Rear tires had excessive wear on the inside of the tire to the point that the thread and wires were showing. replaced all four tires and wheel alignment. in july 2012 had tires and shocks replaced for the same issue. big knots were also on the tires and car shook when going at a low speed. was told that rear suspension was misaligned and that rear shocks would fix the problem. march 2013 tires four tires replaced and wheel alignment again. was told that camber bolts were needed to fix this problem. contacted gm in july 2012 about the problem and rep states that there was no recall for this vehicle only the police models. this is unfair for consumers to have to keep buying tires. vehicle currently has 88560 miles.

Premature tires wear on the inside tread of the rear wheels. this is causing steering issues at high speed. not noticeable until rear tires are rotated to front, then there is a shake. there is a pending lawsuit for this occurrence on the 07 and 08 impalas. apparently the rear spindles are to blame due to poor design. *tr

We are getting ready to have to replace our third set of tires. we bought our impala new and replaced our first set of tires at feb. 2010 (38,000 miles). replaced again at 54,000 miles dec. 2011. replaced again at 65,000 nov. of 2012 and it is in need ot new rear tires again at 72,000. car shakes and back end slides in bad weather. service department states that it needs a cambor kit. research has shown that chevrolet produced a faulty suspension rod and recalled police owned vehicles but not consumer vehicles. do not feel safe in vehicle or allowing my 16 year old to drive it. my car is aligned and tires rotated and serviced frequently! tires wear down to metal sticking out of tires and inner wear is incredible. left tire behind the driver is the quickest to have problems and begin to cause car to shake. secondly, rear door automatic door locks quite working after 2 years of owning car. how do i become part of the class action law suit. *tr

We purchased the car new from grand prize chevrolet. at about 8000 miles i noticed uneven wear on the front tires and called the dealer. i was told that the warranty only covered wheel alignment for the first 6000 miles. accordingly, i took the car to tire kingdom, a tire dealer, and had the car aligned. at 20,000 miles i again noticed uneven wear in the tires and took the car back to tire kingdom. they aligned it again and said it was ok. it wasn't. at about 35,000 miles it was aligned again by tire kingdom and i put in new tires. the store manager, [xxx] told me he had done the alignment himself and that all was within specs. at 52000 miles one of the tires failed. it was all worn on the inside edge where i had not noticed the uneven wear. i then took the vehicle to maroone chevrolet who told me they could not align the car without the installation of what they call a camber kit because my 2008 impala had no other way of having the camber adjusted. in summary: my 2008 impala was misaligned when i purchased it and 52000 miles later is still misaligned because the manufacturer failed to include camber adjustment in the design. neither the manufacturer or the dealer accepts responsibility for this defect, have not issued a recall and will not fix the problem unless we pay their blackmail. however, according to reports on the internet, a recall for this very same problem was issued by the manufacturer for police vehicles. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tire's started wearing on the inside edge and no other place was told we needed new tires also a 4 wheel alingment we replaced tires on the front and mved old tires to the rear. looking at the rear of the car you can actualy see the tires leaning in at the top and tires have started to show wear in less 1,000 miles all the reasearch i have done say's this is a common problem gm will not do anything and will not admit that there is a problem i have put 1 set of tires and not the cheap kind gm used plus the last time i just replaced the front tires and put the older ones on the rear and have had car alingined 3 times

Car began to drive different so thought i needed an alignment. took the car to the dealer i bought it from only to be told i needed new tires. at 30000 miles i thought this was absurd. a month later later i had a flat tire in the rear only to see that the tire had wires sticking out of the tire with a hole almost completely through the tire. had to spend money for all new tires and they are already starting to show problems after just a few thousand miles. i am single, retired and live paycheck to paycheck. i'm not a fat cat from general motors who can't seem to make a decision that yes, there is a problem with this model and year chevy. when people start dying because of this problem, possibly then you will decide to do something about this.

I purchased a 2008 impala on january 14, 2012 and the inner tires on the rear were worn almost to the metal cord. i slid off the road on february 26, 2012. when i took the car to the repair shop the front left wheel bearing was loose and also the outer tire rod on the front left was also loose. the auto repair specialist informed me that the suspension on the impala is a common concern. i was also informed that gm recalled the 2008 impala but only the police cars.

