Odi opened ea 02-028 to review complaints of consumers reporting that their fuel gauge was incorrectly displaying the amount of fuel in the gas tank.the fuel gauge receives an electrical signal from a fuel tank sending sensor circuit card.a float arm in the tank moves electrical contacts that rub against the card as the level of fuel rises and falls.disruption of the electrical signal (such as caused by corrosion of the circuit card) will cause incorrect readings to register on the fuel gauge.gm reported in their response to odi dated january 13, 2003 that the primary cause of erratic fuel gauge operation is excess elemental sulfur in fuel.gm reported that abnormal levels of sulfur sporadically occurred in certain parts of canada and the u.s. resulting in reports of fuel gauge malfunction.gm modified the sending sensor for vehicles built after october 2000.it made a second sensor modification for vehicles built after january 2003.gm also issued a customer satisfaction campaign (gm number 00101) in december 2000 for u.s. customers in the state of maine and issued several service bulletins informing dealers of the availability of sensors with improved corrosion resistance.the complaint trend indicates that complaints peaked in late 2000 to early 2001.warranty claims declined since peaking in april 2002.based on the number of complaints and the indication of a declining trend, further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

In a two week period, my 2001 chev. malibu has left me stranded in the middle of nowhere with my two children. i had to have a wrecker pick it up both times, and both times i have had to rent a car. both times i was told it is out of gas. it was showing having plenty of gas. the mechanic at the chevrolet dealership said this is the 15th one in two weeks time. he stated that it is the fuel sensor module.!!!!! *jb

The car will start fine, but once you turn it off and go to start again it will just crank. the first time i replaced the fuel pump. the second time i repaced spark plugs and wires. the third time i didn't know what else to change and a friend said to try putting the key in the on position for 10 mins. i did and it started right up. it turns out the ant-theft system keeps locking me out about every month. it is a major pain to have to be somewhere and not know when the car will start or not, and then sit there for ten mins to reset it. *tr

2001 malibu with 50,525 miles with first occurrence 12/07/06. passlock system failure and car will not start (new fuel pump). anti theft light keeps blinking and car won't start continues almost monthly. malibu has been towed to dealer 7 times since dec 06. fuel pump replaced dec 06 not the problem. iginition cylinder not the problem. towed again 10/17/07 same problem. dealer clipped 3 wires to passlock sytem said they were crimped. (that might be the problem according to tech) however, probably been that way since car purchased in 2001 new. wait and see. called gm at one point and they covered half of a $800 repair bill. so far over $1500.00 in repairs and $400.00 plus in towing plus rental car fees. gm why not recall? too many complaints on same problem. *tr

Dt: the vehicle has completely shut down five times. the first time was in april of 2003. the contact had it towed ito the dealership. they told her that there was a problem with the ignition cylinder. they replaced the ignition cylinder. the theft system light came on before the vehicle shuts down. the second was in june 2004. the contact had just pulled out of driveway when it shut down. dealership replaced the fuel pump, which did not need to be replaced. the third time was in july, 2004 and the dealership said that the battery needed to be replaced. the contact had the battery replaced. the fourth occasion happened on october 25, 2004. the dealership replaced the ignition cylinder. in march of 2005 the theft system light came on, and she took vehicle back to the dealership. they told her that they could not do anything because there was no problem. the most recent time was october 4, 2005. she had it towed to the dealership, and they replaced the ignition cylinder again. the service dealer said that the part was known to go out but, not as often as on contact's vehicle. *ak.

I have had the brakes and rotors replaced twice since buying the car in april of 2001. i took the car to jim butler chevrolet for the turn signal/flasher problem which was later recalled and i was reimbursed. i took it to don darr chevy which fixed a faulty switch operating the air conditioner/switching to outside air. i had the car towed to dobbs when it would not start, they said it was the fuel pump and assembly module. today, jim butler chevrolet replaced the lock cylinder and ignition switch because of the theft system light and the car not starting.but was unable to find the cause of the daytime running lights not working. oh! but they noticed a recall on the hazard lights and replaced it. they were the one who replaced it the first time. i also told them of the over crank/grinding noise after the car is started, happens occasionally. they could not duplicate, so no repair. i am not happy with this car or chevy because of all the problems and the expense it has caused and cost me. i used to hold chevrolet in high regard, but can no longer recommend anyone owning one.*ak

