I was driving my vehicle down i-680 in northern ca's bay area. while i was on the freeway in the slow lane and my power steering warning popped up on my car stereo display and a split second later i lost the ability to steer my car. i slowed the vehicle as fast as i could without slamming on the brakes. all of the cars behind me slammed on the breaks and i thought i was going to cause a pile-up. a nice man behind got out of his truck and helped me force the steering wheel to the right so i could pull the car off of the road. i then called my brother and he came and towed the car home. there has never been a warning to this issue. it never acted up and i have never been instructed to do a safety check on the power steering.

Today we driving through a parking lot and trued to turn and heard a popping noise, and then lack of steering. the steering wheel turned but the wheels did not. had to call a tow truck at a cost of $88.00 and took it to my local chevy dealer. the diagnosed the problem as the steering intermediate shaft bolt broke and also the airbag sensor. the total cost of this repair is: $88.00 for the tow truck, $1500.00 for the repair and 2 1/2 days without the car. we have had this popping noise for a while and no one could figure out what it was. some dealers said we needed to replace the complete rack and pinion steering system, others said it just needed greased. we chose to grease it and the noise went away for a while.so far i have replaced the power steering motor, which gm reimbursed me for about 1 year after i had it repaired. it seems like there are many complaints about this problem. it has been a good car except for these constant problems. something needs to be done so gm will fix these issues. *tr

While driving 25 ? 45 and making a left turn or changing lanes to the left the steering wheel loses it power steering. this vehicle cannot be steered unless you are a power lifter at that point. this is my mom?s only vehicle and she is 77 and had carpal tunnel surgery on both her wrists, so i doubt she will be able to steer at all. so if gm says it?s not a safety issue, and the car can still be steered, they are wrong. there has been ?special coverage adjustments? for this issue on the 2006 models in united states and gm has actual recalls for 67,000 vehicles in canada for the same thing. (manufacture recall number 12221) her vehicle vin number doesn't fit into the selected vin numbers and she has the exact same issue. someone needs to have gm open up this special coverage for this issue period, regardless of the year. people with same problem on vin numbers that get the coverage get a free steering column install and she has to pay $600 - $800 for same services? all this because of a small part that is riveted to the steering column on the inside that goes out every 30k miles. *tr

Power steering fails when accelerating, especially when attempting to merge onto highway traffic. power steering failure flashes on the console and chimes sound. failure requires car to be steered using bodily force to control the vehicle, and has almost resulted in numerous accidents. power steering turns back on about 1/2 second after releasing the gas pedal. does not occur with any relative consistency to warrant taking it to the dealer. i have not been contacted by the manufacturer regarding any relevant recalls for this vehicle. *tr

I purchased this vehicle in june 2007 which had a warranty and i purchased an extended warranty from trenor motors, urbana, ohio. in october of 2007 i noticed a clunking noise when i turned the steering wheel left or right. i took the vehicle to the dealer where i bought the car and they had to replace the steering rack. within a year, approximately september 2008 the noise came back and again they had to replace the steering rack. after two months went by the noise returned and they said that they got a bad steering rack and replaced it again. approximately 9 months later in 2009 the noise returned and they said that the a sleeve needed to be lubricated which seem to help however, around august of 2010 the noise returned and the dealer lubricated it again which helped for about 9 months. in may of 2011 the noise returned so we contacted the dealer again and they told us that we would have to pay for any repairs/replacements since the car is now out of warranty. *tr

As other owners have experienced, the steering alarm light went off in my malibu. i have seen that other malibu in my cars vin range experienced the same issue as issued by a gm warning. this seems to me to be an unsafe vehicle and gm should stand behind your vehicle as i could not allow my child to drive to co with the possibility that the steering would go out. while i did not get to the point where we had steering failure, the motor was diagnosed with major issue as did the electronic control which appears to be the root cause of the issue. this car would have steering failure if we did not got to the dealership and replace the motor and steering column.

Cars steering momentarily locked up while on a slight curve in the road, i was able to pull over and checked under the hood for a broken belt or something obvious. after starting the car up again the problem was not present. about 3 weeks later the car was taken in for service and a lube kitwas installed. the problem has reoccured on several occasions since and each time after stopping the car then restarting it the problem is no longer present. there are many reports of this problem on the internet. it is a very scary and potentially dangerous situation to be in. there is a knocking or clunking noise in the front end seemingly associated with the occurrences.

The power steering goes out a few times each week on this 2005 malibu with the electric power steering. it started happening only occasionally, but now much more frequently. i reset it by turning off engine and restarting when i am able to stop. it usually happens fairly soon after starting when cold. sometimes it takes 2 or 3 restarts to keep it working. in addition, the problems that many others are experiencing are also present... like the drift at highway speeds, and the clunking sounds in the front end. so far, the dealer has not been helpful. they just want to replace parts and charge around $800 to repair. this is definitely a safety issue on the malibu as well as other models (like the cobalt) which already have recalls issued for these parts.

The steering wheel in a 2005 chevrolet malibu pops and after time the pops increase and causes the steering of the vehicle to fail. this is a huge safety issue and could cause drivers to crash. if enough people die, maybe gm will recall this design flaw. this is caused from having electronic steering, which means no power steering fluid is suppose to be needed.

