impala has stopped working properly and gives erroneous readings. can read anywhere from 0 to 120+ mph at normal highway speeds and from 0 to 60 mph when you are stopped at a traffic light. additionally, the temperature gauge instrument is also malfunctioning. the vehicle was taken to the chevrolet dealer and they inform me that the repair will cost $460.00. the speedometer defect is extremely hazardous as this is an important piece of safety equipment. i contacted chevrolet customer service 800-222-1020 who advised that they have a service bulletin #07-187 for this same problem on other chevrolet models but the impala is not included on the bulletin. nhtsa now has 48 pages of complaints on this same problem with the same vehicle. *tr

After 20 to 30 minutes on the interstate, the speedometer slowly falls to 20 or 0 mph, all while you are still moving at around 70 mph. the odometer continues to function during this time. if you stop the vehicle, the speedometer seems to recalibrate, and takes another 20 to 30 minutes to reinduce. no trouble codes were set. to replicate the problem, you would need to get a dealer to drive on the highway for 1/2 an hour...it never fails around town. the dealer acted like they had never heard of such a thing, but they wanted big $$ to replace the instrument cluster. based on piles of corroborating information online, i replaced the instrument cluster stepper motors myself with switch part # x25.168 which fixed the problem. if you are handy, you can do it in an hour with only a screwdriver and a solder iron. the failing speedometer motor that i removed was binding slightly; the working motors for the fuel and temp gauges were not. gm's denial of this problem while it is all over the internet is hard to understand. i guess they would go bankrupt if they replaced the failing clusters, but they would not even provide information like the gm part number for the failing motor, nor would they identify the vendor. i had to use news group hearsay and order the parts from a vendor on ebay. *tr

I am a single parent, mother of 2 boys who travels with me everytime i drive my car, for about 2 weeks now in my 2004 chevy impala the speedometer has not worked, when my car is parked the speedometer reads 60 mph and when i drive my car the speedometer had gone past the 120 mph all the way to the d for drive. i am so upset i can not afford to pay for a new cluster because from my internet search that seems to be the problem i don't have that kind of money. it's a safety issue because i don't know how fast i am really going sometime i might be going to slow for the person behind me and they might get upset thinking i am doing it on purpose an follow me out of anger who knows and if i am going to fast i may cause an accident. this is not good somebody has to do something about this, i am sooooooo upset. *tr

I have noticed that for the past few weeks, whenever the temperature is below 20 degrees, the speedometer acts funny. the speedometer reads anywhere from 25 to 80 miles faster than my actual speed; today, i wasn't going any more than 30mph at the most, and the speedometer needle was pointing directly down to the car floor. a few people on a couple of message boards suggested turning the ignition key to 'accessories' on and off rapidly several times, but all it did was bring the speedometer down from 85 to 70. *tr

2004 chevy impala speedometer erratic, may show 85mph when traveling 50-55mph,or 40mph when traveling 70mph. when problem occurs you can re-zero the speedometer by turning the ignition switch on and off a number of times to get the needle back to zero, because with power off the needle is usually from 35-40mph indication to below zero indication. cold weather seems to make it not work at all until the vehicle warms up inside the car. i have a case file with chevrolet for monetary help, but i also believe this is a safety issue. thank you! *tr

Electrical system: instrument panel i just purchased a 2004 impala with 97k on it and while driving home at 65-70 mph it stated i was going 110-130. it created a very dangerous driving condition because their was light traffic and it is very distracting. i was unable to determine my speed the entire time. i believe this could be the cause of an accident because if this problem happens when you are going slower that it states what if it happens when you are going faster. serious potential to cause accidents because it happens randomly and does not go away. *tr

Driving on a trip and all of a sudden my speedometer mph indicator jumper to 90 mph as i was sitting at a stop light. when i proceeded forward the indicator needle reset you 90 mph and this reset continued until it was pointing straight down. it did not reset after turning the ignition off and on. i had no idea how fast my vehicle was going after that. i went to a web site for auto troubles and found 72 reports of the same problem with gm speedometers. i strongly feel that this should have been a recall since a nonfunctional speedometer is a safety hazard. ps - other gm models also have reports of this malfunctioning speedometers. gm want $500 to replace the entire speedometer, when a simple capacitor fix is all that is required. a temp fix works for a few weeks, they it happens again and gm said if you replace the speedometer and it happens again, then it costs another $500 to replace the replacement? gm wants to fleece us! *tr

I bought a used 2004 impala in aug. 2008 and basically since the first day i got it i have had problems with the speedometer. the dealer promised to have it repaired, but has yet to do so. they keep giving me the run around, and now for the past month my stereo has stopped working. yesterday my fuel gauge started going haywire. the interior lights only work sometimes. the low tire pressure warning light wont reset. this is a safety problem that needs to be recalled. because of my speedometer not working i almost went off the side of a freeway on ramp from not being able to tell how fast i was going. i just had to pray that i had slowed down enough to make the curve. is someone going to have to be seriously injured or die before there is a recall on this. i have been to several websites researching the 2004 impala and there are hundreds of complaints all saying the same thing. its time that gm takes responsibility and does something about it. i am not able to have my car repaired because of the cost. it's way to expensive. i will never buy another gm vehicle. *tr

