I have replaced my tail light bulbs numerous times as well now the entire bulb panel once on each side. the design and the seal allows for water to enter and hold water in the covering/reflectors which in turn cause rusting and blown bulbs. at this point i now need a whole new wiring harness due to the water damage on the passenger side as well as another new bulb panel. i have many friends whom also have the same cars who can not keep tail lights working either. i notice as i drive around many, many others on the road have no visable lights i would have to guess for the same reason. i am pulled over by the police frequently for this as well. i have not been issued a citiation yet as i have a spoiler , rear window, and both break lights that are working. this is definatly a design problem and have been told this by many mechanics over the years. this should be corrected to potentially reduce accidents due to lack of rear lights and owners not knowing they have gone out or being unable to repair. the seals are poor and hold bowls of water constantly in the covers. i often see the problem in the passanger side as well as mine. unsure if this in common or just my observation.

The turn signals started working intermittent, then quit. this was a recall a couple of years ago, and it was related to the hazard warning switch. my car was taken to the dealership and the switch was replaced. unfortunately, this is a repeat and was not covered under the recall. the switches are still going bad and not covered. my instrument panel was destroyed internally when my switch was replaced and this damage was discovered during the last replacement in which i replaced the switch on my own since it was not covered. *tr

I own a 2000 chevy malibu and i owned it since 2007 july...since then i have had problems with my hazard lights and signal lights...when i would be driving my car i would use my signal to turn left or right and it would make a crackle sound and stop working completley i would then try to use my hazard they would do the same thing make a crackle sound and not work..also with my headlights my problem with them is they work when they want to and when they do work they stay on even when my car is completely off am talking keys out of the engine and everything i would have to pop my hood and move around the fuses till the car lights finally turn off..i have taken my car into the dealership were i bought my car and all they did was give me a hardtime told me there was nothing wrong with my car and that my vin# is not on the recall list...but there is a recall on 2000 chevy malibu about there hazardlights signal lights and headlights not only that the nhtsa dose not say anything about specific vin# for the recalls it jus says that this is recalls on 2000 chevy malibu. *tr

I purchased this car used in march of 2006. upon purchasing the vehicle, i found that the turn signal only worked intermittently. i also noticed that the hazard switch did not function at all. over time i have found that when the heat is on that the turn signals fail to work without shifting the hazard switch around, and when the cold air is on that it works decently. gm issued recall 03043 (nhtsa campaign 03v327000) for over 670,000 malibus, aleros, and grand ams in 2000-2001. however, upon visiting the dealership they stated that my 2000 malibu was not covered by the recall. in looking over the vehicle history we found that the hazard switch had been replaced while under warranty by the first own (which implies it was faulty), and the new one is at least dysfunctional as the first. even though the problem and its cause is evident, the dealership fails to remedy the issue. several mechanics have diagnosed the problem to be exactly what is described in the recall. the dealership has only offered me the chance to call their customer service center to see if they can help me. due to the faulty hazard switch, i am unable to signal when making lane changes or turning. i am unable to use my hazard switch in case of emergency, or when my car has to be stopped on the side of the road or interstate. *tr

I have a 2000 chevy malibu with a faulty hazard switch. as per gm my car does not have any recalls based on my vin#. the cost for the part is under $30 but the cost for labor at the chevy dealer is more than $200 for a total of almost $300. i have since replaced this part myself and my turn signals and hazard's are in working order. i paid the $30 for the part and it took me less that 6 minutes to replace. now since i'm someone who knows his way around a car, it upsets me that a dealership would charge that much. since the part for the recall fixed my problem and gm says it had no recalls i would like them to pay me for the repair of the problem. they have stated in the past that if they found that this would become a recall issue they would reimburse me for the repair. it's only fair since they would charge me in the first place to make the repair since in their system my car does not need any recalls. i could see them charging for an hour of labor, parts and tax. but that would be about $100. please let me know what you find out. thanks. *tr

