Tl-the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 30-35 mph she turned on the left signal and it began to make a noise but the signal did not working. she stated because of this failure the hazard light does not work. she took the vehicle to a local mechanic shop and they were unable to duplicate the failure. she reference recall 03v327000, exterior lighting:hazard flashing warning lights:switch and was advised by the manufacture that her vehicle was not part of this recall. she stated she also had a problem with the fuel, after she fuel up the vehicle the vehicle hesitate when she engaging the accelerator. the vehicle was taken again to the same local mechanic and they were unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired for the failures. the vehicle was purchased used in 2009. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 84,649. vwb

I have a 2000 chevy malibu. it has something called the passlock system or theft system and it prevents the car from starting. it prevents the car from starting all the time. this isn't the first time you have received this complaint i bet. i have put an extra $2000 into the car after i brought it hoping it would fix it but i still have the problem. i have read on-line and everyone who owns a 96 and up gm car has this problem. everyone says gm doesn't care about this problem and they won't fix it. they say this is the only way to get them to fix it. if we complain on here. please make them fix this problem with their cars because you would save over 1,000,000 people time and frustration. no joke, literally 1,000,000 people have this problem. this is why they went bankrupt. gm sucks. this is why america sucks as a nation. we have to complain on here to fix our problems. no offense to you. i don't have enough money to by another car, as most people with this problem. please do the right thing and make gm fix it. i know it is not the american way to give the people what they want but maybe this time we can make an exception. please help all of us who would love to buy a different car but don't have the money. thank you.

On sept. 29, 2010, i bought a 2000 chev malibu in ny from a nj dealer, the next day i noticed the check engine light on, so i took the car to a mechanic who told me that there was an issue with the gas emissions. i paid him to do a special emissions gas treatment, the check engine light remained on. the same car also has exterior lighting issues (the turn signals sporadically work and suddenly stop without waring and the emergency blinkers won't work either), i submitted this issue in a complaint on this website nhtsa.dot.gov on yesterday oct. 22, 2010. however i am submitting this because it is possibly related to the recall gas tank issues of this make, model and year car.

While we were driving our 2000 chevrolet malibu had a sudden failure of some component in the gasoline storage or delivery system. we smelled gas and saw it being spilled on the road behind us. we pulled over, cut off and exited the car. within 30 seconds of exiting the car, it burst into flames and was completely destroyed by fire. fortunately no one was burned or hurt, but the potential for catastrophic injury was apparent. the vehicle was a total loss. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that she has had to replace the vehicle's fuel filter on several occasions. the first time was shortly after the vehicle was purchased. the most recent fuel filter change was on june 20, 2007 and it now has to be replaced again on july 17, 2007. there is a safety recall on the fuel filter, but she does not know if it applies to her vin. the purchase date and recall number were unknown. the current mileage is 120,000 and failure mileage was 30,000.

I have been having problems with my hazard lights as well as turning signals. they have been replaced since the last recall, but have went out again. i also have been having problems with my fuel line, such as my vehicle not wanting to accelerate, it seems that it idles at a intersection light with the rpm's going up to the 2 or 3 then acting as if it wants to shut off. i had the fuel line replaced not even thirty days after purchasing the vehicle. i purchased the vehicle jan of 2000, and i did see some investigation concerning the fuel line months prior to the purchase. my vehicle stopped on the side of the highway, and my vehicle was towed to a chevorlet dealer outside of lansing near lake odessa. i at that time was not charged for this fuel pump which they did try to charge but because it happened within the thirty days they replaced the fuel pump at no charge. i do see on this site that this vehicle a 2000 chevy malibu has been investigated due to fuel problems so i hoping this was looked into properly and brought to the surface once again because my pump was changed in 2000 and has been giving me problem since 2002. i have had tune-ups, transmission changed, routine oil changes, fuel line cleaned, diagnosis ran, and the results are nothing i'm hoping to get to the bottom of this before taking any documentation to a lawyer concerning a matter that has been brought to the surface but nothing done about it. also i've took this vehicle back to the dealer where it was purchased and they can't find anything wrong with it. the question they ask is whether the check engine light has come on or not. i have all sensors checked out and that not the problem, but my gas leaves fast and i have a hard time accelerating on the residential streets as well as the high way. i also have been having to change the fuses in order for my horn and cigarette lighter to work. so someone please look into this because it's getting worse. thanks for your time and consideration. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated if the gas tank is not kept above half full, the vehicle shuts off completely, and will not start again until at least 5 more gallons of gas is put in the tank. the vehicle has been taken to an independent mechanic, who changed the air and fuel filters. they can not determine the cause of the problem unless the vehicle is brought to the repair shop at the time the incident occurs. this has occurred more than 10 times while driving, and usually at speeds of 60 mph.

