On at least 10 occasions over the past 10 years when attempting to start the vehicle the anti-theft passlock system will activate for no apparent reason, which disables the ability to start the engine by cutting off the fuel. if i turn the ignition key to on position and wait for 10 minutes, then turn the key to the off position and then attempt to start the engine it will startup successfully. this is very annoying and potentially dangerous when it happens while parked in dark parking lots late at night or operating the vehicle in very cold weather. this problem has been reported by tens of thousands of gm owners over the past several years. why hasn't gm been forced to repair the problem. *tr

When we would just start the car it would rev up to between 3000 to 4000 rpm and it would stay that way. this was only one way that it would act up. the other ways were when you were just driving along and the car would start to accelerate on it's own. both ways you had to ride the brake and ride it hard in order not to hit the person in front of us. we had it in to one dealer twice with nothing getting fixed. we took it to a different dealer three times, they randomly replaced different things (guessing) at our cost, but problem still persisted. we even took it in when it was revving up to 3000 rpm, while they were under the hood it even went higher! we were told to turn it off because they were afraid it would blow, but when we came back to pick it up they said that it didn't happen again and they couldn't fix it if it didn't do it for them again. they told us that the best thing for us to do was to trade the car in on a different vehicle, we told him that this thing is a problem that should be taken care of and not just traded in. we contacted gm and told them that this is a problem that can cause serious harm not only to my wife and myself but to others. gm did nothing to assist with the problem. they said that if the dealer couldn't fix it that they couldn't help us. they wouldn't even contact the dealers to see what the problems were. we have approx. 116,000 miles and it now has additional problems with the acceleration. we still have the car because we can't afford another at this time, but i feel like i'm driving a time bomb. *tr

This car is an absolute lemon,it forces you to use dexcool antifreeze and this eats away the rubber in the lines, have spent thousands fixing head gaskets and redoing the whole cooling system to be able to use the old green antifreeze and after all of the problems(cant afford new car!) i have looked on line and i am not alone, thousands have had same problem, this needs to be recalled. it is common knowledge with chevy about the anti theft system, you have to put key in on pos. and wait ten mins for it to reset. i have lost a job b/c i was late for work too many times, have had ignition replaced twice,it has nothing to do w/ignition. i get stuck in the middle of nowhere car wont start and gotta freeze to death (in michigan!) waiting for it to reset. this is ridiculous. and chevy does nothing!

Why wasn't there a recall done? http://www.girardgibbs.com/dexcool.html the chevy dexcool issue has been going on forever and according to this there was a settlement but there is no recall. how does this happen. i've got a leaky intake manifold gasket and no way to cover the cost. not only that but because i was never told of the results of this lawsuit i've missed the time to repair and file. what's the deal and how come there isn't a recall? *tr

We had purchased a 2001 chevy malibu ls in 2004, it had 28,922 mileage. on july 1st 2004, had 28,959 miles, the engine light kept coming on so we brought it to forest city to get it checked out, they found the reservoir low and topped it off, they said no visible coolant leaks! on july 12th 2007 we had brought it back to quirk ( which was forest city) they said that the lower intake manifold caskets were leaking coolant, they wanted $879.00 to fix it (mileage 46,495). we got it fixed by a certified mechanic for $370.00 on july27,2007. now we had a 20 point inspection done onjanuary 29th 2007 and quirk said that we need intake manifold caskets again!, with only 9,953, after the first time they went, ( milage 56,248). i have talked to quirk and they said they would take 10% off the $695.00 price to fix it, so i talked to gm and they said it wasn't there problem but would take 25% off. if it wasn't there problem then why would they do that? when i asked them why i wasn't contacted about the dex cool problem, they had no answer. i have checked a lot of web sites and this is happening over and over again to people. why can't something be done about this. i don't feel that i should have to pay for something that gm is responsible for. i hope that you can help all of us, that are having this and other problems. thank you for listening. *tr

