When sitting at a stop sign or sitting in drive way after starting vehicle, the power steering trouble light will come on and then the steering wheel will shake for no apparent reason. this has also happened while driving and makes the driving of the vehicle difficult (makes it seems as though there is a flat tire, when there is none!). when i first purchased the vehicle in jul 2011, i put the car into the dealer to get it fixed and they could not find anything wrong. the current mileage of the vehicle is at 83000.

While traveling down the highway the steeringwheel on my 2008 chevy malibu started to shake back and forth by itself . it nearly made me lose control of the car. it now does this at any speed and at any time or driving condition. it will also do it when the car is just sitting still. *tr

My wife, children, and myself were leaving for school and doctor appointment, when pulling out of driveway the steering wheel locked or was very hard to turn, then a warning came across the display of power steering loss. none the less, atleast no one was injured, we backed up into driveway which was a chore with no power steering. when we got back from all of our running i put the car on the computer and it showed no error codes, it didn't even show there had been a loss of communication with the system. i start the car and drove down the road everything seems fine for now. i expect this will happen again and can only hope my wife and children aren't in an accident because of this issue. *tr

Started the car to come out of a parking spot, heard humming/rattling noise. steering wheel started to vibrate then would do rapid half-turns by itself, jerking left and right. shut the car off and restarted. seemed ok for first few minutes then started again. got on the road, driving about 35-40 mpg on highway and it became uncontrollable. could not keep it straight within the lane. almost hit a car in the lane on my right! pulled up to an auto shop near by. they test drove and experienced the issue but explained that with these cars, the technology in them is too advanced and would have to be taken to a chevy dealer. mechanic explained that the matter is quite hazardous and it would be a huge risk driving it now. single mom driving 45 minutes from home with 2 minor children. had to get a tow truck to get back home, 45 minutes away. $$$!! had this vehicle for 11 months only. prior to this issue, had door locks issues as i've ready on other threads and also currently experiencing issues with faulty tire pressure sensor as well. nothing but problems with this car since i've had it. this is my first and very last chevrolet!! *tr

While pressing the brake to slow to turn to the right the esc servicing comes across the dash. i call the service department the next day (cause the incident happened after hours) they tech says next time the light comes on bring it in without turning the car off. for the next several times it happens of course was after hours. i took it in for a oil change, and when leaving the light came on again. i automatically turned around and went back. upon diagnostic testing it shows nothing is wrong and the tech says my car doesn't have anything that would set off this code. can anyone tell me what esc stands for on this model car????? *tr

I just pulled on and started to drive on a winding dangerous mountain road -not yet accelerating 40mph- when all of a sudden my steering wheel would not let me turn, almost frozen, and i am into a right curve! i was fighting the weel to gain control for what seemed minutes but was actually seconds as i slowly put on my brakes while i tried to regain control of the wheel (mind you i am in rush hour traffic on a mt. curve, a concrete wall to my left, a rock outcropping on my right, no shoulder, guardrail begins where the rocks end). when i finally regained control, i still had a hard time steering; steering was unpredictable...intermittent shaking of the steering wheel/sometimes felt like i had lost a bolt on my right rim (for those who did at one time you know what i am talking about)/i had a shimmy on the right like something was not connected/all of a sudden i felt like there was no power steering or control at all (hard to turn the wheel-took some muscle), just not right. my car used to have such control- turn on a dime barely touching the wheel. this steering issue has happened before and mentioned to my mechanic at an oil change but they didn't find anything, even hooked up to the diagnostic machine and everything checked out, wallett lighter. i actually thought i was going out of my mind then read other people were having the same kinds of problems. if this is a known problem, why has it not been recalled? for the mountain that i have to drive every day to and from work, this could prove very dangerous-life threatening... i do not feel safe in my own car i have only had nearly a year now nor have the funds to spend on costly repairs. i am ready to take the bugger back and demand my money back and get a more dependable vehicle. i am done spending money- why this is happening? why no answers or fixes?worse yet, everything check out okay when it keeps happening!

The front of the car shakes when driven over 45 mph. when the steering wheel is turned the oil pressure light blinks and an alert sound briefly chimes. the car is not easy to stear. the service power steering alert appears randomly and goes away when the car is restarted. i have had the car realligned multiple times because the right front tire always wears quickly. there is an undiagnosed oil leak causing the car to smoke from the front passenger side.

