General motors is conducting a special policy program for 903,464 owners of 2000 - 2003 model s/t vehicles through which owners may, at their option, either (1) periodically inspect the tailgate support cables installed in their vehicle and have the cables replaced if the cable coating exhibits any indications of damage or deterioration or (2) request that the tailgate support cables be replaced free of charge. gm will honor all requests by owners who opt for replacement without question regardless of the condition or appearance of the cables. gm has agreed to mail reminder notifications to owners every two years until the tailgate support cables have been replaced or until the vehicle is 12 years old.odi's investigation indicates that a significant majority of the reported complaints (87%) and injuries (94%) have occurred in my 2000 - 2003 s/t vehicles.

I have a 2001 chevrolet s-10 pick-up with 4-doors and 4wd. vehicle has been well taken care of with no damage. the metal door post frame where the door latch is attached is disintegrating due to what appears to be a very thin metal section. it appears that the door may soon come open during a right turn due to a failure of the dorr latch mechanism. this may cause substantial injury and vehicle damage.*ak

Tailgate cable broke in half on drivers side. 2001 chevy s-10 crew cab. no events leading up to failure. potential hazard if hauling a load of lumber with tailgate down or if a person were sitting on the tailgate as it snapped. potential injury could occur in either situation. recall already exsists for full size cheverolet pickups using the same cable. correcting the failure would involve the cable itself, as well as the latch on the tailgate that the cable is connected to. *ak

On my 2001 s10, one tailgate support cable broke when lowering the tailgate. i have seen a recall on these cables on the full size trucks, but not the s series trucks, yet the cables are the same construction and seem to have the same widespread breakage problem. gm refuses to warrant these cables or include them in the recall.*ak

See odi 755882. i own 2 2001 chev s10 ls 2 wheel drive extended cabs. both have the same or similar problems. a. the molding along the bottom of the windows on the doors is loose and comes off easily. one of the trucks has already the moldings replaced. the windows sometimes go out of alignment and tilt out. b. the rear end clunks/clanks when shifting into reverse. no solution has been found yet. c. the tailgate on both trucks will not latch completely on the driver's side. one truck has been looked at by the dealer. the dealer said the truck would need to be repaired in a body shop. the frame and body components of the box would need to be straightened in order for the tailgate to latch properly. the repair has not been done on either truck yet. d. the most disturbing problem is the strange behavior of the brakes. both trucks have experienced loss of braking ability. when applying the brake in a quick stop or emergency situation, the brake pedal is firm yet no braking power is felt and the truck surges forward without slowing. both trucks have had the rear brakes lock up (the abs failed to engage). one truck had all the pads and rotors replaced at 500 miles. this corrected the loud rumbling sounds and vibrations from the brakes but did not improve the abs. the other truck now with 22,000 miles shakes violently at speeds over 40 mph when the brakes are applied. it feels like the wheels are seriously unbalanced or the rotors are badly warped. however, the rotors were checked and found to be in spec and the wheels were balanced. still the problem continues and is intensifying daily. the shop which checked problem called gm and was told a pulse is normal in all vehicles with 4 wheel abs systems. i drive over 1000 miles a week. i think i know the difference between abs brakes engaging and wheels about to fly off. i have spoke with several other 2001 gm truck owners at the dealership who are all experiencing problems with their brakes.
