I have had intermittent electrical problems almost since buying the car in 2004. in 2010 i experienced a scary new twist: my blinkers won't always work. it happened maybe three times total over the next 12-18 months, but it is happening again, and i am now doing much more around-town driving. i have read other complaints where some owners have been able to get the blinkers working again by toggling the hazard lights, but this is not the case with my car. i turn the vehicle on and the blinkers will work the first time i use them, then not again for the rest of my trip (or in some cases, the rest of the day).

My 2002 chevy malibu has been having problems since i bought it at about 104,000 miles but i am sure that it was having problems well before i bought it because of the low price i paid for it, but i needed a car badly. i have always had problems starting my car and usually would have to turn it on to make sure all the lights come on, not just the anti-theft light. if only the anti-theft light comes on, its guaranteed to not start. at exactly 111,111 miles my car would not start at all no matter how many times i took the key out and put it back in. it kept flashing the anti-theft at me! i replaced the idol speed motor and for some reason it started. a week later it wouldn't start again. i read about tricks online to get the car to start because this seems to be a prominent problem with 2002's. i finally got the car started. a few days later i was driving on a busy highway when i came to a stop light and my car just shut off. i was still able to use my breaks, thank god, but had to sit there in the middle of traffic trying to start my car for several minutes. i keep thinking what if this happens when my 2-year-old is with me? what if this happens in the dark and someone rear ends me because my lights go out? i have had the fuel pump checked, the fuel injectors, the idle speed motor replaced every time i replace something it works for a few days or weeks then it starts to act up again. the point is that the problem always comes back and it seems to get worst, and happens more frequently with every failure. the problem could be the ignition cylinder witch is what i am having fixed next, but i have acquaintances that have had the same problems that come back even after replacing the ignition cylinder. my biggest concern is having everything die again while i am driving because its not just a inconvenience anymore, it is a safety issue that chevy needs to address before there are deaths and or serious injuries. *tr

Low coolant light kept coming on. had this checked during an oil change and oil was found in the coolant. intake manifold gasket was replaced for the 2nd time. the intake manifold gasket was previously replaced 2 1/2 years ago. starting in the spring/summer of 2008 started having problems with the turn signals only working part of the time. this was checked at a dealership and i was told that since the signals seemed to work fine for them and the problem couldn't be reproduced they weren't able to determine what was wrong to be able to fix it. the problem continues. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown speed, the turn signals failed sporadically. as a consequence, the contact was unable to notify other drivers of his intention to turn the vehicle, which increased the risk of a crash. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in the campaign issued by gm. the turn signals would have to be repaired at the cost of $400. the contact has not had the vehicle repaired. the vin and nhtsa campaign id number were unknown. the failure mileage was 67,000 and current mileage was 87,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet malibu. while driving less than 70 mph, the exterior brake lights on the vehicle continued to illuminate even when the brake pedal was not depressed. the contact was concerned that the other drivers would swerve around her and assume that she was braking, when in reality, she would be in acceleration or drive mode. the dealer replaced the ecm and the sensor approximately three times. the vehicle has been at the dealer at least twice a month for one year. the repairs have not corrected the failure. the failure and current mileages were less than 40,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet malibu. while leaving the highway at an unknown speed, the contact noticed that the turn signals failed. the failure has occurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not determine the cause of the intermittent failure. the dealer replaced the upper and lower head gasket seal, but the failure was not corrected. the rack and pinion failed and was replaced in 2006 and again in october of 2008. the failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage was 52,300.

I bought a 2002 chevy malibu from a car dealership. once i drove off the lot the blinkers stopped working for me, they were working during the test drive. after trying to figure out what was going on i found that the problem was connected with the emergency lights box. whenever it was in a certain position the blinkers would work otherwise they did not. i tried fixing it with some rubberbands and duct tape- for some reason that worked for awhile but now it's acting up again! help! *tr

Turn signals worked fine until mid 2007, then they started working intermittently. i have to fiddle with the hazard button to get them to work, then they only work for a short period of time before i have to fiddle with the hazard button again. this failure occurs on a daily basis. the consequences are that it is very unsafe! nothing has been done to correct the problem, i am trying to wait for a recall to fix this issue. if that doesn't come soon, i will have to repair it myself at my cost! *tr