I have a 2001 chevy malibu with a 3.1 liter engine and i have had to replace the intake gasket once because it leaked oil into the antifreeze and antifreeze into the oil. it was a problem that i did not know existed with this motor? i found out a short time later that the damage was extensive and had to put a motor with 30,000 miles into my car. that was 1year ago last august and as of today september 5th i have the same problem with this motor and i'm going to have to replace the intake gasket again. how can i get this replaced at general motors cost, rather than mine again? i know of many others that have the same problem that i do. *tr

I have twice replaced the intake manifold gaskets on my 2001 chevrolet malibu. both times it has started as a slow seep from the end of the engine on the drivers side. at first we didn't have any puddles, just a low fluid indicator alarm. then we had intermittant puddles. the latest occurence included a catastrophic failure with about an half a gallon of fluid into the engine, and it was 200 miles from home. we were fortunate that we were not driving when the failure was discovered, so we didn't have to replace the engine. the first repair occured in january 2005 at 101k miles, this one in august 07 with 144k miles. the first repair was done at an asce shop and cost $700, this one was at a dealer and cost $1200. i described the incident to another mechanic, and his first question was, gm car? it is quite common and well known to mechanics.

Car initially wouldn't start, would only turn over. car would die in traffic at highway speeds with no warning requiring trying to coast to a safe place out of traffic if possible with a severe potential to be hit from behind even with hazard lights on. car towed to chev dealership. dealership replaced intake manifold gasket. tech said gasket was leaking causing engine to hydrolock. third time driving the car since repair, car died in traffic again on freeway. car is setting at dealership again waiting for technician to diagnose since obviously the $1200 repair just completed didn't solve the problem. *tr

5/05 coolant leak- replace intake manifold gasket $1100.00 8/05 coolant leak(continued)- replace head gasket, completely replace the air conditioning unit-$1085.00 1/06 replace egr valve, solenoid, gaskets $435.00 i've been around cars all my life, my father was a mechanic. my point is that i know if you take care of a car it will last longer. i take very good care of this car and i know gaskets should not deteriorate the way these did. looking at the reports on mycarstats.com it appears to me that what ever material was used for the gaskets in this car must be defective. there are way too many complaints for this to be any thing else. maintaining my car is a priority for me as i am disabled. to have a mechanical breakdown is a major issue. this cars engine was unable to maintain compression because of the leaky gaskets. it kept stalling repeatedly, i feel putting my safety at risk. i have tried to work this out with the dealership but it's clear to me what their priority is and it's not me or my car. i believe there should be an investigation into this matter. i have been told that the gasket material they used in this model was different from other years. i believe this is a bigger problem than gm is ready to admit. *jb

After driving approximately 20-30 minutes, car will surge, and then stall. after waiting a few minutes the car will start and go another 15 min or so. this has happened on multiple occasions, and after multiple repairs. the last incident occurred on a busy bridge with no hazard lane; a police officer pushed me off the bridge with his squad car. i have replaced the alternator, fuel filter, & fuel relay. after each repair i was assured that the problem was corrected. after each repair the problem occurred again. i have taken it to two mechanics and they have not been able to find any problems. *jb

Six months into driving our new malibu a intake manifold develop a slow leak of antifreeze. in the winter more aggressive in the summer slower. yet it increased gradually over the next few years. i found out this is a common manufacturing problem. the leak grew so bad that it had to be repaired this month. the leaking antifreeze is not only a danger to the parts in the engine compartment but also the environment. this is a poorly manufactured part and gm should stand behind the repairs. the total cost to put a properly manufactured gasket with labor is $ 691.25. *jb

