The truck was purchased new in 1999. it now has only 45,000 original miles. at the time of purchase the passenger's seat moved forward slightly when the brake was pressed. the dealership stated there was nothing wrong. the problem has progressively gotten worse and the driver's seat is now doing the exact same thing. apparently this is an inherent problem with this vehicle with numerous complaints. it is extremely dangerous. what can you do to assist?

I am the original owner and the vehicle has not been in an accident. i own a 1999 chevrolet silverado lt (new body style) model with 6-way power leather bucket seats. over the last 4-5 years, beginning with the driver's seat, slop in the seat movement has crept in to a point where now both driver and passenger seats exhibit an approximate 1 inch movement when either stopping or taking off. if this seat is moved completely forward or backward via the control knob, the movement is eliminated, but i cannot drive in either of these positions. tightening the bolts that secure the seat to the frame does not resolve the issue. the bolts were not loose. pulled the seats for further investigation and it appears to be bearing wear. this is the bearing that the worm gear mechanism rides through. with the seats removed and centered between fully forward and fully back, i can move the seat by hand and witness the slop. my driver's seat is never adjusted as it is adjusted for me only so i believe the take off and stop over the years must have placed enough pressure on the bearing(s) to wear them to a point that they no longer hold the seat in place. i confirmed my findings with a firestone technician who has been sending these seats out for bearing replacements for many of his customers. i am very concerned about a severe safety issue and that there will be a point where the mechanism will fail and my seat will move significantly forward or backwards when either taking off or stopping causing an accident. browsing the internet shows many individuals with the exact same issue warranting a safety recall from gm.

While approaching a stop sign, me driver seat slid forward as i slowed. the locking device, a small plastic device, had broken under the seat. this allowed the seat to slide forward and backward. i had to wedge a piece of wood plank between the seat and the firewall in order to get my vehicle home.

The drivers side power seat motor has play in it and allows the seat to move 1-2 inches back and forth as the truck brakes or accelerates. the passenger side seat is also jammed and no longer moves at all.

The seat latch on my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 broke allowing the seat to move freely. my 16 year old son was driving at the time and nearly had an accident because of it. the exact same condition occurred when the truck was nearly new (i am the original owner). the dealer fixed the seat adjuster the first time. this is a very dangerous defect. the replacement parts must be more robust. after reading all of the incidents of the same problems online, i cannot believe thaere has not been a recall. are you waiting for a fatality?

1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck drivers side power seat has about 1 back and forth movement while driving. tracks look tight. problem looks internal to the drive motor or gear. not safe while braking or accelerating.

Was not driving vehicle at time, simply getting something out of back seat, next morning, seat would not lock into place due to white plastic part in seat track of 1999 chevrolet silverado which prevents sliding back and forth has broken. i have already replaced this seat track once before, since the plastic part itself is not available for purchase. the first time it broke, i was braking and nearly had an accident. replacement was $250 from dealer, entire seat track has to be replaced.

I have 99 chevrolet silverado 1500 ls 2wd with 6-way power seats. both the passenger and driver seats move front and back during braking or acceleration. the movement is as much as 1 inch. the movement has increasingly become more since i first noticed the problem in 2006. i am very concerned that this problem poses a safety risk in a panic stop or collision situation. the seat(s) may break loose and slide full foward and/or backward resulting in loss of control or braking resulting in injury or death, and property damage. airbag safeguard would be rendered useless because the seat moves in a unpredictable way that was never analyzed by manufacturer's testing.

Sunday, october 11, 2009 i pulled the manual release lever to release the driver's side seat and load material into the extended cab of my pickup. a plastic piece with metal components inside the track (quoted from dealer as a seat adjuster) fell out of the right side track. my driver's side seat would not and continues not to lock into place, causing me to have to drive with one foot on the floorboard, and use the other to accelerate and brake continuously. when driven, the seat freely moves forward and backward with centrifugal force. note: the seatbelt is attached to the seat completely, not anchored to the sidewall and floor of the vehicle, so there is nothing to keep a driver from sliding all the way to the steering wheel if and when this piece fails. i immediately stopped driving the unsafe vehicle, and transported it to a local chevrolet dealership, fivestar, in aberdeen, wa. the dealership called today, october 13, 2009, with an estimated cost of just over $800.00. dealer said that both tracks need replacing, because neither one is locking. estimated cost $250.00 per track, plus the labor and taxes. i have ordered this work to be done. *tr

The latch mechanism for the drivers side seat adjustment failed, allowing the seat to slide front to back. the failure occurred when the seat was being moved forward to place items behind the seat. plastic pieces fell out onto the floor. it appeared to be a plastic piece that held the locking pin for the seat. the temperature that day had been between 20 and 30 degrees f. the vehicle had to be driven home. when you applied the brake, the seat moved forward. when you applied the gas, the seat moved all the way back. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while stopped at an intersection, the steering locked up, and the steering wheel could not be turned to the left. this was accompanied by the the sound of hydraulic resistance. the vehicle was not taken in for service. second, a piece of plastic fell off the interior of the vehicle. causing the driver seat to slide freely on the adjuster track when the contact sat in the seat. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer who was unable to determine the problem. third, the contact replaced the daytime running lights twice. the lights only worked for 3 to 6 months at a time before having to be replaced. the lights were not addressed by a dealer or a private repair shop. fourth, the headlamp switch constantly became excessively hot during operation of the headlamps. the vehicle was not taken in for inspection of the switch. fifth, when the 4-wheel drive mode was engaged, the wheels did not turn independently, causing increased effort in turning the vehicle. this problem was not inspected. sixth, the starter failed while attempting to start the vehicle. upon inspection of the starter, it was noticed that the housing was cracked. a private mechanic was consulted, who notified the contact that this was a common problem. finally, the passenger seat belt did not feed enough to allow for passenger comfort which caused the passenger to be abraised by the belt. the inertial control seemed to be intermittent. the seat belts were not inspected by either a private repair shop or a service dealer.
