I am the original owner of a 68k miles 2005 chevy impala. the car was parked at my place of employment for the 8 hrs. my work hours ended and i started the car to proceed home. i pressed the sunroof switch to make it automatically open. it did not open. smoke started to fill the passenger compartment and i noticed a flicker coming from the headliner. it was a flame. i tapped the headliner to make it go out and exited the car and removed my keys from the ignition upon exiting. *tr

I'm not sure what this would be classified under but here's the description. the gauges go haywire, i.e. the speedometer just keeps going up even if you slow down - until it goes almost all the way around again. it normally stops at the bottom like at the 200 degree position if on a 360 degree view. this has been happening on my car since around the 30k mileage. starting just last week [march 2012], now the temperature gauge is starting to do the same thing. it started running hot, [but not really] so i immediately shut down my car, called my mechanic, etc. the temp gauge also went all the way around and sometimes stays there, sometimes it comes back around to normal. upon restarting the car, the temp gauge would start coming back down in segments - turning the ignition switch on/off would make the gauges come back down to normal in notches or spaced increments. now i'm running my car without knowing the proper speed and also not sure if my car is really overheating or not.

2005 chevy impala. first had an electrical problem with the abs brake system. traction control feature would engage whenever the brake was applied. this occurred at 30,000 miles. dealer warranted this. at about 80,000 miles the display panel indicated erroneous problems, ie. truck open when not. the lights would flash off and on indicating all kinds of issues when none existed. also the speedometer began to work erratically. the speedometer would indicate speeds of 30-60 mph higher than actual driving speed. turning the car off/on would gradually lower and reset the speedometer. this occurs randomly with no real pattern. seems to be electrical in nature. also could present a safety issue.
08/10/201187000
The speedometer has gone haywire. you cannot tell how fast you are going. the rpm gauge is going haywire as well. it jumps all over the place. took the car to the dealership but wouldnt you know it the warranty expired with no written notice from warranty company. the clusters are the root of all the problems and chevrolet needs to recall to repair the issues described. another alarming problem with the 2005 chevy impala i own is what is called the passlock protection. it also does not work at times and i had to find out ways to bypass the passlock on youtube. this could turn into a dangerous situation if you need to start you car in an emergency and you cant because the passlock will not let you turn on the car. sometimes you have to wait ten minutes with the key in a certain position. that is totally not acceptable.

Since i brought my 2005 chevrolet impala in 2006, i have always have the same problem with my passlock system. one minute my car is driving fine. i park it go where i need to go and then come back to my car to leave and it won't start. i took it to the dealership in 2006 and they said it was an electrical problem and claimed that they fixed it. however since then it has happen to me repeatedly. according to the owner manual it says leave the key in the ignition at the on position and wait until the security light is no longer flashing. once it stops, turn the key to the off position and start the car. this never works for me. sometimes the flashing light continue for the whole day, and my car is just stuck where ever the incident (security light flashing) occurs.

Car: 2005 chevrolet impala, v6 3100 engine the horn in the car began having intermittent problems with functionality. it is unknown how this began except that the sound of the horn became somewhat strange to start. over time the horn failed completely. the result of this failure is a rather big safety issue given the need of the horn to warn other drives and pedestrians of your presence when they are unaware. we nearly got into three accidents (two in parking lots, one on road) as a result of our inability to honk at drivers to let them know we were there. i am a handyman/mechanic type and replaced the defective horn and added a custom water shield to prevent water from corroding the horn. there is a tsb about this issue. i believe a recall is necessary. service bulletin number : 4043 nhtsa item number : 10020089

I purchased this car used with 59,000 miles. drove it home, parked it for 2 days and the car would not start. returned to dealer who replaced the battery and indicated the drain while off was with specs. took car home and worked well for about 3 days. on the fourth day the car would not start again. searched the web and found this is a very common issue with this car.

Speedometer not working properly. sporadically changes to 100mph+ while driving any speed. safety issue. gm customer assistance gave a big run-around. i had them and a dealership service manager on the phone together. gm cust. asst. said that they would have to know the cause of the problem before they would say if they would cover repairs. service manager said that there are only two possible problems. cust asst still would not say if they would repair. this is a serious safety issue. i guess someone will have to plow through some elementary school kids sincetheyi don't know how fast they are going in a school zone before they issue a recall.