2002 malibu turn signal work when they want. have to hit dash by hazard lights to make them work. haven;t had a accident yet ,but am scared to drive my car. bought the car new from the dealership. have never received any recall notices. horn also has a mind of it's own. only have 45,000 miles on my car. i used to love it but now i am afraid of having a wreck and either dying or killing someone else. chevy needs to recall all the problem cars and not just a few. *tr

I own a 2002 chevy malibu and i am experiencing an intermittent clicking noise coming from somewhere in the dash. i took it to the dealership and their diagnosis was small intermittent voltage bleed from the turn signal switch. needs the switch replaced. although i referred the to the defect found by the odi, gm refused to replace the switch at no cost because their internal policy is that they will only replace the hazard switch. when i showed that the report listed the components as the hazard switch and the turn signal switch. they still declined. they stated that although the two exhibit the same symptoms, their policy states they only cover the hazard switch alone. they recommended replacing the turn signal switch at my cost. then if the problem persists, which it may, then replace the hazard switch. which at that point, i would be eligible to replace the hazard switch at no cost. *tr

I have a 2002 chevy malibu. it has the turn signal/flasher problem that was covered in pe05055. the dealer installed the new flasher per the service letter but this did not fix the problem. dealer wants $94 to diagnose the real problem plus possibly hundreds to fix it. chevy customer service will not do anything until i pay for the diagnosis, even then they will not give any assurances. a quick internet search indicates that many others have had similar experiences. i think that you closed your investigation prematurely. *tr

The seal on the back lights gets bad and allows moisture to get in and short out the brake, turn signal and back up lights. repairs are over $200 and they cannot guarantee it will not happen when the lighting housing is replaced. this should be a recall, because living near atlanta, brake lights and turn signals are very important. i never know when they are working. this is very dangerous. come on gm, make drivers of your vehicles safe!!!!! *tr

My car is a 2002 chevy malibu. i am experiencing turn signal failure and hazardous emergency light failure the turn signal works on occasion only. there are times when it does not work at all ( many occasions ). an average % of how often it works is about 5 %, the other 95 % of the time it doesn't work at all. my emergency lights won't come on sometimes. there is a clicking noise being heard within the car almost all of the time. the sound appears to be coming from the hazard emergency light switch. also, my remote keyless entry is not working. it won't unlock the car doors or the trunk. i have to press it at close range at least about 10 times maybe more before it will unlock the car doors or open the trunk. *nm

Turn signal failures, emergency signal failure & theft system my car's signals work off and on. when i go to use my turn signal sometimes it does not work sometimes it does. what i usually have to do is activate the turn signal and then hold down the emergency hazard button which may or may not activate my signal to work. if i can not get this to work then i am unable to use my signals at all. the theft system activates on the car causing the car not to start until i allow it to sit for 10 minutes to correct its self. sometimes the car will not restart after the 10 minutes that the manual says to wait. my car is a 2002 chevrolet malibu. *nm

In 2002, i bought a 2002 chevy malibu. since then it's been giving me a lot of problems. the first problem was the water found in both tail lights; this was under warranty. then there was water coming in the driver side window, the brakes, and the torque needing to be reprogrammed. then it was the headlights going out and i got them replaced at a walmart; mind you, since the 1st problem, none of this has been under warranty. now it's the airbag gone bad, cooling system gone bad, and the brakes again, along with a fuel pump. the calipers have to be replaced still, the airbag needs to be checked out, and the car is in the shop now to diagnose what is wrong within the fueling system that makes the car not start. oh! i almost forgot, i purchased a battery 2 weeks ago because that went out. i always stay on top of my service for the car. this car is 3 years old and i bought it new off the lot. it sucks!