My 2001 chevy malibu has started leaking coolant. the low coolant light has come on, gone off, come on and gone off. when i check the reserve, the level is so low it's empty. after purchasing, so far 6 gallons, of dexcool and mixing it according to the directions each time, the coolant lasted a shorter and shorter period of time. the temp. warning light began flashing and ringing, then went off and the temp went down. i took it to firestone, where i just had the car inspected. now i'm being told that the manifold intake gasket is bad and the repairs will cost me $1023.00 after doing research on the problem, it seems that gm has been aware of this problem with the plastic gaskets for some time. does someone have to die due to an overheated engine, a catastrophic engine failure before gm will recall and fix this problem? or is this how mr. goodwrench can make so many repairs and advertise about how many cars they fix and man hours they work? i loved this car! i bought it with 5 miles on it(4 of which i put on during the test drive.) a 2001 with only 45k miles? am i the only one who sees that this is a manufacturing issue and that gm should stop issuing private notices and recall the cars for proper parts & servicing?*jb

Our 2001 malibu developed a coolant leak and in may of 05. the dealer replaced the upper intake gasket and said it was fixed. the engine would not maintain compression and kept stalling. i am disabled and i felt there was a safety issue. after 3 or 4 trips to the dealer without results i took the car to another mechanic who pointed out that it was the head gasket that was leaking. i am out a lot of money for a car that's not very old. after reading the other complaints from other malibu owners i am convinced there must be a defect with these gaskets. i have also had to have the air conditioner completely replaced as well. i don't know if one has any thing to do with the other but it was at the same time. now my heater won't turn off so it's over riding the air conditioner. because of all of these repairs i have over $1000 in rental car expenses. this is a matter of safety as far as i'm concerned. *nm

The vehicles heat gauge stopped working and low coolant light came on. checked coolant level and discovered sludge in expansion chamber ( coolant recovery tank). flushed system of sludge and trouble shot reason for coolant loss. found intake manifold gasket leaking. vehicle will require new intake manifold gasket set, thermostat, hoses, water pump and possibly radiator. tried to flush system completely but found secondary plumbing such as heater core, radiator, coolant crossover and coolant bleed hosing gummed up with oily waxy type substance resembling gumballs (dex-cool?). i think gm should step up to the plate and take responsibility for the so called wonder coolant. after all the sticker on the expansion chamber does say anything about changing every 5 years or 150000 miles. *jb

Engine has experienced valve-slap since approx 5000 miles. the dealer advised that this is inherent in the design of this particular engine to make it economical. chevrolet offered 100,000 mile extended warranty on the engine. the (check engine) light activated several months ago. code indicated small emissions leak. made sure gas cap was on tight, then cleared code with reader - issue resolved. approx a month ago, check engine light on again. code was p1404 (temporary code). tried to clear out code with reader, came back. dealer advised that this was caused by faulty egr valve so replaced the egr valve with genuine chevey part, cleared code with reader - approx 20 miles later (check engine) light back on. i suspect that issue is related to the valve-slap problem and related wear on pistons. *ak

I have purchased two (2001) chevrolet malibu's that experienced the same problem. the intake manifold gasket is defective which causes antifreeze to leak. i experienced the problem with my first malibu back in 2005. based on documentation of consumer complaints that i submitted to the dealership, the repair was covered outside of the warranty and i only paid the warranty deductible. my second malibu was purchased used from a non-gm dealership in the fall of 2005. i purchased the second car due to the first one being a total loss in an accident. i am now experiencing the same leaking gasket problem with the second car. i contacted gm directly to inquire about having the car fixed. the car has 103,341 miles on it. regardless of the mileage, the mechanics that i have spoken to say this is a manufacturer's defect because the gasket(s) are cheap plastic. as of date, gm is not willing to cover the cost of the repair which costs $700+. the dealership that i use to service my vehicle will only offer a discount on parts and labor. the dealership is not at fault. it is gm's responsibility to correct this problem. i have 61 pages of consumer complaints referring to the same leaking gasket problem with the malibu. *nm

