Dear sir or madam, i have a 1999 chevy silverado. i just had the brake lines burst on my chevy pickup. having heard it reported on the local news and reading about it on line that. it is an issue that needs to be address, gm needs to step up and fix their low quality work. toyota had to fix their gas pedal issue, this is a far worse issue when you have no brakes and your car is full of people.

Thankfully after removing my box of my truck to repair rust, i noticed severe corrosion/rust on the brake line that feeds the rear calipers (enough corrosion where it was bowing out and slightly leaking). i went out and purchased corrosion proof flex line and replaced the entire line. upon further inspection the entire line is basically corroded away. i started looking at the other lines and they all have this same problem i really can't afford to replace them all nor do i have the time, reading online i'm not the only one. this should be investigated, this is putting many lives at risk! please investigate this. gm needs to be held for this problem. *tr

Brake failure due to brake lines rusting through. i had the brakes fail on my 1999 chevrolet silverado. luckily i was in the process of leaving my drive way and not on the road traveling at a high rate of speed. the brakes totally failed and after investigating the cause i determined that the brake lines were all completely rusted through. *tr

Both front and rear brake lines blew out due to rot. i was traveling ~50 mph in the fast lane of a highway when i applied brakes and they didn't even try to stop the vehicle. right to the floor. i was forced to put the truck into the concrete divider and use the parking brake. i sideswiped one car. as the police took my report all brake fluid leak out from multiple ruptures. *tr

I have 1999 chevy silverado 1500 truck. the brakes do not work at low speeds. two years ago i ran into the back of my own second vehicle, as it was parked in my driveway, when my truck would not stop at speeds lower than 10 mph. i took the truck into the chevy dealer and they fixed the problem for free because of a recall. it is 2 years later, and the truck is doing the same thing again. it will not stop at low speeds. i brought the truck back in and was told that the recall would not cover another inspection. i was also told that the wheel bearing sensor had been cleaned according to the recall and that is was possible corrosion had built up again. i told the dealer that it was unacceptable that every 2 years the breaks just stop working.*cn

Brakes failed to stop vehicle on several occasions traveling at a slow rate of speed and normally on a slight slope. occurs almost everytime the vehicle is moving slowly. consequences have been driven on the grass, redirected direction to miss other cars, no accident yet. to correct, a recall was issued on 8/29/05, had no issue then, having issue now and chevy will not fullfill the recall as they state the vehicle is 11 years old and has over 150,000 miles.

We have noticed that areas on the truck where rusting out. but when the brakes failed due to the lines being rusted through i was very upset. i do realize that you might have this from normal wear but the rusting is extensive.i want to file a complaint as i do hope that this will not cause an accident for someone else

My wife was traveling to bay city michigan to go shopping. she applied the brakes to slow down the vehicle as there was another car in front of hers, making a left hand turn. after a second or two of fairly hard braking, the pedal suddenly went to the floor. my wife was able to get to the shoulder to slow down before hitting the rear end of the car in front of hers. thankfully there was an adequate shoulder that she could pull off and slowly come to a stop.

On march 12 2012 i was traveling down a road going to work when a vehicle pulled out in front of me. driver did not see me therefore kept on going so i immediately hit the brakes and swerved to the left avoiding a crash.. at that time when i hit my brakes the pedal went straight to the floor. the abs was activated but it took considerably longer to stop the truck since i had very little braking effort... i took it to a shop to have it fixed and it was determined that one of the 4 lines that were clustered together on the frame between the master cylinder and the abs controller had burst. all 4 of the lines were very rusty. in addition, today march 16 2012 i went by the shop to see what they had done on the repair.. the mechanic informed me that he had repaired the line and when he was bleeding the brakes, another one of the lines had burst.

While driving on the highway, in a snowstorm, i had to hit the brakes to avoid another car, that had lost control. i was able to narrowly miss him, but when i went to stop, my brakes hit the floor. i was really lucky no one else was around, because i couldn't stop.

