Tl* the contact owns a 1998 chevrolet k1500. while driving 10 mph when the brakes engaged, the contact stated the brake pedal was resistant and failed to engage. he had to apply extreme force to the brake pedal in order for them to engage, increasing stopping distance and time. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 82,000. updated 06/17/10.*lj

My 1998 chevrolet silverado k1500 had a total front brake rotor failure in which the hub of the rotor detached from the rotor itself, resulting in a total loss of braking on the front right side. this was the factory rotor. any stops resulted in pulling to the left, heavy braking caused extreme moving of the vehicle to the left. i repaired by replacing the rotors and brake pads on the front.

Brakes on my 1998 k1500 pulsate and then go to the floor when coming to a stop. dealership supposedly replaced abs module once for free then charged me two hundred dollars to replace it again. replaced pads, shoes, calipers etc. brakes still do this, have came close to hitting things in front of me due to this. from reading other articles on the net i am told by unhooking the abs it will stop doing this but then i will have no abs. whats the point in having a new truck when the rear end will lock up just like it does in my 1982 ford truck with no abs.

I had read numerous peoples complaint on this issue. there apparently should be a recall on this problem. i have a 98 chevy silverado ext. cab 4x4 and i'm having a problem with low speed(5-10mph) where the abs comes on and slowly and dangerously stops the vehicle. i realize that the wheel speed sensors are the problem, but if there is recall for 99-up with the same problem, why doesn't anyone fix this? this is a constant problem and gets worse when cold or rainy out, winter is coming and do not want to have this same problem, please advise. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 chevrolet k1500. while driving approximately 10 mph, the anti-lock system automatically engaged. as a result, the vehicle had little to no braking ability. the contact stated that a vehicle with no brakes is a huge safety issue. he took the vehicle to the dealer and was advised to clean out the wheel speed sensors for the anti-lock brake. this improved the braking system, but it still did not work properly. he took the vehicle back to the dealer after finding nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:anti-lock) for the same failure he was experiencing. the dealer stated that the recall did not include his vehicle and they were not responsible for the repairs. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 55,000 and current mileage was 64,000. updated 10/03/08 *bf updated 10/07/08. *jb

Safety recall 05068 - front wheel speed sensor corrosion. nhtsa campaign number: 05v-379. i own a 1998 chevrolet silverado with the unwanted abs activation, exactly as detailed in the recall notice dated august 29, 2005. i had to unhook the abs function to alleviate the problem, but now i have no abs at all, as i was told that i would have to replace the abs module which is very expensive. how can i get my 1998 vehicle problem corrected by the dealer, as part of this recall? thank you.*jb

I noticed in an edition of the minneapolis star-tribune and noticed the recall of the 1999-2002 model years of the chevrolet silverado pick-ups with the anti-lock brake system with the abs engaging at speeds of 4 to 11 mph and have been experiencing the same problem with my 1998 chevrolet silverado pick-up truck. would my truck be eligible for this recall or not??

Abs speed sensor has corroded. gm did not warn me of potential corrosion or that the vehicle may have problems with uncontrolled stopping. gm also did not plan a maintenance check up on the abs sensor, which could have prevented problems. during the short life of the vehicle this part was gradually becoming defective. this part under normal circumstances should last the life of the vehicle, since it is in a protected and sealed area that requires major mechanical work. i took my vehicle to the point of purchase, don mccue chevrolet where i have majority of all work done. they fail to understand that they are not the only mechanics in town. they are using this fact for the purpose of denial of any responsibility. i spoke with dennis briner the service manager at don mccue about this problem, and he stated after some arguing that this area of the vehicle is not considered regular maintenance with brake jobs or any other maintenance check up. they offered $130.00 to clean the corrosion but later refused, due too the fact they may break the sensor. my feeling is, is that this was a developing problem over the short life of the vehicle and should be covered by gm. i spoke with gm corporate directly and they responded that i failed to keep regular maintenance records. but when i asked where in their records do they show a regular maintenance schedule for abs speed sensors they said there isn't one. gm hasn't been able to provide me with an owner's manual that proves them right. the solution was to pull the abs fuse by direction of a don mccue service tech. and gm offered to give me a gm loyalty certificate once i get the work done. *ak

When road conditions are wet, the rear brakes on my truck lock-up as the vehicle is coming to a stop. this is a dangerous condition, as it interferes with my ability to control the vehicle during wet conditions. additionally, when i accelarate from the stop, the rear breaks release with a loud clunking sound. the problem has occurred in the past after going through a car wash, however, the problem did not persist since the wheather conditions at those times were dry. in the last incident, however, the problem persisted since the wheather was rainy and the roads were wet. i am very concerned regarding this problem. *ak

The anti-lock brakes engage often when braking. i saw an article in our mpls. star tribune newspaper which someone wrote in with a similar problem, same year vehicle, and said we should contact you for investigation. the brakes basically engage even on dry pavement, moving at slow speeds. we think that these brakes should only be engaging when you are having to stop suddenly and are concerned this may be more of a problem later on. we do have approx 120,000 miles on the vehicle but this has been a problem for a long time now. we were told by a mechanic that his pickup does the same thing and this year is noted for that problem. no need to fix it. i just wanted you to be aware of something we are seeing that we feel is not quite right.*ak