I bought my chevrolet 2002 malibu brand new and have owned it for three years, just two months ago it started having intermittent turn signal problems. i have tried little things like manually using turn signals and turning them off prior to turn completion, restarting the car, and using my hazzard lights to trigger the turn signals to work. sometimes these things will work momentarily, other times they have no effect. also i am noticing my hazard lights do not always work, and sometimes they will interrupt my turn signal from working and other times my turn signal will cause the hazard lights to turn off! this has almost caused several accidents for me, is a very dangerous situation. the dealership will not help me, my car is just past the warranty period and they want to test it for a rather large fee. although my research on this problem has told me that gm has not fixed the problem in 2002, but possibly in 2001, and 2000 models. i am very disappointed, and will not own a chevy again.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - BRAKE LIGHTS - SWITCH
11/26/200562492602/26/2002
I first purchased this malibu 2002 in feb 2002. nov 02 ( 9 mos later) i had to have my ignition switch replaced which was under warranty. around the same time my turn/hazard signal went out and i haven't had it replaced yet after 4yrs of having this car. if i want to use it i have to keep pressing the hazard button to make it come on. nov 2005 i tried to start my car, but it kept cutting off. my dad stated it was the fuel pump. i had the fuel pump, crank sensor and module replaced. my car still didn't start. finally my dad went under the steering wheel and pressed this black button (cut off switch) and that was the only way it would start. i have to travel 25 miles to work so i was tired of worrying about the car. i thought it was the theft system. i took my car to the dealer 11/29/2005 they had the car until 12/15/2005. i was told that it was my ignition switch, crank sensor and my alarm/automatic starter. i was out of $366.73 to the dealer and taking a cab to work at 5:30am for x7dy coasted$210.00. i was also out of money for a rental car for the last 7ys they had my car plus gas on both because they used all gas in my car. i have had x2 ignition switches put on my car, i have to change my tail/park/brake bulb seemingly every 6mos. i am only getting my hazard/turn signal replaced when nhtsa reviews it as being an defect. i am having a hard time with the speed of my car also on the e way. i have to put my foot to the floor in order to make it take off at 60mph. i have to put gas in my car every 3dys. i last changed my fuel filter 1yr ago and again having it replaced 1/1/06. my check engine light came on 1wk after i got my car out of the shop on 12/22 and it has been on since. my coolant light comes and goes off every now and then. i have had my coolant/fuel flushed. i had it winterized what's the problem. if we have 47-50 people complaining about the same thing why cant it get done. please respond and help us chevy owners asap/wf. *jb

Dt: the vehicle is a 2002 chevrolet malibu, the turn signals and the hazard lights only work about 25 percent of the time. this problem started after 32,000 miles and on around the first of april of 2005. sometimes when flipping on the lights they will work, then go off without warning. at times after flipping the lights on they will not come on and then after driving further they will all of a sudden turn on. the lights would have to be in the on position before it will come on. the problem occurs in any type of weather and under any driving conditions. the consumer contacted gm and they told her to get a diagnostic test ran on the vehicle, and afterwards that they would get in contact with the dealer and get some kind of payment figured out. the consumer has not contacted the dealership as of now. the consumer states that she knows that it is the same problem they are having with the 2000 & 2001, and those models were recalled. *ak

My blinkers on my chevy malibu 2002 work intermittently. this is a problem because i need to turn the blinker to the left to turn on my car as a safety procedure installed by the producer. it is also a problem because when i drive i have to change lanes and even though i turn my blinkers on they do not work so i am cutting people off all the time. i tried taking it to the gm dealership but they told me there was no recall for that kind of problem. it is getting very annoying and today i had to wait about 10 minutes to turn my car on when i was trying to get some money from the atm. it is annoying because if the left blinker does not turn on and i start my car it does not start and the horn sounds. people were looking at me funny because the horn sounded like 30 times. *jb

On july 28 2006 my wife and i purchased a 2002 chevy malibu. we drove the vehicle home, with the a/c running, and everything was fine. the vehicle sat over night in our garage, and the next morning my wife drove the car to work. as soon as she got to work she called me saying the turn signals quit working. she attempted to use the hazard lights, and they would not work either. we called the auto dealership where the car was purchased. they had us bring the car to them. after driving my van for 45 minutes, with no working a/c, i arrived at her place of employment. i took the car to the dealer, and they kept it over night. the next morning they called and said the car was ready for pickup. i again drove 45 minutes in 100 degree temperature to pickup the car. everything was fine. the technician said it was the computer needed to be reset. so i again drove the car back home. this time with no a/c. when i arrived at the turn to my street i moved the turn indication lever down for a left hand turn. nothing happened. the turn signals did not work again. a large truck was behind me and almost slammed into the rear of the vehicle. i made the turn, only to be pulled over by a police officer. the officer asked why i did not use my signal. i explained to him the turn signals quit working again. the officer did not cite me, but told me if it was not corrected i would face a citation the next time. i drove the car back to the house, and did some investigation of my own on the internet. i have read over 300 different reports about this happening to other 2002 malibu owners. the turn lights and hazard indicator button have not worked correctly since. this car has been in the shop twice since this has happened. chevrolet did a recall on the 2001 model for the same problem. it appears the soldering of the circuit in the hazard indicator button on the 2001 model was the problem. i have not heard of or found a recall for the 2002 model. *jb

