Defect SummaryVehicle description: s -trucks equipped with 2 wheel drive. these vehicles may have had the right-hand antilock brake system (abs) module feed pipe and/or brake crossover pipe tube nuts tightened without seating the pipe-flared-ends enough to withstand normal assembly and vehicle inputs without partially unseating. this does not comply with requirements of fmvss no. 105, hydraulic service brake normal, emergency, and park braking performance.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurred, the seating seal could be broken during vehicle assembly, or from early road inputs or brake fluid cycling, and a leak could occur increasing the brake stopping distance.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the brake pipe union for signs of brake fluid, and if necessary, install a new brake pipe union.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes. some of these vehicles have an antilock brake system (abs) motor containing an out-of-specification spring clip. this clip could allow the motor bearing to become misaligned. if misalignment occurs, eventually the abs would be non-functional.
Consequence SummaryThe base brakes would remain fully functional, but the dynamic rear proportioning (drp) system, which optimizes front to rear brake balance, would become inoperative.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the brake pressure module valve assembly.

My 2000 chevrolet started to activate the abs when stopping, but only within the last 5 mph before stopping, i did some research and found that this was a known issue and there is currently a tsb, 020525006, open for the issue. is followed the tsb as i am mechanically inclined, test drove the truck and nearly ran into the wall on the back side of my garage. i pulled the fuse to the abs module and the truck stops without any issue. i also found a recall for all of the chevrolet full size trucks, model year 1999-2002. the description of the issue is the exact same as the issue i am dealing with. i also found out that the brake configuration is the same as the full size trucks. there are s10's with a different configuration, but mine is the same as the full size trucks. i am currently driving with the abs disconnected. to get the vehicle inspected, i am going to put it back in so that i can get the truck inspected as i do not have the time to get it fixed. the fix for this i believe is to have the hub replaced as that is where the corrosion exists. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet s10. the contact stated that both rear wheels on the four wheel abs independently lock and stick. speed was not a factor. the brake pedal extends to the floor when depressed and does not release. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. the dealer stated that the calipers and brake fluid level were fine. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 00v055000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the current mileage was 81,578 and failure mileage was 81,078.

Within the last couple of weeks whenever i am coming to a stop at slow speeds, less than 10 mph, my anti lock brakes do not allow the vehicle to stop. i have gone into a number of intersection and pass stop signs. this happens in reverse or drive. i have removed the abs fuse and have not had any problems. now my abs light stays on but the vehicle stops. the dealer said that the front hub bearing assy's are loose but the longtime repair shop i always go to can find nothing wrong with the bearing assy's. i think there is rust and corrosion on the brake sensor mounting surface and have a copy of a tsb to give to my garage to hopefully try and correct this potentially dangerous problem. *nm

 (1) driving on a dry, sunny, summer day. i was braking for a stop sign. (2) abs kicked in unexpectedly when vehicle slowed to somewhere below 10 mph. this had happened before, but this time it nearly prevented the vehicle from coming to a stop. almost caused me to enter a busy intersection with cross traffic approaching. (3) abs was disabled by removing the appropriate fuse. no further action taken. however i recently noticed the similarity between this incident and the symptoms described in nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 for full-size chevy trucks. *nm

I was parking my truck in my apt parking structure after work on 9/14/02, upon finding a parking space i made a 3 point turn to get into the parking space. i reversed then stopped and placed the truck in drive as i was about to pull forward into the parking space. at that point i barely touch the gas expecting to coast into the space and then suddely the motor just started revving up. i didn't think twice and just jumped on the brake with both feet but the truck wouldn't stop. we ended up jumping the cement parking stopper on the ground, which lifted the front end into the air about 2-3 feet, and sent us smashing into the block wall directly infront of us. i now have $2,200 worth of front end damage, and am really worried about driving that truck again.*ak

