PARKING BRAKE
EA04011GENERAL MOTORS CORP.04/09/200405/10/2005PARKING BRAKE FAILURE05V161000
In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. a total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed. for additional information, see the attached closing report.
PE03057GENERAL MOTORS CORP.12/08/200304/09/2004PARKING BRAKE FAILURE
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

I purchased a 2002 z71 chevrolet crewcab 4 w/d pickup truck from hendrick chevrolet in september of 2004, and have had my transmission (1st, 3rd and reverse) go out twice in less than a year. i contacted gm, but there was no recall at that time, but there were a lot of complaints on the nhtsa site about this same problem on my model truck. the first time it went out of may of 2005, it happened again february of this year. i had to pay $1,400 to have it fixed in may 2005, but the place of business who fixed it, fixed it again at no cost, as he said he guarantees his work for a year, and since it had not been a full year, he didn't charge me...you might say i was unlucky and lucky at the same time. i believe there is a serious problem with that particular model pickup. *nm

When traveling at a low rate of speed and attempting to brake the abs brake system engages and does not allow me to stop when necessary. this happens every time i try to stop at a low rate of speed. this was corrected once by recall number 05v379000, however the problem has not been permanently fixed and we are in danger every time we drive the vehicle. *tr

Spongy brakes, no brakes at times. last incident feb. 1, 2006 while backing in drive. pushed on brake and pedal went to floor. a loud rattling, hammering noise came from vehicle and no braking felt. i have complained about this since i bought the truck in 2003 at 22586 miles. the master cylinder was rebuilt about april 23, 2004 and it didn't help; in fact we about lost all braking going home from dealer. i phoned the dealer and he ordered a new master cylinder. it was replaced may 3, 2004 but the pedal was still spongy and braking very poor. when stopped and engine running you can push the brake pedal clear to the floor. i have been told this is normal. well, normal almost caused a wreck on a down hill t road with my wife with me. i phoned chevrolet customer assistance center (file 1-212176923) for help. a waste of time. i phoned chevrolet motor division (1800-222-1020) and all they suggested was to take the truck back to the dealer, a 30 mile drive one way. they didn't help in four other visits . i did take it back on jan. 6, 2006 for a brake recall on wheel detectors but it didn't help the braking a bit. thanks. *nm

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado truck. the truck only has 28,000 miles on it and recently began making grinding noises. i took it to century chevrolet and was told that all 4 rotors and pads need to be replaced. with only 38,000 miles on the truck that seemed crazy. when i questioned this they told me that they hardly ever see this brake problem happening and it's because i don't drive the truck enough so it's rusted out the parts. rusty parts in colorado is another thing that didn't make sense. they could only do the front brake repair because of my camper so they replaced the front rotors and pads for a little over $400. i started checking around about the brakes and discovered on the internet that there were many similar stories from other silverado owners. there is a large number of people who own these vehicles with parts that just deteriorate. chevrolet continues to deny that it's defective parts and instead tells people that it's their fault for not using the brakes enough. we use this truck mostly in the summer for camping and traveling but do drive it in the winter so i?m unsure what is considered the proper amount of ?braking? time. the dealer couldn?t give me an answer on that question. this is happening to a lot of other people and they should be warned that part of the maintenance on this vehicle is $1,000 brake job every $25,000 miles or you won't have any brakes. thank you for your time. *tr

I had a problem with my left side drivers door window. i lowered it at a mcdonald's drive thru window, and it made a grinding sound and would not hardly roll up. i took my hand and helped it up into place. i paid for the repair at a local repair shop out of my own pocket. the cable on the window regulator was bad. i had to get a new one from c&o motors ( chevrolet dealer) and cross lanes tire and auto repair shop made the repairs for me.
