I am filing this report on behalf of the vehicle owner. owner name is cathie dakel. i am a private electric vehicle service person, and have identified two software defects in the battery pack management system used in the 1997-1998 model chevrolet s-10ev electric truck. the vehicle noted in this complaint had been completely destroyed by a fire that began while the vehicle was charging at a public vehicle charging station. i believe the fire was a result of one of the two known software program defects. i had previously contacted general motors regarding these suspicions, and have not received a reply as to whether they have interest in investigating the fire, and if the software program defects will be resolved. this is the third of three vehicle fires occurring during charging within a six month period. *tr

Hi i originally purchased a 1998 chevrolet s10 used private party and noticed a check engine light on and my brother scanned the computer and found it was a transmission problem and was informed by my brother it had been rebuilt literally 2 months before purchased and was shown proof when driving highway speeds it shifted into 3rd by itself and was forced to drive 25 miles doing 50 took it to gm and was informed it was a pressure problem and was recommended a tranny rebuild and then they called the car a piece of @#$%^ and wasn't worth it i personally love the truck and then they said it would be 2500 dollars. i continue to drive it with check engine light on and was informed the transmission will eventually lock me out of it, also when hot it sounds literally like a tractor on excel and steady speed if any one has any answers please email. *tr

Began experiencing loud exhaust noise and loss of power in 1998 s-10 pickup in july of '07. had catalytic converter replaced. again began experiencing loud exhaust and loss of power in april 2008. pickup totally stalled out in middle of busy intersection once, nearly stalled on several other occasions. was advised by acquaintance that there was a special policy issued by gm (05021a) that covered the exhaust system. researched the special policy and found out that i should have received a mailing in may 2005 notifying me of a potential failure of my exhaust system, i never received the mailing. called gm customer service, was advised to bring it to a gm dealership for diagnosis. took vehicle to gm dealership and was advised that it was a piece of

My 1998 chevrolet s-10 has a failed catalytic converter, and it only has 70,000 miles. it is my suspicion that the catalytic converter was cooked by a defect in the workmanship of the construction of the car. less than one year before failure the exhaust manifold was separated from the rest of the system, causing the o2 sensor to react and enact a fuel/air mixture that cooked the catalytic converter. chevrolet dealer says the catalytic converter is no longer under warranty because it has been over 8 years. *ak

On my 1998 chevy s-10 both of the tailgate cable broke. the cables broke and the wood i was loading slid off and hit my foot it did hurt it, but luckily it was not bad. it also damage my tailgate on my truck. i have see on the internet and from other people about there tailgate cables breaking. i have seen it on 1995, 1998 and 2000 s-10 trucks. i think that gm needs to make replacement cables this very dangerous and if you were loading something it could slid off the tailgate and hurt themselves like i did. thank you, nathan hooker. *nm

Both cables on my 1998 chevy s-10 pick-up have snapped. my dog was using a ramp that rested on the tailgate when it happened. it caused the ramp to fall a few inches luckily the dog was uninjured however he is very frightened to use the ramp now. he weighs over 150s so i can't lift him. i went to the local auto parts store to get new cable when i was told about the recall on other similar vehicles. i have put off repairing this in anticipation of a recall. *jb

Driver's side cable that supports the tailgate rusted out and broke suddenly due to corrosion inside the coating. with the tailgate down, i was climbing back out of the truck, stepping back off the tailgate when it snapped suddenly. i am over 65 years old, and when it gave, i almost fell off. i do not understand why nhtsa has not required chevrolet to make a recall and provide 1998 s-10 owners with repair of the obviously faulty cables.

Tl-the contact owns a 1998 chevrolet s-10 pickup. the contact stated that when he turned on the windshield wipers, they did not function properly. sometimes they would work for a brief time and shut off and other times, they would function properly. he would have to stop the vehicle and tap on the motor with a hammer or screwdriver to get the wipers to function; sometimes it worked, other times, it did not. the contact called the dealership and was told that the repairs could be performed at his expense. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 71,000. the failure mileage was approximately 55,000-bk

The wipers on my 1998 chevrolet s-10 frequently stop operating and when they do come back on they will not turn off. they have shut down during a rain and have caused me to have to pull out of traffic when i could and wait for them to come back on, most times they have to be turned off completely, and sometimes will not come back on. i believe this is a serious safety hazard and should be recalled. *tr

I drive a 1998 chevy s-10. everytime it rains, the windshield wipers stop working. i instantly go blind, and pull off the road/highway as fast as possible. the 1995-1997 chevy s-10 has a recall on the exact same problem due to a faulty wiper motor circuit board. the description fits my problem exactly. this defect has a nhtsa campaign id number: 03v159000. my truck was manufactured in november 1997. when i called up chevy, and told them of the problem, they said that it shouldn't be doing what it is doing. the chevy rep. said that my truck, manufactured in november 1997 was not included in the recall. it should because my windshield wipers freeze at the slightest bit of rain. i have not gotten this problem fixed yet. *tr

I recently purchased a 1998 chevy s10 pickup truck. the windshield wipers exhibit the exact behavior described in nhtsa saftety recall bulletin #03023--the wipers only work intermittently, obviously dangerous here in rainy washingon state. it is my strong belief this vehicle should be included in the recall which now only covers 1995-1997. i would guess it is highly likely this '98 has the same wiper motor circuit board installed as the previous years had.