This is my second complaint for my 05 malibu ls, i purchased in 2006, approximately 20,000 miles, noticed shortly after the poping noise in the steering area. i was told at that time gm was aware and working on it. kept taking it back for repairs/service. in 08 had the steering gear box replaced, now i'm told it needs to be replaced again along with the i shaft. current mile 109,000, it has only been 50,000 miles since the last gear box was replaced. i asked if this would fix the problem or would i have replace it again and they could not say and offered me $2,000 on trade in. lol i don't think so. and i wouldn't want to make this someone elses problem. when will gm, with all the complaints do a recall?!! what will it take to get a recall on this safety issue will someone have to die? gm must see that this is a big problem...

I own a 2005 malibu. the electric power steering light comes on and power steering randomly quits working. its happened three times at 107,000 miles. there is an extended warranty special coverage # 1-0183, may 2015 or 100,000 miles. i had the dealership diagnois the problem ,cost me $100.00. to fix it is $700.00 to $800.00. the dealer will give me 10% off of parts. gm will not assist with cost because it is not within coverage perimeters. this was a company car where i work. i bought it one year ago for my teenage daughter. i feel the steering just now became a problem at 107,000 miles because it was driven highway miles only. i am a single mother and cannot pay the expense to fix the steering problem. due to safety i cannot put my daughter back into this car. gm has been rude and will not even discuss assisting with the cost of their power steering issue even though they admit it is a 2005 malibu defect. can you give me any advice.? this is a well documented common problem with this model and make of vehicle. definitely a safety issue and gm responsibility.

2005 chevy malibu vehicle did not drive due to power steering issues as i was pulling out of the street. i managed to reverse the car and out it back in the parking spot nearly hitting another parked vehicle because i could not move the steering wheel. i came back a few hours later to attempt to straighten out the car and the power steering worked fine. this vehicle does not inspire confidence in me and chevy must recall this vehicle and fix this problem now before it is too late.

I had just picked up my 14 year old daughter, and her friends. i was driving home in my 2005 malibu with 107k miles on it. when i was making a left turn at 35 miles an hour. my radio dash flashed power steering, and my wheel completely locked up on me. i was barely able to avoid a telephone pole. i was given now warning prior to making the turn. this was the first time this has ever happened. from what i've read online. this seems to be a very common issue with this type of car. the power steering is electrical, and seems to be prone to this kind of thing. this really needs looked at.

Started hearing clunking in the front end about a year ago and power steering going out now and again. clunking progressively got worse and powers steering began to go out everytime i drove my car, especially when making turns. took the car to a local autoshop. i had the rack and pinion replaced. cost me over $500. clunking is gone but power steering is still going out on me while i am driving.

I have a 2005 malibu that i bought new. it has always had a popping noise in the front end when you make a turn. at first it was intermittent, seemed like it did it worse when you made sharp turns. i asked the dealer to check it out a few times - always told they could never find anything wrong with it. it has gotten worse over the years, it seems to pop all of the time now and the steering wheel seems to vibrate a little - especially on rough roads. still, the dealer says they can't find anything wrong--actually got tired of asking them & quit asking when i took my car in for service. now i get a letter about something being wrong with the power steering and they will replace it for 10 years, 100,000 miles. called the dealer-they argued that it was only 70,000 miles. had to fax them a copy of my letter proving it said 100,000 miles. i asked if this was the same problem that i'd been having with the popping noise-they told me that this part wasn't going to fix that popping noise. had to keep asking for the part to be replaced. i am hoping this part will fix whatever the popping noise is. my son drives this car every day and i'm worried about the safety of the car.

Steering issues with the car since i bought it, brand new. took it to a garage twice and was told that these particular cars were having electrical problems with the electronic steering. today my power steering system failed as i was driving to work. i see numerous complaints about the same issue on the internet but still not recall.

I received a letter from chevy about electric power steering loss on chevy malibu. the letter said that not to take to dealer unless you are experiencing problems. i wasn't until yesterday. while taking my children to school, there was loss of steering, it locked down, and power steering was displayed in the information center. i call chevy and now they say it don't apply to me because my car is over 100,000 miles on it. this is a safety concern as after researching this problem online there are many reported cases of loss of steering but chevy will not fix because of being over mileage. i thought with it possibly endangering the lives of people riding in the car that it would be fixed regardless. the steering locks down and the vehicle can not be controlled.

I have a 2005 cherovlet malibu and the electrical power steering went out on my car exactly one week after chevrolet sent me a letter infofming me of this exact problem. they are refusing to cover this repair because my car has 130,000 miles, although they are all highway miles because i work an hour away from my home and my car is only 5 years old. i am a loyal general motors customer, despite the fact that i work for ford motor company, and this is my third brand new general motors car that i have purchased, my husband has as well purchased at least 10-15 brand new cars through general motors. i am a very unhappy customer and i will no longer be purchasing any cars from your company in the future if this is how loyal customers are treated.