All three of the guages in my 05 impala have malfunctioned. i have no way of knowing how much fuel is in the car, the temp of the engine, and at times the speed of the car. my research suggests a faulty stepper motor used by gm. while i can live with the fuel guage malfunction and the temperature guage malfunction, the speedometer malfunctioning presents a safety issue. when it acts up the guage will indicate a speed that is obviously errant, leaving me guessing as to my actual speed.

2005 impala, failed instrument panel. like the other 65+ complaints, my instrument panel began failing at 75,000 miles. at first, could reset with key to acc numerous times, no longer works. unplug battery resets, but at any time starts again. it seems especially bad in cold weather. when speedometer does work, jumps from 20-40-60 mph with no change in actual speed of vehicle, or drops to 0. cost is over $500 from shadetree mechanic, $800 dealership, with no vehicle for days. now, at 90,000 the temp gauge is gone too, constantly straight down, 400+ degrees, but vehicle not running hot. am starting to fill gas tank even when not necessary, should be the next gauge to fail in the cluster. unacceptable that there is no recourse for the consumer for what a $10 part, which is why it failed in the first place. my guess is, it isn't a pricey enough car to rate a repair.

The speedometer on my 2005 chevrolet impala ls stopped working and now the needle points straight down. there is no way for me to judge my speed which is very dangerous for me and other motorists. after researching this situation there seems to be a defect in a part called a cluster which is a dealer item and is very costly to repair, therefore my car has yet to be repaired. this bad cluster has also caused other system problems, gauges, heater, and traction control problems because apparently this part controls a lot of different systems. someone needs to make gm recall this cluster and do the right thing by replacing these parts and repairing these dangerous cars.

 1. my fuel gauge quit working as i was driving to work. all the other gauges kept working. the needle was pointing down and would move at the bottom when the vehicle was turned on and off. i spent 400.00 to replace the instrument cluster which appears to be a problem as listed on the complaints section. 2. i purchased a 2005 chev impala 01/2006 with15,00 miles on it. i started to notice a bit of a hard shifting on take off, only after driving it in the city after about the 2nd year of driving. the problem never left, in fact it has gotten worse over the years that we have owned the car. the problem with my car is the transmission shifts hard and only seems to do it if you did a a lot of start and stopping and you could turn the car off and let it sit for 10 min. or so then it won't do it again. sometimes it would go for several days or weeks before it would happen again or will do it several times in a row. when i had the instrument cluster replaced i had them check for codes and found a p1811.

I own a 2005 chevy impala and for the last year my speedometer has failed on several occasions. the speedometer will jump without warning leading to unsafe traveling conditions especially while traveling on highways. cycling the ignition will temporarily fix the issue but this has become a hassle. when i started to research the issue on the internet i found hundreds of complaints on the same issue. i also found where there was a class action law suit that forced the repair of the same problem on other vehicles for the same model year range. why do we as consumers have to pay for and fix the problem when it is an obvious defect in manufacturing? why didn
08/15/201066000
First issue took place on a clear sunny day at highway speed. the speedometer at frist seemd to stick as it moved up and down instead of moving normally. the speedometer jumps to extremes in speed, either substantially higher or substantially lower than actual. once the issue started, it has remained a problem. after looking into the issue, it appears this is a fairly common complaint for gm vehicles, specifically with model years 2000 - 2006. the car in questin is a 2005 impala. the current recommended fix by gm seems to be to replace the instrument panel which can cost upwards of 700 dollars.

Speedometer, gas guage, tachometer, stopped working @ 41,000 miles. tach works once in a great while. this is very dangerous as you can't tell how fast you are traveling, and you have no idea how much gas you have until the gas warning indicator comes on. this problem was not corrected yet.