New tires installed january 2011 with proper rotation every 6000-7500 miles. inside tread of rear tires are prematurely wearing. i drive mostly highway miles to and from work, about 150 miles a day round trip. i have to have new tires installed again today as inside tread is wearing and belts are starting to show. i have seen many consumer reports and claims regarding the rear spindles as being bad. i was not able to locate any recalls on this matter but kept locating the class action lawsuit for the rear spindles of the impala i cannot afford to have to put new tires on the car every year let alone 2 or more times a year. after looking into the repair cost of replacing the rear spindles is pretty expensive, especially for the consumer to take on when it appears gm should recall for the cars for the fix as they did for the police departments

When the tires needed replacing on the car, i spent $1100.00 on a set of premium tires, after 10,000 miles i noticed a roaring sound from the tires. i took the car to the tire dealer. he said the problem was with the alignment of the vehicle, causing the tires to wear uneven, i had the tires rotated every 5,000 miles, i took the car straight to my chevy. dealer. i was told the struts would have to be ground off and the car realigned and the cost would be mine. i worry about this kind of repair when you alter the part by mis-shaping the part. the cost to me was $197.00 after hearing about other owners with the problem. i worry about taking road trips with my vehicle. i think that gm should be held liable and the proper fix done to the vehicles for the safety of the car owners. i like the car fine, except for the worry of our safety while on the road.

I had been complaining to my husband that the car's rearend has poor stability and it's hard to maintain it during rain and snow and ice. when we went to have it inspected this week, we were informed that it could not pass as the rear tires were bald on the inside. as it turns out, there have been repeated problems with this car, and a recall was done only on the police models? are you kidding me? what about the average person driving this car???? we are not as important. obviously there is a problem and now i have to get new tires (that only have about 10,000 miles on them) at my freaking expense and i will need to have the suspension fixed. someone needs to get a general recall done for this model car....we are just as important as the cops....wth

Vehicle had been pulling to the right. it also needed oil change also so took it to local chevrolet dealer, alexandria motors. the service tech informed me i needed to replace tires since they were worn to the tread. they would not cover it under warranty so i took it to an independent repair shop and was informed this was a frequent (normal?) occurrence on these vehicles due to factory defects. i paid the $581.12 for tires and repair due to the faulty alignment from factory. i was not aware of extensive involvement until i did a google search recently. i did keep the receipts, etc and have had no subsequent problems with the vehicle now having over 40,000 miles on it.

Had several tires wear out prematurely on the impala in the first year and have had to pay for constant alignments ever since. isn't there a law suit regarding this issue?
06/09/201027190
Rear tires were worn out due to known defect in rear linkage had to pay $69.95 for a wheel alignment and $180.72 for two new tires. alignment was probably not neccessary since original problem was in the rear linkage, i feel i should be reimbursed for tires and alignment.
07/11/201135313
My 2008 chevrolet impala required alignment of all 4 wheels after 35000 miles of use which is not unusual. however, the rear wheels required a special process wherein bolts had to be punched out and shimming was required to allow proper alignment. this effort doubled my cost from $89.00 to $178.00. the problem is obviously a manufacturing defect. the general motors problems and complaints department has failed to respond to my complaint which was submitted july 11th, 2011.

2008 chevrolet impala is very unstable on snpw or ice covered roads. the rear end tends to swerve back and forth when it incounters even the slightest amount of ice or snow. i have over thirty years driving in michigan winters and i have never had a car so unstable in these conditions. i have a 2002 chevy venture and a 97 bonneville that i drove in the same conditions (same road and time for comparison) and they both felt solid even at higher speeds. i have noticed similar complaints in internet forums. i had the tires inspected by a tire dealer and he said that the tires are original equipment and that they had adequate tread. this should be investaged.

I purchased my 2008 impala with 28k miles in march 2009-certified used. i had to replace the tires within the first 6 months of ownership ( i was told that gm uses cheap tires. from the outside the tread was fine and it appeared to be in good shap but when it was on the lift the told me they all had metal showing.i paid this car off and gave it to my son in april 2010- he has since changed all 4 tires back tires 3 times.we had them rotated and aligned twice, that is when it was discovered that the tires had worn on the inside again. there is no way to know unless it is on a lift.my son took the impala to the dealer service yesterday and purchased his 2 tires- it was agreed by service manager that if we took the car there and bought tires from universal that he would put them on, do an alignment and most important install the camber bolt kit at no extra charge. this was also told to chevy by (the service manager) when they called him. i didn

The chevy impala seems to be a fine vehicle in for normal, everyday driving. in emergency situations, though, it's handling becomes very unpredictable. i had a car pull out in front of me yesterday, causing me to brake hard. the antilock brakes seemed to work fine, however, the rear end of the car slewed out into another lane even though there was no lockup of the wheels - the car should have tracked straight - i was traveling in a straight ahead manner. this is not the first time i've had the car react in this manner. i did a little research on the car's handling - i noted consumer report's understated summary of the car having unsettled handling.