My 2005 chevy malibu is having this very loud noise coming from the steering column. there is no where to put or check the power steering fluid. this is a piece of **** car...i am scared that something is going to happen and it is not going to be pretty if the steering issues in malibues are not resolved. i have seen a lot of complaints online about the steering in chevy malibues. with all the complaints on line, that should be enough to gm to call a recall..... this is dangerous and lives can be lost.

2005 chevy malibu ls steering began to lock up on slow turns. there was no warning, just a sudden locking of the steering column. (it would not turn. literally lock the steering wheel until additional speed could be maintained. the problem started intermittantly 2 weeks ago & steadily worsened. happening 10-12 times a day this week. hit 2 curbs, nearly jumped one curb & nearly hit a car. we had to put the car in reverse to straighten the steering prior to completeing the turn. car has 85000 miles on it. mechanic shop replaced rack/pinion steering & both front end rear tie rod rings. this defect is apparent on malibu's according to the numerous complaints seen on the internet.

My son was driving my 2005 chevy malibu to work & the power steering light came on & was having troubles getting the car to turn corners. he called me; i told him to get fluid. upon getting fluid & reading the manual, he discovered that it was an electric power steering & get to your gm dealer immediately. we did so & was told the power steering column was shorting out & needed replaced. there had been no recall on this for the malibu but had for the pontiac g6, colbalt & others. the dealership we went to replaced & i had to pay out of my pocket $644.86. i feel this should have been a recall & that the safety of my son driving at the time put his life in danger. i would like reimbursed by gm for this expense & a recall done so that other malibu owners do have incur any injuries and/or expense for replacement. i am sending a letter to gm as well as a copy of the letter to nhtsa even though i am submitting an email complaint. thank you for your attention in this matter.

My 2005 chevy malibu has intermittant power steering fault on the center display, and yesterday the power steering actually shut off while going down the highway at 70mph. very difficult to steer just to get off of the road. pulled over and shut off car and restarted and it worked for 5 minutes and then shut down again, wrestled the car home, and today it works fine. chevy cobalt already has a recall for this, why not the malibu. i have filed a complaint with chevrolet and was instructed to get the car fixed as it was clearly a dangerous situation, but it would have to be at my expense. does someone have to die to admit this is a dangerous situation and should be recalled? i do see hundreds of complaints for the same issue on this web site, and even more on other sites.

I have a 2005 chev. malibu v6 that has had a problem with it's power steering. i was going down the highway when suddenly the power steering went out and it was very hard to steer and get out of fast moving traffic. when i got it to the dealer, i was told that they had to replace the entire steering column. i have done research on this and have found a number of people with the same experience with chev. malibu's. this is a very dangerous defect that the company should recall and repair! some people have had to replace the steering column more than once because the new column put in is still being made with the defect. this power steering failure occurs without any warning and in my case it happened on the highway at 65mph. luckily i was able to keep it under control but it was amazing that i was able to considering that i was changing lanes at the time! after doing research on this i have learned that others have had similar experiences. i certainly hope something can be done about this.

Regarding my 2005 chevrolet malibu: vehicle is used as personal transportation to and from work in town errands and vacations out of state, over the last 4 weeks my wife and other family have driven the vehicle and have experienced intermittent loss of power steering while turning corners at relatively low speed. on the date of this writing my wife reports having to stop 3 times on the way to work because of dead wheel steering. it seems that the system will operate after a short period where power is switched off by the ignition switch. i have reported this problem to chevrolet corporate customer service (ref# 71-833386371 made 25may2010) and told there is no recall order for the power steering system for this vehicle. i have learned from the internet that there are many complaints of this very occurrence on this and other year models of malibu. your agency is, i'm sure, aware of the recall of 2005 - 2010 cobalt for steering problems of a siimilar nature. i have attempted to solve the malfunction believing that the fuse was malfunctioning and replaced it with a fuse of recommended size. the steering went dead serveral times after that. i have contacted the local dealer service rep and am making arrangements to have the problem analyzedthere. however i'm not expecting them to fin d anything they can work on being an intermittent problem. i am fearful for my wife's welfare in that vehicle and pray your agency begin proper inquiries into what looks like gm's knowledge of a serious safety issue and their unwillingness to address it.

Car is in the shop again for steering shaft. loud slamming clunking noise while turning. grease bearings break down and the shaft slams around. had it all replaced 2 years ago also. talked to gm, they verified with the dealership that it was the same issue as before . i was told that there is no recall because customers do not personally call gm and report the repair. are you kidding me?? if they see a trend with reports being made directly to gm from the customer (not the dealership), they take it into consideration. if you have a repair done to your malibu, call gm every time and report it. this is their way of escaping responsibility for a known problem. they told me it might be an issue in my area only. since when do cars know where they live?? gm needs to fix the problem.

Clunking noise at low speeds when turning steering wheel- either direction. power steering failed today - in reverse. managed to park car in driveway and (per previous complaints i googled) after 20 minutes i went out and started the car & the steering wheel was somewhat normal but i felt a slight catch when i turned wheel either direction. no service has been done on the steering yet by me. i have an extended warranty - covers the power steering pump - but not the shaft.

