Driving down the highway and the steering went out. completely unable to turn the steering wheel in any direction so my daughter had to coast until the car slowly drifted to the shoulder of the road. she had absolutely no control of the car. having it repaired and it is the power steering motor. it is an electric asst motor. it is a $800 repair. i am lucky that of my three daughters that drive she is the one with better judgment and thinking. *tr

I was driving at 55mph when i lost my power steering. this now happens within 5 minutes of driving. when i shut the car off and back on i have power steering for approx 5-10 minutes. when i do have power steering the steering wheel vibrates really bad and moves on its own. i drive 600 miles a week to work on a highway. this is not safe. i called gm and they said to have a diagnostic test done, i did this on friday 1 25 13. the code was co545. there has already been a recall on 2006 for the same reason, the power steering mechanism should not go out on a car that is 6 years old. *tr

Re: chevy malibu 2007 power steering motor needs to be recalled immediately! when passing on highway, the steering locked and made a rattling sound in front driver side, i had to force steering around the vehicle i was passing or i would have hit the other vehicle. the steering was not operating safely. this could have been a bad accident. i took to my malibu to an auto repair, they looked for recalls and checked for warranty of the power steering motor, but none was found for this model/make/year. the power steering motor had to be replaced, the day after i almost had the accident. i was afraid to drive it. i looked on-line at home and saw that the cobalt and other make/model/year had been recalled for a defective power steering motor in canada-the united states needs to recall this in the states. there may already have been fatal accidents caused by the defective power steering motor. if my daughter or son had been driving this could have been a deadly accident, since the steering was out of control. get this recall done for the power steering motor on the chevy malibu 2007. there is a defective power steering motor in the chevy malibu 2007 and it should be recalled immediately! i contacted gm, and gm said there was no recall on this model/make/year. i reported that my power steering motor had to be replace for $867.51 to gm and requested a reimbursement from gm on the expense that were incurred, but was denied by a tier one gm customer service person and also his supervisor in the tier one gm department.- i wonder how many tiers you have to go through to get action done. gm customer service said it takes a long time for recalls through the government. i hope it doesn't. i told gm, they should be taking care of this by going to the top at gm to get the recall done, before more accidents or deaths are caused by this defect. get this recall done! *tr

There are two issues which are occurring with the steering in this vehicle. first, when the car is or is not moving (any speed) the steering wheel twitches and moves on it's own. second, without warning, the vehicle's steering assist stop's working 100% and there is total lost in the power steering. this is the most concerning because it happens while turning corners and while going down the highway at high speeds. gm recalled a lot of other models for this exact problem but not the chevy malibu. to top it off, the repairs are going to be astronomical. *tr

My son was driving the 2007 chevy malibu i bought for him for work/school when the electrical power steering system went out. he was driving down a busy three lane road, and as he began to change lanes, the steering became very stiff. he heard a chime and then saw the dash flash power steering. since he wasn't expecting this, he couldn't control the steering right away, and the malibu continued to drift toward the outer lane in which another vehicle was in. he barely avoided hitting the side of this other vehicle by turning the steering wheel of the malibu the other way by using a lot of force. since then, the power steering goes out intermittently. this is very unsafe and needs to be repaired as soon as possible, before someone is injured or killed, and it should be repaired by the manufacturer, since this seems to be a general problem with the 2007 chevy malibu. *tr

The first incident occurred in 2010, but has progressively become worse and most constant. the vehicles electrical steering will shake and jerk uncontrollably at times. the car does not always shake and jerk, but this occurs at least once per day. some days it will shake and jerk non stop for long periods of time, others it will be short and quick. the car generally will shake and jerk for a few minutes, then will display on the display power steering and chime. the shaking occurs while driving and also when in park. depending on the severity, the jerking can jolt the car into that direction. this is a safety hazard as it is very possible that this could cause an accident. the jerks are not controllable by two hands. often while driving, the car looks as if it is jerking back and forth in its lane due to the rough jerking of the steering wheel. this is the most nerve racking while driving in weather such as snow or rain, where the road is slick or slippery. having the car jerk around on ice is just an accident waiting to happen. when the problem first occurred, i took my vehicle to a gm dealership and had it inspected. the mechanic told us that the only option was to replace the entire steering column but they could not say if this would fix the issue. after reviewing many complaints and concerns online, i researched for recalls. i found that many models similar to ours have been recalled, but not our specific year. *tr