I purchased 2008 chevy impala with 22000 miles on it at norman frede in clear lake/houston area. after 6months they suggested tire rotation was needed and due after rotation i noticed car shaking between 20 to 30mph and above 65mph i took it in and it was aligned and i was charged 2months later still shaking was realigned at no charge but before that i had a nail in one of back tires and i had it repaired by a tire shop and they were shocked to see my 4 tires were worn and they showed me, i was so upset i took car in again and theysaid because i had 36,000 miles on it was the reason. well i took it in again and they told me strut needed to be repaired that's why my tires were all worn and wanted to charge me $150 to repair strut and $400 plus for tires and i said no why should i have to pay i hadn't even had the car for a year and this was happening, i was upset and left but before i left they realigned it again and in my service ticket they did not even mention the strut repair. i tried to contact the service manager by email and the general manager, i returned the serv mgr call twice but kept missing her and the gen mgr never called or emailed me. i feel that this is a certified car and i should not have to drive like this or pay for any repairs. please what can i do. *tr

I got this 2008 impala in nov.2007. it has a vibration that starts about 37mph through 47mph. and at 75mph it is worst. the dealer rebalanced the tires, i went back and the tires were rebalanced again. service manager told me that they all have this vibration. i called chevrolet motor division, talked to 3 different people, the last person said they were not going to change the tires, and it was normal of that car. this is not normal for any car. this car 2,300 miles on it. i want this fixed, and i'm stuck with it. *tr

Purchased 2008 impala ss factory demo car with 3000 miles and at 15000 miles a rear tire blew out at 65 miles an hour and almost wrecked us. rear tires were wore out on inside. down to the cord which at 15000 miles seemed impossible. replaced tires and dealer said alignment was not the problem but was normal for the model car and now at 23000 miles rear tires are wore out again on inside and front tires are the original and still look new. why can't the dealer repair the problem instead of selling tires every 10000 miles? i think they just want the extra cash flow during this time the economy is slow .

I own a 2008 chevy impala and have had extensive work don on the car to reapir the alignment of my rear tires. i first noticed the issue when after roughly 7000 miles i took my car in to have the tires rotated and i was informed that my rear tires had the steel belts showing. this was a shock because i had purchased 80000 mile tires. i then took my car to my local mechanic who fixed the problem to the best of his ability and this plus the cost of the tire ran me roughly 1000 dollars. prior to me getting the car in to the shop i had noticed extremly poor handling in the snow, bassicly it felt as if the rear of the car was constantly slidding out.

My family was traveling to a funeral driving a 2008 impala at 75mph. tires were properly inflated and visually checked for wear by general observation.tires appeared to have plenty of tread and no cupping. left rear tire detonated sending tire tread/belts/debris into wheel well area. this ripped fuel filler assembly loose and sent it below car where it trailed with no remaining fuel cap and frayed sensor wires exposed. car was brought to a safe stop beside interstate. when trying to make temporary repairs it was noticed that opposite rear tire had wear down to steel belts on inside two inches. the remaining tire appeared almost new from exterior view. it was replaced along with blown tire as this tire was just as deadly. repair by insurance exceeded $4,000. contacted chevrolet dealer where vehicle was purchased and have not received a response. i believe this is a potentially deadly service issue that needs to be addressed so that repairs to rear suspension can be made. most people are driving around totally unaware that their tires only appear safe. unless the car is put on a lift rack the wear issue is not obvious to the average automobile owner.

