RQ04012GENERAL MOTORS CORP.11/22/200404/14/2005TAILGATE SUPPORT CABLE(S) BREAK
Odi is upgrading rq04-012 and opening an ea to investigate the tailgate support cables installed in 1998 - 2004 model year sonoma and s10 model vehicles.general motors is conducting recall campaign 04v-129 to replace the tailgate support cables originally installed in certain model year 2000-2004 sierras and silverados and certain model year 2002-2004 avalanches and escalade exts (c/k models).general motors has advised odithat the tailgate support cables installed in the subject vehicles were fabricated using identical or similar sheathing material as the recalled vehicles.however, general motors has advised odi that sonoma and s-10 vehicles differ from c/k models in several ways: the vehicle height is lower; the tailgate displacement (drop) when not supported by the cables is smaller and the tailgate comes to rest at a less severe tip angle when not supported by the cables; the tailgate mass is smaller; and the size, payload, and usage characteristcis are less demanding than c/k model vehicles.gm also stated that sonoma and s-10 warranty claim information indicates a lower claim count and a lower claim rate than recalled c/k models.notwithstanding the above information, odi has received an additional 73 non-injury complaints and 10 injury complaints on the subject vehicles during rq04-012 (since november 2004 to date), which justifies opening an engineering analysis to further investigate this issue.

The pickup truck was given to the dealer 2 times already and the interor leakage problem still exists. on the first attempt, the dealer claimed that i left the door open and it was my fault the vehicle leaked. on the second attempt at taking it to the dealer, i sat in their lobby for an hour-and-a-half while they claimed they were fixing the problem. the next day it rained and the vehicle continued to leak. i am contacting the dealer tomorrow for a third attempt at repair.

There has been a persistent problem with the tailgate on this truck from day 1. driving down the street and for no apparent reason the tailgate pops open. i have had this happen so often that i now use bungee cords to keep the tailgate shut in case the latch fails. i have had dealers twice do warranty work on this, but they haven't really found the problem yet. the latch looks normal, everything seems to line up, but you never know when the tailgate is going to flop open. usually when i'm pulling a trailer, but often not.. my theory is that the frame and body are so flexible that tolerances open up and pop, the latch no longer holds. hope you guys have some kind of a handle on this problem. thanks-- jms

I have a 1998 chevy s-10 and the left tailgate cable broke. it broke when i opened the tailgate and sat down on it. i did not get hurt but i think a cable needs to be able to hold some weight. i have heard that the cables retain moisture which causes them to rust out and mine was rusted. i left the cable on and it damaged the tailgate by putting a dent in it and cracking the paint. i cut the cable so it would not damage the tailgate any more. my brother told me i could use his cable from his tailgate and i am. i think that it should be recalled as this is a safety problem. i heard they might recall this so i decided to put my input because someone could get hurt. i also bought replacement cables, but there is no way to put them on because gm uses a big rivet. i have heard of other people's cables on their 95-2003 s-10's. thanks.*jb

I own a 1998 chevrolet s-10. the cables that hold up the tailgate broke on me while i was loading cargo into the bed. the broken straps has since caused my tailgate to fall off while going down a rough road. the tailgate is now scratched and dented from the initial breaking and from falling off. i have not made any attempt to fix this problem as of yet. *nm

Dt: consumer stated that the tailgate cable snapped with very light weight on it. at the time the cable snapped there was a child on the tailgate. this was on the right side, but the left side carried the weight. the owner was concerned that he will not be able to trust the tailgate at this point. the owner was going to replace the tailgate cables and maybe the whole tailgate itself. the cables were fine. there were not any wear and tear on the cables. the owner called the dealer, and they were unable to provide any assistance. the owner also called gm, and they contacted the manager, who relayed any assistance in this matter. they were no injuries.*ak