My 2008 malibu has a power steering problem. on a daily basis the power steering becomes erratic and fails to react properly under normal driving conditions, usually at highway speeds. while stopped, the steering wheel will turn left and right on its own. when this occurs at hightwasy speed control of the car is dangerous. two hands are needed to keep car in lane and not cross the line into other vehicles. problem began when mileage hit 45,000 miles. occasionally, a chime will occur and indicate power steering in the display but by the time the chime occures the steering problem is gone. this issue is consistent and intermitent on a daily basis. i have researched this problem for chevy malibu and have found that thousands of malibu owners are experiencing this problem. this is not a problem caused by inproper routine maintenance. this steering problem is a failure of a component in the steering assembly that is not subject to routine maintenance. this is a defective part!!! as a percentage of malibus on the road that have this problem i would venture that it is very high and the number is increasing. the electronic assist powersteering in the i4 malibu's is a road handling nightmare and gm has no interest in fixing this problem. i would expect a serious problem like this to be made a recall issue before there is a fatality and then gm and obama motors will be sued for reckless endangerment.

Back in april i started having problems with my driver side lock. it would get stuck. sometimes the door wouldn't even open. i would press the button to unlock the door, and that wouldn't work. i would have to use my key, ans sometimes that didn't work either. i am still having problems with the lock, and pretty much everyday i have to use my key to open the driver side door. i was told to use wd-40 and that sill didn't help. the most recent event with my car is this loud vibrating noise that has been occuring off and on for the past two months. i'v had several people check it out and they say they can't find anything wrong. my car makes the noise while sitting in park, sometimes while i'm driving, or sitting still at a light. about a 1-1 1/2 months ago my wheel wou;d move back and forth. i went to have it checked out and was told that there wasn't anything wrong. my wheel moves more and more. it moves sometimes when i first start my car, while sitting a light, and at various speeds while i am driving. when i turn my steering wheel back in a neutral position sometimes it would turn the other way. today my wheel was moving while i was drivng and my car started moving in the same direction. it was hard to control and it was very scary because i was on the highway. i'm so fed up with this car, and i totally regret buying it. i am probably never going to buy a chevrolet again, even if chevrolet's are all that i have ever owned.

Driving on i 40 at 70 mph steering became erratic and jerking, it took extreme effort to stay in proper lane, pulled to shoulder and stopped. i killed the car and restarted and steering was normal until i exited freeway and there was a short episode of loss of power steering but soon started to work normal. a popping noise is now heard sometimes at slow turning speeds and is not always heard.

Steering wheel shakes intermittently throughout each day for approximately the past 50 days as of may 20, 2011. sometimes occurs when car is initially turned on (shakes quickly to the left and right as if a little child was playing with the steering wheel). shaking will also take place spontaneously while driving at various speeds. on may 10, 2011 passenger side power locks began to malfunction-would not lock or open when using power button inside car or using remote. locking and unlocking had to be done manually by pulling up or pushing down lock.

Steering wheel will wobble left to right while car is stopped, in parked position, at idol. event occurs daily and a noise will accompany the motion at times. wobble motion seems to increase with slight rev of engine. while driving at any given speed and on any road surfaces the steering will jerk from left to right, causing the vehicle to rapidly swirve from side to side. feels like all control could be lost at any given moment. i have a 60 mile commute to and from work and it is extremely frightening as it occurs while other vehicles are in close proximity to mine. i am surprised that i have not been cited for careless and imprudent driving by law enforcement or ultimately killed in a horrible accident. i first mentioned the event to the service department while there for scheduled maintenance. event did not occur upon mechanic test drive, however, their answer was an unscheduled tire rotation that i was responsible to pay for and the event occurred again the next day. the problem was mentioned for the second time with the next scheduled maintenance which included another tire rotation. the mechanic did witness the faulty steering at this time and evidently some torque something or other was recalibrated and the steering angle was readjusted. upon leaving the dealership, the steering was obviously not corrected. i immediately returned to the service department at that time. the technician and i went on a 20 mile drive and unfortunately it ended without any occurances. the mechanic made a comment that it was more than likely the electronic power steering motor that had been recalled in other chevrolet automobiles and he didn't understand why the malibu was not included. i currently have an appointment to leave my car with them so that they may randomly drive it, in hopes to pinpoint the problem. it seems to me that they know exactly what the problem is but want to get as many billable hours of labor out of me in the meantime. not happy!