 (1) coolant leaking immediately after putting it into my vehicle. (2) my car has overheated three times on the freeway. it will not accelerate, starts violently vibrating, then smoke bellows out of my hood when i finally stop. i have been stranded on the freeway three times with my two-year-old in the car, as well as my unborn child. (3) i have taken my vehicle to a chevrolet repair man who found a technical service bulletin on the problem issued by chevrolet. he explained the intake manifold was manufactured crooked causing coolant to leak into my engine and dilute my oil which will eventually burn my motor and ruin it completely. when i contacted chevrolet, they were very unhelpful both times stating i had to pay a chevy dealership to diagnose the problem and that they might help me with a little cost assistance but not much. it is about $600 to fix this problem that is not normal maintenance or wear-and-tear. it is a manufacturing defect. i have had several people e-mail me about the same problem after posting a comment about it on a website. *nm

Filled gas tank, drove 100 yards, gauge drops to read empty. happens occasionally in the same manner. erratic. requires utilization of the trip meter to track fuel usage. on one occasion gauge read tank was about 1/8 full, car stopped running and was out of fuel. second issue: theft security light has begun to come on erratically. driving along, light will suddenly come on. after departure of car, and return, driver must then follow 10 min. procedure to alleviate the problem. third issue: without installation of high quality tires on this vehicle, the noise level and wear pattern is absurd. the cupping and wearing has occured on 2 different sets of good quality tires. upon installation of michelin high quality tires, the problem stopped.

There was a rear collision that occured a week after purchasing the vehicle. the car was fixed with no frontal damge at all. the rear damage was minor. a week after receiving the vehicle the car would not start. the car was towed to the dealership and it was determined that the car needed a new ignition(600.00) that was not covered under the warranty.the dealership received the payment and the car was fixed.the dealership didnt have any sort of explanation to why the ignition was needed that soon after the purchase of the vehicle. eight months later the car wouldnt start.the car was then towed to the dealership.a fuel pump was install but other items weren't covered under waranty.the car was received after the dealership received the payment. four months later,( may 1,2004),the car decelerated in the middle of the highway.the driver was forced to steer to the side of the road, where the temperature gauge went to the maximum level and the car would not start. the next day the car was towed. *ak

We are paying on a 2001 malibu. the fuel sensor went out showing gasoline when there wasn't. the car stalled in rush hour traffic. the sensor was replaced but i had to pay for the fuel filter plus a deductible on my extended warranty. next the blinkers decided to only work occassionally same week the starter started dragging then the car started to run hot. took it to the dealer, replaced blinker switch (no mention made of the recall) replaced the starter and replaced the gasket that was leaking. when i had added coolant to get myself home the coolant that was n the car was green, the coolant i put in the car green..was supposed to be orange when i told the dealer there was green coolant in the car he said oh someones booboo unfortunately you have to pay for it...almost 300.00. yesterday, long memorial day weekend left work again rush hour, car begins to make a horrible noise i pull off notice the alternator belt is coming apart but the noise that i heard had nothing to do with the alternator belt sounds like metal on metal. $1400.00 worth of work done in april, 800.00 a few months before that and now this...the car is well maintained by my husband. now i read what i have to look forward to, the car was bought chevy certified from a chevy dealer. *la

I am trying to sell a 2001 chevolet malibu ls for my dad who is 86 years old and cannot because of a start up noise that doesn't go away till the engine warms up. i have lost 4 buyers so far. this automobile has only 5600 miles on it. i have found a service bulletin saying there can be a noise from cylinder 1 thru 4. this is interfering with the resale of the car as no one trust it. i had it analized by the dealer and they said it was a piston slap. and it would cost around 1600.00 dollars to fix it. gm agreed to go half and half but then the dealer said if the piston slap had damaged the cylinder it would need a new engine. this to me is a defect that the manufactuer should be responsible for because as i stated be fore the car has only 5600 miles on it. please contact me at 856-227-6671 if need be. thank you. *ak