I had just finished replacing the rear brake calipers, rotors and pads. (i can't count how many brake jobs i have done in my career). i went out for a test drive. everything felt fine until i made a hard stop. all of a sudden the brake pedal went to the floor and i had virtually no brakes at all. i am a brake systems engineer with over 25 years experience, so i knew i had a serious problem. i put the truck back up on my lift and discovered that the solid brake line from the abs unit to the rear axle had ruptured and was leaking fluid. i investigated and found that it was severely corroded. all the other brake lines are also severely rusted and appear as if they could rupture at any moment. i dropped the fuel tank and replaced the ruptured line with a new one i fabricated. i do this type of work on nearly a daily basis so i am qualified to do so. it was very fortunate that this happened in a lightly traveled office park and not when i really needed the brakes or in traffic. it is my professional opinion, as an automotive chassis systems engineer with nearly 30 years experience in the brake industry, that these vehicles are unsafe to drive if they have spent any significant time in an environment of excessive moisture or where salt is used on the roads. these vehicles should be recalled immediately before someone gets severely injured or worse. i will no longer transport my family in this vehicle. if this had happened at a busy intersection the result would almost definitely had been a crash.

1999 chevy silverado 1500 2wd, i have no abs brakes have not had them for years the abs module went out the truck was barley 6 years old to expensive to fix,
03/09/2010118710
All this due to rusted out brake lines. on 3/9/10 i was approaching a stop sign in a 35mph zone. i put my foot on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor. i was able to give it a few pumps and i stopped in time. i immediately drove 4 blocks to auto shop. the mechanic found a ruptured brake line going to the back brakes due to rust. four days later i had to return my truck to the shop because my back brakes were sticking. i was informed that rust and corrosion had gotten into the back hoses and/or calipers and would not release properly. at that time he replaced the rear hoses and calipers. on 10/2/11 i had brake failure again. this time it was the front brakes. my mechanic informed me that it was a brake line coming off the abs unit in the front of the truck. there are five brake lines in that area and they were all rusted. he said he would have to replace all of them because they would eventually fail. at that time, the front brake calipers were so rusted that he could not bleed the brakes, and he suggested to replace the hoses and calipers and all five brake lines, which i did. he also told me there is a cross brace on the frame that was almost rusted thru and needed to be taken to a welder to be fixed.

Brake line blew out due to corrosion when pulling to a stop light, was able to stop the truck w/o incident. this was 8aug09. repaired on 12aug09. on 5aug11 went to replace shocks thinking they were shot, problem discovered, entire shock mount rail assembly had rusted away from the frame and is hanging in the air. mileage: 148876. on 30sep11 gas tank dropped to the ground due to corrosion of frame, and also exhaust system components have rotted away from the frame and now hanging, there are also some cracks in the frame, mileage 149476. there is no rust or damage to the body on this truck at all. it still looks like a new truck. the frame is rotting away from under the truck. i should have bought a ford. will never buy another chevy. from what i see, this is a known problem that gm know's all about and refuses to do anything about all these trucks. gm should recall and replace everyones frames on trucks like mine that have perfect bodies before someone gets killed.

Rusted brake line caused complete break failure while coming to stop at intersection. lost all break fluid while pumping breake trying to stop. used emergency break pedal to stop vehicle. line was replaced by local mechanic. happened several months earlier while coming to stop. different rusted break line sprang a leak. this leak appears to be located where brake lines are attached by a clamp located on top of chasis frame on drivers side of truck. truck is now undrivable so is out of service waiteing decision of who will pay for repairs.

Brake line burst while applying brakes. accident avoided only because there was no traffic in oncoming lane and i was able to swerve to avoid stopping vehicle in front of me. 1999 chevrolet silverado 137,000 miles. simple online research shows that this is a frequent problem with 1999 through 2003 chevy trucks. there is obviously a problem with the materials gm chose for these brake lines and a safety recall should be ordered before someone is killed in one of these incidents.

