1.car keeps overheating. put antifreeze it and run for a while and it will overheat again. no antifreeze on ground but keeps losing the antifreeze. took vehicle to mechanic and was told that the antifreeze is mixing with the oil that it has a cracked manifold gasket. recommendation was replace engine. 2.took vehicle to the dealer and they said that the on board computer chip thing needs to be replaced and they informed me that is a known problem with the car but no recall is in place as of yet. the repair cost is over 1300.00. *tr

I walked out the door ready to go to work got in the car turned the key it would not start. so first i had to wake someone up with a phone call because this is our only car. got a ride to work late and called the place where i am buying this car for them to tow it two miles to there shop and charge me seventy eight dollars. i get the call from them saying its the fuel pump(another common unnecessary fix that you here repeat over and over. he also said the antitheft light was on and that i somehow demagnitized the key(wasn't possible because i was given a all silver key no chip in it) so that cost almost a extra hundred for the key.so after im riding almost fine torque could be more v6ish but i digress tuesday sep 4 2012 not a month later it doesn't start again, and again on my way to work. this time i had it towed and by the time it made it to the mechanic its was starting fine. i don't make enough money to continuously worry about this obvious widespread problem with gm vehicles made from 99-05. if whoever reads this types in my car wont start 2002 chevy malibu, and just read the different peoples story's and see videos. in conclusion gm must recall these vehicles and fix these problems. im a long time gm supporter of there american made cars and trucks. i've owned a 1989 cadillac biaritz, 1999 chevy surburban, and now this 2002 chevey malibu.ive been lucky i read about a guy whose antitheft acted up while he was driving with his child. recall and save lives and headaches. *tr

As i was driving down the road, i signaled for a left turn. when i signaled the turn, there was a buzzing noise in the steering column and the engine turned off, resulting in a complete loss of power to steering and brakes. luckily, i was going about 10 mph and was able to stop the car, albeit in the middle of the street. i noticed the dashboard lights were on. the car restarted immediately and i drove it 1/2 block to a parking space. i subsequently took the car to fh dailey, the local chevy dealer. they told me there was a problem with the bcm (body control module) that had caused the engine to shut off while the car was being driven. they are replacing the bcm. they did not seem particularly concerned about the problem and my impression is it is not unusual for them to encounter it. i am concerned that, had i been driving in traffic, on the highway, or on a curving road, the engine failure could have resulted in significant injury or fatality to myself or others.

I have had intermittent electrical problems almost since buying the car in 2004. in 2010 i experienced a scary new twist: my blinkers won't always work. it happened maybe three times total over the next 12-18 months, but it is happening again, and i am now doing much more around-town driving. i have read other complaints where some owners have been able to get the blinkers working again by toggling the hazard lights, but this is not the case with my car. i turn the vehicle on and the blinkers will work the first time i use them, then not again for the rest of my trip (or in some cases, the rest of the day).

Bought my malibu new, had no problems with it until after 100,000 miles. was at a yellow light and the car shut off turned key to off position and restarted the car and went on. i say about 5 mounths later we went out of town for 3 day came back went to the car tryed to start it. it would start and shut off it would keep doing it. toke to the shope they had for over a month pull back seat out thinking the wires under the seat was bad. then check a lot of other stuff then he said it was the key switch and replaced it got it going. called use up to pick the car up and it wouldn't start. he replace that one with another switch called us up to pick it up and it would not start. then he by passed it with a toggle switch it worked for one day and started all over again. we don't know what to do. it is the anti theft system.

I purchased my chevrolet malibu from a private part and the vehicle was running fine but sometimes it does not want to start. bought a new battery and replaced the the ignition switch and still have the starting problem. seems that this type of vehicle has a history of anti theft system problems i called a chevrolet dealership to ask if it could be repaired and was told i need to take it in at a cost of 80.00 dollars to check it plus towing fees. i don't feel it is right that they do know the problem but still trying to get more money out of customers.

 1. the turn signals would not illuminate. just stopped working for no reason. lights were not burned out. then they mysteriously started working just as they had stopped. for no reason. incidents became more frequent with no apparent cause. not weather related. after reading complaints on this site, i found that if i turned on my hazard flashers, the blinkers would work again. 2. i was rear ended on 11/4/11 though and could not get the flashers to work. i don't know if my brake lights were working or not when the incident occurred. 3. the air conditioner and heater only work on the highest level. 4. the door locks will lock and unlock at randon while driving. 5. the key fob will work sometimes, most times not lately. 6. the security system will honk the horn sometimes when the key fob does lock the doors, most times it does not honk though. 7. the car overheats as the coolant container is loose and the radiator cap does not fit properly even though i purchased a new one. the gauge for the temperature doesn't seem to be accurate. 8. sometimes the heater does not work, just as the a/c didn't work most of the time in the summer. 9. anytime i try to use the cigarette lighter, it blows the fuse, leaving that feature totally useless. this car is very unpredictable and for a single woman, i feel it creates potential to be in a very dangerous situation. i do not know what to expect from this car and i really thought i was buying a reliable used car since it is a chevrolet malibu. was i ever wrong and although i have always bought chevrolet, it will not be my preference in the future.