A faulty hazard switch causes the turn signals to intermittently stop working at the most in opportune time. on one occasion it almost resulted in a serious accident. the switch was replaced for the same reason by the dealership on april 15, 2002. it is now malfunctioning again only much more frequently than before. i see that there is a recall for this issue on 2000/2001 malibu owners(id number 03v327000) but the dealership states that my vin number does not show up in the recall. he also claims that since the part was already replaced once it would not be covered again. i searched the web and noticed that owners of 2002 malibus are also complaining of the same problem. so, it is not just an isolated issue. since i never use the hazard switch it can't possibly have gone bad because of wear and tear. nor is it a part that would be used frequently enough to wear out. there is obviously a serious safety defect with the part. *jb

I have already filed complaint in regards to the hazard light recall, which for some reason does not cover my 2000 malibu. i noticed other complaints on the malibu and figured i would throw my two cents in. i to have had to drop over $1000 dollars into the most defective car i have purchased this includes the $200 piece of junks i bought when i was a teenager. my list of problems. 1. coolant system leak cost $700 note: mechanic laughed and said this happens all the time is this type of engine. in reviewing other complaints, the one really stands out. nice i am glad gm owns up to its problems. 2. brakes constantly need to be replaced well below mileage. glad gm saved a few bucks under sizing the rotors. 3. within a year the fans switch (levels 1,2) and lighter stopped working. boy gm is saving lots money now. 4. within the past year i had fuel pump failure, nothing like traveling in rush hour traffic doing 75mph and car totally dieing. boy gm has made one quality car. 5. the last insult, my first and likely last gm product is when i thought boy i finally get something from gm in regards to one small defect, the hazard switch, i find out that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. wow not only i am out at least $1000 bucks on piece of crap product, gm does not even want to give a bone to hungry man. with this type of product it is no wonder gm is losing market share faster than any other automotive company. keep up the good work gm. clearly the are some serious defects with this vehicle and the gm

My wife's 2000 chevrolet malibu started having an issue where her blinkers were intermittent. i found out that there was a recall for this problem for her model year and model, but when i called gm, i was told that her vin was not part of the recall. this was despite the fact that it did have the same exact problem of intermittent blinker activity. (recall 03v327000) so i went to my local dealership, paid the $30 for a new hazard switch (part num: 22594146), came home, took the bezel off her dash, replaced the switch, and the problem was fixed. there has been no problem since. i believe that gm should open the recall to include a greater amount of vehicles with this problem. i would at least like to get refunded for buying the new part, and i have the old part of that is needed.*ak

04/14/200356000103/29/2003
The turn signals on my 2000 chevrolet malibu have operated intermittently since shortly after i purchased the car used in march of 2003. the turn signals and the hazard lights become completely inoperative at random times while driving. sometimes they will be inoperative for a few seconds, and sometimes it can be hours. overall i would estimate that the turn signals only function about 50% of the time. when the turn signals are not functioning it is extremely difficult and stressful to maneuver through heavy traffic. i have often times upset other drivers after switching lanes without having a functioning turn signal. when the problem first started to occur (more than a year ago) i returned the car to the dealership and told them of the problem. the mechanics checked the turn signal bulbs, and after finding no problems told me that it was probably a loose bulb so it should be fixed. the next day the problem continued, and so i returned to the dealer. this time they took the car into the shop to check it over more carefully. after a day in the shop i was told that they did not find any problems and that during a test drive the blinkers operating correctly. i took the car home, and as usual the turn signals continued to work intermittently. after having to deal with this problem for over a year now, i believe the problem is in the hazard switch (mounted in the dash). often times when the turn signals (and hazards) quit working i can press the hazard switch several times and eventually they will beginning functioning again. i have also found that on warm and humid days, the turn signals will not work at all until the air conditioning has thoroughly cooled and lowered the humidity of the interior of the car. in the near future i plan on trading the car in (and passing on the problem to someone else) for a different vehicle (not a chevrolet) that will most likely have turn signals that operate 100% of the time. *jb