I got in my car to go to work and when i started it the message power steering showed up on the dic. i shut off the car and restarted it to no avail. later in the day when i started my vehicle the power steering was back but the steering would pulse back and forth and eventually the message appeared again and i lost power steering. i believe this should be recalled because the power steering goes in and out randomly and when not expecting it could cause an accident and because it happens at all speed it could ultimately lead to death. i know there is a bulletin out for this type of problem but i don't see how and ignition coil has anything to do with the power steering.

Bought this car from a nissan dealer as a used car in june 2012, it is the lt ve model. the problem is: while turning left with acceleration the steering wheel jerks right, at times it can be jerked out of the hands (depends on acceleration speed), also a clunking noise from left front wheel at times (with or without engine running). sometimes while driving at 55 mph or better, taking a left handed curve, steering will become stiff and hard to turn. this has not caused any accidents yet but it could in the future resulting in serious injuries or death. *tr

I was driving my malibu when suddenly the steering became uncontrolable. i managed to pulled the car to the side of the road. i shut the engine down. i pulled out my manual for the 2007 car and i was directed to the kind of power steering that was supposed to be installed in my car. the manual indicates that the 2007 manual for my chevrolet malibu ltz with a v6 engines should have a hydraulic power steering system in place. it also shows by illustration the position of the power steering resevoir. i took the car to a chevrolet dealer in arlington, ma. and the mechanic said this car has no power steering resevoir. i showed him the manual and he said theres something wrong here. call gm customer care and maybe they can resolve the problem because they wrote the manual.

When accelerating and providing input to the steering wheel the steering seems to go out of the vehicle. this only happens if the engine rpms approach 3000. this tends to happen as i'm accelerating onto the expressway. this has been happening off and on for approximately a year.

2007 chevy malibu ls 3.4 electric power steering problem, the steering wheel will start pulsating either left or right at starting the engine, while driving it will move by itself like if it is trying to correct the position of the tires. for less than 2 seconds makes you feel like there is no control on the steering unless you correct the direction of the tires by gradually compensating on the opposite direction. it will display a warning sign for the power steering on the radio, on mi case i had it for two days, then it erased by itself, i tried to look for the power steering reservoir, without knowing that this car has none, since it is handle by an electric motor. i will take the car to my mechanic to see if he knows about these problem, since is no recalls so far in this 2007 malibu for the electric power steering.

2007 malibu-started hearing popping when turning in 2009, a year after i bought the car. loer i-shaft replaced. car continues to pop and i have lost the ability to steer my car. now told it is the steering column and gear. apparently not covered by warrenty. i have found several complaints of this issue and believe it is a true defect that gm needs to recall and take care of for the safety of me and my daughter. could potentially cause a wreck if steering goes out while in twon or on the highway.

On 6/20/2011 i was driving down a major road with my grandson in the back seat in a child safety seat. without warning my steering wheel started jumping and pulling hard to the left. the steering was stiff and hard to pull back to the proper direction. then it pulled so hard that it was at a point i almost put my car into head on traffic or a ditch. i was fortunate enough to find a parking lot to pull into. i turned off my engine and composed myself. i was able to get my car back home. i had no warning of power steering system on my warning system until this problem happened. this is a major problem that needs to be on a recall notice. i have researched this on the internet and i am not the only one that has had this issue. there are many. this could have been a major accident since this was a major road (hwy146). we took my car to ron craft chevrlet for the repairs within a couple of days. we do not have the part taken off, but i am sure they have this on record. i have the invoice and cancelled check. they replaced the electric steering motor. i would like to have this on a recall as soon as possible.