2002 chevrolet malibu security/anti theft system erroneously disables the car - every 20 or starts, for no reason, requiring a lengthy process to re-enable the ignition system. car is low mileage and has original keys & key fob.

Car fails to start after shutting off. theft system has to be reset by leaving the key on for 9 minutes. gm knows about this but will not do anything about it. car does this about twice a month. car started doing this at 52000 miles in 2005.

The 2000-2003 chevy malibu will turn over but won't start, ever!. auto repair place kept care for last 8 days. problem is caused by the antitheft system. dealers and auto-repair shops charge $1000 without fixing the problem. i've seen over a hundred complaints on this issue from people with malibus of this era from the 'carcomplaints website'. http://carcomplaints.asterpix.com/cy/2427771/?q=2002+chevy+malibu+starting+problems request: ask gm to come up with a solution

I bought this car as a steal from a dealership. it was used as a trade in and the carfax report looked good. however, no one told me of the passlock problem. today, i had to call off work after stopping for a cup of coffee and having to spend 3.5+ hours resetting and starting the car, i have often had difficulties and learned of the 10 minute trick, but it doesn't always work. gm should stand behind their products. from what i've gathered the repair can cost as high as $600 for a design flaw that will likely repeat itself. no wonder they went bankrupt with such shoddy products.

I bought a 2002 chevy malibu from a private party. up until a few days ago it was running fine. one day it doesn't start up right away but i don't think anything of it. i park it then later get in to go to the store and vehicle will not start. so i get a new battery and that still did not fix it. i notice that the anti-theft light is on and is preventing me from starting my own car. a local gm dealership has my car and they say that there is definitely something going on with my ignittion and theft system. there are thousands of complaints about the anti-theft system on 2002 chevy malibus and malibus not letting owners start their car. this is a manufacturing problem and gm knows all about it, yet they refuse to own up and issue a recall. it's not right that we have to pay for repairs on a defective theft system that gm built in there vehicles. they should be ashamed for putting thousands of american's at risk because everytime they start their car they have to wait 10, 20 mins, and sometimes more just for their theft light to go off to start their car. that is actually putting people at risk. does something awful have to happen before gm opens up their eyes to this dangerous problem???????

2002 malibu will not start- anti theft system has shut down car. fixed 5 years ago- over ride last year- won't start. also tail lights work when they want to-most the time not at all. keep having leaks in coolant area- needs to be fixed yearly running around $900 a year.

I have a 02 chevy malibu that the passlock alarm keeps activating almost every time i turn off the ignition, leaving me stranded for 10 minutes each time waiting for the alarm to reset. this problem has been getting more frequent over the last 2 years to where every third crank activates the alarm. this is a ongoing problem with no approximate incident date, but i will use todays date.

On 6-24-2008 i was driving down the street, and i went to turn on my left turn signal, 100 feet before the turning lane (so as to warn the person behind me, that i was going to move into the left hand turning lane), and i went to turn on my left hand turn signal, and not realizing that it wasn't working, i went to move over into the left hand turn lane, and i almost hit the car that was behind me, because as he said you didn't give me any warning that you wanted to go into the left turn lane, where i already was. you didn't turn your signal on! the guy was really pissed off at me. i had my turn signal on way ahead of time. however ,after careful inspection, i noticed that the turn signal's were no longer working at all! this really worried me, because if this guy had gone totally crazy on me, and had a gun, i have no doubt that he would have used it on us. i noticed that these turn signal's on my 2002 chev. malibu, are some how inter connected to the emergency signal (i found this out, after reviewing my 2002 chev. malibu repair book. this problem need's to be corrected immediately, because it is a major problem, every time i go to make a turn. it's caused more problem's than my family or i have ever wanted. up until this problem arose, my family & i always believed in chev. car's. now thou, i would have to reconsider ever buying a chev. i need this problem fixed immediately

Own 2002 chevy malibu. the security interlock kicks in frequently. i have to wait 10 minutes while the car resets, only then may i start the car. (kinda similar to the fuel pump shutting off if a rear end bump occurs-safety). strangely too, i hear an electrical sizzing sound just over and behind the radio. this is affecting my turn signals from working. i hit the safety flasher button and the sizzing noise stops, and the turn signals may or may not operate. somehow the radio, the security system, and the turn signals are wired together, and the car thinks someone is stealing my radio, causing the security interlcok to kick in. thats when i have to turn the key to on, than wait 10 minutes for the security system to reset. only after 10 minutes may i restart the car (this is in the owners manual). this happens frequently. i think there may be a link in here somewhere the my car battery is draining while the car sits. something relating to my radio(so it doesn't get stolen), and security system are causing the no start interlock to kick in.