I own a 2005 chevy malibu and have had consistent issues with the power steering going out. there has been a recall on almost every chevy made from 2005-2010 for the same reason except for the malibu. this is not acceptable especially if you read all of the blogs and posts of the huge amount of chevy owners dealing with the exact same thing, many of them getting it fixed multiple times only for it to go out again. this problem almost caused my wife and son to be involved in an accident.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu, bought brand new, i've had problems from the start with this car. the rack & pinion has been replaced twice. the hub bearings have had to be replaced, the rear stabilizer bar needs replacing. i have a gas cap issue, now to top it all off, i've been having issues where i am driving and i start to accelerate and the steering wheel locks up, i have been on the freeway several times when this happens. this is a very dangerous situation, gm will do nothing about this. they know that the 2005 malibu is a dangerous car but will not recall at all.

Made a pit stop on way to work my car made a sound alert and power steering came on over my radio message window. 2 weeks ago steering felt loose turning left but a little stiff turning right but after a few days it was fine. this morning it happened again but today was the only day of the alert sound and message. found it could be that the electric power steering column needs to be replaced cost ($600 - $1500). power steering electric motor / control module / steering rack / failing sensor in steering column / voltage problem between the alternator & ignition coil assembly. i have printed out 11 pages of similar complaints and noticed the chevy cobalt & other chevy models had or are having a recall for the same complaints as the chevy malibu but the malibu is not one of them. this problem can cause complete steering failure or just very hard steering (unpredicted) & can cause accidents. i'm still waiting to find out which expensive repair mine will be. i did find that if my vin is between 5f100001 - 5f250216 that i need to call chevy if my mileage is under 70,000 & they cover the cost of repair. i don't have my vin as my car is in the shop now. *tr

Over a period of about 6 weeks, our 2005 chev malibu first start to display a power steering fluid low message on the instrument panel (on digital text readout). this vehicle does not have a fluid resivior, it used electronic assist on the power steering. iniitial, no noticable issues were detected while driving the car. one day this display started to occur about every 30 seconds, with a beeping audit alert. our daughter was driving the vehicle that afternoon, and when turning a corner there was a loss of power steering assistance. this was in town at low speeds, she was able to recover from the incident with no accident or damage. the vehicle was taken to the nearest dealership, keyes chevrolet for repairs. repair order states tested and found failed steering column motor. this vehicle was purchased used at about 39.000 miles, and was about 125 miles out of a gm certified 12 mo / 12,000 mile warranty. gm did not cover the repair, paid bill for total of $660.05 from our oen funds. in an internet review, this problem seems to be a common issue with owners of this year and model, and several people have reported damage after crashing into gaurdrails, etc. when this problem occurs.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu, purchased it in jun 2005 used. jumping forward, nov 25, 2008, i was driving home and my steering wheel snapped and popped and was still going around in a circle, while car was still going straight. i had the vehicle towed, and come to find out, the rack and pinion needed to be fixed. got that done. then, august 2008, engine goes out. mind you, both instances, i have been told that this has been a known issue with that model car. got the engine fixed. now, 3/26/2010, im driving and the power steering locks up! i have contacted chevrolet about these incidents, and they were no help. just told me to take the car to a dealership. well, today, i found out on the web that there had been a special recall on my model car, between a certain vin number, and this was around the time my steering went out before. when asking the rep isabel how can they issue recalls and not mail them to consumers, she told me that they didn't have to , if they were special notifications. how would the consumer know that there was a possible issue if we are not notified? she then proceeds to tell me about a new special notification on this same car on the fuel caps! my life is at stake in this car, and gm is aware of these issues, but no help. i also noticed on the web today that there are many customers complaining about the power steering issues on the same make and model vehicle, most are the same year, and gm is not willing to assist! *tr

My sister was using my 2005 chevrolet malibu and when exiting the nys thruway she heard a chime, a light went on and the vehicle lost the power steering. her husband in the passenger seat had to assit with steering. it was too difficult for my sister to steer by herself. they parked the car and shut it off. after a short time the car was turned on and the steering was fine. this problem only occured once to date although i have had steering problems in this vehicle since 2007. while under warranty the steering was lubed. after the warranty expired i have had over $981.00 in steering repairs at the dealer which included steering suspension shaft, steering ball joint and steering arm. the latest incident of the loss of power steering is a safety concern. please investigate. i have read gm was recalling cobalts for this problem but no mention of the malibu. the malibu has the same problem.