*jb

About two weeks ago, i began to notice intermittent failure of the turn indicators on my 2002 chevrolet malibu. about 70 percent of the time, they function normally but they randomly fail and just as randomly begin working again. the problem seems unrelated to power on/off cycles of the turn indicator system or vehicle. likewise, road vibration intensity doesn't seem to have a direct impact on the condition. when the failure occurs, the four way hazard warning system still functions normally. the failure affects both sides of the vehicle. neither dashboard indicators nor turn indicator lamps function during the failure. the sound associated with the operation of the flasher unit is also missing during failures. i have replaced the flasher unit and the problem was unaffected. i reinstalled the original flasher. it is available for inspection.*jb

I own an '02 chevy malibu (since 2/28/02). i had the same hazard switch problem w/my '02 malibu that the '00 & '01 model years had, and i had to pay for its replacement (roughly $130). i had no turn signals or hazard blinkers until it was replaced. gibson chevy of south holland, il did the replacement (it's in their repair system). my car presently has a little over 45k miles. gm should reimburse me for the money i was forced to pay, given the history of this defect with prior model years and the fact this situation has not seemingly been replaced with the '02 model year, either. i got no notification of a problem with this switch or a recall on it, either. i have had to have a modulator replaced last week (10/5/05) which affects the blower motor speeds in my vehicle's ventilation system ($152.00). at speeds 1, 2 and 3, the blower motor wouldn't work at all. each speed starting with the lowest to the higher speeds was going out-the only speeds working were #4, #5 & defrost. i was forced to have this replaced or i wouldn't be able to use the vents or defroster or the blower itself (& the defroster), would not work at all. this repair was done at brach auto repair (103rd & western ave., chicago il -- this repair detail is in their system). brach auto also replaced some parts in my fuel injection system (it was malfunctioning/about to go out). the amt i paid for this is also in their system. at that time, tom beaulieu informed me that gm has distributed a tsb re: this situation (which i was not informed of until i took my car in for the modulator repair), & how i must run my car w/ only shell or bp's 93 octane gasoline (even though the owner's manual states it should/can run on 87 octane). now, due to a poor fuel injector design, running anything less than 93 octane in my '02 malibu will result in more costly repairs. (3 separate failures / 3 separate parts on the same car). i want gm to reimburse me for the money i've spent for these repairs.*jb

At approximately 81,000 miles we noticed that occasionally the signals would not work. it was very sporadic in nature at first. however, over the course of the next 3,000 miles we have noticed that it is happening more frequently. when this was mentioned to the dealership representative at the 81,000 mile service we were told that the car had to be there when it was not working properly. naturally, on the service date the signals were working. some days the signals work and some days they don't. we have noticed the frequency of failure is more during damp, humid or rainy weather. the failure can be as short as five minutes or as long as one hour. we will be taking our vehicle in for the 84,000 mile service within the next few days and we will be showing them the information regarding your organizations investigation into the matter. we are very concerned that during one of these failures an accident will occur. *nm

I drive a 2002 chevrolet malibu. my turn signals work intermittently. this is a potentially dangerous problem not being able to inform other drivers, pedestrians, etc of intentions to turn. i have been informed to replace the hazard switch. researching online i find that the 2000 and 2001 models have a similar problem and a recall has been initiated to replace a defective switch. it appears from online forums that many other drivers are experiencing the same problem with their 2002 malibus. i wonder if the same defective switch was utilized on the 2002 model since the same problem exists. the recall should be extended to include the 2002 malibu model as well.*jb

Turn signals stop working (or won't work at all after first starting the car). this started happening the end of july and happens numerous times every time i drive the car. so far, activating/deactivating the hazard switch while keeping the turn signals on has eventually restored their use. i commute 50 miles each way to work every day, most of it on i-85 & 285 in atlanta. this is an incredibly dangerous situation that is obviously caused by a pervasive problem since there are numerous reports of this same failure. my mechanic has replaced my turn signal switch twice and has been assured by his parts source that this (3rd) time he will be provided a switch without the defect. so far i have paid $304.98 and should be reimbursed by gm. *jb