Passive alarm system malfunction. theft alarm led comes on while driving.there were reports of car dying while driving, see the link http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2003/chevrolet/malibu/electrical+system. consumers spend hundreds of dollars and great inconvenience not knowing why the cars does not start or stopped running.

I own a chevy malibu 2002. the problem is the anti-theft system. the anti theft system shuts down the fuel injectors and the car won't start. i have to put the key in the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes to reset the computer. sometimes this will take more than 1 attempt. this happens on a regular basis for no reason. there are thousands and thousands of dissatisfied customers who are currently experiencing this problem. also many after market parts claiming to disable the antitheft system to try to satisfy customers. i purchased this vehicle in october 2001 and have had this problem for years. i only wish i had found out about this site sooner to voice my concerns. please do some research. there should be a better way to fix this issue than to disable the system.

I had to get the ignition locking system fixed 2 times in the same year at $600.00 each time. my car would not start so i would get it towed then when it got to the auto place it would start right up. this happened 3 times before i finally had to bring it to the place i bought the car and have it put on the machine to find out what was wrong. then the same thing happened 13 mon. later and it was not covered under warranty because it was more than 12 mon. i called the recall place and they said there was not a recall on it but i still think it definitely is a recall. this car has cost me alot of $ in repairs. *dt

Without warning, car suddenly will not start. anti-theft system will activate when trying to start car. it appears that the ignition does not recognize the car key. seems it thinks someone is trying to still the car. this first happened in the summer of 2009. it just happened again on 3/7/2010. in both cases the car had to be towed to a repair shop. the first shop was an independent repair facility. they reset the computer that controls the ignition system. the second shop was the dealer. they reset the computer that controls the ignition system. then, they replaced the bcm unit and the ignition key cylinder. i've done some background checking on this type of problem. many, many owners of this make & model (chevy malibu) have had this same issue. *tr

2002 chevy malibu has a faulty passlock system that disables the vehicle about 25% of the time when a valid key is inserted into ignition. safety issue if person needs medical attention, if in dangerous area, or if car needs to be started and refuses to do so because of faulty part. i have found a workaround that has seemed to work for me. place key in ignition, turn to on position. open driver's side door and wait until warning chime comes on. then turn car on as normally. seems like the passlock system has a hard time registering if there is a key. anyway, this is simply unacceptable on gm's part and i sincerely believe a recall should be issued for this problem. *tr

The theft system of my 2002 chevrolet malibu periodically is triggered for unknown reasons. it happens fairly often up to several times a month - most recently twice today, 6 december 2009. to correct this issue i have to set my car in the on position for ten minutes while the system resets. this is very inconvenient (if i was on my way to an appointment or job) or could be quite dangerous &/or life threatening (trying to get family member to the er or trying to escape an attack of some kind). chevrolet needs to do an investigation & recall whatever is causing this fault in their cars. *tr

For the past few weeks, my car has had a problem starting up. i had someone look at it and he said there is a problem with the theft system. when i try to start the car, it will not do anything. i have to wait until the theft light goes off before the car even starts. i thought that seemed strange but after reading other complaints i see that i am not the only on having that problem. *tr

The passlock system on my 2002 model malibu has failed several times causing my daughter and grandchild to be stuck at different locations away from home. the system even failed during her driving one day which could have been a very bad situation for her as well as other drivers. luckily, she was able to control the car as it completely shut down. i took the car to chevrolet and they told me the fuse box had shorted out due to rain (?) as well as the ignition switch was screwed up. anyway, over the course of 1 year, i spent a total of approximately $1700.00 in so called repairs until i found out about the 10 minute trick. nevertheless, the 10 minute trick turned out to be a 1 hour trick just yesterday. and chevrolet won't fix the problem?!?!?! this is a nuisance and dangerous as well. *tr