My chevy impala gauge cluster began to work inappropriately in july 2007. it started with the speedometer, i was driving to work and thought that i was going 55mph but was really going 77mph. i got a ticket and three days later the needle stopped working. two months later the temp needle and fuel needle stopped working. i continued to drive the car because the dealership where i purchased the car had closed and there was not a chevy dealership in the area. in april, 2010, my entire dash stopped working, including the message center.

I bought 2005 impala ss with 83,000 miles and soon after my speedometer started showing the wrong speed. i thought i was going 55 when i was pulled over for doing 77. now the needle just hangs straight down,so i started relying on my tach to guess my speed. then about 1 month later my tachometer started messing up and now it just stays between 1,500 and 2,000 rpms so i have no idea how fast or slow i'm going. now my gas gauge has messed up it showed i had 3/4 of a tank when my car quit, i thought it was some major problem till my friend talked me into putting some gas in and it started right up. now i have no idea how fast i'm going or how much gas i have. this doesn't seem right with only 85,000 miles on my car. i have seen several complaints on the impala instrument clusters so why doesn't chevrolet do something about it? is it the money it would cost, or the money they would lose with all of us having to replace them with another faulty cluster? *tr

About 1 1/2 yrs ago i bought a 2005 impala, within 4 mths my speedometer, gas gauge & rpm gauge all started acting up. my gas gauge goes way past the full line and never comes back down, the speedometer will say i am doing over 200 km when i may be doing 50 km, the only way i have found to fix this is by letting the car cool off for about ten minutes and then turn the key off and on until it drops the speedometer back down to zero, and my rpm gauge will drop to under zero while driving. this happens mostly during cold weather, but has been known to happen while highway driving during the rest of the year. i have been in contact with the rcmp and they feel this is a disaster waiting to happen. i have been in contact with the company and have only been told that i may get a discount on having the part in question replaced...i was told by one dealership it was a cluster problem in the dash and the part alone is $600 not including labor. i have to travel 6 hrs a month atleast for doctors appointments and the safety issue makes me very nervous on the drives to and from my doctor appointments as i do not know how fast i am going on the curves, down hills, or on icy patches on the secondary roads i have to take to my appointments. i know there are other people who have had the same issue from the complaints on the internet. the first time this happened i was december 2008 and since then has happened numerous times. *tr

The speedometer is constantly inconsistent. sitting at a stoplight it reads 40?120? 75? i never know what speed im doing. i just go with the flow of traffic, and once again it reads something like 90mph. sometimes it is even pointing straight down. this has got to be a safety issue right?? i would like a response. how do i go about getting this problem fixed? i have found many complaints about this problem on the internet. this happens at all times, your form does not allow me to tell you this in the speed at which this occurs only allows me to put numbers. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet impala and the speedometer is not working properly. i've checked nhtsa complaints and find over and over this same complaint but was told by a chevrolet dealership this was not a recall. with the number of complaints filed this should be a recall by chevrolet instead of making the consumer pay for the repairs. in light of recent toyota recalls i would think chevrolet would take similar action for this defect in their automobiles. *tr

On an almost continuous basis, my 2005 chevrolet impala is incapable of reporting accurate speed and gas level.. 9 out of 10 times, i have to guess how much gas i have in the tank, and how fast i am going. at least with the speedometer i can see what it reads at a stop and subtract that amount and get close to actual speed. *tr

On my grandfathers 2005 chevrolet impala the gauge cluster stops working. it first started with the water temp gauge. and now the speedometer works intermittently. its definitely a safety issue because you don't know how fast your going. and after typing the problem into google.com their are other owners of impalas who have the same problem. the car only has 51k miles on it. im currently looking online for a reasonable gauge cluster so i can replace it. i feel a recall is in order since this isn't a localized problem. thank you for your time. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy impala. the speedometer will quit working and either drops to zero or shows a slower speed than what you are traveling. in addition the temperature gauge will also show a lesser temperature than what is normally shown. this is a problem that has going on since 2007. i have tried to get this repaired but the technicians say they have an issue isolating the problem. *tr

