2005 chevrolet impala speedometer not working properly. it reads much faster than you are actually going, often times 40mph +. the problem started on a long trip. cycling the ignition would bring it back to zero, but that no longer works. there is not one single event that triggers the problem. it cause the driver to maintain speed either way too slow for traffic or way too fast. creating unsafe conditions. parts are available, but the parts and labor will cost a minimum of $460.00. buying a used part is not a viable option since the instrument cluster is coded to the car. a simple google search produces many thousands of complaints about this problem, yet gm will not run a recall on this. they recalled the silverado with the same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact stated the speedometer was exhibiting failures by inaccurately reading the speed of which the vehicle traveled. in order to maintain an accurate speed, he would have to utilize the cruise control mechanism. the dealer advised the contact that the entire instrument cluster would need to be replaced. the contact was concerned that only the stepper motor would need replacement as opposed to the entire instrument cluster. he was also concerned with being unable to determine the rate of speed in which he was traveling. the failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

2005 chevrolet impala. speedometer works only intermittently. sticks at zero when it isn't working. at times, when functioning, though i increase speed or decrease, needle doesn't move in timely manner thus not accurately reporting current speed; needle lags way behind changes in speed. this is dangerous as i can not determine how fast i am going, especially in areas such as school zones where others are anticipating a certain speed and i am sometimes exceeding it unknowingly leading to some close calls with me almost hitting people who pull out in front of me; if i were able to determine my speed accurately and travel at that speed there would not be these close calls. not covered by warranty due to intermittent problem not complete failure and as warranty is almost expired and will be too cost prohibitive (in excess of $800 and several weeks without a vehicle) to get it fixed after warranty ends so i will have no option but to dangerously and knowingly drive a car not able to determine my speed due to gm's failure to fix this problem that they are more than aware of as they have received multiple complaints. to me, this is a huge safety issue for myself and others i encounter on the roadway and i feel it is chevrolets responsibility to fix this problem for all of us as they used motors in the instrument cluster that are prone to failure! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving speeds ranging from approximately 35 mph or more, the speedometer and the temperature gauges displayed inaccurate readings regardless of the speed being traveled. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction at this time. the failure mileage was 100,000.

2005 chevy impala speedometer very sporadic in working may say you are going 40 and you are going 75 or may say you are going 80 and you are going 35 extremes to 120 and lows to 0. it started messing up around 70,000 miles and the dealer says this is not a recall even though many people are having this problem with the impalas, please help. *tr
10/20/2009890001
The instrument cluster in my 2005 chevy impala experiences periodic malfunctions. the speedometer will read significantly over the actual speed or will remain at zero. the fuel and temperature gauges also read incorrectly. my research indicates that these are common complaints for 2000 to 2006 chevy vehicles yet no recall has been announced. this is a safety hazard that should be addressed through a recall. *tr
05/01/2008650001
Speedometer gauge does not work properly. when you drive it never displays the correct speed you are going and can read many different speeds as you drive. it can also remain at 0. this is happening on many chevrolet models and can cause you to get multiple tickets for not going the correct speed limit. this should not be left to the consumer to repair for $700 as this a gm/chevrolet problem. look on several websites and put in a chevy model and you will see that this is an ongoing problem and should be recalled. *tr

My 2005 impala that has 47,000 miles on is nolonger has working speedometer, gas gauge or temp gauge. this is a safety issue due to i nolonger have correct information on the speed that i'm driving with my children in the car. i can only use my educated guess on how much gas i have and will not know that my car is overheating. this could cause a fire and we wouldn't know until it was too late. i have spoken with gm reguarding the insturment cluster problem they told me that it has only been recalled on trucks . this issue thur a mechcanic will cost me $500.00 + to have fixed however reading complaints online its very obvious that this issue needs to be recalled, just about all gm's seem to have this issue ( faulty stepper motor's ) find it hard to belive that gm will not recall this issue when the parts will only be $15.00 to repair for the safety of there customers nor will they sell you the stepper motors to fix the issue yourself. i feel unsafe in my car that has low mileage that has been well taken care of. please recommend a recall for the cluster so that gm will have to be responsible for its products and customers safety. i used to think that buy an american car would do good things for our country however now think that american companys could care less about its fellow american's there safety and standing behind the product they sold ... *tr

Defective speedometer. speedometer frequently looses calibration at low and high speeds causing a misreading of vehicle speed. *tr
04/15/2008803351
2005 chevrolet impala. failing speedometer. this failure has been intermittent for over 1 year. the first time i experienced it i was driving on a 4 lane divided highway and due to the slow failure of the speedometer i was passing everyone thinking they were driving slow. when the speedometer dropped to zero i realized that there was something wrong with my car not the other drivers. the problem disappeared after i got home and shut the car off. it has since then intermittently reappeared. i have not taken corrective action on this problem because the car is out of warranty and i cannot afford the estimated repair cost. research into a less expensive repair solution has show me that this is a common failure with gm vehicles using a particular stepper motor in their instrument cluster. one online source states this part number as x c5 168 . seems to me that it will only be a matter of time before someone without the knowledge, money or resources to recognize this problem and correct it has a serious injury or causes a death due to excessive speed. older drivers and younger drivers come to mind as the most susceptible. *tr

