When i really need my brakes as in a panic stop situation they are not there. the other day a deer ran in front of me and i hit the brakes hard and the abs like shut my brakes off. luckily i was able to swerve off the road and no damage was done. also on snow or ice i hate driving this truck because the slightest pressure on the brake pedal will render the brakes useless. i don't drive fast and am aware of stop signs on the way home. i slow down way before the sign and still go right through it as if i have no brakes. this is a great truck except for the fear i have of not having any brakes when i need them. i just know that sooner or later an accident will happen.

The brake line on my 1997 chevy s-10 burst leading to total loss of braking capability ...luckily there was no accident ... an emergency repair at a nearby station cost me $800 ... they replaced only one side of braking system (the side that burst) ... i tried to contact chevy to get them to repair the other side (that will likely burst) and they said no - not covered. *tr

The anti-lock brake failure started approx.feb/march in 1999 and was reported to dealership without help of resolution. the brakes have acted up numerous times but i have been able to avoid a collision to date. the are still not fixed because the dealership has told me that it would cost approx. $500-700 depending on the problem. at the time the first news report of a recall on the s-10 vehicles were made, my vehicle was only 2,000 miles out of warranty. now it is 32,000 because i was driving 40,000 miles a year to work and home. also, the news reports did say my model year of 1997 in one of the reports. i need help. this should not be happening. the transmission or clutch failure happened yesterday. it's in the shop for determination and repair. is there a recall on the transmissions also? i care for my vehicles with regular maintenance through dewey's auto center, a goodyeard dealer in fenton, michigan 810/629-2278. please advise asap. thank you. *ak

02/01/1997 | |||
The vehicles anti lock brakes seem to (at random) engage far to early under normal braking conditions causing increased stopping distances and near misses. several times when approaching an intersection at speeds between 35 and 40 mph and the lights change, when applying normal braking pressure to stop the truck the brake pedal will drop to the floor and the abs brakes kick in extending the stopping distance to dangerous distances as a result. if the brakes had remained normal and the abs not engaged the truck would have stopped in the normal amount of distance for that speed. in short i can stop my 69 cadillac faster at times than i can this pickup truck. the truck has been to the dealer a few times now for this problem and they say there is nothing wrong with the brakes. however i did recently notice that up to the 1996 model year for the s-10 the trucks are being recalled for a abs problem.....i think that needs to be extended to the 97 model year as well.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 1997 chevrolet s10 pickup. while driving at speeds of 10 mph and approaching a stop sign applying the brakes, the brake fluid abnormally leaked from the vehicle. he was able to slowly drive the vehicle to his residence and then to a local independent mechanic. the mechanic found the brakes lines were corroded. the brake lines were replaced and the brakes were bled. the contact believed nhtsa campaign id number: 97v146001 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) to be directly related to the failure but was unable to confirm if his vin was included with the recall. the failure mileage was 93,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. updated 06/21/10 *bf

While lubricating the front steering mechanism, i noticed that the passenger side, front hydraulic line has been damaged (i.e., pinched) by the steering and/or suspension system. although the line has not failed at this point, i believe other owners should be aware of possible damage to hydraulic lines caused by steering/suspension components on the 1997 2.2l chevrolet s10.

Abs booster pump failed while driving approx 70mph on freeway in heavy traffic causing loss of approx 99% of braking effeciency. am original owner of vehicle and is not used by any other individual. braking system has not been abused. i feel this is a defective part and is extremely critical to safe operation of the vehicle. gm should be required to provide nhtsa with info regarding number of failures of this part.

After only 4 years and less than 77,000 miles, this p/u experienced a failure in the diaphragm inside the brake booster unit. i have owned numerous vehicles for 10 or more years, both domestic and foreign, however, this is the first chevy. it is also the first, out of seven(7) to have this type of failure, period, much less this early. have there been other reports of similar failures in the 1997 s-10 series? if not, can a survey be run to check?

Ea94038, abs braking system failure; when applying the brakes during emergency stopping situation, the truck shutters like it's hitting ice then dry pavement. when applying the brakes a second time, the pedal goes completely to the floor and a strange noise comes from the dash. in the last two weeks the brake booster has been replaced twice by the dealership under warranty. *ak |