Omg i cannot believe nothing has been done about the power steering on the 2007 malibu going out while you are driving. how many complaints are required for something to be done? i thought buy american was going to be the best. gm fooled me. i have had several issues with vibrations, brakes, drums, rotors, steering column gears but this mornings near miss accident just takes the cake. i am driving to work 5:30am on interstate 58 in suffolk, va doing 60 when all of a sudden the wheel jerks me into the next lane of traffic almost driving under an 18 wheeler. i grasp the steering wheel as tight as i can trying to pull back into my lane with the wheel fighting me back and forth. what a horrific experience. i pull off (shaking my --- off) make a phone call, sit for 1/2 hour (still afraid to drive). while the car is idleing the wheel is bouncing back and forth in park. i put it in drive with my foot held tightly on the brake and it is still jumping. put it back in park. build up a little nerve. put it back in drive and start to drive. everything is fine. get to work 5 minutes from there only to find that my car has an electronic power steering? some moron must have dreamt this up and gm needs to correct this horrible power assist crap before someone gets killed if they haven't already. i am not very happy with my chevy malibu and i think a class action lawsuit needs to be filed for all chevy malibu owners to make gm make corrections on this life threatening situation. action needs to be taken now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I own a 2007 chevy malibu i have been having steering failure. research shows recall on later models for same issue but not 2007. the steering will completely fail without notice. i feel this is a very big safety concern and gm says no complaints of my problem. they will investigate but from all research i have done gm will not do anything for this obvious manufacturing defect. i guess when a death occurs they may do something then. who knows i think they should be made to correct the problem. the steering has made a poping noise for a couple of years and now this. after steering fails there is a bell that dings 3 times and then it flashes on radio screen power steering.

Power steering my car kept goin in and out.feb 8 it went out completley and almost caused me to wreck.online research lead me to believe chevrolet is aware of problems with the electronic power steering problems with the malibu.have been many complaints online and called chevys customer service number and local dealership, the car can not be drove due to feeling very unsafe in turns and if it locked up all together.also fromwhat i have read the problem has gotten fixed with consumers out of pocket money and the problem rearise shortley thereafter.

2007 chevy malibu is having problems with the power steering going out when taking right turns. i really did not have this problem until the winter season, not saying that's the cause of the malfunction. in the mornings when i crank up before going to work, the steering wheel will move side to side motion for about 15 minutes. the power steering usually goes out when taking right turns. never had the power steering go out when i turn left. this has been going on every since the early part of december 2010. on the day that it first happened, i pulled to the side of the road an contacted gm about the problem and wanted to know if their were a recall to the specific model. the customer service rep acted as if he never heard of the problem. i did a little research and found that their are other gm cars that have problems with the power steering as well. chevy is fully aware of the problem. i guess that it will have to be national coverage on the news for any action to be taken. this car is in fairly new condition and should not be having these problems. i'm just happy that my girlfriend was not driving at the time. she is very tiny, and not as strong as i. this problem needs to be rectified asap. here is the youtube link of actual footage of this problem happening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly0lrqqx9rq

I was in a crowded parking lot and suddenly lost power steering. i nearly hit a pedestrian because i was in the middle of a turn. the power steering continues to fail without warning. when doing some research online about this i found hundreds of entries of the same problem. there are recalls on other models and other years, just not the 2007 malibu that i have. this electric power steering can fail at any time and is a very dangerous issue. the repair is expensive ($1300.00) and will not prevent additional failures.

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving at an unknown low speed she could hear rattling noises coming from the front end of the vehicle and the steering column. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired. shortly after the vehicle was repaired it was being serviced for routine maintenance by an independent mechanic when she was informed the front passenger side tie rod and steering knuckle needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. upon receiving the vehicle she began to again hear rattling noises coming from the front end and the steering wheel would intermittently become very stiff. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where she was informed the steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure continues. the failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 60,000. the vin was unavailable. sm.

