Windshield wipers work only intermittently or not at all. problem is exacerbated by bumpy roads. online research shows this is apparently a common problem related to cracked solder joints on the wiper control circuit board, a problem for which two recalls have already been issued by chevrolet but which do not extend to the 1998 model year. wipers will often shut off unexpectedly while driving in heavy rain. obviously, this is a serious safety issue and the previous recalls that only cover up to 1997 need to be extended to cover later model vehicles which suffer from the same safety problem. (the incident date in this complaint is a random date selected shortly after i purchased the vehicle and around the time i first noticed the problem. this issue is ongoing and has become increasingly severe since then.)

I have a 1998 chevrolet s-10 pickup and it has a recurring fault with the windshield wiper motor. at various intervals, with no warning, the windshield wiper will fail to operate. this has happened numerous times, often during rain and causes me to pull over to either wait out the rain or for the motor to unexpectedly restart. in my research, i have found that 1995-1997 chevrolet s-10 pickups had the same problem and were recalled. it was a wiper motor circuit board problem which lead to the recalls. i feel the 1998 pickups should be recalled as it seems to be a problem with others on the mycarstats.com message board. *tr

1998 s-10 ext cab - rear window- winter safety problem. i live in upstate new york and in the winter snow laying in the bed of the pickup blows up on the rear window and sticks to it so there is no visibility out the rear window. i thought vehicles in new york were required to have rear window defrosters! having an extended cab truck is no different from having a car and since there are more truck like vehicles on the road today they shouldn't be exempt. i could see is the truck had a sliding glass rear window that a defroster wouldn't be pratical but my truck just has a plain glass window the same as a car. this is a dangerous safety problem in the northern climates and i assumed that when i bought the truck that it would be required to have a rear window defroster.*ak

Driving in the rain the windshield wipers fail at random positions. the last incident happened on a country road where there was no shoulder to pull off on to. a very dangerous situation because the drivers visibility was severely restricted to on coming traffic. this failure was on a recall status for the 1996 and 1997 chevrolet s10 models but not included in the 1998 models. failure of the wiper circuit board. the problem is known to exist but gm will not honor free replacement of the defective part because of a stated age date even though the vehicle has less than 37,000 miles on it. *jb

My wipers quit whenever they feel like it, especially in a pouring rain, or they will not come on at all! there is also a problem with them not going off when turned off. i hit a deer because the wipers would not turn off after using the window washer to clean my window in my garage. after many attempts to turn them off, i proceeded to drive the 20 miles to my job site. on the way, i hit a deer. it could have been much worse, the oncoming pickup could have been what i hit. please, this is a very dangerous situation! after reading 21 pages of complaints about the same thing, i would think that someone would take this as a serious subject.

When activated, windshield wipers operate erratically and may shut off without warning. the erratic behavior happens throughout the year but appears worse (especially shutting off unexpectedly) in warm weather. recently i have found that turning the wipers to high will usually restart them after they shut off. erratic behavior during intermittent operation includes multiple wipes (sometimes more than 10) per cycle. this problem has been present for approximately the last 30,000 miles (i am currently at 72,500). i am estimating the incident date below around the first time i noticed the problem. the date is accurate +/- 6 months. i have not yet contacted the dealer about the problem. i am planning to do so either today (1/2/03) or tomorrow.

Windshield wipers fail to operate at times and at other times they won't shut off - mechanic has said this is very common is chevys and seems to be related to a faulty control module which tends to crack and allow water into the module which will keep the wipers from functioning properly only when there is rain, fog, humidity. seems to be related to the recall issued in 1996 but did not extend to later models.

Windshield wipers.this is evidentually a defective part if it fails within 3yrs, and is replaced at owner expense, sometimes going through several expense before corrected. componet wiper mogular fails causing on visability with rain, fog-up, etc. while vehicle is moving, causing total suprise and emergency action to avoid collision, run off road, as you cannot see. something should be done as some drivers cannot react safely. thanks. *ak

Windshield wipers fail to operate at times and at other times they won't shut off. the local chevrolet dealership replaced a the multi function switch which still hasn't corrected the problem. the service manager stated that they have replaced several of those switches in the past but would not commit to a number. i also own a 1998 gmc jimmy which is the same basic vehicle. it is experiencing the same type of problems which leads me to believe there is a wide spread problem. i also spoke with another jimmy owner who reported wiper problems also. i contacted chevrolet customer service and reported the problem. i believe if you check you will find that many gmc and chevrolet vehciles have experienced wiper related problems. in addition, both of my vehciles have oil leaks coming from the hoses that go from the engine to the remote oil filter assembly. i am told by a gm dealership employee that this is a common problem. i appreciate your attention in this matter. thank you! *ak

Windshield wiper sporadically fails to function. when wiper control is switched on wiper will sometimes function and sometimes not function. this is very hazardous in rainy conditions and has almost caused me to collide with other vehicles on more than one occasion. i have absolutely no confidence that my wiper will work for any period of time. this defect very closely resembles and recall notice sent out to owners of 95-97 chevrolet s-10 owners in which they offer to repair the defect at no charge. since my vehicle was labeled as a 98 model year chevrolet they will not do nothing for me in spite of the fact that it could have just as easily been labeled a 97 model. i have filed a complaint with gm at 1800-222-1020 (my service request number 1-120539042). they informed me that they will only be able to assist me if enough complaints come in to them to warrant a recall on the 98 model year s-10. *ak

Windshield wipers quit working. sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. we almost had an accident when spraying the windows while driving and the wipers refused to come on. this happened several times, and we finally had to have the module replaced. the chevrolet dealer told us that they have had more than the usual number of people with 1998 s10s with problems but they can do nothing about it unless the company orders a recall. we believe the recall through 1997 should be extended to the 1998 model. our truck only has 34000 miles on it. it cost us 139.11 to have this fixed. we could have had an accident on the road, but luckily it was an isolated area and we were able to stop in the road and clear the windshield. *ph

Driving a 1998 chevrolet s-10 pick up truck. windshield wipers failed to come on during a heavy rainstorm while driving on interstate 80 in pennsylvania. wiper module was replaced. i believe this was the same problem which was the subject of a recall for full size chevrolet trucks. the s-10 pick up was not part of that recall.

Gm will be having a recall that applies to chevrolet s-10's through 1997. the recall relates to faulty wiper motor circuit boards that lead to intermittent operation of wiper blades. i own a 1998 chevrolet s-10 vin number 1gccs1947wk209624 and have experienced numerous failures of the wiper blades during rain storms. the most severe incident happened during heavy rains today, when i lost the use of my wipers for 10 minutes. i have described the problem to mechanics who informed me of the recall and indicated that it is most likely the same problem as that of the recall. the recall should be extended to model year 1998 as soon as possible. *nlm

Problem w/ wiper control on '98 s-10 w/ 48,000 miles. first observed 6 months ago when windshield washer fluid was no longer pumped to windshield. replaced pump in resevoir-- still had problem. about 1 month ago, wipers began operating erratically-- either running too fast, not at all, or refusing to shut off. suspect this may be a control board issue, but current recall only covers '97's and earlier

The consumers vehicle experienced the same problem as the recall on the windshield wiper module. recall# 1557585. the dealer would not repair the vehicle because the vin was not included. *nlm the consumer replaced the module himself which solved the problem. *scc