The power steering is acting up, there is no warning or engine light signals, i have looked up for recall and all i have found in many other chevy malibu owners 2004 -2009 having the power steering issues. in some cases this has cased some of the drivers to lose complete control of their vehicle power steering an result in a crash. today my wife swerved off the road and just barely hit a guard rail and almost ran into the bridge due to the power steering just going out with out any notice and no warning lights. gm has no recall for this but it has been happening to many of people for almost a decade now, what are they wait for someone to get seriously hurt. gm service personnel tell you to turn of the car and a will work again for a little while, what happens when it goes out again? also they said it runs about 800.00 to fix then there are reports of it going right back to not working, this is unacceptable i don't have 800.00, i spent 24,000 on this vehicle i should have to turn my vehicle off to just postpone a serious problem.

2008 chevy malibu with 60,000 miles - i encountered problems with steering- the car was pulling, the steering wheel was moving when the car was stopped. took it to the dealership was told it needed an alignment. had the alignment, the problem got worse. took it to another mechanic was told it was the steering column. when they called the dealer to order the parts, the dealer advised them that they see this problem 3-4 times a week on the malibu, but never told me about it. the steering column was replaced at a cost of $1300, yet the problem is still not resolved. we were also told that this particular part is also the same part used on the pontiac g6 which has been recalled, yet there is no recall on the chevy malibu.

The power steering in the vehicle jumps from left to right going down the road. it is very hard to maintain your lane when this happens. it happens at all different points whether the car has been running or just started, it can last up to 30 min. quit then start again it is very unsafe. my cayaltic converter has also gone out in this car. it looses tranmission power, doesnt accerlerate propmtly. when we first got the car we had it in the shop for the back trim leaking, trunk release not working, the car wouldnt start do to the aftermarket alarm the dealer ship placed on it, and the paint peeled. no i am having major issues and it is out of warranty. i wll never buy another chevy. this was the worst mistake ever and thos car is unsafe to drive

On august 30th my power steering light came on, i read the manual and discovered this car doesn't have power steering fluid, it has an electric power steering motor. 5 days later my steering wheel started jerking continuously while parked and while driving, it was difficult to drive. i took my car to the dealership and they said the power steering motor had gone out and it happens quiet often on these cars just as the cobalts. the cost was $465, i contacted gmc and they would not help at all, i told them i found several complaints online and that i think the power steering motor needs to be recalled on this model also and they said they do not track stuff like that. the car had 65,600 miles at failure.
10/12/201045000
The power steering motor on our 2008 chevrolet malibu has gone out with only 45,000 miles on the car. this causes the car to pull right to left violently while the wheel is trying to center itself. this requires the driver to fight the wheel at times to keep it centered on the road. this type of system failure is unsafe and dangerous for any driver. given gm's history with other vehicle recalls for the same issue, the chevy malibu should be included.

2008 chevrolet malibu power steering issues. issues began occurring at approximately 32,000 miles. problem will appear and disappear at any speed, including while stopped, without warning. while stopped, the steering wheel will rapidly oscillate left and right on its own approximately 20 degrees. the best analogy is that it is shivering or shaking uncontrollably. also, while driving at any speed the steering wheel will suddenly go from a smooth range of motion to a range of motion with only a few very distinct and segmented directions. typically the two choices are left of center or right of center with no smooth motion in-between. these issues can last anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds to 30 minutes. if the problem does not correct on its own, it can be corrected by turning off the car and then restarting the car. car now has approximately 37,000 miles and the power steering issues described above are occurring more frequently and lasting for longer periods of time.

My 2008 chevy malibu 1lt has several problems, let me explain. first the problem was a slight clicking, popping in the steering column when turning the wheel, then it starting doing it every time i slightly turn the wheel you can feel it through the steering column, nothing bad but its annoying, then suddenly within a couple months of that my power locks suddenly started going up and down by themselves periodically whether it's parked or being driven, locked me out two times, i was late for work because i had to call door unlocking service, also the manual locks on the door used to lock and unlock won't work at all, you have to manually use your hand, then to beat it all my seatbelt wont lock i tryed to click it but it wont even go down hardly at all, this is only the seatbelt in the drivers side. this is a real bad safety issue and the law in ky (click it or ticket) so far thats all i can say is going on for now. i do know this for a fact i will never buy a chevrolet.

My son's 2008 chevy malibu is having problems with the steering column suddenly shaking and jerking back and forth while driving and occasionally while in park. the brake lights will also come on without him pressing on the brake and disengage the cruise control, if it is on. we have had a switch replaced that was faulty, but it did not fix either problem. now we have been told that the steering unit needs to be replaced.