Both rear hydraulic brake lines ruptured at the flare fitting entering each caliper within 2 weeks of each other. the dealer was unable to replace the first one, right rear, because chevrolet informed them that the part did not exist! the dealer was forced to reflare the old line. within 1 week, it broke again in the same spot. i replaced the line with an aftermarket one myself. less than a week later, the other rear brake line (left rear) ruptured at the flare in the same spot as the right rear, entering the caliper. i replaced it myself and took the oem broken line to viva motors to inform them to inform chevrolet that there was a potential serious defect in chevrolet s-10 rear brake lines. the service manager advised me to call chevrolet myself since they (chevrolet) wouldn't listen to him. since chevrolet's southwest area zone representative had previously told me to go pound sand i figured why bother with him. i feel the odds of two oem brake lines failing within 2 weeks of each other are astronomical and since chevrolet chose to ignore the incidents, i'd better contact you to investigate further. hopefully, mine was an isolated case but i doubt it because as i said, the odds are astronomical and the sw area zone rep chose to say the part didn't exist rather than admit he had a serious life threatening problem. in reality, how can he say the truck never had brake lines? i smell a rat and would like your organization to check into it. if further investigation saves 1 life, this is well worth our efforts. fortunately, i was able to stop safely both times my hydraulic system suffered massive failures but i will say, i think the failures took a few years off my life and absolutely caused some soiled pants. i'm not a chronic complainer by any stretch of the imagination but i'm not stupid either and chevrolet has problem with at least one of its trucks and is choosing to hide its head in the sand it wants me to go pound. thanks for your efforts, john mullen. *ak

Failure is not permanent. abs causes brakes to shut off for about 1 second on one or more wheels, causing vehicle to either suddenly swerve to one side, possibly entering oncoming traffic, or extends stopping distance so vehicle rolls into intersection. initiated by sharp bumps , particularly potholes. not consistent, hard to reproduce if attempting to. several other owners have confirmed to me that they also have seen this. no accident yet, three near accidents, including swerve in to opposite traffic lane (no oncoming traffic just then). unpredictable and tricky problem, hits when you are not expecting it.

The rear brakes wore prematurely. it was later discovered the there was no lubrication on the caliper pins of the rear brakes. the pins froze and as a result, the calipers could not slide. this caused premature wear of the inside brake pads and rotor surfaces. *ak *cb *nlm the manufacturer failed to lubricate the pins. the pins were frozen into the caliper brackets and could not be loosened and required replacement. *scc *jb

When brakes were applied the car would shake; car taken to dealership to have the brakes checked; 2 rear rotors were warped and replaced; left the dealership and the same problem still existed. did not have time to take back as i was leaving on vacation. in traveling on the freeways and in the mountains the hotter the brakes got , the more the car would shake when the brakes were applied, and today the car continues to have this same problem. when i arrived at my destination, i contacted a cheverolet dealership nearby and spoke to the service person and they really didn't want to touch the brakes and suggested that it would be better to take the car to service where i bought it. today i'm taking the car to the dealership for the brakes to be checked again as the warranty is about to expire. i hope they take it for a good test drive!! i'm not sure is this problem is they hydraulic brake system. it could be the anti-lock brake system for all i know. but i've been driving 4-wheel drive blazer for about 20 years and this problem really stumps me.*ak

Brake line failed at an intersection, total loss of brake pressure. chevrolet notified, dealer could not find problem, part took a week to arrive, and we just fixed it at home out of exaspiration for the dealer, chevy was great though, line found worn right through. many failures with this vehicle. went through 3 batteries and 2 alternators. upper ball joint failed on the highway, parts department tried to say because it wasnt greased, but i keep it greased, the ball broke right out the side, all ball joints replaced. idler arm found broken when vehicle taken for re-alignment before that. various electrical failures (suspected short somewhere as battery sparks when reconnected). fuel pump failure at 65,000 miles, preceeding fuel guage malfunction about 6 mo's before, replaced fuel pump. heating failure suspected due to dex-cool coolant (coolant solidifies and jams heater core, ect...), vehicle reverse flushed, and new thermostat installed, not much improvement, blows harder but still cold. transmission slips on occasion. currently leaks steering fluid, this has not been corrected as i bought a new truck, and have not had time to fix the s10. water coming in from somewhere, carpet consistently soaked. very unhappy with vehicle with so many repairs, truck only has 70,000 miles, components failed far before their time, more minor things wrong but repaired. we are lucky to have a garage and a whole lot of tools for this vehicle. *ak