I was braking and the brake pedal went to the floor and i had about 10% of normal breaking power. i looked under the hood and my master cylinder was almost out of brake fluid. i looked under the truck and saw fluid leaking from a group of four brake lines running under the drive's side door along the side of a frame beam. it appeared as each of the four individual lines were running through a coiled wire. upon further investigation, i found one of the lines without a coil wire surrounding it and it was the leaking line.

 1. brake line tubing corrosion blew a hole in the brake tubing while braking to make a turn. 2. brake line fluid drained from master cylinder, truck can not be driven, it took some serious driving to get the truck slowed down to veer into an open parking lot before slamming into a car in front of me. 3.the truck had to be towed and is now sitting in the driveway without brakes. i have been reading about other chevy silverado owners having this same brake line corrosion failure.

We were in my driveway with a trailer and boat attached and proceeding down a hill when the brake pedal went to the floor. fortunately, we were going at a slow speed and able to stop, then back up. if we had been on the highway going 50 mph and needed to stop quickly, it could have been a much different story. upon looking under the hood, it was found that one of the metal break lines had ruptured and was leaking brake fluid where it was rusted through causing the brake pedal to go to the floor. it appears that all the brake lines have significant corrosion that could cause them to rupture during brake application. this is a safety issue as the brake pedal goes to the floor and you have little braking power.

I own a 1999 chevy silverado 1500 that has about 35,000 miles on it. vin# 2gcek19vox1244220. pulling a trailer with a boat and going down a hill, the brake pedal went to the floor. fortunatly, i was able to back up. i found that the brake line had rusted through. looking at all the brake lines, i find there is a tremendous amount of rust on all the lines. this is a safety problem. if i had been in other circumstances the failure would have led to serious consequences of human life.

On the evening of may 31st i was driving out a 2 lane road at approx 40 mph following another vehicle. the other vehicle did a panic brake and swerved to miss a deer in the road. i panic braked when he did and my pedal went all the way to the floor with no warning and i slowed down but didn't stop. when i found a safe place to stop i got out and checked my fluid which was down but not empty at this point. i had a wet spot behind the left rear tire on the frame rail. when the garage looked at it the brake line was very rusted and corroded and had ruptured. i had no warning light on either indicating a brake problem. in researching this issue on the internet it seems to be a common problem in these trucks. i had a new line run at the cost of $120.00. this is a very bad situation, there was no warning of a problem before or after the rupture, i could slow down but not stop, i had to shift to low gear to try to stop, the brake warning light or alarm never sounded. please do something and have gm help fix this before some innocent person(s) are hurt or killed.

The original equipment manufacturer brake lines rusted through and created a condition of substantial fluid loss and hence nearly complete brake failure on 1mar2011. there was no warning of the impending failure. as the principle driver was leaving the driveway the truck nearly didn't stop in time for an approaching highway-speed vehicle. upon parking the vehicle after the failure, brake fluid was discovered running out the hard steel brake lines on the drivers side of the truck. the location of the line failure was very close to where lines run along upper outside of frame nearing the abs unit. the truck owner, researched the causes, failures and remedies. the truck owner purchased all new steel brake lines for all lines, in addition all flexible brake lines and fittings in order to repair the failure.

As i approach a stop, at very low speeds, the abs unit kicks in with a sudden shutter and extends the stop time and distance. this started about 3 months ago and has not gotten better or worse. it is unnerving to have this happen when i need to stop at an intersection or approaching a traffic signal turning red. research on the internet indicates a nhtsa campaign id 05v37900 pe05020 was issued for this very same problem, including those vehicles in my state. i have been told, both by chevrolet and nhtsa, that my vehicle's vin number was not included in gm recall no. 05068, therefore not their nor your problem. i am upset that i have been rebuffed and want to know why my vehicle doesn't matter and the other ones do. i have had many problems with the truck's disc brakes over the years but this one concerns me very much since i don't know if or when they may fail in an emergency. thanks you for your attention. i am awaiting your response.