I own a 2008 chevy malibu with electronic power steering. while driving or at a stop, the steering wheel will either shake or suddenly pull to the left or right. i had it in the dealership for repairs and they replaced a steering colum that needed to be replaced but that did not fix the steering. the dealership believes that it is the electronic power steering itself even though nothing is saying that it is defective. with the problems with electronic power steering in chevy cobalts for 2004 to 2009, i'm concern that the issues with electronic power steering may not be just in one model car but the compontent itself.

One week ago i noticed my steering wheel would shake back and forth when idling. i thought the fluid may be low and looked to fill it only to find out the car has electric steering. i drove it to work without issue but now the shaking has begun to appear when driving at all speeds. it is an uncanny shimmy that can be controlled but requires constant attention and a firm grip. it happens frequently enough(every 10 min or so) that it has become worrisome. a call to the dealer evoked the response of , yes, that happens sometimes with this model and it can be fixed in a day or two and cost is around $1000. my car has 75000 miles on it and is not under warranty. this is not the type of issue that should be a consumer problem.

2008 malibu with 41k miles has steering issue with steering wheel shaking left to right at hwy speeds. have to fight to keep car straight in own lane. no noticable incident leading up to issue, just felt like there was no steering assist. happens on a daily basis. nothing done as of yet, but will be calling dealer tomorrow. after searching the internet, this seems to be an issue with the electronic steering assist. remedy appears to be to replace the steering column module. at a cost of $800+, this is no cheap replacement.

Difficult to turn at low speeds, steering wheel shaking and shimmies left, clunking or rubbing noise. had steering column lubed, new rack and pnion installed and still doing it.

I have had my 2008 chevy malibu in the garage now 3 times for the same recurring problem. my steering wheel shimmies and then locks up and it's very hard to steer. if i weren't as strong in my hands and arms, i would be dead! it comes and goes but it is a persistant problem that they cannot or will not fix. i was told that they cannot fix something that they didn't diagnose as broke and was told it would be too expensive to just start replacing parts randomly that might be the problem. i am very scared to drive my car but have to make a living and am a single mom. i feel this is putting me and my sons life in danger!!!!!!!! there needs to be a recall on this problem in the steering!
01/18/2009
I have a 2008 chevy malibu lt.in march of this year the steering wheel started to jerk left and right while driving.it would also jerk while being stopped and while in park.there is also a popping sound or a clunking sound like a bad universal while turning and/or backing up.i noticed this about january of '09. the dealer replaced the brakes and rotors on the front, but the problem did not go away.on 5/12/10 the dealership replaced the left front strut and mount and the intermediate steering shaft.this did not correct the problem.the jerking in the steering wheel comes and goes,it will run fine for a while they itwill start up for a while.there is no warning when this will happen.on 5/30/10 and 5/31/10 the power steering liight came on in the information center.i called gm to see if there was a recall on this and there is not.i told them that this is a safety concern and should be looked at.they said that they were looking into it. i went to the consumer affairs web ste and seen that this has been a problem since the '05 malibus (ps control module).there were at least 7 complaints for the '08's on this site that i nocticed.about a year ago there was a problem with the door locks not working properly, they would not unlock when the car was put into park nor would the remote work on them.when the left rear door outside handle was used to open the door the door would lock.the dealership could not duplicate the problem.this concerns me because the power steering is electric in this car.
04/27/201043000
I am at about 45k miles on my 2008 chevrolet malibu. my console warning of power steering came on and with it my steering wheel shakes when i start the car. i don't drive or put it in gear it just shakes! after being told i do not have power steering fluid a gm service dealership told me it sounds like my electronic motor for power steering sounds like it needs to be replaced. the cobalt was just recalled for such a problem. i called gm to see if there was a recall for the malibu and was told .....at my expense, i need to have the problem diagnosed, then call them back with the ref# they gave me, and then they will put it in their records!!!! calling and requesting that a recall be put in place was basically ignored. i have explained that if they were to investigate just the blogs about the malibu they would see thousands of people are having this problem, but are told to fix it themselves. this is really dangerous on so many levels. i have not had an accident, because i am scared to drive most of the time, but i am recording every one of my complaints, because god forbid i get hurt, or worse yet, one of my children, then my lawyer is ready to rip gm apart! i lost my job about a year ago, and for a company who just got bailed out with my tax money, they should think twice before smacking their customers with such arrogance and stupidity.

My 2008 chevrolet malibu lt will shake violently from side to side and becomes virtually uncontrolable. the first time it happened was in april 2009 with about 2 k miles.i took it to the dealer, they scanned it but no codes were present. the mechanic found a service bulliton where a brake pad problem was refered to regarding this shaking problem, so he replaced the front pads and resurfaced the rotors. the problem reaccured in feb. 2010 with approx. 40 k miles. i again took it in but they said there was nothing wrong. yesterday 4-10-10 on my way to work it happened again at approx. 70 mph, i thought i was going to crash ! what am i to do ?