2005 chevrolet impala instrument cluster failure. speedometer works intermittently and temp gauge stopped working all together. unsure if fuel gauge is accurate. will gm repay me if i am issued a speeding ticket? unsure if engine is operating at safe operating temperature or if engine damage is occurring due to inoperative gauge. please recommend quickly to general motors to either recall these defective clusters or add this vehicle to the letter of understanding they issued for the suv and trucks with the same problem.*tr

In july, 2009, i noticed that my temperature gauge on my 2005 impala was not working. i took it to the chevrolet dealer who told me the instrument cluster would need to be replaced and it would affect my mileage. it was a cost prohibitive issue, so i elected just to keep an eye on my radiator and coolant. in september, my fuel gauge quit working, and since that time, i've had to gauge when fuel was low by clocking my mileage. now, as of today, my speedometer has failed, and this is a problem. i have no way of knowing how fast i'm going. i've checked several sites online, and this seems to be a common issue with the chevrolet impalas, and one that is a safety issue with regard to speed. despite the numerous complaints, there has been no recall on the cluster. how would a person go about trying to get a recall issued? *tr

05/01/2008830001
Ongoing problem i hear from chevy bout this, the speedometer clusters continually fail, speedometer intermittently works, or doesn't work t all, speed sensor is functioning properly, just speedometer reads anywhere from 0 to 100, hangs up anywhere in between, when stopped can show any speed , or when moving may show 0 and not work at all, also temp gauge does not register engine temp anymore , so you have no idea when engine is overheating ,both problems can cause dangerous situations from inaccurate speeds to overheating engine which could cause a fire, i have been told from gm employees that they are aware of these problems and will not do anything to correct their defect, online you will find many many clusters for sale to replace bad ones , but they are out of other crashed impalas, and the dealer will charge way to much to correct their defect. looks like when this causes a death then it will get someone's attention, speed kills especially depending on weather and road conditions, gauges are equipment to help us judge what we do safely, when they don't work then we put everyone in harms way. *tr

2005 impala bought in 96 w/25k miles. after 1 year car had 37k miles and started exhibiting crazy performance on the display gauges. sometimes the gas indicator would reflect an empty gas tank though it was nearly full. the speedometer would reflect 35 miles while the car was stopped and other speeds when in motion. the temperature gauge would tack way over to the right indicating excessive temperatures. i tried to get this fixed but the problem was intermittent and could not be duplicated when taken to the shop. i have been told the entire instrument cluster was known for these issues. now that i've had the car a few more years the crazy markings are more frequent. the biggest concern is the temperature gauge because i can not tell when i have a real problem. i took it to a chevy dealer and after a number of calls to the corp office by the dealer, gm would not do anything about this other than charge me almost $800. what irks me is that there is a recall for this on gm trucks but not on cars. shouldn't that be a clue? i'll go back to nissan as soon as i can. *tr

I have a 2005 impala ss, the vehicle has starting problems which began at 8,000 miles. if the car sits more than two days without being driven the battery goes dead. there is a serious electrical drain on the battery. i took the car to the dealers service department on several occasions, they tell me that they can find anything wrong. at one point they kept the car for a week, then told me that i must be doing something wrong because they can find anything wrong with the vehicle. the car now has 17,000 miles, and i continue to still have the electrical drain. i have had to purchase two new batteries since owning the car. i have to carry a portable power source in the trunk, to jump start the vehicle. this is not right and should not be happening. the electrical problem should have been solved by now. i have been a loyal chevy owner for fifty years, and this is the way i'm rewarded. the manufacturer and the dealer still have not learned that professional customer service is paramount. i may never buy another gm car. *tr

( cruise control would just shut off and work periodically.) it was really just an adjustment on the brake sensor switch that needed adjustment. had to take car back for the adjustment to brake pedal sensor. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy impala with 45,200 mile on it and from day one i have had a electrical problem of some sort every time i am driving all my lights will go out, even all my panel lights inside. i have to flick my brights on and off so they will come back on. some times this happens two or three times a week. i have had it back to the chevy dealers twice and they say there is nothing wrong. what do i do? thank you. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving between 5-25 mph, the speedometer and the temperature gauges moved up and down. the contact took the vehicle to a personal mechanic and was informed that the failure caused the vehicle to need coolant. he feels that the vehicle is unsafe because the thermostat rises due to the vehicle overheating and the speedometer failing. the current mileage was 68,000 and failure mileage was 64,000.