Brake line failure. happened to 1 line twice within a year, and the following year another line broke. all lines have been replaced. this is on a 1999 chevy pick-up. the lines were so bad in 10 years, had to be replaced. i beleive this is a safty issue, other vehicles ive had at least 20 yr, never happened. ive seen a 2003 chevy pickup that in a short period of time will also need replaced. i beleive the manufactors have bought cheap steel lines for these vehicles and this to me is a safty issue and i beleive this should be corrected as brakes are very important on any vehicles rolling down the highway. cannot understand why stainless steel or other line that is subject to the weather are not on these vehicles as the extra cost would not be that much per vehicle, in the long run it would be cheaper and safer to have thes installed on thes vehicles.

We have a 1999 chevrolet z71 pickup truck which we bought new on june 18, 1999. the truck never had a new car vehicle sticker on the window so we should have known there was something wrong right off the bat. so far we have replaced the brake components (rotors, calipers, etc.) four times. the front brake hose also rotted off o it. two weeks ago we had to replace one of the rear stee; brake lines because it had corroded through and was leaking brake fluid - would not stop at all. my wife had to drive it that way for over 40 miles on the interstate, intermittently putting on the emergency flashers. the entire undercarriage has been rusted and corroded from the day we bought it. the truck only has 41,000 miles on it. now when stopping at a slow speed like on an exit ramp stop sign, the truck starts to pulsate and the brakes feel like they won't stop. it is at the repair shop now. he cannot find anything wrong with the brakes or wheel sensors according to his computer. what can be done about this? is there someone we can go to or talk to? someone at chevrolet? another thing - the truck is garaged every other month and rarely sees bad weather. if it does - my husband takes it through the car wash for underbody cleaning.

Brake line (located under vehicle driver's side door) came apart at connector. causing complete loss of brakes. as i was almost stopped there was no damage caused. i had no prior warning to failure.

Defective brake lines - i was pulling into a gas station when a car leaving pulled right out in front of me, i applied the brakes to keep from hitting the car and the brake pedal went completely to the floor. luckily i was not going that fast and managed to swerve and coast to a stop. while investigating the condition of the brake lines for repair, i have discovered that all the brake lines are so corroded they will all have to be replaced. i would expect this from a vehicle that was 20 - 30 years old, but not from a 1999 model. i have a 1988 mustang with brake lines that look 10x better than the 1999 silverado that i just crawled out from under today...i can only imagine what this is going to cost me to replace.

06/07/201058491
There is an issue with the brake system on the 2001 chevrolet silverado pick-up that chevrolet has failed to address satisfactorily. the trucks were recalled due to an issue with the speed sensor that would cause the brakes to fail. in 2005 chevrolet recalled the trucks for this issue and supposedly put rust protestant on the speed sensor to protect it from failing. in 2010 i was nearly involved in a traffic crash when my brakes failed. the dealership advised that the speed sensor went bad. i contacted chevrolet and they failed to properly address this situation. in doing research i found that this is not an isolated incident and needs to be addressed before someone is killed or injured as a result of faulty brakes.

1999 cheverolet silverado 1500 4wd standard cab 4.3 v-6 -failure in brake line , i was stopped in line at drive thru and felt brake pedal go down and heard break fluid squirt from line, investigated problem and found a hole in line due to rust , location of probem was below drivers door where line runs along frame, will have to replace line, will keep old line for inspection if needed

I own a 1999 silverado extended cab 2wd ls pickup truck. i nearly rad through my parents garage when the brake line suddenly ruptured and leaked. upon further investigation all the lines are terribly corroded and risted to a point of being brittle( even lines under the hood where they are typically protected) i was happy that i was not on the highway when this occurred. i have since changed the main line to the rear of the truck with a better quality line and am waiting to do the balance but am uneasy and will probably have to just do them. this truck also had rusty transmission lines that caused transmission failure since i did not catch it in time when the line rotted out. what is going on when a company cant put quality materials in a system critical part? the rear plates that shield the parking brake completerusted and fell off.