The 2005 chevy malibu has a weakness in its steering components similar to the other gm vehicles that are under gm's voluntary recall. the top complaint on the malibu if one reviews various websites is the steering by a very wide margin. i bought my malibu new in may of 2005. one year later they replaced a gear because of the noise it bade turning and looseness of the steering. 9 months later the steering had a problem again and again in 2007. that time the dealer replaced the whole steering assembly. my car is again starting to make the popping noise which is an indication that the issue is returning again. even thought gm keeps replacing parts the problem keeps returning. steering should not need repairing 4 times in less then 5 years. the danger is as reported on various websites is that it can fail completely and cause an accident. mine has not caused an accident but we should not wait until it does. *tr

 1. in 2007, our 2005 malibu started having popping in the steering when turning at low speeds. the rack assembly was replaced 11/02/07; the car had 20,139 miles on the odometer. 2. the popping recurred by august 2009. september 01, 2009 the rack assembly was replaced along with set toe; 42,809 on the odometer. 3. the popping recurred within less than 3 months. december 18, 2009, the steering gear (excessive slack) was replaced and set toe. 4. the popping has come back within less than 2 months. it is scheduled to have a rod replaced (not sure of any other parts) march 5, 2010. we have notified gm of this and a representative has been assigned to the problem. *tr

Power steering outage. experienced problem off and on this year. i drive a 2005 chevy malibu lt v6. gm has not issued a recall for this make and model. however, parts were covered for the repair! i believe its unfair for the consumer to have to pay for labor for an issue they didn't cause. i am pursuing gm for a refund of what was paid for parts to correct there error. *tr

Approximately the week of feb 14, 2010, my 2005 chevy malibu chimed, the power steering felt funny, smelled some burning and a warning sign about my power steering. i pulled over, turned the car off and was not able to see the issue. i started the car backup and the warning was gone. it happened 2 or 3 more times that week. i notified chevy and there is special coverage service bulletin #07126. i called chevy and said if you are over 70,000 miles, it will not be covered. i never received this notice from chevy or the dealership of purchase (they no longer are a chevy dealer). i was at 72,500. i have not been riding it much and now chevy is recalling other cars with the same issue, but not the malibu. *tr

My son was driving my 2005 malibu when the power steering went out. a warning light indicated the problem to him. he was able to pull to the side of the road where he restarted the car. the car reset itself but the same problem occurred again. it was at that point i told him to take to a dealer to have the car inspected. upon inspection it was discovered that the power steering column needed to be replace. in december of 2007 general motors sent me a letter detailing possible problems with the power steering system. what happened to my car was what was outlined in the letter. the letter said not to take the car in to be inspected if i didn't have any problems at that time. it also said that they would reimburse me if i had any problems with the car but with a deadline date. i had to take the car in by december of 2008 and the car had to have 70,000 or less miles on it. since i did not have any problems with the car up to that point i did not take the vehicle in to be inspected. the problem with the car occurred in january of 2010. i had the car repaired because it wasn't safe to drive in the condition it was in. i contacted gm with my concerned and asked for reimbursement. i was turned down because the problem came after the deadline outlined in the letter. *tr

I was driving on a side street at about 30 mph when the chimes sounded, the power steering light came on, and steering became very difficult. i had to stop, turn the car off and then restart it before i could steer again. i understand that this is an ongoing issue with my model car (2005 chevy malibu) and that chevrolet has a technical service bulletin (#07126) on this issue, but my car is outside the maximum mileage to be covered under this tsb. i also understand that there were some nhtsa defect investigations into this issue (primarily the 2004 model), but they have since been closed because the number of reported failures was within an acceptable range. i guess my response to that is, how many accidents do there have to be and how many people need to die before this issue is taken seriously? while my personal experience was not life-threatening, if this had occurred in heavy traffic at high speeds it very well could have resulted in a fatal accident. i saw today that federal regulators have opened an investigation into complaints that power steering systems in the chevrolet cobalt can fail, making it more difficult to control the car. i'm sure this is the same issue that is still occurring on the malibu. i implore you to reopen the investigation on the malibu (a simple google of malibu power steering problems will show that it is still a major issue) and do whatever is necessary to have this problem corrected. *tr

2005 chevrolet malibu steering issue. there is a thumping noise in the steering column when turning. our daughter's 2006 malibu was doing the same thing which she took in under the original warranty. they said the column just needed to be lubed which they covered for her. ours was under the extended warranty which was getting ready to expire with a $200 deductible. the amount they would charge for lubing the column was $90. we have not had it done yet, but after reading the other complaints, i am not sure the lube will ultimately solve the problem, even on our daughter's 2006. *tr

12/2006 i purchased a 2005 chevrolet malibu. on three occasions in 2007 i experienced a loud knocking noise in the steering column of my vehicle and the first two times, it was not completely fixed and finally after the 3rd time they said it was fixed. until 12/11/2009 when while i was driving, my power steering warning flashed across my clock screen and my steering wheel suddenly locked up and i was unable to turn my vehicle. then on 12/21/2009, i was pulling out of a parking lot and again, the same thing happened 3 times within an hour. i found out from aaa that chevrolet(gm) had printed a service bulletin regarding this particular problem with the 2005 chevrolet malibus and i immediately took my car to steve moore chevrolet at 9325 south boulevard, charlotte, nc -- at which time they informed me after inspecting the car, that my whole steering column had gone bad. on 1/13/2010, i had to pay $792.00 to have this repaired and i feel that since this was a problem that gm was aware of, i should be reimbursed for the expense that i've incurred as well as the inconvenience i was caused due to gm not being willing to extend coverage for this repair. *tr

The steering wheel pops and jerks in an erratic motion to the left and right. over the past week it has progressively worsened to the point that it will actually cause the wheels to turn and steer with the wheel. and without no particular reason the power steering will cut out and stop working. while i have yet to take it into a mechanic i have an appointment in a week. *tr