Previously filed complaint in 10/2009 gm offered $1000 voucher for the problem. turned vehicle into dealer in sept 2009. told gm that i would make payments until jan 2010 and to provide a solution to making our 2008 impala safe to transport my family. they refused to address the problem and the car sat at dealers until may 2010 when a collection company called my home and i tolld them the story. they asked where the car was and i told them. they put me on hold and called the dealer to confirm. that day they went and picked up the vehicle and started sending collection notices. i told them car was unsafe to drive. they sold at auction and sent me to a collection agency for the balance of $9700. the car resold to an unsuspecting customer in nh. gm is still trying to collect the balance and has offered a compromise $4800. these vehicles have killed unsuspecting comsumers but documentation does not exist?? i am sure if a study was done on all highway /accidents/deaths connected to 2007 & 2008 impalas, rear tire wear would be well represented. gm should smell the coffee and recall these dangerous vehilces. it appears to be a specific frame run and not every chevy and buick frame manufaxctured in those years. all police vehicles have been recalled and retrofitted to correct the rear alignment issue please help protect american consumers and force gm to make this problem right!

Purchased vehicle used june 2010, noted after buying rear tires were 2 different tires, & different from front tires. purchased 2 matching tires to present front tires, goodyear eagle p225/55 r17. put front tires on rear, new on front. noted significant inside wear both rear tires, may 2011. have put on approximately 15,000 miles in this time. i drive approximately 53 miles every workday. read article in paper, july 6th 2011 by dee-ann durbin associated press, describing lawsuit over this issue, defective spindle rods, replaced on 23,800 police vehicles by gm, not on rest of 2007-2008 impala's. believe recall should be inforced for all citizen's fairly, by gm, obviously their is a problem, or gm would not have replaced part for police cruiser's.

Rear tire tread on 2008 impala ss have worn & been replaced twice, only 33400 miles on car. spindle rods are defective and its unsafe to drive because tires could blow out and people could be injured badly. manufacturer did a recall for all police impala but did nothing for the consumer.

I have a 2008 impala, with 38,000 miles. i have had to replace my rear tires last year due to excessive inside wear. i just noticed few days ago that this same excessive wear has happened again and it looks worse than the first time. this issue is forcing me to spend another $200 on tires and worry about my safety. i read an artical that the 2008 impalas have defective spindle rods, which connect the suspension to the rear wheels. the defect causes the wheels to misalign, which makes the tires wear out faster. the tires could also wear out unevenly, increasing the risk of a blowout. gm has corrected this issue on the impalas driven by the police dept but has not done anything to the consumer. this issue needs to be adddressed and a recall issued by gm asap, for the safety of all involved.

I have a 2008 chevrolet impala. i purchased 4 new tires for the vehicle. within a few months, i noticed that both rear tires had a strip approximately 2 to 3 inches wide worn completely bald. the strip was on the inside of the tire, moving towards the center of the tire. the wear strip was so bad that the tires were useless and needed to be replaced. this defect was not a tire issue, nor a driver issue. the vehicle is driven by adults.

I have experience rapid tread wear on the inside of my rear tires. last set of rear tires were worn down to the steel after approx. 18.000 miles. current set of rear tires have approx. 12,000 miles on them and are showing significant wear on the inside. a day ago i was driving on a rain covered interstate early in the morning. the rear end of the car swung out to the left and i lost control and spun around 2 times ending up in the grassy median. luckily, no one else was near me when this happened and no damage was done to the vehicle. currently, i am trying to get gm to repair the problem which i believe is the same problem that the 2007-2008 police vehicles were recalled for.

We have a 2008 impala, we had to have new rear tires at 24,000 miles and realigned. my tires were so bad it almost did not pass inspection. that is how i found out about the tires being bad. and now i hear that others are having the same problem. i have the before and after measurements.

I am experiencing excessive inside tire wear on my rear tires and apparently it is a common problem with 2008 impalas. i spoke with customer service obviously not in this country, and was told i would have to pay to inspect my car. i then spoke to a service manager who denied any known problems. he then let it slip that a modification of the struts was necessary to achieve proper alignment of the rear and that gm would not cover it. they will however repair police impalas at no charge. i declined to pay only to be told i would have to cover the cost of repair anyway, kind of like adding insult to injury. when will action be taken to prevent accidents due to blow outs; which apparently have occurred? not everyone looks under their car to inspect the tires and this wear is not visible otherwise. customer service was not fazed in the least that i might buy elseware, her comment that is your choice ,so much for service.

Purchased new 2008 impala, had to replace tires at 35000. always rotated and balanced and kept proper pressures. now at 56000 and am being told by chevy 1800.00 to repair rear alignment. car is driven 99% on the interstate. again need new tires whats up??? chevy denies any problems but the web is full of issues surrounding this. is there no other recourse????