Electrical system-anti-theft/passlocksystem. the situation arises with no prior warnings, i insert my original gm key in the ignition switch to start my 2002 chevrolet malibu and the electronic anti-theft system goes into theft mode (as if i am stealing my own car). the theft system light on the dash starts flashing and the car will not start. the engine turns over but will not start. i have to leave the car switched on for 10 minutes (while draining the battery) until the theft system light quits flashing and stays on steady. at that point i must turn the ignition switch to off and then try starting the car again. this has occurred about 6 times since i reached 55000 miles. the last time was last week and i am now at 76000 miles. dealer pretended that they have no idea what caused this and had not dealt with any other problems of this type with the chevy malibu at their dealership. i see after doing much research that this was a total lie on their part. they supposedly tried to recreate the problem, but could not. they told me they had to wait for it to happen again, at which point i could have it towed there and they quoted me $650+ to replace ignition assembly (what they considered the likely cause). car also makes outside horn noises randomly and the inside alarm chimes randomly. i've read all of the complaints on this, even one woman whose car just stopped while she was driving on the highway due to this antithefft system problem. this is an obvious defect needing recall and obviously dangerous on many levels. there are many complaints on auto complaint sites (ie., autoforum) and i can see complaints on this site as well. why aren't you doing anything about it?! please respond!!! *tr

I drove my 2002chevy malibu to work and when i got in to start it , the car would not start. i had to have it towed to a garage. it cost me a tow bill and $278 to have the anti-theft system reset. now i am reading that this may happen again and again as long as i own the car! there should be a recall for this to be fixed permanently. my daughter also has the same model and it has happened to her twice. *tr

My mother owns a 2002 chevrolet malibu that sometimes will not start because the theft deterrent system gets a false reading and shuts off power to the fuel pump. placing the ignition key in the on position for 10 minutes will usually reset the theft system. this problem has happened to us several times. i did an online search and found where many people have experienced this same problem. some have spent several hundred dollars trying to correct the problem. can gm be forced to correct this. now that we the people own a majority stake in the company, it seems a perfect time to have this corrected. you know that they knew about the passlock problem, but in their arrogance and greed, would not correct it. if you have any questions please call james mcdonald. also, if you want to see other peoples complains do a google search of chevrolet malibu theft deterrent system problem and you will see the numerous complaints. if this cannot be corrected with your intervention, i will never buy another general motors product. thank you for your time. *tr

Tried to start my 2002 chevy malibu ls and would not start. anti-theft system light was on. the failure seems to be the passlock to the anti-theft system. the computer can be reset but this does not fix the problem it is only a temporary fix. apparently there is not a fix for this problem at all. it will just keep happening as long as you own the car. i have been luck that it's only done this while parked. it is my understanding that the anti-theft system could kick in at anytime and shut off the car even while driving. this to me seems dangerous and should be a recall. *tr

I purchased a used 2002 chevy malibu in 2005. in 2006, i had to have the pass lock sensor replaced due to the car not starting. this is apparently a common issue in gm cars, i've since learned. there is something wrong with the theft deterrent system. about two months ago, the car would not start again. the fuel gauge read empty even though it wasn't. the body control module was replaced. today, i took my car through a car wash. while sitting the dash indicator lights all came on, but the car was still running. the lights stayed on and none of the dash gauges were working. i made it home, turned the car off, restarted it, same thing. i was advised to attempt to reset the pass lock sensor. this seems to have worked so far. i have been advised that it is most likely the pass lock sensor or bcm again. apparently, this is a super common issue in gm cars for the pass twelve years. in total for the two repairs already mentioned, i have spent about 1200 dollars. i strive to maintain my vehicle for safety purposes. it very frustrating to know that gm has been aware of this issue, yet has made no attempt to resolve it for car owners. *tr

My 2002 chevy malibu has been having problems since i bought it at about 104,000 miles but i am sure that it was having problems well before i bought it because of the low price i paid for it, but i needed a car badly. i have always had problems starting my car and usually would have to turn it on to make sure all the lights come on, not just the anti-theft light. if only the anti-theft light comes on, its guaranteed to not start. at exactly 111,111 miles my car would not start at all no matter how many times i took the key out and put it back in. it kept flashing the anti-theft at me! i replaced the idol speed motor and for some reason it started. a week later it wouldn't start again. i read about tricks online to get the car to start because this seems to be a prominent problem with 2002's. i finally got the car started. a few days later i was driving on a busy highway when i came to a stop light and my car just shut off. i was still able to use my breaks, thank god, but had to sit there in the middle of traffic trying to start my car for several minutes. i keep thinking what if this happens when my 2-year-old is with me? what if this happens in the dark and someone rear ends me because my lights go out? i have had the fuel pump checked, the fuel injectors, the idle speed motor replaced every time i replace something it works for a few days or weeks then it starts to act up again. the point is that the problem always comes back and it seems to get worst, and happens more frequently with every failure. the problem could be the ignition cylinder witch is what i am having fixed next, but i have acquaintances that have had the same problems that come back even after replacing the ignition cylinder. my biggest concern is having everything die again while i am driving because its not just a inconvenience anymore, it is a safety issue that chevy needs to address before there are deaths and or serious injuries. *tr