Steering column shakes and moves on its own then power steering pulled to the left and power steering went out almost crashing into highway barrier. if it happened to my wife she would not have been able to recover and would have hit the barrier at highway speeds, probably killing her and the kids. power steering comes and goes at any time i never know when it will go out. dealership will have to replace the entire steering column for about $2,000. this is an obvious issue since there are several complaints on this year of malibu and there has been 2 tsbs on this particular issue and they will not extend the mileage more than 70k. this is a safety issue due to the fact that you never know when the power steering is going to go out and what the steering column is going to do. this causes an unsafe condition and the probability if having an accident is great since it is directly related to the steering and steering column. *tr

Loss of power steering in 2005 chevy malibu as described in service bulletin #07126 caused a near miss accident on or about12/10/2009. with the unexpected loss of the electrical assist system vehicle becomes extremely difficult to control. service bulletin covers vehicles to 70,000 miles of which this vehicle is at 79986 outside of the service bulletin coverage. steering loss is now an intermittent problem, of which we will schedule to have parts replaced as per bulletin at our cost. i have had conversations with gm on coverage due to the extreme safety hazard this issue causes and the ownership of this issue that gm has conceded by the issuance of said bulletin. facts of my conversations with gm have been documented in case file #71-783921469. it is my opinion that this steering failure condition should be reviewed for full recall due to the extreme hazard this causes no matter the mileage or age of vehicles covered in the original service bulletin. *tr

I have had several problems with my power steering. it just went out all of a sudden this morning. i almost had an accident. there was an error message on the dash stating power steering and the steering column got really tight and was very hard to turn. i investigated and noticed that there have been several complaints for the 2005 chevy malibu power steering issues. i called the gm dealership and also had a diagnostic done and the problem was the power steering module. i'm really upset because this is the second time this has happened. i'm very afraid to even drive the car because this could occur at any time which can cause and huge accident. the dealership informed me that they would not be able to assist me because i have more than 100, 000 miles on my car. this is totally not fair. i asked the representation (peter) what if i have an accident. he stated that there is really nothing he could do. out of all of the reports on the power steering issues it's about time something gets done. *tr

At approximately 30,000 miles our 2005 chevy malibu developed a clunk in the steering at low speeds, whether or not turning was involved. the dealer replaced the steering gear at no charge. after about 20,000 additional miles the clunk returned. another dealer replaced both the steering gear and the intermediate shaft at no charge. i have obtained, thru nhtsa, the service bulletins which describe this defect, which shows me that chevrolet is well aware of this problem, and has not made a recall. i am concerned that the defect may return even with the new parts, and i might have to pay for repairing a defect after the warranty period, for a problem which should be permanently resolved. *tr

The power steering on my 2005 chevrolet malibu goes out frequently. the other day i was driving down the highway and the warning beeps (like when the door is ajar) went off, and the power steering went out. i put the car in neutral and turned it off, and back on. this has happened with my car since 10/07. i have taken it to the dealer only to be told that it will cost about $1200 to have it fixed. i think that this should be a recall! it is very dangerous. i have a 16 year old daughter that i will not allow to drive my car because of it's issues. unfortunately, in this economy i cannot afford to put out $1200 at this time. *tr

I have a 2005 malibu, and have had a clunking noise in the steering since approx. 40,000miles. i have taken it to the garage several times and they have told me that chevrolet did not make a place to lubricate the joints inside the column so that they dry out quickly, and are banging together and it is nothing to worry abouti do not agree, anything constantly clanging against another object is eventually going to wear out. i also just had my fuel tank, fuel sensor replaced,at the cost of 600. it started giving false readings and then got increasingly worse until it did not work anymore. my exterior lighting is also messed up. i have to replace bulbs frequently and it looks like the base of the bulb is melted when they take them out. i had contacted my local dealer on these issues and they stated no recalls . *tr

Bought the 2005 malibu used in august 2007. i have replaced the both front directional bulbs at least 10 times since buying the car. the lights work intermittently or not at all. the right bulb was out for about 3 months then the left bulb went out. i went to replace the bulbs again yesterday. i jimmied the socket they go into and now they both appear to be working. however, i noticed the amber plastic covering on the left bulb was burned, there was a large burn hole in it, and the melted plastic was dripping into the bottom of the covering. i am also noticing, and have been noticing, a loud thumping sound when i hit the gas as if something has to roll into place. lately it also seems as though the anti-lock brakes very, very slightly kick in when i am braking and go over a bump. after reading the other comments i am going to my mechanic to have him look at the issues as safety is a large concern. *tr