I am the owner of a chevrolet malibu. this car is very dangerous and should be recalled. the car will shut off when driving speeds of 55 or more. i have had nothing but problems since i purchased this car. first, it was the intake manifold gasket. second, it was something wrong with the fuel system. third, the car quit on me and my daughter when we were driving on the express way going 60 miles per hour. we could have killed ourselves and someone else. *jb

Intermittently when the brake pedal was applied, the brakes grabbed so hard that the entire vehicle vibrated severely. when this occurred, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. this resulted in extended stopping distance. the brake rotors warped. on one occasion this failure caused lost of control, in which the consumer almost crashed into an 18 wheeler, but was able to pull over to the medium. the dealership has acknowledged that there was a problem with the braking system, but was unable to correct the problem, and was now refusing to work on the vehicle. *ak there was a rattle under the hood at the firewall area while the vehicle was in motion, the hose assembly was found rubbing under the vehicle, both front rotors had wore thin, the fuel pump sender did not hold the correct amount of fuel pressure, there was an open circuit in the 24x crank sensor, there was a rattle in the front suspension due to weak front lower control arms which were noisy (the right lower control arm was replaced), the coolant level sensor shorted, the water pump assembly leaked coolant, there was a vibration at highway speeds, hardware was bad and was loose in the caliper, rotor pulsation which was replaced per bulletin, the turn signal was inoperative, and the a/c had internal damage and would cut on and off. *sc

My 2000 malibu/4dr sedan would stop running while driving down the road. there would be no warning it would just stop. this cause all the power to stop working(steering, brakes). taking the car to a gm dealer shop for repair, they connected the test equipment up and said they found no codes. i instructed them to take the car on a road test, when they did this the car stopped on them also. after researching this problem they found a tech bulletin(ref:replacement of fuel pickup screen and filter). after this repair the car now runs fine. it has 45725 miles at the time of trouble. *nm

Front/rear suspension-squawking noise -gm well aware of this issue hazard lights - have gone out twice. fuel integrity - erratic fuel reading - shows 1/4 tank - when in reality there is no gas. i have ran out of gas approximately 7 times - several times late at night. no cruise control - gm would not repair. brakes pads/rotors - have replaced 3 times. my local dealer rotolo chevrolet and gm customer service would do nothing. it was expensive. premature tire wear - two sets of tires. cars runs hot - would never go on a trip - because it would get too near overheating. i was afraid of getting stranded in the middle of the desert. engine ticking noise - local dealer said this was normal. now, i find none of these things were normal and many, many more car owners have experienced the same type of problems. also, i had a battery that exploded while car was under warranty. it was my problem. dealership would not replace battery. i finally had enough and turned this automobile back to gmac. is it going to take people getting killed to make gm responsible for these issues with the 2000 malibu. all of these problems were reported to the dealer, but since nothing could be duplicated, even though gm was aware of these issues, they would do nothing. after the car was out of warranty, the dealership was more than willing to correct these issues. the problem i have is the deception.....gm is aware of these issues and have been for some time. someone needs to hold then accountable. *jb

I bought my 2000 chevy malibu from rod and ty's all star auto in puyallup, wa on 7/5/05. i bought the extended warranty/repair insurance. i have put over $600 of repairs into my car, only to find out that i need a new fuel pump, which is another $756.26 and the warranty people will only pay $425 for a substandard part. i also have some wires i need to have replaced, the a/c has never worked, even though they told me it did, the cd player destroys my cds and sometimes just won't play them at all, and i have a squeaky sound coming from the steering or suspension on the front end of my car. i paid over $13,000 for this car when it was 5 years old and had 74k miles on it (i got screwed) and now all these problems are coming up on it. the even cr*ppier part is, i still owe $9000 on it and it's only worth $2500 on trade in. what the heck am i supposed to do with this lemon piece of cr*p car? i'm super angry and will never buy another american car ever! by the way, i checked carfax and 11 records came up for this car! should i pay the $19.99 to find out about my car, or is 11 records pretty normal? should i worry?! *nm