*ak

After researching the service bulletins section of this website, i have come to realize that i have complained/had serviced about 85% of the same problems that are listed on your database. i purchased this car new, from everett chevrolet, wa in 2000. since the purchase. date, i had chevy do the following: new brakes (all the way around - once, front rotors/pads - twice), all new pistons, transmission replaced, miss on #1 cylinder - replaced 1 failed spark plug, left rear door squeaks when open/shut - lubed (has happened 3 times now), front left noise from struts/brakes - not able to verify as of yet (possible strut problem/lube), fan in dashboard has a sound in the middle (just above the cd player/radio) like there is a piece of paper caught in the housing (confirmed after 4 complaints, faulty fan motor), passenger front seat squeaks when occupied (dealerships have not been able to duplicate./fix), rearview mirror rattles while driving at highway speeds (tightened, still does it in hot weather). bottom line, this is my first new car purchase and i am having serious doubts about keeping the car - as it only has 21,405 miles on it. with the 3/30 warranty. coming up in oct. 2003, i am very much afraid that i have purchased a lemon and not looking forward to spending anymore time/$$$ on this vehicle. any suggestions? *jb

I have a 2001 chevy malibu with the 3.1l v6 engine that has 4 defective pistons in it (gm document id# 773655) also installed in 2001 buick, chevy, pontiac and some olds models. i bought this car new with 4 miles on it, it had a slight tick when started cold at that time, which the dealer explained that it was injector noise, not to be concerned. the noise got just a little worse until it got up to 37,000 miles (just out of warranty), then it became very noisy and didn't go away when warmed up. i had complained about this noise every time i had the dealer change the oil. then i found a complaint on the internet about these engines and the fix. that is when he finally produced the bulletin explaining the problem, and informed me that it was too late, warranty had expired. i contacted chevrolet (request#71-79653429) and they told me about the same thing-warranty is gone, sorry you didn't know to get it repaired under warranty. we are 72 years old and bought this car to last us the rest of our lives, and it just may not make it. we do not drive a lot, 46,500 miles in over nine years, but this thing is getting noisier by the month. can anything be done to help us old folks? *tr

*jb

Lower intake manifold replacement. started losing antifreeze - leak on driveway. mechanic traced the leak with dye tablets and sealant tablets -- after several months i took it chev. dealer and they tested everything and replaced the lower intake manifold and was told this model car had manifold problems. it cost me $990. i had this work done about a year ago and thought maybe with the other malibu's having problems there might be a recall -- i'm waiting. *jb

Tl*- the contact stated that the front brakes on his 2001 chevrolet malibu (50000 failure mileage) had to be replaced every six months for the last two years. the contact also stated that antifreeze leaks into the oil. this will be the third time that the intake manifold gasket has had to be replaced. the vehicle has been taken to a mechanic six times concerning these issues. the brake and manifold problems still exists. the current mileage was 130,000.

I had taken my vehicle in to get a simple oil change and was informed my vehicle has a faulty intake manifold gasket which is a very expensive repair costing any where from$ 800-$1000.00 . on my searching the internet i have found that this is one of the problems that gm cars are having over 70,000 miles. intake manifold leaks can lead to any number of very serious, and expensive problems. while the part itself isn't costly, the labor to repair is costly. *nm

After having to refill my engine coolant on a regular basis i finally took my 2001 chevy malibu into the dealer to have it looked at. i expected a leaky hose but found out the problem was a failed intake manifold gasket causing the coolant to drain into the engine. the dealer guaranteed me that if i didn't perform the $900 repair that the engine was shot, and that the odds of saving the engine even after the repair were only 50/50. the other options i was given were to completely rebuild the engine ($3000+) or cut my loses and trade it in now. after doing some research, i discovered that this is an extremely common problem, resulting from defective gaskets, that chevrolet has done nothing to remedy.*jb

