| Speedometer and tach quit working. would not reset to 0. all other guages continued to work. saw there was a recall on the product for other model years but not on the 2004. dealer said it is not typical but a simple search on line showed a substancial number of complaints. gm got reimbursed by their provider for malfunctioning gauge motors but this was not passed onto the car owners? how can that happen? | |||

| Approximately a year ago my temperature gauge and gas gauge quit working. i was not too concerned because i knew how many miles i could go on a full tank of gas so i just judged my gas by my mileage counter. now this evening my speedometer quit working. while completely stopped, with the engine turned off it said that i was going 30 mph. when i was driving, the needle seemed to jerk a lot. also recently my car seems to be sluggish or act like it is going to stall. i have also had some occasions when my car won't start after just turning the key off. if i wait a little while or overnight then it will start like nothing was wrong. i am very concerned because my 17 year old also drives this vehicle and i have to do a lot of highway driving. | |||

| Every now and then you go to start the car it won't do anything. all the lights, radio, everything comes on as normal but when you turn the key over to start it won't do nothing, click, or anything. one time we left the car over night, locked up, the next day it started like nothing was wrong. another time i let the car sit for 15 mins and it started fine. then another time, i kept trying every 10 to 15 mins for an hr but nothing. then let it sit for 25 to 30 mins then nothing but i left the key in on position for a couple minutes while all the lights ran and then it started fine. some people say its the starter, ignition or even the security. a lot of people have had this problem there's even videos of people complaining. id say that there's something that needs to be looked into so everyone w these vehicles know what's wrong. thanks | |||

| Vehicl stalled out / stopped while traveling down the road. it has done it twice now. this car is fully equipped with cruise control and traction control. after the first time (three days ago) we took it to a dealer and they could not find any code (s) and or replicate it. it just happened again today. both times the car started right up. this could be a disaster at high speeds on an interstate. thank you. | |||

| I have a chevy impala and the service traction light comes on, the traction off light stays on and the abs light stays on then when you use your brakes it is like the brake is pushing your foot back up. this is going to cause someone to get hurt. i have replaced the wheel bearings 5-6 times in a year. it will work for a very few months and then it starts all over again. last thursday i had put an expensive set of the wheel bearings on it and brakes all way round on the car. it did not make it out of the shop before all of these lights started coming back on. so i had new wheel bearings put back on it again today and it is still doing this. gm needs to have this problem fixed. they should do a recall and fix this problem, from what i can read on the internet there is a lot of people having this same issue and it is costing everyone a lot of money. | |||

| I have a chevy 2004 impala in we been having problems since we got it last year one day the car started shaking in it cut off we got it fixed a couple months later it's back doing the same thing it did at i'm sick in tired of spending my money on getting all this self fix in for it to happen again i look on internet in know a lot of people with the same problem and i'm pretty sure you seen a lot of complaints so i think it's time for a recall 2000-2011 these cars are messing up big time | |||

| 1) tried to slow car down. car would not turn nor halt. ended up hitting the vehicle in front of me. restored it 100%. 2) a year later, had 3 brand new rack and pinion's replaced in one month. had the vehicle checked out. the a-frame is in excellent shape and so is the area surrounding the rack and pinon. have pictures and mechanics as proof. 3) called the chevy company & was told that the car was manufactured in wisconsin. they claim they saw no reason to help with the rack & pinion as those cars were recall-free. 4) car leans towards oncoming traffic at times (this started after each rack and pinion was replaced). there is also a 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock dead zone in the steering column. steering used to feel a bit normal. it was not like this until i had a new rack and pinion put on. twice (in between) the boot would excessively leak (as did the original from chevy). 5) when i turn the wheel out of the driveway, the car makes kick drumming grinding sounds. was told this was normal. it is irritating though. 6) the car didn't even hit it's 5th year (being new) before it started to rust paint off the top of its roof. i live where there is no snow or coast, and extremely little ice. 7) the check engine light never goes off. had it checked. was told it was fine. 8) was driving right next to a cop going down a steep hill when the speedometer stuck at 10 mph. i crossed my fingers that i wasn't speeding since i kept my speed next to the officer. replaced. 9) combo turning signal & cruise broke off the steering for no reason during a turn. replaced. 10) locks me out off & on for no reason. 11) this car is my baby as it was one of the last thing i got that was my mother's before she died. it is also my first car that has seen me through (and still) my college years. it is very sentimental to me for those reasons. my dream is to keep this car even when it's a classic. | |||