Power steering fails constantly . the only wat to get it to work again is to shut engine off and restart, however this is only works for a very short time(less than 1 mile of driving ) in my research on this problem i have seen gm has recalled several other models(2005-10 cobalt and some pontiacs) for exact same problem. no crash or injuries have occcured yet. we do not drive the vehicle any more than necessary. very difficult to turn corners and manuever parking lots. will be impossible to control on ice & snow. this is an accident waiting to happen. this came on suddenly and without warning.

Steering has been loose while turning left and tighter when turning right since i first got this vehicle. on nov,4 2010 i was pulling out of store and accelerated the steering seems to have locked up and rendered me unable to steer pulled on side of the road to calm down then began driving again when accelerating the steering lock up again. brought vehicle to gm repair shop they said the steering motor and steering shaft were not working properly and need to be replaced.

On several occassion the power steering indicator light comes on. when the driver resort to the manual to find the power steering resoiver, it clearly states its location. the chevy 2007 malibu that the driver owns does not have a power steering resoiver. the dearler was consulted there is a problem because the manual states it has a power steering resoiver but the dealer could not find it. gm was consulted about the matter and said there is a recall and problem but not on the 2007 model. the car has become considerly harder to steer but gm will not as of yet resolve this issue.

I have a 2007 chevy malibu with steering problems. for a long time is has made a popping noise when turning the steering wheel at any speed. i took it to gm several months ago and they made some type of adjustment and it stopped. it has recently started again. a couple weeks ago when driving on the interstate the steering wheel began to move left to right by itself. i could feel the car move also. it will also do this when the car is running idle. it has done this several times now. when this occurred i could definately feel a loss of control with the vehicle. it is my understanding many people are experiencing many steering problems with this vehicle and gm will not do anything about it. they told me the cost to replace the steering column is around $1000 at the owners expense. this is a very serious safety issue and should be recalled and repaired by gm.

2005-2007 chevy malibu steering issue. nhtsa recall #10v073000 pertains to cobalt, this is also a malibu issue and should also be included in the recall as this is the same problem we all are experiencing.
06/02/201080800
I purchased a 2007 chevy malibu in march 2008 and the steering wheel was shaking to the left from the first day i purchased it and when it was checked by the dealer, i was told that it was normal and that it was due to the electronic power steering used in this model as apposed to the hydraulic steering in the previous years. aside from the steering wheel pulling to the left, there was no problem until a month ago when the power steering was locking up and rendering the vehicle steering completely inoperable all of a sudden. i researched the problem on the internet and found that this is a common problem with all 2005 and later chevrolet malibus and that gm refused to remedy the problems that many owners are experiencing. on june 2nd 2010, the power steering on my malibu locked up and seized and it rendered me unable to steer my vehicle and caused me to steer into a road sign and crash. it caused considerable damage to the front of the car as well as the radiator and under carriage of the car. gm has known of the defect, but is unwilling to recall and repair or replace the problem. i was instructed to write this letter and file a clain with the nhtsa to have an investigation lodged in an attempt to have this problem repaired by gm by force. the failure happens now almost every other day and is starting to happen more frequently. the steering locks up all of a sudden with no prior warnings. although if you stop the car, turn it off, and restart the car, the problem goes away, only to happen again at a later time with no warning.the dealer claims that gm has not recalled the problem and that the problem can be fixed for around 1000.00 to replace the steering column and sensor. according to previous owners, they have paid the 1000.00 to have the repair, only to have the same thing happen again in a few months.

I started the car to cool off during a hot day, and the steering wheel started twitching back and forth, and while driving the steering will lock up, or twitch back and forth. i've taken it to 2 chevy dealers and it's going to cost around $900 to fix. they claim that it's a common occurance, and they are constantly fixing this issue.