This past summer in june, the speedometer would read 40-80 mph when stopped/idle. problem subsided after a few weeks. more recently, within the last 2 weeks, my speedometer in my 2005 impala would gradually go down gradually during long distance travel (100mi+) on the i-10. to me, this is a very dangerous issue with the car. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet impala with the v-6 3800 engine has developed a problem where the speedometer has ceased to work properly. it either does not register any speed at all or it fails to return to zero when the car is stopped. in doing some research online there are numerous postings on edmonds.com regarding this defect. i have not been able to find any recall notices for this defect from general motors. it is my opinion that this defect poses a serious safety concern because motorists like myself are unable to determine accurately the speed at which the vehicle is being operated. this poses a variety of potential dangers to the motorists operating the vehicle with the defective speedometers, other motorists on the roadways, pedestrians, and first responders at traffic accidents. *tr

The speedometer reading on our 2005 chevrolet impala is inaccurate/malfunctioning. sitting still at the stop light it reads 100 mph and other times 30 mph pulling out of the driveway it reads 70 mph and at other times it points straight down at the neutral indicator with no reading at all. our vehicle has 76200 miles on it and he contacted the local dealership which in turn told us that gm would pay for the problem on vehicles with less than 80000 because it was so common but general motors headquarters said since they were filling bankruptcy they would not pay for it and we were on our own. the local dealership said they could fix the problem for 500.00 to 700.00 dollars which is unacceptable. gm wants a government bailout at their customer

I have a 2005 chevy impala.. for past two weeks my speedometer has been reading incorrectly. i was on the interstate doing 70 mph but it felt more like 50. the problem stopped for a couple of days but yesterday.. it took another turn. i was doing 35mph but the reading showed 0mph. it is now pointing in the up and down position and will not move. i have checked other forums and found that there are many many other impala owners experiencing the same problem. this seems to me to be a factory default. there is a major possibility for serious accidents occurring due to this problem . *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet impala with approx. 86,000 miles on it. my speedometer is going haywire(not consistent at all) and i am unable to correctly tell my speed. i know there are quite a bit of other gm vehicles with the same issue because there is a blog on the internet about them. i am concerned about this due to the fact that i have a 3 year old son and my wife with me a lot. gm said they will not pay for this problem to be fixed and a lot of people can not afford it($500-$800). i just hope gm will take responsibility and fix this issue at free of charge to the consumer before someone gets injured or even killed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. sporadically, the speedometer on the instrument control panel becomes inoperative and displays inaccurate readings. as a consequence, the contact cannot accurately measure the speed she is driving. there is also a strong fuel odor emanating from the vehicle. she took the vehicle to a repair shop, but the failure could not be duplicated or remedied. the vehicle has not been properly repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 116,000.

Temperature gage is working only part time, will increase abruptly and then degree just as fast. last week the speedometer continued to increase past the numbers then decreased slowly throughout the day. i filled up with gas and the speedometer started working again but the temperature gage floated back and forth. this week the speedometer is on 90 when the car is off. filled up with gas again hoping it would correct the speedometer again. instead the speedometer dropped to the n position at the bottom and will move to 120 occasionally. took the car to repair shop, had the sensor checked. sensor is fine. was told many have had this problem and is a defect with the cluster that gm will not recognize. this problem needs to be addressed. this is a real safety issue. *tr

The speedometer gets stuck you will be on the highway doing 65 and when you get off to stop it will say that you are going 65 while you are sitting still or it will not move at all it will say 0 while driving this is a instrument cluster issue and will be around $500.00 to fix but i do not have the money for this before this started the gas gage and temp gage started to mess up and bounce around. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the speedometer was malfunctioning and would not register the correct speed. while driving approximately 30 mph, the speedometer would register 70-80 mph. most recently, while driving at 45 mph, the speedometer registered more than 120 mph, which was off the meter. the dealer advised her to bring in the vehicle so the instrument cluster could be replaced. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 75,545 and failure mileage was approximately 74,600.