I own a 1999 chevy silverado. i was going around a blind down hill turn, when i got around the turn there was a car completely on my side of the road. i slammed on the brakes, the truck slowed but did not stop, and the brake peddle went to the floor. after i was able to stop the truck, i found that the steel brake line running along the frame had ruptured. the location of the rupture was under the drivers side door. i took the truck to my local chevy dealer and had the line replaced.

My 1999 chevy silverado 1500 4wd (purchased new by me) has had mutiple corrosion/rust brake line failures that first began when the vehcle was only three years old. one event left me deperate as the failure occurred when backing my 8,000lb boat down a steep boat ramp into the water. the abs module also failed to operate when only two years old. all of this has led to extremely expensive repairs and modifications at my expense. my truck was not included in the previous rust belt states recall as i live in virginia.

Vehicle: 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck. i received a telephone call from my daughter. while driving the truck, she said that when she applied the brakes, the brake pedal went almost to the floor before the truck slowed, and a warning light lit on the dash board. i went to where the truck was parked. i checked the brake fluid reservoir. it was low, so i added brake fluid. i than tried the brakes, by pumping the pedal a couple of times. i got out and looked under the truck, and found a puddle of brake fluid. looking carefully, i could see that it wasn't leaking from any fitting, so it had to be a broken brake line. there was a monro shop near by, so i brought the truck there. after looking the brake lines over, they found that one ruptured due to corrosion, and the remaining lines were badly corroded. i had all of the brake lines replaced at a cost of just over $1,000. i have owned vehicles in connecticut since 1975. this is the first one that ever had it's metal brake lines corrode so badly that one ruptured and all had to be replaced. i also wish to point out that the parking brake doesn't operate correctly. it's a sad statement that there was a recall for this problem that was limited to manual transmission vehicles. i guess that it's assumed by nhtsa that automatic transmission vehicles don't need parking brakes?

Complaint involves a 1999 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 abs activates at low speeds (typical <5 mph). experienced multiple near-misses of low speed crashes when braking; one involving a pedestrian. failure occurs on average 1 out of 2 times when braking. brought vehicle to gm dealer - balise chevrolet/oldsmobile, w. springfield, ma - on 7/16/09. vehicle mileage was 122,846. this is the same dealer from which vehicle was purchased original in 1999. dealer diagnosed problem as probable corrosion at both front speed sensors. recommended cleaning and possible replacement of both sensors at cost of $234.25. i informed dealer that this was the same problem that occurred prior to recall 05068 (nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000) where both front wheel speed sensors were inspected and replaced at 73,428 miles on 10/13/05. dealer checked vehicle records and confirmed. dealer was asked to repair at no charge based on recurring problem but declined. contacted gm customer assistance on 7/20/09 and spoke with representative (service report 71-742297566) who reiterated that gm would not repair at no charge based on prior replacement of parts under last recall. she gave me the name of the gm manager at chevrolet to whom written complaints should be sent. *tr

For the past two weeks i've noticed that when i apply pressure to the brakes the truck does not stop immediately. it rolls a little and it scares me because i am pressing the brake into the floor of the truck with both feet. this is happening every time i drive and with this being the only transportation i have, i have to continue to drive it. i am currently calling around for quotes and notice that there may be a recall on this problem but it is currently being researched because of relations to the problem being salt crystals. either way this not normal wear and tear. its a problem for certain chevy models and year. i've been informed that it may be the master cylinder or the booster. either way i need to get it fixed but if there is going to be a recall, it needs to happen soon. i have been quoted an estimated price of at least $300. *tr

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. i have had to replace the brake lines due to a rupture as i was coming upon a 4 way intersection. thank god nothing was coming as i rolled through it. i made it home and to the shop the next day and had to replace all the brake lines. i have had to replace the parking brake pads on the rear which is a recalled item on a truck that has a manual shift transmission. what does the transmission have to do with brakes? shouldn't matter, just because there hasn't been an incident of a roll away with an automatic transmission. so why do they inspect the parking brake if you have an automatic transmission? because it is an emergency brake! with this truck you need it. you can find many complaints of the brake lines rusting out in the same year and make as my truck. there is an apparent problem with quality at gm and they should be held accountable. *tr