On my 2007 chevrolet malibu ltz the electronic power steering motor shuts off while driving at anytime, only way to get power back to steering is to shuts off vehicle and restart it, but only works for 5 to 10 minutes again and will do the same thing, almost got into accidents at least 5 times when shuts off while steering, but does go off all the time. took it to 2 chevrolet dealership and both denied to be a safety issue cover by warranty and that i should pay them $980 for repairs. steering rack was replaced twice but the problem was diagnosed later is the steering motor/module. i even contact gm and they acted like they could fix it for me, they even sent me to another dealership in my area for proper diagnosis, i remained them that i knew what the problem was and what was need it to repair but they told me to go ahead and drop my car with them and let them diagnose the problem, 7 days later i got a called form the dealer saying that the repair will cost me around $900 (which i knew that was what they charge). i told them that gm sent me to them and they will contact them, i asked gm again and they said that they receive the work order but they were sorry but they were not going to assist me with my issue because vehicle was over warranty. my car is a 2007 and the first time i complaint was on 2009. when offcourse warranty was still in effect (car has 100,000 miles warranty but only covers engine and transmission). the only reason gm acted like they were concerned was because i filed a complaint with the bbb, because i contact them before i contact the bbb and they refuse even to talk about it. after i filed the complaint with the bbb magically they called me and pretend they were concerned. anyway after they denied to cover the repairs i went to pick my car up and the dealer wanted to charge me $150. i denied to pay because gm sent me i didn't request the diagnosis, i paid it once already. anyway now gm recalls a cobalt with same issue but not malibus. *tr

Yesterday i note that gm will be recalling 1.3 million vehicles owing to a problem with the power steering electric motor with this recall being driven by nhtsa. will the 2007 gm malibu be included? since august 2009, my 2007 gm malibu sedan has developed a clunking noise coming from the steering column. in september, 2009 we had a 'lube kit' installed which was suppose to eliminate the clunking. however during november the clunking noise returned aggravated by periodic error messages that state there may be a problem with the electric steering motor. during servicing on jan 4, 2010 the dealer recommends that the electric motor, steering shaft and column be replaced. however upon several discussions with gm headquarters in oshawa, onto, i am told that there is an unresolved design problem with the mechanism and any replacement at this time will only be temporary. also because of no known serious accidents contributed to the mechanism, there will be no recalls or coverage under warranty. upon reviewing a multitude of complaints on the internet (eg: www.carcomplaints.com, etc.) i note that this is a very common problem with this vehicle and with similar responses from gm. *tr

Chevy needs to widen recent recall of 1.3 million compact cars to include the malibu. i have a 2007 chevy malibu that is currently experiencing all the issues that is included in the recall of the compact cars. my vehicle steering wheel vibrates hard in park at times. on the road, the power steering assist is lost and makes the vehicle hard to hold on the road. there is no warning, the message center displays power steering. took to dealership, they said the power steering motor and steering column needs replacing @ a cost of $750.00. this is a 2007 vehicle, there is no way that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. i have owned several older chevy models, and none of the have this problem. the dealer states that majority of chevy cars made after 2005 has required some type of repair or replacement in the steering area. why is this issue being ignored by chevy? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 45 mph and various speeds the power steering failed intermittently whenever he accelerated and made a left or right turn. he also noticed a clicking noise behind the dashboard and immediately it became difficult to turn the steering wheel. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. he called the manufacturer and a representative gave him a claim number in reference to the failure. the current mileage was approximately 72,800. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

Power steering failure while driving on the highway. i pulled over and turned the car off. it scared me. i turned the car on after awhile and it worked just fine. that was 2 weeks ago and now it does it 1 to4 times while iam driving. they said it would cost 500.00 at my auto shop.. i cant afford that. and my passenger side window wont work. the steering going out is a safety issue for my family. i have 3 kids and i don't like when they are in this car. i paid 16,000.00 for this car. i think i got ripped off. i believe gm should recall this everyone seams to have the same problem.*cw

Worn intermediate steering shaft causing uneven front tire wear, the car not tracking straight (car would track to the left requiring constant steering correction to the right), and a rattling noise would be heard driving over rough roads. the car dealership replaced the intermediate steering shaft to fix the problem. the dealership kept the old part. loss of steering could have occurred if this part had failed. *tr