Passlock ii theft deterrent system not allowing car to start and sometimes shutting the engine off while driving. the problem started around 70,000 miles with the theft light once in awhile coming on and blinking on the dashboard and not allowing the car to start, unless you waited 10 minutes with the ignition key in the on position until the theft light went off. then around 80,000 miles almost every time you would try to start the car you would have to wait for the lights on the dash and the fuel pump to turn on before starting the car, which was most likely a result of the passlock ii resistors not registering in the ignition key tumbler. there was also a couple of times when the car completely shut off and once while trying to merge onto a major highway. after reading about how common the passlock ii problem was on some of the gm vehicles and how expensive it was to fix a problem that could possibly return anyway, we decided to just get another vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet malibu. when the contact turned the ignition, the vehicle failed to start due to the anti-theft device. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop several times and the mechanic changed an unspecified part. this did not correct the failure. the failure was diagnosed as the electrical panel, but the failure could not be corrected because it could cause other components in the electrical panel to fail. the vehicle is still at the repair shop. a report was filed with the manufacturer and the contact was informed that they would not be able to assist if the vehicle was not taken to a gmc dealer. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

I am the owner of a 2002 chevrolet malibu with just over 50,000 miles use. over the past 6 months the car has exhibited a failure to start. a little research shows that this is the result of a common failure of the gm passlock system. the temporary fix is to reset the system by turning the ignition key to the on position and waiting 10-15 minutes. needless to say, this is very annoying and inconvenient. at this point it doesn't represent an immediate safety issue, in that the ignition system isn't shutting down while the vehicle is moving. however, i am concerned that the inability to move the vehicle does represent a safety issue. my stepson uses this car to travel to work and to college. i don't want to have to worry about his safety if he can't start the car in an emergency situation, e.g., to avoid criminal activity. if this were a small thing to have repaired, i wouldn't complain so much, but my mechanic tells me it will cost nearly $500. as i said above, this problem is quite common--or so my internet research tells me. gm should recall this poorly designed mechanism. thank you. --ted kriner *tr

My car is a 2002 chevy malibu. i am experiencing turn signal failure and hazardous emergency light failure the turn signal works on occasion only. there are times when it does not work at all ( many occasions ). an average % of how often it works is about 5 %, the other 95 % of the time it doesn't work at all. my emergency lights won't come on sometimes. there is a clicking noise being heard within the car almost all of the time. the sound appears to be coming from the hazard emergency light switch. also, my remote keyless entry is not working. it won't unlock the car doors or the trunk. i have to press it at close range at least about 10 times maybe more before it will unlock the car doors or open the trunk. *nm

Car has failed to start on numerous occasions and no one has been able to tell us why. we have had to replace the head gasket, which had not fixed the problem. our wipers only work on high. our heat only works on number 4 and 5. while driving home on the freeway during rush hour with my baby daughter in the car, the car just decided to die on me. i had to try to get out of the passing lane, so that i could pull off of the road. my radio and heat still worked, but car would not restart. my oil and battery and cruise control lights were on (i had not even used the cruise control) and my car just would not start. it took me an hour to get my car to start again, now i am afraid to drive it any distance for fear of being stranded. *jb

I first purchased this malibu 2002 in feb 2002. nov 02 ( 9 mos later) i had to have my ignition switch replaced which was under warranty. around the same time my turn/hazard signal went out and i haven't had it replaced yet after 4yrs of having this car. if i want to use it i have to keep pressing the hazard button to make it come on. nov 2005 i tried to start my car, but it kept cutting off. my dad stated it was the fuel pump. i had the fuel pump, crank sensor and module replaced. my car still didn't start. finally my dad went under the steering wheel and pressed this black button (cut off switch) and that was the only way it would start. i have to travel 25 miles to work so i was tired of worrying about the car. i thought it was the theft system. i took my car to the dealer 11/29/2005 they had the car until 12/15/2005. i was told that it was my ignition switch, crank sensor and my alarm/automatic starter. i was out of $366.73 to the dealer and taking a cab to work at 5:30am for x7dy coasted$210.00. i was also out of money for a rental car for the last 7ys they had my car plus gas on both because they used all gas in my car. i have had x2 ignition switches put on my car, i have to change my tail/park/brake bulb seemingly every 6mos. i am only getting my hazard/turn signal replaced when nhtsa reviews it as being an defect. i am having a hard time with the speed of my car also on the e way. i have to put my foot to the floor in order to make it take off at 60mph. i have to put gas in my car every 3dys. i last changed my fuel filter 1yr ago and again having it replaced 1/1/06. my check engine light came on 1wk after i got my car out of the shop on 12/22 and it has been on since. my coolant light comes and goes off every now and then. i have had my coolant/fuel flushed. i had it winterized what's the problem. if we have 47-50 people complaining about the same thing why cant it get done. please respond and help us chevy owners asap/wf. *jb

