My chevy impala began shaking when i attempt to slow down on the freeway from speeds of 55-65 miles an hour. i have replaced the tires, brakes, and balanced, aligned, rotated and the shaking has not stopped. this is very dangerous when you need to come to a quick stop because when your car shakes like it's falling apart your first instinct is to let go of the brake. i have researched this problem and have come to discover this is a common problem with chevrolet impala's. i can not afford to keep dumping money into a temporoary solution.

3.4ltr 6cyl base model has had multiple defective sensations for some time now; among those are steering, transmission shifting from a standing stop, braking and odd noises. this vehicle's 5 y/o with only 20k mi, owned by elders & used locally, i've been driving them, & now i have this car. the left outter tie rod end had to be replaced with less than 20k mi. the steering still has an unstable feel when turning and make a metal to metal clinking noise from a defective (& as told by my mechanic & nhtsa reports, repeatedly reported) intermediate steering shaft. there should be a total recall because of this defective gm engineering problem. there is also a clinking noise occasionally when accelerating from a standing stop; can not tell if this defect is from the steering or something else like the engine mounts. have not yet discovered this source. from a standing stop, the transmission will occasionally shift abruptly, either from a neutral disposition into 1st gear or from 1st to 2nd gear; the car lurches forward & the occupants heads are whipped back. this is similar to other reports of defective power train functionality i've read about with this model. braking, when just starting a trip, has an improper feel and sometimes sounds like it's grinding, as if the brake pads or rotors are cracked/worn; this is a sensation i've had with vehicles having 100,000 miles, not on a car like this with only 20k miles. the center arm rest's pad support is flimsy/cheap plastic & has broken simply upon entering & shifting in the seat. i now see why so many police departments have discontinued the impala's in favor of the charger's, crown vic's, taurus's and escapes. the us government should be severely fining gm for marketing this car. >>>this car needs to be recalled for many reasons<<<

Driving to work approx 06:30 am. power steering went out, managed to turn the car towards ditch to avoid oncoming vehicles. approx 45 mph, two lane frontage road. the car has always been rather weavy on the highway. the dealer couldn't find anything wrong until the recall for steering linkage was pointed out. even after that, the car handled poorly and was reported to dealer. (steered poorly) reported to dealer, nothing done until after accident. power steering pump replaced, but dealer refused admission of fault. billed us for accident damage and replacement of powersteering pump. *tr

My vehicle, a 2005 chevy impala, has had an issue concerning my fuel pressure regulator. after taking my vehicle to the chevy dealership to find out what the issue was, the diagnostics test had discovered that the fuel pressure regulator was damaged. i did further research on the issue they discovered i have come to find out that there was a recall on the same exact part on march 12 of 2007. when i returned to pick up my vehicle, they also mentioned another issue about my vehicles steering. this also showed up on the list of recalls for my model/year vehicle. when i asked regarding the issue of why my car was not involved in the recall, they stated that my vin number is not in the list of cars they felt should be recalled. i was concerned and wondering why would my vehicle not be recalled also when the same exact issued occurred on my vehicle as well. *tr

Speedometer said i was doing 87 mph when car was shut off and in park. took car to dealer, had instrument cluster replaced. also had them check pop in the steering( made noise when i bought it from dealer with less than 31,000 miles on it. dealer replaced instrument panel cluster, steering shaft and cruise control sensor. ( cruise control would just shut off and work periodically.) it was really just an adjustment on the brake sensor switch that needed adjustment. had to take car back for the adjustment to brake pedal sensor. *tr

2005 impala popping sound made in steering wheel when turning vehicle. after consulting with mechanic he stated it could be a problem that could cause my steering to fail while driving. after performing research online it appears this is a common problem with the initial design of the vehicle's steering lubrication system. this could be a potential safety concern if the steering fails while in motion and the driver is unable to steer the car. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy impala, currently with 22,320 miles. at my oil change and tire rotation, (~20,500) i was informed by repair place that they would not perform the tire rotation as i would be needing to replace the tires soon. i asked why they were wearing so fast- i was told, they noticed it on many impalas- premature tire wear between 18,000-25,000 miles. ~ 15 months ago, with only about 13,000 miles, when i had an oil change done i was informed me the engine was leaking oil from the rear of the engine, i should take it to the dealer for repair. the dealer had to replace (under warranty) several seals/gaskets- oil pan, drain plug, oil filter, plus replace the drain plug. the car is sometimes hard to start and have to hold the key in the start position, and/or lightly press the gas pedal to start it. about two weeks ago, i grinded the starter. sometimes the car will start roughly and immediately stall, or will stall the first few seconds as i am backing out the drive way. dealer about this they told me i was using cheap gas and to use a better brand, but i always use brand gas, i even use fuel injector cleaner dealer later told me i needed to have the fuel injection flushed with their system for $199, plus tax and charges, hearing it was not good for the vehicle, i declined. i have also noticed a clunking/bumping/banging noise when turning, especially hard turns. my brakes need to be replaced, the front brakes are starting to make a thump when braking, and yesterday when braking hard, i heard a squeal noise, (rear?). fuel gauge sometimes rapidly fluctuates, when driving, and at times when accelerating,(though not concurrent) i hear a swoosh/gargling sound. i was accelerating too hard. the fuel gauge will swing as much as a 1/4 tank when driving before recovering to the correct position. gauge shows low fuel level, low fuel light comes on, i only needed 10-12 gals to fill it (~16 gals). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet impala. the following day after the vehicle was purchased, the speedometer stopped working. a cluster was repaired and a new steering column was installed at the cost of $465. after the cluster was replaced, the speedometer began to work. while driving between 55-70 mph, the vehicle began making a whining sound. the whining sound could also be heard while driving at speeds between 35-45 mph. on four occasions, the vehicle would not defrost and heat up at temperatures between 45-59 degrees. the dealer stated that nothing could be done. on three different occasions, the vehicle stalled. while parked at a gas station and twice when attempting to start the vehicle, it eventually restarted. the dealer initially stated that the failure could be due to the ignition or the starter. the contact found a nail in a tire and went to a tire shop. she was informed that all four of the tires had cracks on the edge of the tread and were dry rotted. the current mileage was 65,480 and failure mileage was 64,480.

There was a loud clunking noise whenever i made a hard turn in my car - both left and right, as well as a feeling that the steering column was loose. also, the right front tire would move by touch. i took it to the dealership and was told that the steering column would need to be replaced and i would have to have new tie rods because they were loose. i was also told by the dealer that this was a common problem with the impala. why has a recall not be instituted if the dealer is repairing more than one instance of this problem per week? *tr

Started to notice rumbling and clicking noises as well as vibrations in the steering wheel as i made slow turns. called the local chevrolet service department and he knew exactly what was wrong from my description. he says it is a known issue with the upper intermediate steering shaft on several chevy products, including my 2005 chevy impala with 50,000 miles on it. it is so common the repair part is on national backorder. i am going to get a repair bill of around $240. i feel this should be a national recall due to the known issue by chevy. it is not right now due to the fact it is not considered a safety issue, yet. i understand parts going bad and do not expect the manufacturer to guarantee nothing will ever happen. but, when there is a know defect, why should i left holding the $240 bill??? the manufacturer should have this as a recall and should reimburse customers accordingly. *tr