There was a rear collision that occured a week after purchasing the vehicle. the car was fixed with no frontal damge at all. the rear damage was minor. a week after receiving the vehicle the car would not start. the car was towed to the dealership and it was determined that the car needed a new ignition(600.00) that was not covered under the warranty.the dealership received the payment and the car was fixed.the dealership didnt have any sort of explanation to why the ignition was needed that soon after the purchase of the vehicle. eight months later the car wouldnt start.the car was then towed to the dealership.a fuel pump was install but other items weren't covered under waranty.the car was received after the dealership received the payment. four months later,( may 1,2004),the car decelerated in the middle of the highway.the driver was forced to steer to the side of the road, where the temperature gauge went to the maximum level and the car would not start. the next day the car was towed. *ak

The fuel guage reports incorrect fuel level. you can go the the gas station and fill the car up and the gas hand will show it as being empty and before you put fuel in the tank the guage was at a 1/4 tank. you may have to turn the car off and on several times before it will show that it is full. also, while driving all of a sudden the car will cut off in heavy traffic. one time the car showed 3/4 tank of fuel while it was empty. luckly, i was on a downgrade and was able to get it into the emergency lane on the interstate. the dealer has told me that there is not a problem with the fuel system. furthermore, the check engine light has come on because the oxygen sensor has been damaged by the car running out of gas.*ak

Fuel gauge reading 1/4 tank remaining and ran out of gas on highway. filled up with gas and gauge would read full, then empty, then full again. gauge has been inaccurate and need to use trip meter to determine when to fill tank. *jb

Filled gas tank, drove 100 yards, gauge drops to read empty. happens occasionally in the same manner. erratic. requires utilization of the trip meter to track fuel usage. on one occasion gauge read tank was about 1/8 full, car stopped running and was out of fuel. second issue: theft security light has begun to come on erratically. driving along, light will suddenly come on. after departure of car, and return, driver must then follow 10 min. procedure to alleviate the problem. third issue: without installation of high quality tires on this vehicle, the noise level and wear pattern is absurd. the cupping and wearing has occured on 2 different sets of good quality tires. upon installation of michelin high quality tires, the problem stopped.

We are paying on a 2001 malibu. the fuel sensor went out showing gasoline when there wasn't. the car stalled in rush hour traffic. the sensor was replaced but i had to pay for the fuel filter plus a deductible on my extended warranty. next the blinkers decided to only work occassionally same week the starter started dragging then the car started to run hot. took it to the dealer, replaced blinker switch (no mention made of the recall) replaced the starter and replaced the gasket that was leaking. when i had added coolant to get myself home the coolant that was n the car was green, the coolant i put in the car green..was supposed to be orange when i told the dealer there was green coolant in the car he said oh someones booboo unfortunately you have to pay for it...almost 300.00. yesterday, long memorial day weekend left work again rush hour, car begins to make a horrible noise i pull off notice the alternator belt is coming apart but the noise that i heard had nothing to do with the alternator belt sounds like metal on metal. $1400.00 worth of work done in april, 800.00 a few months before that and now this...the car is well maintained by my husband. now i read what i have to look forward to, the car was bought chevy certified from a chevy dealer. *la

False fuel gauge reading; nhtsa tsb #031103, 3/11/2003. my 2001 malibu ran out of gas with fuel gauge showing 1/2 full. the engine stopped, power steering & power brakes were lost when my daughter was driving at 55mph. light traffic volumes prevented this from being a potentially fatal situation. the fuel gauge continues to give false readings, chevrolet has declined to correct the failed fuel gauge because the car is over the mileage warranty limitations. i have reported this fuel gauge failure to gm/chevrolet (case #1-151341797). gm/chevrolet has issued a tsb #01-06-04-008d titled fuel system - inaccurate fuel gauge readings on april 2003 due to the high failure rate of their fuel gauges. i feel that a recall may be warranted due to false fuel gauge readings when you consider that the net result of running out of fuel causes the severe reduction of steering and braking capabilities. thank you raymond e keaton keatonr@yahoo.com *la