About two weeks ago, i began to notice intermittent failure of the turn indicators on my 2002 chevrolet malibu. about 70 percent of the time, they function normally but they randomly fail and just as randomly begin working again. the problem seems unrelated to power on/off cycles of the turn indicator system or vehicle. likewise, road vibration intensity doesn't seem to have a direct impact on the condition. when the failure occurs, the four way hazard warning system still functions normally. the failure affects both sides of the vehicle. neither dashboard indicators nor turn indicator lamps function during the failure. the sound associated with the operation of the flasher unit is also missing during failures. i have replaced the flasher unit and the problem was unaffected. i reinstalled the original flasher. it is available for inspection.*jb

No incidents, crashes or injury's while in my possession. the 2002 chevy malibu i bought used in 2004 only had 11,000 miles on it. it was a government used car. several months after buying the car the blinkers stopped working and then began working again. they now work when they want to work. now, almost a year later at 41,000 miles the horn blows a short beep anytime. the car may be running or not, there may not be anyone even in the car. this has been going on for about a month and a half and now there is a beeping tone inside that i have not identified. it doesn't do it constantly but i notice it when i start the car. it is a short alert beep, kind of like an alarm. it beeps once, pause, and then about three times pause and then once more. just wondering if there were any recalls for this as the warranty is not in affect any longer. in addition to these there has been about three occasions where my car hestitated when starting kind of like the battery was drained. could this be from the horn blowing all day and night? have also replaced brakes more often than i thought i should.

In 2002, i bought a 2002 chevy malibu. since then it's been giving me a lot of problems. the first problem was the water found in both tail lights; this was under warranty. then there was water coming in the driver side window, the brakes, and the torque needing to be reprogrammed. then it was the headlights going out and i got them replaced at a walmart; mind you, since the 1st problem, none of this has been under warranty. now it's the airbag gone bad, cooling system gone bad, and the brakes again, along with a fuel pump. the calipers have to be replaced still, the airbag needs to be checked out, and the car is in the shop now to diagnose what is wrong within the fueling system that makes the car not start. oh! i almost forgot, i purchased a battery 2 weeks ago because that went out. i always stay on top of my service for the car. this car is 3 years old and i bought it new off the lot. it sucks!

Driving car and it would die. first occurance was under warranty. car taken to dealer. dealer said fuel pump was bad and replaced pump. same problem ocurred out of warranty. noticed that some of the gages and lights on dash also quit when this happened. i could hit the key and they would come back on, and the car would restart. dealt with this for about 2 yrs because the cost of a new switch was more than i could afford at the time.finnally dissassembled the ignition switch when problem got too bad. discovered that gm had not used the normal heavy wiper style contacts that most ignition switches have. they used a plastic cam that pushes pins that operate very light spring style contacts. i found that the contacts had arced and were not making good contact. used very fine emery cloth to clean contacts, reassembled switch, and problem was solved.car starts and runs fine for now, but as soon as contacts arc enough, problem will return. i have noticed that there are many many people who have the same problem and the dealership is telling them that the problem is in the security system. well its not. anyone who has a minor amount of mechanical ability can fix the problem in about an hour. be sure and consult a repair manual on the proper removal of the ignition switch from the dash. its not hard, but there is a trck to it.*ak

*tr

This is a continual problem with the anti-theft/passlock system of my 2002 chevy malibu. i am the second owner of the car. the previous owner had the car for 3 years and had similar problems, but he reported that one dealer was finally able to fix the problem. the car either selectively won't start, and the theft light comes on. i have to let the key sit in the ignition for 10 min, and then it usually starts. once the car was running fine, and the theft light came on and then the car just shut off on me after i had been driving for 40 minutes. it was very scary and could have potentially caused an accident. the dealers are giving me a run-around. they replaced the fuel pump and ignition switch, totaling over $1100, and the car is still having the same problems. then after talking to the previous owner, i discovered that he had the same 2 things replaced when he owned the car, only 3-4 years ago. i talked to the dealer, but they are giving me a hard time, and i don't trust them to fix the problem this time either, let alone free of charge. i also filed a complaint with chevy, but they do not seem to be very helpful. i have come across so many complaints of the same nature on the internet and from other friends with the same cars. i'm wondering why there has never been a recall. please help!!! i'm out of money for more repairs, and i just want to be able to drive my car without fear of it stopping or not starting on me. *tr

