The breaks on my 2003 malibu sedan seem to not be as responsive as other vehicles i have owned. you have to press the breaks harder than normal to bring the car to a stop. this is a major issue with the malibu's and as i do more research, i have found numerous people that have had to replace breaks many times with similar results. *la

I bought my malibu new in september 2003. in january 2005, i began to notice the car shuddering while braking, i took the car in and they machined both rotors, i took it in again on february 8th because the brakes were making a chatter and clank sound, they told me the calipers needed to be lubricated, i brought it back on february 18 for the lubrication. next i took the car in for a oil change on march 29th and asked the technician to check the brakes and was told they were fine. on july 1st 05 i took the car in again because of a brake squeal and found the retaining bolt /pin on the left front caliper was missing. it was replaced as well as the bolt/pin on the upper bolt/pin due to the integrity of the original bolt/pin. on september 30th 05 i took the car in again for brake noise, and was told that both rotors were rusted, both rotors were turned and cleaned at that time. on october 12th 05 which was only 8 days later i took the car back again because the car was still making a grinding noise. when inspected the front rotors were again found to be rusty, pitted and worn, this time they replaced both the rotors and the brake pads. i took the car in on november 23rd 05 for recommended 15 max service which included a rear brake adjustment, i asked them to check the front brakes again, because they were still squeaking and they said they were fine. may 25th,06 i took the car in again for brake noise, they first told me the calipers again needed to be lubricated , but then came back and said they needed to be replaced. now it is july of 06 and i am still having problems with the brakes. also on july 5th, 06 i had to take the car in because the a/c and the recirculation mode stopped working, they replaced a bad hvac control module. *nm

Brakes (rotors and front pads) keep needing to be replace. first at 14,000 miles and then again at 28,000 miles. the first time they were replaced under the 36,000 mile warranty, but the second time the dealer refused to do it under the warranty and wanted $500 for job. dealer first said the rear brakes were not adjusted but wouldn't blame the self adjusters that should keep them adjusted. then they said that it was my driving habits, refusing to refer to all the other complaints about malibu's brakes and the fact that none of my other cars have ever had brakes were out so soon. now they say it is normal for malibu brakes to wear out after 14,000 miles and again they won't cover them under warranty. brakes do not wear out after 14,000 miles. *jb

Chevrolet 2003 malibu - the car was leased in march 2003. the brakes were failing and the car was taken back to the dealer. they could not detect any problems since no lights came on in the car. the problem occurrence is unpredictable. brakes become very hard and car doesn't stop, steering wheel vibrates, car does not accelerate, consumes a lot of gas. problem detected was brake pedal remained down even when it wasn't being used. the car was brought back to the dealer three times before the defect was detected by the service manager. the car was reportedly repaired (readjusted switch for proper release of brake, replaced ft pads and rotors due to excess heat on ft brakes), but after a week, the problem represented itself. the car is now (8/21/03) at the dealer for repair (4th time it goes in). the manufacturer customer service is giving me a difficult time admitting that the car has a serious defect. they are trying to convince me that the symptoms the car presents may not signify that the problem is the same. i totally disagree because, it is the same problem. my husband and i were almost killed on the nj turnpike due to this problem. i have asked them to take back the car but i have had little success. i am hoping that this complaint will spark an investigation. the dealer mentioned that this exact problem was found on the avalanche models.*ak

On 5/24/05 i purchased a 2003 chevy malibu from suburban chevy. from the moment i test drove it there were issues with brake noise from the car's front tires. i also noticed that the pedal was very soft when the brakes were applied. on my first visit i was informed by the technician that it was brake rust from sitting in the lot and that it would burn off in a couple of days. a week later, i returned with the same noise and a pulsating steering wheel when the brakes were applied. this time another technician informed me that the rotors were incorrectly machined and that they would fix the problem. he also informed me that because the brakes were partially metallic, i would experience some noise. what he didn't tell me was that i would still experience the soft pedal and pulsating steering at slower speeds. to date the problem persists.
