Defect SummaryVehicle description: certain 4-wheel drive pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles equipped with abs (antilock braking system) manufactured from september 1989 through august 1996. under certain driving conditions the switch which signals the abs system whether the vehicle is in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive can malfunction causing increased stopping distances during abs stops while in the two-wheel drive mode.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurred at a time when minimum stopping distance was required, a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace or repair the 4-wheel/2-wheel drive switch.
NotesThe first phase of owner notification letters began may 31, 2000,with the last mailing completed by october 2000. owners can contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Defect SummaryThis is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. vehicle description: certain light duty pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, or minivans equipped with 3-sensor abs (antilock braking system) ebc4 units.
Consequence SummaryThese vehicles can experience extended stopping distances during abs stops on certain multiple surfaces, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will modify the computer program which operates the abs unit on some vehicles, or replace the computer on others to improve the performance of the abs on these surfaces.
NotesOn vehicles which required the computer program to be modified, owner notification has began.for vehicles which require a new computer module, gm has scheduled owner notificatiion to begin during the last week of may 2000.a phased mailing will be required, with the last mailing scheduled to be completed by december 2000.owners can contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.

Have had problems with the windshield wipers from the beginning. i would be driving in pouring-down rain and the wipers would go out causing me to have to pull over. right now they do not work at all. i had to work on my brakes the first year and a couple of times thereafter. i recently had to have my air-conditioner done. the latest was my water pump that i fixed myself. the worse was my motor. i had been stalled a number of times till finally it wouldn't go at all. i had it towed to michael holley chevrolet in lakeland (the town i worked in). they refused to honor my smartcare saying i had not changed the oil. that was not true since i had changed it myself and had it changed also. they wanted over 3000 for a new motor. i am and was still paying on my truck and did not have that much cash. i had to tow it at my mothers and park it. i was able to change the oil and noticed that the chevrolet dealers had removed the alternator belt and had left it loose. that did not give me any confidence in them. 4 months later my mother's car was totalled and she paid for me to get a motor from an amoco dealer. in september of 1999 my mother was surfing the net and found out that there had been recalls on this vehicle almost from the first and i have never been notified at all. i wrote to the home office in early september but received no answer. i still owe 2 years payments. if i had been traveling on the highway when my motor went out on me something bad could have very well happened. i feel sure that i will never trust in chevy's products again.

When coming upon a stopped vehicle ( approx 10 carl length ahead of my car ) i was traveling at about 25 to 30 mph when i applied my brakes to gradually slow down but all i got was a vibration from the brake pedal but no braking. i continued a firm push on the brakes but rolled into the stopped vehicle without any slowing of my vehicle. i held the pedal down solid with no pumping. the truck in front of me sustained little if any noticeable damage. i had to be towed.

...for 3 years chevrolet dealers told me there was nothing wrong with abs. then in 2000, received recall notice labeled campaign #c99046. on 03/28/2000 took vehicle into dealership. bill states reprogram pcm for new antilock program ...called chevrolet customer assistance center today, because brakes failed today the same way they did before repair in 2000. ...i explained the s10 had been brought into dealership on 03/28/2000, as soon as i received recall notice, and that it appeared replacement was defective. ...i was advised that campaign ended 12/2002. when i reiterated that i had work done within parameters of campaign, but now same problem had reoccurred, i was advised it didn't matter, the campaign ended 12/2002. ...when i sarcastically said, so if i kill someone on way to dealership tomorrow because of abs failure, you're not responsible? the response was: only if it happened before 12/2002.

On a dry well traveled road with an emergency vehicle approaching an intersection from the right, i applied my brake (non panic) and at first braking was as expected. then pedal went down and braking action was lost. the same problem has occurred at least 5 times before over the years. my dealership in california has on two occasions attempted to recreate the problem but at a problem rate of once a year the likelihood of this occurrence in a 20 minute period is poor. the dealership can not find any abs malfunction. the abs was reprogrammed 2 years ago per a service bulletin without correcting the problem. gm has refused to take effective action to fix this problem. gm points out that many conditions can cause the abs mode to be activated. my arguement is that my s10 should not require 3 to 4 times the normal stopping distance to stop.*ak

Today (11/21/00) was the third time i've experienced brake failure due to problems with the anti lock braking system in my 1996 chevrolet s10 pickup. during certain, specific situations, the abs will decide not to apply the brakes, allowing the vehicle to continue to roll forwards. the road conditions under which this occurs are as follows: 1) slow speed; generally less than 10 mph. 2) wet, slick pavement that abruptly changes to dry pavement and then back to wet pavement. in these situations, the abs can be heard and felt cycling but no stopping power is available. the only way to stop the vehicle in this situation in a reasonable distance is to apply the parking brake and lock up the rear wheels. the first two occurrences, which did not result in an accident, took place approximately 1 1/2 years ago while the vehicle was under warranty. the s10 was taken to a chevrolet dealer (groth brothers, livermore, ca 94550) who checked the abs system and said there was no problem. the third occurrence happened on 11/21/00 and resulted in me rear-ending a vehicle stopped at a stop light. --i approached the red light at which a vehicle was stopped. i was traveling less than 10 mph and the road was wet but i had plenty of room to stop (or so i thought); at least 50 feet! as i applied the brakes for a leisurely stop (didn't pump them, just an even, steady firm pressure), i could feel the abs system begin to cycle. at this point, no stopping power was available at all and i rolled into the car ahead of me at the red light. because of the slow speed, no damage was incurred. before you chock this up to operator error or a driver (me) who does not understand abs, consider this; i have had much practical use and experience with abs systems. besides having an engineering degree and being fairly adept at operating a variety of equipment (cars, tractors, motorcycles, boats and airplanes), i am a pilot for a major us airline and operate aircraft equipped with abs s

Found outer brake pads worn down to metal during routine tire rotation, at 21500 highway miles, with no prior warning. dealer says i was lucky as he has received many similar complaints at much lower mileage. dealer says this is due to removal of asbestos from pad material and gm undersizing the rotors. in addition, the wear indicators are located on the inner pads which wear at a much slower rate, as in my case. the underdesign of this brake system is a safety hazard and gm's responsibility. gm needs to be made to conduct a recall to replace calipers, rotors and pads with a safe design before someone gets killed!