I bought a 2002 chevrolet malibu on august 10, 2004. the mileage was 45,281. since that time i have had 2 problems with my vehicle. 1.gm dex-cool/intake manifold gasket. 2.anti-theft light comes on. after car has been stopped, the car will not restart again. with regard to item number 1 above, i understand there is a class action lawsuit pending. with regard to item number 2 above, these are the circumstances concerning my problems associated with the anti theft system. from august to october 2006 i had to tow my vehicle to the chevrolet dealership to address the problem of my car not starting. it was towed 4 times, the first 3 times and all the dealership said was that the battery needed to be charged. on the last time, october 13, 2006 the dealership said their ?educated guess? was the need to change the starter switch and ignition lock cylinder for which they charged me for a starter switch - $96.15, an ignition lock cylinder - $154.79, recode the lock cylinder - $15.00, and $46.00 to correct the pass lock sensor data, plus a $10.00 environmental disposal fee. my son looked on the internet to see if anyone else has had similar problems with their same model car. it appears quite a few owners have had similar problems. the anti-theft problem fix was to allow the car to sit for 10 minutes, and then try to start the vehicle again, and it worked, sometimes after 2-3 attempts. the dealership had also said to try the same fix procedure, it might work. it appears that general motors knows about this two problem, and is only addressing the gm dex cool intake manifold gasket. general motors should recall to fix both problems at no charge to the owner. it's only a matter of time before either of these two items becomes a safety issue and causes a loss of life or limb. the current mileage is 55,340. *tr

The situation arises with no prior warnings, i insert my original gm key in the ignition switch to start my 2002 chevrolet malibu and the electronic anti-theft system goes into theft mode (as if i am stealing my own car). the theft system light on the dash starts flashing and the car will not start. the engine turns over but will not start. i have to leave the car switched on for 10 minutes (while draining the battery) until the theft system light quits flashing and stays on steady. at that point i must turn the ignition switch to off and then try starting the car again. to date it always starts after the 10-minute delay and retry. the problem appears to be random in nature and has happened to me as often as three (3) times in one day. it has made me late for work, appointments and stranded at the gas pump (inconveniencing others). i am fortunate that i haven't had any dire emergencies (yet) in which the car has left me stalled. i have not tried to have it repaired as i cannot afford the cost and it is my understanding from others' experiences that it will eventually happen with the new parts. this is a general motors defective system and a poor design that has been unleashed on the buying public. apparently general motors has refused to acknowledge the problem and take responsibility for their faulty engineering. meanwhile many, many people like myself have unknowingly purchased general motors vehicles with these systems and continue to have to live with the inconvenience and potentially dangerous results of their poor engineering. *tr

I own a 2002 chevy malibu. after much research online as well as multiple visits to my mechanic, i now realize that the problem i am encountering is a common one for my vehicle. the problem is with the theft system or passlock. my car will fail to start because the passlock sensor detects what it thinks is an improper key. a 10 minute delay will ensue where i can not start my car at all during this time. this has happened frequently for the past year and a half. within the last month is has happened up to 3 times a day! i find it completely unacceptable that chevrolet has not recalled the car for this error. i can no longer run the risk of getting stuck in a bad situation/area and my car failing me. *tr

First incident of leaking happened after dealership worked on car. arrived home coolant poured out on ground towed back. dealership said reservoir cap seal. 10/2006 or 11/2006, picking up at school and smelled not engine. parked saw coolant on ground. no engine light on but needle was past middle. family brought coolant filled it up and went 5 blocks to dealership. they said nothing was wrong. yesterday, 1/9/2007 car overheated in the school line. added coolant. i brought it to a non dealership radiator shop owner thinks intake manifold gasket leaking. car at dealership. i really don't know what the real problem is but because my warranty expired feel dealership will tell me it is a new problem from the first event so i will be responsible. at least two rotors replaced on the front driver's wheel & 5 sets of pads. reported to gm they claim it is the way i drive! a non dealership tire company had the pads replaced with a good brand. 1 1/2 years since i had to have pads. problem with the right front passenger door locks. car is running and the driver gets out leaving car on and then the passenger turns off the car and gets out, locks car, the radio stays on. i went inside the store and came out and the radio was still playing. when you unlock the car but enter only the passenger front door and then close it and walk away, the car locks itself. happened several times. i had not placed the keys on the seat of the car and shut the door or i would have been locked out. i reported this but no one seemed to care. radio was replaced for left button paint (not sure if it is paint or cover on button) rubs off. ignition switch was replaced. fuel pump replaced.. i transport grandchildren and i need a safe car. *jb