My speedometer is reading 100 mph when i'm only going 40 - 50. when i come to a complete stop, the speedometer may move to 60. it's taken up to 3 - 4 days to move back down to the 0. then the same process will start all over again. the car also tends to drive sluggish when this is happening. could it be the speedometer or transmission??? i've been told to replace the cluster in the dash but will that prevent the sluggishness also? *tr

1 week ago speedometer started malfunctioning reading at 120 while driving and went down to 60 at a stop. after 2 days went back down to 0 and the next day returned to 60 at rest and up to 120+ while driving. this makes it very difficult to accurately gauge your speed especially through school zones of 20-30 miles an hour and is unsafe. contacted dealer and would cost $300 + for the part only. this seems to be a common issue and needs to be recalled. it was recalled on suv's 2003-2005 why not cars of the same years? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. while driving at an unknown speed, the contact glanced at the heat gauge, which read 260 degrees. she pulled over, shut off, and restarted the vehicle; however, the heat gauge still indicated 260 degrees. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic for repair and they offered to repair the cluster. the contact did not have the repairs done because she did not know the mechanic that well. the mechanic informed her that the cooling system was working properly. she took the vehicle home and scheduled an appointment with her mechanic. her mechanic stated that everything was fine with the vehicle and no repairs were made. currently, the speedometer in the vehicle has failed and the contact is not sure if her fuel gauge is working properly. the failure mileage was 42,250 and current mileage was 42,500.

2005 chevrolet impala caught fire under the hood in an accident. consumer states that when the car first caught fire the vehicle stayed in drive and would not go into park and ignition would not turn off causing the vehicle to feed fuel to the fire. *kb the driver of the impala was involved in a moderately low speed front end collision with the rear of another vehicle. according to the fire report, the fire a cap was missing from the fuel return on top of the engine which would have spewed gasoline as long as the engine was running.*jb

Traction control system failed on my vehicle. the failure turned off my anti-lock brake system and my traction control system at two inopportune times. this failure has twice in the past few months. it first occurred at the end of december during a snow storm. the second failure occurred a few weeks ago while driving through a rain and hail storm. both times the vehicle was taken to the dealership to be fixed. the dealer replaced a faulty speed sensor. my car is about a year old and two speed sensor have already failed. i'm upset at the fact that we purchased the car based on its safety features and twice now they have failed, as i mentioned earlier, at the most inopportune moments, where we were relying heavily on said safety features. *nm

I have a 2005 chevy impala, currently with 22,320 miles. at my oil change and tire rotation, (~20,500) i was informed by repair place that they would not perform the tire rotation as i would be needing to replace the tires soon. i asked why they were wearing so fast- i was told, they noticed it on many impalas- premature tire wear between 18,000-25,000 miles. ~ 15 months ago, with only about 13,000 miles, when i had an oil change done i was informed me the engine was leaking oil from the rear of the engine, i should take it to the dealer for repair. the dealer had to replace (under warranty) several seals/gaskets- oil pan, drain plug, oil filter, plus replace the drain plug. the car is sometimes hard to start and have to hold the key in the start position, and/or lightly press the gas pedal to start it. about two weeks ago, i grinded the starter. sometimes the car will start roughly and immediately stall, or will stall the first few seconds as i am backing out the drive way. dealer about this they told me i was using cheap gas and to use a better brand, but i always use brand gas, i even use fuel injector cleaner dealer later told me i needed to have the fuel injection flushed with their system for $199, plus tax and charges, hearing it was not good for the vehicle, i declined. i have also noticed a clunking/bumping/banging noise when turning, especially hard turns. my brakes need to be replaced, the front brakes are starting to make a thump when braking, and yesterday when braking hard, i heard a squeal noise, (rear?). fuel gauge sometimes rapidly fluctuates, when driving, and at times when accelerating,(though not concurrent) i hear a swoosh/gargling sound. i was accelerating too hard. the fuel gauge will swing as much as a 1/4 tank when driving before recovering to the correct position. gauge shows low fuel level, low fuel light comes on, i only needed 10-12 gals to fill it (~16 gals). *tr