Steering problem with 2008 chev malibu. while driving the steering wheel will go back and forth and hard to control steering. also, sometimes when engine is on and car not moving the wheel will shake and go back and forth on both sides. have had the car to a chev dealer and they say there is nothing wrong with the car and everything is solid. also had a wheel and tire check it out and they said the same thing but they say it may be in the rack and pinion system. it is very scary when you have trouble controlling the vehicle.

The steering will suddenly vibrate and cause me to lose control of the car and as a result i have almost gotten into a few accidents.. it happens without warning. the manfacture has a bulletin about this problem but refused to fix it. i then went to a local mechanic who was able to download the correct information into the power steering module. i believe this should be a recall and force the manfacture to correct all effective cars and not get away with refusing to fix it and thus make it look like there is no problem

A recently purchased 2008 chevy malibu lt has some serious steering issues, (this car has electric steering) when driving at low or high speeds the wheel feels like it is fighting against you, it feels like there is a lot of resistance there. also at idle with your foot on the brake the wheel will pulse back and forth, left and right without touching the wheel. i informed the dealer who said it is out of warranty (44,000miles) and couldn't do anything even though he acknowledged there are some issues with the car. scared to drive. please help! *tr

I drive a 2008 malibu. 95% of my driving is done on the freeway. i have 55k miles on the car and the steering started to shake and get stiff for no apparent reason. i live in ohio and the winters get cold. i first thought that this might be the cause of it but, after reading some blogs on the internet i found that this seems to be a problem no matter where you live. i went to my car dealer and he told me that it is not covered because of my mileage. i do not consider this to be the normal wear and tear of a car and i am afraid that if i don't get this fixed i will be injured from failure to control my car. sometimes i will drive down the road and all of a sudden the steering wheel locks up to where i have to pull on it hard to free it up. the only coarse of action that i see that i can take to correct the failure is pay gm to fix their problem that was not a result of abuse or natural wear and tear since they have not issued a recall. if who ever reads this would simply just google this topic you will see that this is becoming a growing problem that will result in injuries if gm does not recall it. *tr

I have a 2008 chevy malibu, with 42,000 miles and it has electric power steering and it seems that the power steering is about to go out. a message has only appeared once on the indicator screen in the dash about the power steering, but the steering wheel continuously shakes and it steering feels like it wants to lock up. now my check engine light is on. the diagnostics says it has to do with the cam actuator sensor???? *tr

I was driving approx 45 miles per hour on a one lane road. my car dic displayed power steering the wheel began to shake, pulled to the left and became very hard to steer, almost making me hit the car in oncoming traffic, the lady driving the other vehicle swerved onto the shoulder which prevented the accident. i shut the car off. a mechanic friend of mine came to my location and could not find any issues with the vehicle because apparently the electric assist power steering resets once the vehicle is shut off. this incident could have been tragic and by the grace of god it was not. after checking on the internet my understanding is i am not a sole individual experiencing this type of problem with the 2005 and newer chevy malibu. please prevent these type of occurrences from continuing before someone is killed. *tr

Appears to be a problem with the electric power steering/steering assembly. steering will be smooth then all of a sudden the steering wheel will jerk to the left and right and become very loose like you have no control of the steering. when this happens the car tends to steer left. this happens frequently during driving and while stopped the steering wheel will move left and right. have taken it to dealer one time but the problem still persists. *tr

2008 chevrolet malibu 260 miles purchased on 7-21-08 on 7-22-08 received warning light service traction and service sce pulled to the side and look in manual description of problem. manual said service as soon possible. car was running very sluggish and abs brakes were chattering when applied. car seemed like it would not shift gears. took to dealer asap. dealer said the problem was from a low charge on the battery. dealer had car for 2 days. did not drive car again until 7-28-08. drove 4-5 miles and service traction and service sce warning lights came on. drove to dealer approx 2 miles. when i got to the dealer, the left front abs brake was smoking was very hot, almost seemed like it would burst into flames. hubcap had wilted on wheel. left car a dealer, received call from dealer saying the problem was probably due to steering wheel being adjusted to the lower position, causing the steering assembly to press against the brakes. if this is the case it sound as like a design flaw. since people always lower the steering column to a lower position. dealer was ordering parts and would car for 4-5 days. parts to be ordered was a pad for the steering column (band aid) new hub cap. *tr