Abs failed, motor kept running until the fuse was pulled, went to dealer, i was told repairs would cost $800-1100 for repair. i was told there was a recall in the ice belt states, but not in the south.. the abs failed and caused an accident, i was traveling 35 mph with a 1000 pound trailer in tow, a vehicle suddenly stopped in front of me and i hit him, minor damage $2500. my point is the south has a humidity problem that causes electrical components to fail, we have salt air in mobile, alabama. this recall should be for all not just the ice belt c/k 1500 pickups. *tr

Brake line failure!! wife came to pick me up at work seen fluid dripping from underneath truck -brake fluid got home and found the line was rotted by the back drivers side wheel replaced damaged section blown out the 2nd time by abs motor replaced bad section again blown out 3rd time inspected entire brake line found corrosion everywhere i looked. contacted my dealer and was told quite rudely that there was nothing in chevrolets recalls about brake lines. have also replaced the back rotors (twice). my abs motor also started acting up pulled fuse. how many reports do you nhtsa have to get before you make this company fix their bad design? i'm sure if someone in your family was hurt in one of these vehicles or hit by one that a mandatory recall would happen in a snap. or does chevrolet have you in their backpocket................ *tr

Abs module went out on 1999 silverado that has 51000 miles. symptoms are that the module/pump continues running even with ignition turned off. in addition, abs dash light is on. dealer states that repair will be roughly $1000. internet chat room for like vehicle has literally 100's of people with exact same problem. only way to stop module/pump from running, aside from spending $1000, is to pull 60 amp fuse that enables the abs brakes. *tr

The incident happened while driving my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. i was applying the brakes to come to a stop and once my speed went below 5 miles per hour the abs kicked in. this prevented me from stopping my vehicle immediately. i had to swerve to the side of the road to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. there was no damage to anyone or property. this began happening on a regular basis after this event. i had to remove the main fuse for the abs system to prevent it from recurring. i am waiting to have my vehicle looked at by a mechanic. my vehicle was included in a recall for a wheel speed sensor within the past two years. *tr

For several months i had noticed that the abs would occasionally engage at low speeds on dry pavement, resulting in increased pedal travel and increased stopping distances. then on december 15, as i left the house and had driven about 100 yards, i heard a grinding sound coming from the abs unit next to the transfer case, and the noise stopped when i pulled the abs fuse. i called o'brien chevrolet, and the earliest they could look at it was december 20. they looked at it, and told me that the abs unit had developed an internal short, and would have to be replaced, costing about $1200.00. i was shocked! this truck is in like-new condition, with only 37,200 miles, and its always been kept in a garage or a carport. i can't believe that 37,200 miles is a normal service life of a general motors abs unit before they develop shorts and have to be replaced. *jb

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. last week i went to the chevy dealership and had them fix the wheel speed sensor under the recall for the abs activation. i told them that i pulled the fuse for the abs motor a while back and i didn't have a replacement. to my surprise, he said that fixing the wheel speed sensor would not fix the abs problem i was having. he said this without any details as to why i pulled the fuse. he said that the problem was the abs motor. he said that the circuit packs within the motor are shorted and the motor would have to be replaced. it seemed like he has seen this problem many times before. even seemed annoyed when i asked further about it. i got the feeling that he has to answer questions about this all the time. everyone i know with this same vehicle is having the same problem. the mechanic i use to go to told me that he sees this problem all the time on chevy's and gms from around 1999. he owns a 2000 gm sierra and is having the same problem. gm put out a recall for the abs, but are not fixing the problem completely. chevy dealership told me it would cost about $800.00 to replace the motor. i feel like gm took the cheap way out by fixing the wheel speed censor. is everyone else with this problem being fooled thinking that their abs problem is going to be fixed with this recall that is currently out? why is gm concerned about one safety issue (the cheap one) and not another (the expensive one)? *nm