Fuel pump needed to be replaced on 2/01/06 - cost of repair $800. when service was completed, gm mechanic informed me that the intake manifold gasket is leaking and causing coolant to mix with oil in the engine. the estimated cost to repair is an additional $1,000! we have not yet had the part repaired due to the cost and the car has had limited use since. gm should issue a recall on this already and stop having the consumers pay for their lack of use of reliable parts!! this is obviously a major problem given the number of complaints listed. *nm

I have already filed complaint in regards to the hazard light recall, which for some reason does not cover my 2000 malibu. i noticed other complaints on the malibu and figured i would throw my two cents in. i to have had to drop over $1000 dollars into the most defective car i have purchased this includes the $200 piece of junks i bought when i was a teenager. my list of problems. 1. coolant system leak cost $700 note: mechanic laughed and said this happens all the time is this type of engine. in reviewing other complaints, the one really stands out. nice i am glad gm owns up to its problems. 2. brakes constantly need to be replaced well below mileage. glad gm saved a few bucks under sizing the rotors. 3. within a year the fans switch (levels 1,2) and lighter stopped working. boy gm is saving lots money now. 4. within the past year i had fuel pump failure, nothing like traveling in rush hour traffic doing 75mph and car totally dieing. boy gm has made one quality car. 5. the last insult, my first and likely last gm product is when i thought boy i finally get something from gm in regards to one small defect, the hazard switch, i find out that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. wow not only i am out at least $1000 bucks on piece of crap product, gm does not even want to give a bone to hungry man. with this type of product it is no wonder gm is losing market share faster than any other automotive company. keep up the good work gm. clearly the are some serious defects with this vehicle and the gm

As reading over the website i notice the 2000 malibu is pretty much a lemon. i have had to replace the radio, pretty much every gasket in the engine, the fuel pump, brakes front and rear, now my turn signals don't work, just found out about the recall i have to check to see if i qualify, my engine knocks on cold starts, and it practically losses all power when i go to accelerate . . and top it off my transmision slips. . this vehicle needs to be looked into . . and something needs to be done about it. *jb

We unfortunately own a 2000 chevy malibu. we have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. we have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728.00. the air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. the turn signals are nonfunctional and our vin number is not included in the recall although it should be. then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around 800.00 to fix. the newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100.00 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. after looking over your site i found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. i feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 malibu's. please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it. *jb

While driving and/or attempting to use the turn signal, a short in the flasher switch made the turn signal inoperative and made other electrical components inoperative (ex. gauges, radio and a/c fan). the electrical problem also caused the engine to stall. when the consumer pushed the flasher switch repeatedly the electrical components would work temporarily. the fuel pump was replaced to alleviate the stalling condition. the technician has identified a problem in the flasher switch but has not replaced it. a recall on the switch is scheduled to start later in 2004 however the consumer's vehicle is not included in the recall due to vin. *ak *nm

3 months after i bought malibu in july, 2000 i was driving at 65 mph when my care lost all power. dealer told me that there was something wrong with the fuel indicator wiring and was falsely reading the amount of gas i had which resulted in my running out of gas at 65mph. problem has not repeated itself. at 21,000 miles my signal indicator lights failed and my hazard switch had to be replaced. at 23,000 miles my evaporator vent valve had to be replace (engine light remained on constantly). at 20,000 miles my car was vibrating whenever my brakes were applied. dealor said front brakes worn out and rotors out of round and they replaced the front brakes and refaced the rotors. at 33,000 miles, care again vitrated whenver brakes applied and dealer told me again that it was not under warranty and was happening because of hot spots and that my rotors needed to be cut even though they had just been fixed at 20,000 miles. was never told that manufacturer was having a problem with malibu brakes and was told it would cost approxiamtely $700.00 to fix rotors and it was my responsibility. my sevice for the brakes was done at future chevrolet in old bridge, nj. *ak

On sept. 29, 2010, i bought a 2000 chev malibu in ny from a nj dealer, the next day i noticed the check engine light on, so i took the car to a mechanic who told me that there was an issue with the gas emissions. i paid him to do a special emissions gas treatment, the check engine light remained on. the same car also has exterior lighting issues (the turn signals sporadically work and suddenly stop without waring and the emergency blinkers won't work either), i am submitting this because it is possibly related to the recall gas tank issues of this make, model and year car. today when i contacted chevrolet recall 800-630-2438 they informed me that the recalls are vin specific and that my car's vin # is not on that list and that they can not fix my car. ???