Had to replace rear driver's tire at 17,000 miles due to wear down to the metal. took the vehicle into the dealer to check wheel alignment and found the rear so misaligned that the adjustment struts had to be elongated. spoke with gm customer service rep and was told this was not a warranty issue.

I own a 2008 chevy impala which i had new tires installed. i also had an alignment done. at my first tire rotation (6000 miles) i was told of excessive wear on the inside of the rear tires. the wear is very obvious. the tires are a 60,000 mile tire(uniroyal) after contacting the place that aligned my wheels.(ase certified) they did some investigating during which they found gm recalled police package) vehicles with vin#s falling in a specified range. which my car also falls in this range. they had defective spindle rods in them, however as a consumer and not a police vehicle gm tells me i am responsible for having the proper work done to have my car fixed. upon searching myself i have found numerous consumer complaints regarding premature tire wear on these vehicles. i see this as a considerable safety concern that the manufacturer should be held accountable for regardless of wether it is a civilian or police vehicle.

On 2008 chevy impala, the insides of all four tires were worn to the cord. the tires had been rotated regularly. the car was returned to the dealer who claimed the tires had not been rotated and that he had never heard of any defect.. we printed information from this website showing that this problem had been reporterd several times. the dealer still denied any defect even though one of the workers said he had replaced tires with the same problem.

2008 chevy impala was shipped from the factory unaligned causing premature tire wear. there may be a camber related issue causing premature wear on the inner edge of the rear tires. problems start at about 10,000 miles. i replaced the rear tires twice in one year. *tr

Started having issues with my 2008 chevy impala with what i thought was a tire balance problem. did required tire rotation as recommended at 6000, 10,000 and then again at 13,500. dealer said tires may be out of round and suggested road force balancing at 16,500 miles. this did not change the issue, so went to goodyear dealer and found out that the inside 2 inches of all four tires were wearing excessively with the rear two less that 2/32 inches of tread left. goodyear shot the alignment and showed that the alignment was way off and tires could not be warranted with an alignment issue. took back to chevy dealer to inform them of the alignment issue. they said alignment was not warranted after 7,500 miles and also would not replace the 4 tires. i did get the dealer to gratuitously do a 4 wheel alignment that also showed the camber and toe, especially in the rear was out of tolerance and exceeded cross-tolerance on their machine as well. the camber could not be adjusted without extra work (elongating the bolt holes or a chamber alignment kit). contacted gm complaint line for resolution to no avail, saying i had to prove that there is a defect on the vehicle. this is an inherent safety problem with 2007 and 2008 impalas that has fostered numerous complaint to you including 5 already this year. gm issued a tsb #08032 for police impalas that are on the same platform and suspension, but never extended that to the public. seems to me that the rear suspension has an severe defect that can cause tire blowout without warning. no tires should wear like that with less than 17,000 miles without a rear suspension and alignment problem that needs to be recalled for repair and replacement of the parts and tires. i saw at least 12 complaints in the first 24 pages of 2007 impala complaints to the odi. please investigate this problem before someone is seriously injured or killed as a result of this continuing impala issue. *tr

During any damp, wet or snowy roadway conditions, my 2008 chevy impala ss handles dangerously poor. this occurs even if the car is put into neutral driving down the road. the rear-end keeps wanting to go sideways. i took it to a chevy/gm certified dealer and they said that there was no problem with it. *tr

My 08 impala ss has been going through tires excessively. i replaced the back tires almost 4 months ago and new tires are needed again. the rear tires are wearing on the insides of the tires. i brought this to the attention of my local gm dealer who assured me that nothing is wrong with the rear suspension and that i need to rotate the tires every 6000 miles that was what was wrong that i wasn't following the owners manual. so i thought it really was my fault so i spent the $500 to buy two new tires and now almost 4 months later the same thing is happening. i have only put about 6000 miles on the new tires and the cords are already showing on the insides of the rear tires. *tr

Gm issued a letter to 2007 and 2008 impala police vehicle owners concerning a condition that leads to rear wheel misalignment, resulting in excessive wear to the inboard side of the tires. my 2008 impala ss is exhibits the same problem, but gm will only fix police vehicles. my complaint is that the problem effects more that just the police vehicles because the rear suspensions and setups are identical. gm should fix any impala experience the alignment issues because they were never right to begin with. *tr