The anti-theft device was triggered for no apparent reason, causing the engine to turn over but not start. this is the second time this has happened in the last six months. last time i was charged about $65 to re-set the immobilizer. this time (a different mechanic) i was charged $570 to replace the key and ignition cylinder, after he was unable to re-set the immobilizer. i see that this is a common issue with this vehicle. when will a recall be imposed? the car has only about 55,000 miles on it. *nm

Turn signal failures, emergency signal failure & theft system my car's signals work off and on. when i go to use my turn signal sometimes it does not work sometimes it does. what i usually have to do is activate the turn signal and then hold down the emergency hazard button which may or may not activate my signal to work. if i can not get this to work then i am unable to use my signals at all. the theft system activates on the car causing the car not to start until i allow it to sit for 10 minutes to correct its self. sometimes the car will not restart after the 10 minutes that the manual says to wait. my car is a 2002 chevrolet malibu. *nm

Purchased this 2002 malibu used from local chevy dealer. first incident, after a brief stop at a gas station the car wouldn't restart. turned over but no fire. had it towed to a repair shop who informed me that the theft-deterrent system was stopping the car from starting. they explained that only a dealer can process or recycle this problem. they did a temporary recycle of the system and the car started back up. i planned to take the car to the dealer within the next couple of weeks to follow up, but then it happened again, at a store, cranked no fire, theft light flashing, same exact symptoms. i was told at the repair shop that this is a chronic problem with these models. they charged me $70.00 for the diagnostic time spent, and i was thankful that the car would at least start. now it's stuck in a parking lot across town and i can't even get it towed (no tow coverage). my fear is this happening repeatedly. first event was on june 19, second on june 30. i am curious about all the different tricks i am hearing about to bypass the system and get the car to start. one said i should turn the steering wheel quickly side to side while applying my foot to the accelerator, and turn the ignition, another said to try switching keys, (which i did try but it didn't work). any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! if i could get it to start then i could at least get it to the dealer - i am a single mom, very broke, no resources to fall back on for this repeat event so soon. i haven't even mentioned the constant burned out brake lights- i replace the bulbs and they blow within a couple of days...no visible electrical line damage, either...*nm

My 2002 chevy malibu ls would not start and needed towed home. this is the first time this has happened and seems to happen regularly to other malibu owners with no recall from gm yet. i have a young child and wife that drive use the car mostly and am worried of their safety if this would happen on a highway. i have also had problems with the windshield wipers quitting during a rainstorm. i contacted gm and i was told there was no recall and all repairs would be out of pocket even though this is a safety issue. the vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it. *nm

I own a used 2002 chevy malibu, purchased in june 2005. for the last three weeks, once a week the anti theft device system has engaged not allowing me to start the car. the 1st time it happened i had it towed to the garage and they could not find the problem. the second two times this occurred i had to leave the key in the on position for thirty minutes then have some one jump start the car. thus making me late to work on both occasions. i went on line to yahoo type in anti theft system chevy and found five pages of the same complaint from other malibu owners one woman was driving on the highway when it happened and the car just stopped in traffic she could have been killed. what we all want to know is why this matter has not been brought to the publics attention and recalled by the manufactured. would you please look into this matter and reply to either my e-mail or my home address. thank you very much. wendie price *nm

*jb

 1. normal usage of car 2. anti theft system engages arbitrarily causing car not to start for 10 minutes until you do a reset procedure. notified it is a problem with the ignition lock cylinder. it seems this is a widespread defect and the repair is expensive. also, reports show the new part will have the same problem. it is a fundamental defect. 3. nothing, to expensive, should be covered as a defect. *tr

While placing the key inside the ignition switch vehicle would start. ut when consumer turn the vehicle off and attempted to remove the key it would not come out. when the vehicle was turned off and the key was cstuck in the ignition consumer could shift from park to reverse without applying the brakes. consumer took the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic maintained that the problem could not be duplicated with the key's failure to come out of the ignition switch. but the shifting from park to reverse was duplicated and repaired. *ak the key won't come out of the ignition. when the key is stuck in the ignition the car will come out of park without the consumers foot on the brake. *tc

The radio sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. after 7 trips, it was determined the problem was the amplifier. the radio worked for about a year and now is doing the same thing again. also, the turn signals work when they feel like it. i had the dealer check and they said i needed a new switch. i did not get one as yet, but see where other owners are having the same issue. i have not received a recall, nor did the dealer inform me of the issue. i initially had trouble with the outside mirrors but they did remedy that. i get shocked (electrically) many times when i exit the car as do some of my passengers.*ak