We unfortunately own a 2000 chevy malibu. we have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. we have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728.00. the air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. the turn signals are nonfunctional and our vin number is not included in the recall although it should be. then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around 800.00 to fix. the newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100.00 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. after looking over your site i found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. i feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 malibu's. please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it. *jb

This vehicle was purchased by an individual for my son as a first car. low miles and low price. when we recieved the title we found out that it was a salvage vehicle. my son being the teenager he was just excited to have four wheels never mentioned to us that the turn signals worked intermittingly. when we purchased another vehicle for my son for graduation, i started to drive the 2000 chevy malibu and noticed the turn signals doing this. then i noticed the hazards were doing the same intermittingly working. i made an appointment at the chevy house to get the problem fix and at the time from a friend found out about a factory recall for cars of this make and model with the same problem. when i went in they searched using the vin # and said they could not help. approximately 1 hour later i called the cheverolet company. at first they gave me a number and a code for a special policy complaint. then after 25 minutes of my time he informed me that nothing could be done to fix the vehicle because it was a salvage vehicle. this is a factory defect. it had nothing to do with the vehicle being a salvage vehicle. if that is the case then why do state departments even allow these vehicles on the road . i just need the turn signals and hazards fixed so no innocent people will be hurt at any point. i can take this vehicle in for a diagnostic test also so it can be tested for this. i need this fix but it shouldn't be at my expense.

The turn signals stop working for no reason.sometimes turning off the engine and restarting it can make them work again or pulling the bottle/can holder out can help. lately the fuel indicater and the a/c will not work when the car is started but may come on 2 or 3 blocks down the road. also the check engine and or the service auto light may come on. the fuses have been checked and do not appear to be damaged but sometimes rotating them will cause the part not working to start working again. i think there may be an electrial problem in the panel behind the fuses to the left of the steering wheel. this problem has been occuring with no apparent pattern except for the use of the bottle/can holder.*ak

I too, have many of the problems that other malibu owners have. my turn signals work intermittently, the brakes have been replaced 2x, in addition to rotors, etc. the battery blew up, but was replaced as was the ac turning off and on by itself. the one issue that is very concerning to me, is one familiar to you. my car cuts off at anytime while driving. it has done this to me on 2 separate occasions. nashville has 3 interstates running through it and i was on them both times this happened. it was very scary and dangerous. it is out of warranty and the shops that i have taken it to cannot replicate the problem. the mechanics at then shops told me that malibu's are by far some of the most troublesome cars on the road today. someone is going to be killed. you lose control and have no steering ability, what does it take to fix the problem. i can see from others that their problems are being ignored as well. when will gm acknowledge the problem. don't they watch the news and see what happened with the firestone recall, or the tobacco companies that kept secrets? it is time for someone to be responsible for their product. *nlm

The brakes don't stop properly. the brakes have been changed 3 times. the rotors have been turned once and changed once. the blinkers don't work 95% of the time and the emergency flashers never work properly. the ac settings change on their own as you are driving the car. this causes the compressor to turn on and off, eventually causing premature compressor failure. the vehicle has died 4 times as we were driving down the road, once almost getting us killed as we were turning in front of a truck. also, the brakes have almost caused us to be in a wreck. we have almost been rear ended because of the turn signal failure. the manufacturer and the dealership has had many times to fix this vehicle with no success. to this point, we have not been involved in a motor vehicle accident. however, is it going to take me or my family being killed to get something done with this vehicle?

Turn indicators would function intermittently. fortunately, i was able to avoid having a serious accident; but, many close calls. in the fall of 2002, i had the vehicle repaired. in 2003 it was brought to my attention that gm was going to have a recall campaign in the 1st quarter of 2004; however, my vin is not in the range of vehicles to be repaired.*ak