I need your help. i bought a 2005 malibu from a local car dealer. the car had low miles and i thought it would be a safe and reliable car. so safe, that i allowed my teenage son to drive my car. while he was making a left hand turn from a 4-way stop, he heard a pop and then had no steering without any way to control the car he ended up in a field. i thank god he was not going fast, that there was no other cars or people involved, and he was not hurt. i had the car towed to my mechanic who is a certified master technician, who worked for gm as a line tech for 25 yrs. he informs me that this should have never happened in a car that is only 4 yrs old, and felt it was defective. he said the failure occurred inside the steering rack causing the pinion to disengage resulting in loss of control. i then had the car towed to a gm dealer who?s mechanic said the same thing but because i did not buy the car from them, they would not help me?.my next step was to contact gm?.they took a week to investigate?and decided that because i bought the car from a private car dealer, it had 86k miles on it and it was past the factory warranty they felt no need to do any thing about this. not only was the steering rack and pinion damaged, the power steering unit under the dash and the air bag coils were damaged as well. the cost to repair this is over $2000.00. it?s not just the cost to repair the car that upsets me; it?s the fact that gm has no concern for safety. i have found long list for consumer complaints about gm?s steering failures. ?unbelievable? and this is not the only site that has complaints. i know there was a recall to address the steering defect in the malibu. but they obviously decided it was of no big concern to fix the problem. *tr

My wife almost had an accident when the power steering failed. she pulled out into an intersection and the power steering failed and then the car stalled in the intersection the car to a certified repair shop. he said there was a bulletin out by general motors dated november 8, 2007 that 2004-2005 malibu's and 2005 pontiac g 6's are having problems with the power steering. general motors knew that you might have a lack of power steering, vibration, or a rattle or clunk noise from the left lower instrument panel. gm should have recalled these cars to fix their problem. i was told that this problem was a safety issue and that general motors should be responsible. i took the car to a gm dealer and he agreed that gm should fix the car. i filed a complaint with gm and finally after calling for 2 weeks, they said they would do nothing. i am very upset with gm and just wonder how many people have wrecked malibu's because of the failure of power steering. if you have one of these cars, i suggest you sell it or take it to the dealer for repair before you lose your power steering when pulling out into an intersection and the car dies in front of another vehicle. i will never buy another gm product and advise the same for anyone else. *tr

As of this date, feb. 17, 2009, the part in question has not failed, causing any crashes or injuries. shortly after i purchased the vehicle, i noticed a thumping whenever the steering wheel was turned sharply to the right or to the left. while under manufacturer's warranty, i had it checked out at least 3 times, and each time the dealership service department assured me there was no recall on the part, the boot of joint somehow connected to the steering. since that time, i have had my personal mechanic check out the problem and he has diligently checked for a recall or a corrective measure from chevrolet, but there has been none. the mechanic has greased this joint several times, and it helps the thumping, but eventually it returns over time. i have read where others have experienced their steering totally going out because of this issue. i am afraid for my family's safety due to this problem that chevrolet has constantly refused to address. component #2: i was constantly having to replace the front turn signals as the bulbs were constantly burning out. component #3 the fan which controls the inside air flow has constantly rattled unless the fan is turned on the highest setting. the dealership even replaced that fan, telling me a broken part had fallen down into it. i returned the car to the dealership at least 3 times, but they finally said they could not find anything else. it still rattles horribly. *tr

In 2006 i bought an 2005 chevy malibu. before 49600 the power steering went out. i took it to the shop 8 times before they could tell that it was the steering column. it goes out without warning. we have almost wrecked several times. it has gone out going down the interstate. i started to replace it, but before i did that i researched the matter. it appears that a lot of people are having the same problem that i am having, from the 2005s to the 2008s, from the malibu to the malibu maxx. i have not replaced it because many people have had them changed three or four times and they keep breaking. i don't have that kind of money to just throw away. i can't afford to sell it either or trade it in. i am the one who drives it most of the time because i am afraid it will go out when my wife is in a curve, and she could wreck and die because she is not strong enough to control it when it goes out. *tr

Grinding, popping noises come from front end and squeaking noise from rear. you can feel the entire car shift when turning or traveling over bumps in the road. sounds like the whole body of the car is going to slide off of the chassie. january 2007, dealer replaced steering rack and set toe, hooked chassie ears to the front suspension, and replaced rear sway bar bushings. vehicle had 26,080 miles on it. 11 months later, now 38,800 miles, same issue. having to take vehicle back to dealership again and it is no longer under warranty, to have steering and suspension assessed again. gm needs to assess this problem before someone gets killed in these malibus. another local dealer states they see this same problem in other malibus, yet no recall. what is gm waiting for? they need to own up to a design flaw. *tr

Vehicle intermittently wants to steer on its own. this happens for only a short time when it occurs. primarily it wants to go left. once i tried to go into the left lane of a freeway quite gradually...it wanted to go left alright...although it wanted to go quickly into the lane! car has been to the dealer 5 times for this problem. the dealer has never been able to duplicate the problem. they have replaced the steering column twice. the last time was this past friday (7/30/05). hasn't happened since then (tuesday, 8/2/05)...but...again this is a very intermittent problem. my mileage has dropped from 33 miles per gallon to 29 miles per gallon. dealer says that nothing they have done should have caused this problem. they say that the 29 miles per gallon is within specifications...this drop is very significant. have requested a buy back direct from chevrolet. the vehicle well exceeds the requirements for a buy back according the ohio lemon law. chevrolet says that they will not buy back the car...even though it exceeds the requirements for the ohio lemon law! my biggest concern is that the steering will go totally out and the car will go wherever it decides to...i don't want to be injured and don't want to injur any one else. *jb