Purchased 2007 malibu lt used with 29,097 miles with remainder of factory warranty and extended warranty after that. soon after purchase a popping clunking noise became apparent in the steering mostly when turning either direction. put off by dealer until factory warranty void then was told that steering gear in rack & pinion defective ( this was at 42,509 miles) they then replaced the whole rack and pinion assy. no noise for 3800 miles then right back to where we started. finally received appointment for dealer repair shop at 47,096 miles. car was inspected and we were told that intermediate shaft is making the noise but it is not a safety concern and we should be fine driving the vehicle i specifically asked the service desk at the dealer if there might be a safety recall or service bulletin and was told that there were none. your web site shows service bulletin #060232007 that directly pertains to this problem, and also complaint # 10257971 that is precisely what our problem is. this noises we contend with are not some little wimpy things that you can only hear with the windows up, but loud enough for persons standing on the sidewalk or driveway to hear plainly my wife and i are both disabled and we are almost afraid to go anywhere in the vehicle for fear of a breakdown, not to mention anybody riding with us. i was told by the dealer that we would have to pay (again) for more repair to the steering, but that it was an ongoing engineering problem that gm has had for years, and they couldn't (or wouldn't?) guarantee that it (the problem ) wouldn't crop up again later. we would just like to spread the word to other gm owners. *tr

In january of 2009 i purchased a used 2007 malibu from a dealer. i can't remember how many miles were on it then, but, it was under 28,000 miles. at the end of may of 2009 my power steering failed suddenly while pulling into a parking space. i almost hit the car in the next space. after getting back in the car everything was fine for 2 days when it failed again while driving through a turn around, clicking off then on within seconds. i almost hit the car next to me. it is now september 2009. only 4 months after taking it in to a dealership to have it fixed (fixed may 22nd, 2009 / mileage at the time was 31,086), my power steering is failing again. september 18th, pulling into the parking lot at my job the power steering failed and on the 19th, again, on my way to work on a straight away my car started beeping at me and power steering flashed on my display. i have 35,200 miles on my car now and the warranty ends at 36,000. will i have to replace my power steering unit every 4 to 5 months and hope i don't get into an accident? *tr

Bought the car in 2007. no known cause of this problem. electronic steering goes out. steering wheel starts to shake, and jerks back and forth. it causes me to weave from side to side. the car sometimes steers fine, then out of the blue, it acts up again. this is a very dangerous problem. i have found that this is a widespread concern. *tr

I bought the car in december 2007, within 30 days, i took it in for a clunking noise in the steering, when going over bumps @ low speed. also clunks when turning wheel sharply. over a course of 11 months, i took the car in for the same problem 4 times! they replaced steering shafts, columns, lubed, re-aligned, the works! and every time, within 3000 miles, the noise is back. this all started when it was under warranty and continued through past my warranty. i have the extended warranty, but it's a $100 deductible. everytime i took it after the free warranty was up(3 times) i've had to fight with the dealership on having my deductible covered. the service department manager told me it was a common problem with these cars(the steering)and there isn't much they can do about it. i've been all over the internet, only to find out there are alot of the same exact complaints. is this something i have to deal with? it definitely makes me not want to buy gm products. if they are aware of this problem, why can't it be fixed?? *tr

While driving and turning, the power steering failed on my 2007 chevy malibu making turning virtually impossible manually. once i was able to stop the vehicle, i put it in park and tried the steering - no change. i shut off the vehicle and turned it back on and the power steering reset. this has occurred 5 times in the past two weeks. if i am setting still, i can turn the steering wheel completely to the left and the power steering will fail. also i have noticed during driving and still (waiting at a light) the steering wheel tends to pulsate back and forth. i reported this to dealership a month ago when vehicle was oil serviced. they said they found nothing at that time. i see from research there were a lot of complaints with the 2004 model, but cannot find any remedy. after reading other complaints, i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle. i have read where other vehicles have crashed due to this and i prefer to not be involved in an accident thus killing someone in my car or another. *tr

STEERING - RACK AND PINION

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet malibu. when she attempted to make a u-turn she lost power steering without any prior warnings. she drove the vehicle home by making right turns. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the rack and pinion failed. since the warranty does not cover the repair, the estimated cost was $1,188.56. no repairs were made. the current and failure mileages were 60,000.