| Our car, and thousands of others have failing instrument clusters due to a faulty step motor. this is the same part that has caused a recall for other gm vehicles, and yet nothing for this model. i have researched many repair blogs, and websites and find that this is indeed a very common problem. speedometer reads wildly inaccurate at times, close on other occasions, not at all most of the time now. the temperature guage suddenly shoots up, causing my wife to pull to the side of the road and pop the hood, only to find that the car is not overly hot. never really sure when we may run out of gas... why is it that the recall does not apply to all cars and trucks to have received this faulty part? i really cannot find the reasoning to that. chevrolet wants over 600 dollars to fix a part proven to be faulty from the factory!! there are lots of people making a living at repairing this one problem. does it not seem unsafe to sell a car without properly functioning guages?? please step up and force a recall across the board for these motors!!! | |||

| While driving on a highway at 65 mph, i noticed the speedometer needle dropping slowly which it continued to do until it rested at zero. i continued driving at the speed of traffic (65 mph) and all the while the speedometer continued to register 0. i panicked and if i had not been using a gps navigator that told me what rate of speed i was travelling at, god knows what would have happened. i have been on several blogs and see that this problem is very common in the 2004 chevrolet impala. chevrolet should institute a recall as this is extremely dangerous, and is also costly to repair. it seems to afflict all the models at around 40,000 miles. after i stopped to get gasoline, and filled up the tank, the problem seemed to correct itself, but according to the blogs with other owner comments, i have no confidence that this won't happen again without notice. please see that chevrolet recalls this model and makes the repair at no charge. thank you. | |||

| I own a 2004 chevrolet impala sedan which has 123,551 miles on it. i bought it with 108,000. i discovered after i bought it that my speedometer cluster was acting up. i could reset it by turn the key on and off til it reached 0 and both the water temp gauge and speedometer would work for a day or so. now, only the speedometer works by resetting and the water gauge never works. i have seen may other impala complaints for the same reason. they did a recall on the trucks but not on impalas. i feel this should be a recall. 2nd problem. transmission shop diagnosed and replace valve body. still did same jumping in and out of gear so replace again. still does it. was told by another transmission shop who drove my car that it may be control module. it never does it when i take to a transmission shop but my mechanic got it to do it on fri. and said he thought it could either be speedometer cluster related or may a control module. it is an interminent problem and have had since i bought car in dec. 09. another friend said he bought a new 08 and it did same thing. no one ever found out why., | |||

| Speedometer stops tracking speed. it will stop at a random speed and not return to zero upon stopping the car. when i start driving again it will start tracking the speed from the incorrect point that it stopped at previously and then repeat the fault stopping at a totally different mph point. also it will just freeze at random speeds. at times it will go all the way to the highest point on the speedometer and freeze. i would think this is a very high priority on the list of safety items. there should be a recall. | |||

| 2004 impala w/ 3.8l engine stalls when decelerating, leaving the car very difficult and un-safe to drive. currently, the engine starts right back up, but it takes my eyes off the road to put the car in neutral and re-start. i have tried a few inexpensive things such as premium gas, fuel injector cleaner, and a new fuel filter...no affect on the problem. there is no engine light which appears. i have owned this car since new and taken very good care of it. i do not want to take it to a dealership if at all possible because i do not trust them. unfortunately, i may be forced to since this is my only car and i cannot afford a car payment. | |||