Chevrolet malibu 2005. driving on a local street, i made a right onto another street and the steering became stiff, hard to make a sharp turn and i had to pull the steering wheel hard and use an extreme amount of effort to completer a turn, a bell went off. i was unable to steer to the left or the right. the car was still running. i turned the car off and then restarted the car and then i was able to turn the wheel freely for about 15 seconds then the wheel became stiff again. if i had reached the highway to get to my destination driving 50 mph and i had to suddenly quickly steer to the left or right to avoid an potential problem, i may have gotten into a potentially serious accident injuring myself & others. i purchased the car used & only had it 10 months. i am financing the car. i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle now because it's only a 2005, only 2 years old with a possible major safety problem. i want to know if there are other 2005 chevy malibu's with the same problem who have serviced the vehicle and if they continue to have the problem and if there are more owners with this complaint. i am taking this car to the dealer where i bought it, have them inspect it a get more information about this problem. *jb

At approx. 7:30 am 04/06/2006 i was heading westbound on i-290 on a clear, dry road, 40 degrees temp(about) when the power steering failed in my 2005 chevy malibu, causing me to lose control of the vehicle. my vehicle impacted with (1) one other vehicle, both of our respective vehicles spinning out of control.i was transported to a hospital, and have been in touch with my insurance company, which informed me that they(my ins. co. ) would not subrogate , in fact to get my car looked at by gmc , the insurance co. finally decided to hold the car in salvage, instead of sending it to auction, which they were in the process of doing, due to the fact that no recall on the power steering(eps), or steering column exists. this is a courtesy(it, the car was a total loss)to me, as i have started the process of calling gmc and am trying, unsuccesfully to complete my report to their claim dept( cannot get through).my auto will be held, as i stated for 60 days for gmc to come and inspect it. however, i have been told that when the motor vehicle is restarted(as it was after the accident i was involved in) the power steering can reset itself. my insurance co. has assured me that, had there been a recall that they would do everything within their power to file and pursue a claim against gmc for all costs involved, and this is why they are willing to hold the vehicle for inspection. all i know is that i found this site after having relayed what happened to me to a gentelman in a local grocery store, if not for this complaint page, my car would have been auctioned off by now. i am in considerable pain, and not only out the loss of my vehicle, but i will be surcharged for3 years 4 mo. in, (for a problem that gmc is aware of, and on your /this complaint page all gmc does is replace the steering column.) (2007) when my policy renews.this is unfair, and i have searched the internet, and found similar complaints on msn.com/autos/chevrolet/malibu/2004/2005 personal reviews.

For several months, i have both heard and felt a creaking in the front end of my vehicle as though metal parts are loose when the car is put in motion both backing and forward, turns in either direction. i did bring this condition to the attention the local chevrolet dealership where i bought this car and where i have had it serviced since then. they indicated to me, they could not find a problem, could not hear or feel any condition, and further stated there was no fix from gm. however, this condition appears to be getting worse and not recognized by the service people at the dealership. my concern is, at some point, could or will the front end fail when the car is in motion which is a clear safety issue. the dealership did point out that the tires have some wear on them and it is my feeling the tire wear may be caused from this condition. *nm

I bought a 2005 chevrolet malibu april 6, 2006 with 17,000 miles. in october of 2006 with 31,500 miles the steering was making terrible popping noises. the dealer replaced the steering rack and the problem went away for a few months. at 41,000 miles i again had to have the steering rack replaced, this time gm covered it as a goodwill gesture. now, at 54,000 miles, the steering is making the same noise again. it can't be safe to drive. three steering racks in 20,000 miles is pretty excessive. *jb
STEERING - WHEEL AND HANDLE BAR
10/12/200437110/11/2004
Picked up new fleet vehicle at dealership 10 11 04 and drove home approximately 35 miles. began appraisal route 10 12 04. it became immediately apparent that the steering wheel was loose on the steering shaft and was becoming increasingly loose with each movement of the steering wheel. in less than 40 miles of total driving since picking up the new car, the steering wheel had so much play (rocked 3/4 of an inch front to back at either side and could be pushed in and gently pulled back at least 1/2 on splined shaft) the car was not safe to drive. since i did not have nearby access to dealer, i had a body shop owner at my first stop look at the problem. to get right to the point, after removing the plastic steering column covers and adjacent cover on column side of steering wheel, the retaining nut for the steering wheel could be turned with a finger and was nearly off the end of the steering shaft. the shop owner was able to access the nut with an open end wrench and made at least 4 full turns on the nut before it began to offer resistance. the nut was tightened 1/8 turn at a time due to limited access, but corrected the problem. however, my concern is the speed at which the nut backed off initially while driving. i noticed no such free play on my trip home from the dealer on 10 11 04. most of the loosening of the nut seems to have occurred within the next 5 miles of driving, which was mostly stop and go residential with lots of turns. clearly,if the average consumer were presented with this situation, he/she may have elected to try to return to the dealership with the car, which could have been catastrophic. i mean, the wheel became so loose the car was undriveable in less than 40 miles from new. *nm
