Consequence Summary | Unexpected abs activiation could increase stopping distance up to about 11 feet dpending on the grade of the road, increasing the risk of a crash.

Purchased a 2004 chevrolet malibu in dec. 03 - on feb. 09, 2004 i was in stop and go traffic on the baltimore beltway during morning rush hour. while going only about 7 miles per hour, i applied my brakes to stop and my car would not brake. i ended up running into the suv in front of my vehicle. no damage to the suv, however the front end damage to my malibu was $3500.00. (after poking around on the internet i found out that the malibu received the poorest rating on a low speed front end impact crash test) it really doesn't look like $3500 worth of damages. needless to say i was floored when i received the news. anyway, about three weeks ago i received a recall letter in the mail stating that my abs sysyem needed to be reprogrammed. it also stated in the letter exactly what happened to me on feb 9, 2004 when my car did not brake. i am 100% certain that this is what caused my accident. i phoned gm and took my car into the dealer. they inspected my vehicle and reprogrammed my braking system. a representative from gm called me earlier this week. he stated that they found no problems with the brakes in my 04 malibu. (so why the recall and why did they reprogram the abs?) he also went on to say that gm would not be held liable for any damages sustained from this collision. i disagree! i feel that general motors should be held liable for my damages. *ak

I was driving the chevy malibu when a car behind me about rear ende me. i stopped and they told me that i had a break light out. i tried replacing bulbs and the whole assembly and nothing worked. i took the pig tail out of the passenger light off and noticed that the prongs for the lights was corroded. i bought a new one but the pig tail is still ruined. ( the wiring got wet in a sealed unit.) it got so wet that it started to melt the outside lens cover. it is a fire hazzard and an accident hazzard.

This car is terrible. not only did my brakes not work which made my car crash through the front of my house the steering has been replaced twice and the problem still exists. the electrical system has major problems. the blinker burned a hole through the lens cover and makes the horn, doors and lights not work. i have contacted gm several times over the last 5 years and they don't care because the warranty is out. then you read how many people have the same problems. they got their bailout how about a bailout for the people who bought gm products. there seems to be no help for the consumer. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet malibu was parked legally in front of my house. the street was covered with black ice. the driver of a 1999 ford ranger truck slipped on the ice and hit the front of my car. his auto insurance, state farm, paid for a rental car for 40 days and paid $5,338.10 in body repairs, including replacing the radiator. however, when it came time to pay $527.18 to replace the steering shaft and the gear shifter, they refused. the reason given was that these parts in the 2004 chevrolet malibu have a history of wearing out prematurely. the car ran fine before the accident. however, after reading the complaints on your web site, i would also like to add my complaint. i bought this car as a gm certified used vehicle on august 2, 2007, 17 months before the accident. the car had 31,720 miles on it when i bought it and 34,517 miles at the time of the accident, a difference of 2,797 miles i think people should know that insurance companies do not pay for certain components on the 2004 chevrolet malibu. this car is still being sold all over the country. i found 7 gm certified used vehicles, chevrolet 2004 malibu's for sale within a radius of 250 miles ranging in price from $9,500 to $14,000. people think they are safe when they buy these 2004 malibu's; they are not. is there some way they can be taken off the road? *tr the intermediate shaft needed to be replaced. updated 03/18/09.*jb the consumer was also informed the brakes and gear shift needed to be replaced. updated 04/09/09. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet malibu. while attempting to slow down from 60 mph, the brakes would apply automatically. as a result, the contact experienced difficulty when she attempted to accelerate. the failure was intermittent. through online research, the contact discovered a recall for the abs. in may of 2008, she took the vehicle to the dealer and they reprogrammed the abs activation module in regards to nhtsa campaign id number 04v190000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module).; however, the failure worsened a couple of days later. the contact felt as if she were driving on four flat tires. she called the manufacturer and dealer multiple times, but has not received any assistance or satisfaction. the current mileage was 81,318 and failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

I own a 2004 chevrolet malibu. at present time, i have had to have the steering column replaced twice, due to intermittent power steering failure and a constant pull to the left. the first time was at approximately 8800 miles, the second time at 17700 miles. i have also had to have the brake rotors and pads replaced twice. the brakes still make a rubbing noise in the right front, however the dealers tells me they cannot fix that. the car currently has 18000 miles on it. i still have steering issues, such as twitches in the steering wheel and thunks and clunks when driving. i am very uncomfortable driving the car because i am afraid the steering will go out again. *nm

Chevrolet malibu model uses inferior brake rotors causing rotors to be warped almost immediately upon installation on vehicle. upon taking delivery of 2004 chevrolet malibu in july 2004 it was immediately apparent that the front brake rotor was warped causing unsafe braking conditions and a general uneasyness when driving. car was returned to dealer, and only offer on this brand new car was the resurface the rotors. this fix, while temporarily effective, to me is not acceptable on a new from the factory car. the same car has 18000 miles now, and the problem has again resurfaced. upon further research online, this problem appears to be fairly widespread. i have not returned to the dealer to have it checked yet, but this is issue is not likely to be have been cause by poor driving habits by the user. i have another automobile that went over 50000 miles on it's original rotors and even at that point the rotors were not warped.

Rotors were replaced at 17,000 miles because they were warped. then at 46,000 miles there was new pads put on the front of car,and rotors were machined at this time,as regular maintenance. now at 60,000 miles the rotors need replaced again. there is a problem here and chevrolet needs to realize it. cars don't go through rotors every 20,000 miles. this gets expensive once the car is out of warranty. but chevy says its just how it is. *ak

Brake pedal suddenly had no resistance. it happened when the vehicle was in park so there were no consequences. if it happened while driving, there would be no way to stop the vehicle. upon visual inspection, the brake pedal pushrod was disconnected from the brake pedal. the cause appears to be that the brake pedal pushrod retainer was missing. *nm |