The speedometer just stopped working, the day before it was fine. i know alot of people who have impalas and their speedometers don't work either. this is not safe driving not knowing how fast your going. i have kids and i travel alot so i think chevy should re-call this soon. *tr

Speedometer is not working. with all the complaints about instrument panels in gm vehicles, you would think it is time for a recall. i believe they recalled suv's, so why not recall cars. from what i understand, my speedometer is just the beginning of my instrument problems on the impala that i purchased. this could be a dangerous problem if a temp gauge is not working properly. *tr
04/20/2006380001
The speedometer on my 05 impala didn't work properly. it would at times stop working, and others, not read the correct speed. the speedo jut stopped working properly. it would do that all the time, especially when it would get damp or humid out. i checked and gm did nothing to recall it. i had to pay $300 to replace the instrument cluster. this is a very common problem with impalas. gm won't recall it or anything. it can't be safe driving a car and not having any idea how fast you're going. i really think gm should be pressured not recalling this. *tr

About two years ago my speedometer quit working. i would be driving and it would register 100 mph when i was not going but about 30 mph. around the same time my horn quit working. when i honked it, it would sound faint until it just quit. also, when i try to put my car in gear it is really hard to at times. when it does finally go into gear it makes a really loud thud noise. now i have a leak in my radiator that has been gradually getting bigger. i bought this car because it was supposed to be the safest. now i'm not so sure. *tr

The speedometer on the vehicle does not work, and it has almost cost me to get a ticket, since i don't know how fast i am going. they is a pending settlement, but that does not help me. the speedometer said that i was going 20mph, and when i was pulled over, i was told that i was going 67mph in a 45mph zone. this has been going on with the vehicle for the past 2 months, and don't have the money to take it to the dealer to get it fixed. *tr

The gauge cluster went about 2 years ago. the temps was reading hot when it was not and the speed would say 100mph when i would be going 50mph. i spent over $100 to see if there was a problem with the radiator turns out there was not. i got it replaced and within a year it was messed up again. i have read hundreds of complaints for the same problem! *tr

2005 impala 3.4l 55k miles at 41k my speedometer, and temp gauges no longer work ... it is due to bad stepper motors. and gm wants over 400 dollars to fix a problem they know is wayyyyyyyyyy too common and i as well as many people cant afford to fix their problem. this is very unsafe not knowing if your car is overheating could result in fire and death and speedometer not working could also lead to bad things! *tr

Digital instrument cluster speedometer and fuel level gauge, speedometer goes past 120mph while driving and continues climbing until the engine is shut off, fuel gauge does the same goes past full when less than full. the problem is not constant but occurs mostly in damp or rainy weather. i have found that both can be reset simply by turning the ignition key on and off until which every instrument is acting up goes back to zero. it 's more of a nuisance than any thing. *tr

I have intermittent problems with the speedometer malfunctioning. i cannot predict when the malfunction will occur. the speedometer will read 20 mph when i am driving with the flow of highway traffic. sometimes turning off the engine and restarting it will solve the problem, but not always. i see many people complaining about this same problem with the same gm model but no recall has been issues. it is imperative that a driver know how fast he is driving. *tr

Driving down paved road headlights will go out sometimes they will come back on and sometimes they won't. i also have reported my speedometer showing 80 or 90 mph when i am driving at normal speeds and 40 or 50 mph when completely stopped - sometimes it will not work at all. vehicle has not been repaired due to the cost involved. also have had a problem with my power steering pump and a wheel hub. hub replaced and paid out of pocket and it did not correct the problem. paid $600 to replace the hub. had to replace the tires because of that defect. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the following day after the vehicle was purchased, the speedometer stopped working. a cluster was repaired and a new steering column was installed at the cost of $465. after the cluster was replaced, the speedometer began to work. while driving between 55-70 mph, the vehicle began making a whining sound. the whining sound could also be heard while driving at speeds between 35-45 mph. on four occasions, the vehicle would not defrost and heat up at temperatures between 45-59 degrees. the dealer stated that nothing could be done. on three different occasions, the vehicle stalled. while parked at a gas station and twice when attempting to start the vehicle, it eventually restarted. the dealer initially stated that the failure could be due to the ignition or the starter. the contact found a nail in a tire and went to a tire shop. she was informed that all four of the tires had cracks on the edge of the tread and were dry rotted. the current mileage was 65,480 and failure mileage was 64,480.

Speedometer in 2005 chevy impala sticks. you are going 35mph and the speedometer will read 85 to 90 mph. called gm customer service. they told me i had to get a $80 diagnostics check on the car from a dealer, before they will tell me if they can give me a discount to fix the problem. the mechanic gave me a verbal estimate of $500 to replace the cluster. i can not afford to pay this. this is a serious problem. these clusters in chevy impalas should be recalled. *tr

Speedometer began losing speed, i.e. began dropping , with cruise control on. no loss of road speed noted, dis-engaged cruise control and continued with flow of traffic. speedometer continued to fall eventually reaching 0 mph. speedometer began working again after shutting vehicle off. currently it will be very slow getting to 0 mph when vehicle is fully stopped. very erratic operation overall. contacted gm customer care, they said it sounds like a bad speedometer stepper motor. informed that it is not under any recall. currently not repaired due to high cost of replacement. note: vehicle is a 2005 chevy impala, out of warranty due to mileage (58,000). *tr