2002 chevrolet malibu turn signal works intermittently. my daughter drives this car and was involved in a minor accident in december 2004. she was trying to merge left in heavy traffic when a car just behind her ,and two lanes to the left, went for the same spot. because the turn signal failed, the driver in the other lane did not know she was trying to merge and proceeded into the spot. my daughter had to swerve back into her lane to avoid the other car , and could not avoid rear-ending the vehicle ahead where traffic had suddenly stopped. i recently took this car to the dealer, who could find nothing wrong. a quick internet search reveals that this is a common problem, and in fact the previous two model years were recalled for this same problem, which is related to a bad hazard switch. i fiddled with the switch and found that tapping the switch causes the signals to malfunction. although we didn't get this checked out until after the accident, i believe the accicent would have been avoided if the signals had been working, and i am really annoyed that the dealership seemed so ignorant of this well documented problem. fortunately no one was injured, but they easily could have been. *ak

In 2002, i bought a 2002 chevy malibu. since then it's been giving me a lot of problems. the first problem was the water found in both tail lights; this was under warranty. then there was water coming in the driver side window, the brakes, and the torque needing to be reprogrammed. then it was the headlights going out and i got them replaced at a walmart; mind you, since the 1st problem, none of this has been under warranty. now it's the airbag gone bad, cooling system gone bad, and the brakes again, along with a fuel pump. the calipers have to be replaced still, the airbag needs to be checked out, and the car is in the shop now to diagnose what is wrong within the fueling system that makes the car not start. oh! i almost forgot, i purchased a battery 2 weeks ago because that went out. i always stay on top of my service for the car. this car is 3 years old and i bought it new off the lot. it sucks!

Malibu 2002 turn signals and turn signal indicator do not work and will come on every once in awhile. have seen many other complaints of this but chevy has not recalled the 2002 model. this is very dangerous if you are trying to merge onto the freeway or just around town. do not want to take car in and spend hundreds of dollars if the problem can not be corrected like i've seen so many people say they have tried to do. *jb

The turn signals on my 2002 malibu fail to work on an intermittent basis. the problem first appeared about two days ago (early-october). the signals have failed twice during that time the dash indicators do not light up when i signal both right and left. i have less than 45k miles on the vehicle. if i move the dimmer switch back and forth, the signals will begin to work again. *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet, turn signals are working improperly. consumer can hear the turn signal, like it is blinking, but sometimes it will not light up on the inside. if it does not light up on the inside then it is not lighting up from the outside. the bulbs have been changed, and this was not the problem. a couple of contact's friends own chevrolet cars and at one point and time this happened to them as well. the problem recurred, so she is going to have to take the vehicle to dealer for repairs. aof months ago the problem did not occur as often as currently. *ak *tt

*ak

On 06-12-2005 my blinkers started working intermittantly. they may not work for a few minutes or for longer periods of time and with no warning. they don't work right away even if you restart the vehicle. i've saw this was a common problem with previous models. this is not a problem to be over looked especially if we travel. it is a danger in high traffic driving.

*ak

Turning signal don't work and hazard lights don't work. can't rely on them in traffic. i had them on and was on the freeway and they went out as i was trying to change lanes. i am told the hazard switch is bad and will cost 100$ to fix. i notice on your web site that most of the complaints on this make, model, and year are the turning signals and hazard lights. i would like to know why there is no recall on something that is needed for safe driving. and if you can please push a recall for the safety of us drivers. thank you

My turn signals work whenever they feel like it. this has been going on for about 8 months now and it seems to be getting worse. sometimes you can hear the turn signal but the light is not actually on. also, i have had to replace my rotors on the car three times all ready and the car is not even three years old yet. i am quite upset because between the turn signals and the brakes i am at a high risk for an accident. i have a three year old daughter and everyday i get in the car and drive with her i am putting both of our lives at risks. i can't believe that it is three years and yet there has been no recall on either of these potentially life endangering issues when there has been problems with at least one of these issues on previous models. what is wrong with this picture?? *jb