2004 chevy impala, 3.4l -- speedometer stops working after driving the car for about an hour. the problem seems more prone to appear if you are on the freeway going a nearly constant speed for a sustained amount of time. speedometer will work normally on short trips, or after the car has been sitting for a while. eventually, at some point, the problem happens again. specifically upon failure, when the vehicle is decelerating, the speedo needle drops, eventually to 0 (zero), but will not go back up again. this started happening after i purchased the car used (from a dealership), so there's no telling from my perspective how long it's really been happening. the car had approx. 71000 miles on it at the time of purchase. *tr

I have a 2004 impala that has an erratic speedometer movement. i haven't had an accident as a result of this problem, but it has caused me to become confused and anxious about my exact speed. i am concerned about the possibility of having an accident as a result of this problem. i have contacted gm's customers service about this problem and requested they correct it under warranty. they refused to comply with my request. i know this is a problem with other gm vehicles that is being corrected under a recall. i believe it to be the same part failure, only different type vehicle. if i should have an accident as a result of this situation i believe gm will be liable. sometimes the speedometer appears to be working correctly and this only adds to the confusion when it isn't correct. my wife has driven at excessive speeds not knowing the speedometer wasn't correct. we first reported this problem to a chevorlet dealership oct. 2007 although we had first noticed a problem months earlier. the problem progressively worsened. now it's become a real problem, not knowing how fast i'm going and especially in heavy traffic at unknown speeds. *tr

Speedometer and tachometer are acting erratic. gauges are all over the place, either not working at all or is giving me a false reading. if i am driving at 35mph the speedometer might be reading either 15 or 35 or 75, it changes all the time. *tr

Instrument panel we noticed that the temp gauge was reading that the car was overheating when it shouldn't. it was intermittent at first, so we checked fluid levels and everything checked out. then we realized that meter wasn't resetting when we turned off the car. it was operating as though wherever the needle left off was 0, so the car read as overheating. a few months later it spread to the speedometer. sometimes the needle would stick at 10mph and sometimes it would remain at 0. sometimes it would work fine. then one day it also stopped all together and remained at 0. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy impala and have been having problems with it from the day i bought it. when i got the new car i was not informed that the car had been wrecked, yeah, a new car. then for the past few years we have had trouble with it cranking. sometimes it will take up to 2 hours to get it to crank. we had heard that it could be something with the started and the dealer said there isn't anything that we can do because you are over your mileage. this is a very known issue and something needs to be done about it. i have been without my for 24 hours as of 7/26/2008 at 10:23 am because it now will not crank. we have tried all the little secrets that have been working in the past. i am taking it to the shop on monday and hopefully it is not going to cost my both of my legs and arms. i think that gm should do something about these well known problems if they want people to keep buying their cars. i can tell you that i will never buy another gm car if something in the near future isn't done about this problem and i will spread the word all over the internet and here in town. word of mouth can make or break a company. i know i am just one right now but soon i will be many and something will be done. *tr

My impala 2004 has about 41,000 miles on it. the temperature gauge needle went right over to hot, i immediately brought my vehicle in and for a half an hour had it on a machine to let me know if it was serious. the result from this test was, i could get away with driving the vehicle as is and just watch my vehicle for any signs of overheating or get the problem fixed. a month or so later my security light came on and after shutting the vehicle off it was fine. this has happened on a number of occasions now and i called chevrolet and the first mechanic of course told me it was serious and bring it right in and the second chevrolet mechanic told me that it was okay to drive, just turn the vehicle off and wait about 20 min and the vehicle should start. was informed that it will be expensive to get these electrical problems repaired. after reading this sight and speaking with other impala owners i realized that my vehicle is not the only one having this type of problems and perhaps chevrolet should look into this and do the right thing and issue a recall. *tr

The speedometer started getting stuck about six months ago. for about eight months i have noticed that when i turn the steering wheel i hear a noise in the front of the car, like a knock or something. also within the last couple of months i have also smelled gas when i first start the car , my husband could not see any leakage or anything until last week. it was leaking from the fuel regulator valve. now the transmission is starting to shift hard sometimes. i haven't had the money to get it all checked out by the manufacturer but i was wondering if there have been any complaints on any of these things. also i can hear a whistling sound when i press the accelerator. and my husband just informed me that he bought a regulator valve for it and some o rings because something is leaking antifreeze slightly. can you help please!!!!!!!! *tr

The speedometer gauge is not reading correctly. first, it was showing your speed as 120mph, when you were stopped. it was never accurate. then one day, it just stayed at 0mph, even when you were moving. i had it fixed through a gm dealership, and they fixed the cluster. this part should be recalled. i have seen a lot of people with the same car, and same problem. gm needs to realize the danger with this defect. it is not a cheap fix either. i am saving my receipt in hopes that gm will realize the hazards with driving a car this way. *tr