I have 2000 chevy malibu with 108,000 miles . puchased it with about 78,000 miles on it. when purchased i started having problems with ignition getting stuck and not turning so i replaced it. ran fine for a little while and then wouldn't start one day. was told that it wasn't getting fuel so i replaced the fuel pump. ran fine for a little while then won't start again. so this time i take to mechanic. he said that my that i may need to replace my starter..so ok i did hoping it would fix this problem. again it happens..i notice the theft system light is on and won't go off. i take back to mechanic and they hookup to computer and get a code that says my passlock system has error and i need to take to dealership so they can take off. i took to dealership and they said i was missing some turntables in my ignition so they added a few more and sent me on my way saying that should fix problem. next day won't start again!!! i have to turn key to acc and leave on for 10 minutes..turn key off when light finally go away and then it will start. having been left stranded over 100 times with a 2 year old i may add in 20 degree weather and also in 90 degree weather..its really scary! unreliable and quite frankly very unsafe!!!

I puchased this car with 20000 miles on it. i had it for a little over 5 months and i am replacing a fuel pump that will cost $650. the power steering has corrosion, so the power steering has to be flushed. replacement of the fuel filter, a cracked fan belt, and throttle body service. i have the gm extended warranty, but it only covers the cost to replace the fuel pump. everything else is out of pocket expenses because it is considered regular maintenance. the brakes also grind and seem to take too long for the car to stop. so i think brakes aren't far behind to be replaced. i am hoping i will not need rotors too. i have read so many complaints about the brakes on the 2000 chevy malibu. i try to buy american because i am a proud one. but the quality seem to be substandard compared to japanese cars. my next car will be foreign. us car makers need to step it up, as far as quality with these cars.*ak

I purchased my 2000 chevy malibu on february 13th of 2003. on february 27, 2003, the fuel sending unit was replaced . on july 18, 2003, the fuel pressure regulator was replaced . on february 18, 2004, oxygen sensor was replaced.on april 5, 2004, the gas tank was pulled down to check sending unit and adjust floater. i went to my mechanic today for an oil change and made another appointment on may 16th, to again have the same adjustments made that were made 1 year ago. in total, my out of pocket expences are $280.00 . some of the work done was under warranty. i did speak to someone at chevrolet last year and she told me that the car was 5 years old with no recalls on it for this complaint specifically and that nothing could be done on her end.

Fuel gauge read 1/2 to 1/4 full and tank ran dry while driving 65 mph on freeway to work. had to coast over 3 lanes to side of the freeway. sender unit was replaced and was told this was a common problem with malibus, aleros, and grand ams. have had friends with these cars and a sunfire that have all had the same problem. the defect investigation was dropped because of decrease in complaints, but my mechanic tells me he works on at least 5 of these models a month fixing this same problem on all of them. i think that if i personally know four people besides myself that have had this problem with the sender unit, gm should have recalled this component. just because someone hasn't been injured yet, should not be a determining factor.*ak

I too, have many of the problems that other malibu owners have. my turn signals work intermittently, the brakes have been replaced 2x, in addition to rotors, etc. the battery blew up, but was replaced as was the ac turning off and on by itself. the one issue that is very concerning to me, is one familiar to you. my car cuts off at anytime while driving. it has done this to me on 2 separate occasions. nashville has 3 interstates running through it and i was on them both times this happened. it was very scary and dangerous. it is out of warranty and the shops that i have taken it to cannot replicate the problem. the mechanics at then shops told me that malibu's are by far some of the most troublesome cars on the road today. someone is going to be killed. you lose control and have no steering ability, what does it take to fix the problem. i can see from others that their problems are being ignored as well. when will gm acknowledge the problem. don't they watch the news and see what happened with the firestone recall, or the tobacco companies that kept secrets? it is time for someone to be responsible for their product. *nlm