I noticed on my 2001 chevy malibu that the coolant light was coming on so i took it to the dealership where i purchased it. he raised the hood and said i was low on coolant without even taking the lid off. he said he would have it checked out and it would be an hour or more so i stayed since i had no way of getting home. two hours later he came out and said i had a intake manifold gasket leak, a water pump that leaked at one time but wasn't leaking now but needed replaced and handed me a bill for 1200.00. mind you this car only has 39,000 miles on it and when purchased it already had 25,000 on it and i have only put a little over 14,000 on it myself and it is only 5 years old. i have never encountered my car overheating and always had the oil change when required. i felt that this major of a problem shouldn't be happening so i called gm motors and they called back and said it wasn't under factory warranty and that i would have to pay to have it fixed. i have found out that it is unsafe to drive as my engine will blow up if i drive it. i also found out that it is not an isolated problem, that chevy malubu's from 1997 have had this problem and gm has ignored it. i feel that gm motors should pay to fix my car as i can not drive it for safety reasons at all. if i drive it i could blow my engine and cause a major accident as the car will stop. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 45 mph, the temperature gauge went above the normal range. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, where it was determined the fuel regulator was spewing fuel onto the engine. the intake manifold seals were no longer there, causing fuel to get into the oil. the repair shop replaced the intake gasket, thermostat, timing belt, cooling fan, fuel regulator, and radiator cap. the manufacturer was alerted.

I took my 2001 chevy malibu ls in to get the oil changed. the mechanic told me that a common problem for the gm engines of my year and others was the intake manifold gasket leaking coolant, and that if left un-fixed, the engine would eventually seize up. i was told that the material that the gaskets were made out of has since been changed, which would imply that they know it to be faulty. i contacted gm and took it into the dealer where they confirmed the problem. i don't know if this issue makes the car unsafe to drive, but i had heard that there was a recall in place for faulty alternators and figured this problem was about equal to that in potential danger. out of curiosity, i looked on the internet and there are plenty of websites with people that have the same issue. *jb

I had to repair a manifold intake gasket, leaking water. . i have talked to several auto repair shops and they said this is a common problem on these chevy malibus. the chevy co. should have to do a recall on this problem. unfair that the consumer has to pay the bill to have this fixed. please check into forcing a recall on this please. *nm

While driving home from work in 90+ degree heat my car overheated to the point where i had to have it towed in and was told by the mechanics that my coolant had been leaking and causing the car to over heat there blowing the head gasket and causing me to have to pay $1200.00+ to have another engine put it. i have heard this is a commom with the 2001 chevrolet malibus. i don't know what the repair shop done with the old motor, but it was fried.

I have recently had to take my car to the mechanic to get fixed. it was leaking the engine coolant and the manifold gasket had to be replaced which cost over $800 to fix. now , the check engine light is on and that will be another expense that i will have to make on a 4 year old 26,000 mile car.

I notice that my coolant had to be refilled because the low coolant light was staying on in the dash. the repair shop told me they had to replace the intake manafold and i now have coolant in my engine and in my oil. this is a potential dangerous problem with the malibu. the engine could blow creating other problems. the same problem has been noted with many other malibu owners. *ak

I own a 2001 chevrolet malibu with less than 41000 miles. recently the intake manifold gasket failed, allowing coolant and engine oil to enter mix.*ak after doing some research, i have found that this has been an on going problem with this type of car. chevy expects it customers to fix this problem out of their own pocket and denies any responsiblities. again, if you investigate this matter you will find that this particular type of gm car is very prone to this failure. i believe that this is a safety issue due to the fact that once manifold gasket fails the engine may stop without warning, and then fail to start.

Driving at hwy speed check coolant light came on added coolant took to local garage. the lower intake manifold needs to be replaced at a cost of approx. $900. it only has 44,000 miles and i have had all the required servicing done to this car.the garage tech said that they have had to replace this on several other malibu's. this must be a defective part as it should not have to replaced this soon. what can be done? *la