| I have a 2004 chevrolet impala that has a huge amount of issues within the dash. my car shows that it is running hot when it is not. it also shows it has no gas when the tank is full. the newest issue is that my speedometer is now stuck on 80 when the car is parked and is well over the 120mph when i am driving on the highway. i have no idea how fast i am going. this is the worse of the three because i or someone could be injured by this. to have people on the road with unsafe vehicles and the manufatur not be held responsible is ridiculous to say the least. there are so many people having this issue and i am not sure why this has not. been recalled. i hope it does not take someone being killed before someone does something! | |||

| My impala is having several safety issues which i have noticed is a common occurrence in these vehicles. i have also noticed gm has not recalled these issues. first safety issue is in the instrument cluster panel in which there are faulty stepper motors that cause my gas gauge, temperature gauge and speedometer to not function at all. not knowing how much gas you have, how fast you are going, or what temperature your car is. these are serious safety issues to any driver. second issue, my pass lock security system is malfunctioning. the security light stays on and causes my car to not start, leaving me and my infant son stranded for up to thirty minutes until it decides to start. shame on gm for not resolving these issues in all their models. when will there be recalls for these obvious safety issues?! this is the last gm car i buy! | |||

| Low beams are no longer operable on the car. seems to be a running theme with the chevy impala cars. 2004 chevy impala i have already spent more in repairs than to purchase the vehicle. transmission, front drive line and now my passlock locks me out of the car- car won't turn on for sometimes 3 days. lights quit working about one month ago i live in hawaii and can't get my car to pass safety inspection to get my sticker so i now have a car with 60,000 miles that can't be driven on the road, can't be sold. impala's are money sucking dangerous lemon vehicles. i can't afford to fix it can't sell it so now what the hell am i supposed to do with this car???????????? | |||

| I have a 2004 chevy impala that has a crazy dash cluster!! i know that i am not the only one!! gm has recalled other types of vehicles with the same type of cluster problem, but won't recall the impalas that are having the same dangerous issue!! i have young two children that are always with me and when i'm driving ; not knowing how fast i am going, not knowing my tempature, or how many rpms my car is pushing! very serious when i'm not the only vehicle on the road. i hope gm addresses this problem for the safety of there customers! hopefully the government can push them to do something!!! we people with this issue will appreciate it greatly!!! thank you | |||

| 2004 chevy impala: the speedometer step servo motor is defective in my car. it started about 2 years ago giving false readings. i found out online that there are thousands of them doing this. the same problem with the same step motors used on other chevy vehicles were actually recalled. this is a dangerous situation. i'm having to use my gps for a speedometer now, and it can be hard to read at times. why hasn't cheverlet extended the recall to the impala's as well.they must be hopeing the car owners will take care of the problem in their vehicles for them? can you do anything about this? the dealerships i've talked to say they expected chevy to do something about it, but they still have not put out the recall on the impala. it's been going on for years now. even before the 2004 model.there are many of these complaints listed 'on line'. thanks, glenn | |||

| The event actually started the day that my wife and i bought the vehicle. we bought our vehicle used from sanger ford in sanger, ca. first the temperature gauge went out. later the speedometer stopped working and now our fuel gauge doesn't work. the mechanic at sanger ford stated that it was the cluster and it was not covered under warranty and told us it would cost $507.45 to replace. we have since spoken to gm, who instructed us to get a diagnostic and they would take it from there. we paid $85 for a diagnostic at tom benson chevrolet in san antonio, tx. gm then told us that there is no recall for the cluster on the impala, but there are recalls on the chevy tahoe, suburban and the silverado and that if we wanted it replaced we could deduct the cost of the diagnostic from what tom benson wanted to charge to replace it, which was $500. i have seen comments online from other '04 impala owners complaining about their cluster going out, they just either paid to have it replaced and the ones who didn't have the money to replace it, like myself, are stuck with not knowing how fast they are driving, how much gas they have or if their engine is running hot. please help us. i know that this is a major problem and gm doesn't want to have to pay to fix it. *tr | |||
