2003 chevrolet silverado k1500. consumer states problem with electronic dash *tgw the speedometer has been inconsistently working since july 2010. the gauge would be fine at first, when suddenly it would register speeds that were not correct and the needle was slow to respond to any change in speed and it would not drop to zero when the consumer came to a complete stop. it would usually correct itself overnight, but not always and it would remain normal until the next intermittent episode. also, there was an intermittent clicking noise coming from the dash. the consumer also stated the doors would lock and unlock on their own while stopped and while driving. the headlights went out briefly, all of the dash displays and side door light panels worked intermittently. the power heated seats would jerk and make noises. *jb

2003 chevrolet silverado speedometer is showing i'm traveling at 70 mph when actually doing about 10 mph, and at other times shows i'm traveling 30 mph when actually going significantly faster. this is causing a safety issue, and it appears that this is a systemic issue with chevrolet. *tr

My 2003 silverado speedometer is no longer working properly. this seems to be a common problem with these vehicles. it will sit idle at 20 mph while sitting still and say that i'm going 90 when i'm going 70 mph( or so i think. just guessing ). the web sites and dealerships are saying that gm will only fix it if your car is under 7 yrs old and under 70,00 miles. this seems to be a problem with many gm cars and is a danger to drivers(we do not know the actual speed we are going!). *tr

Speedometer on 2003 chevy silverado began to malfunction and then stopped working. current mileage is 97,000 which is over the mileage for the current warranty repair. common and dangerous problem in gm vehicles and should be recalled and fixed without mileage limitations. owner also not sent notification of problem nor was it on the carfax report when vehicle purchased. *tr

My instrument panel quit reading actually speed. it only does it every once in while. it always reads slower then what the actual speed is. after the truck is shut off awhile it reads right after the truck is restarted. the price is around 500 to replace. my truck i bought used with 100000 miles on it. it got 114000 now so i will have to replace it unless a total recall is done on it to replace all instrument clusters for all with more then 70000 miles on it. *tr

During october of 2008, i received a letter from general motors informing me that my 2003 chevrolet silverado was among a group of vehicles affected by potential instrument gauge problems, and that i should only bring my vehicle to a dealer for evaluation if i was actually experiencing problems with the instrument cluster. the letter went on to state that the vehicle warranty on this issue was being extended to 70,000 miles or 7 years, whichever came first. well, at the time i received the notice, my truck had approximately 110,000 miles on it, so i was basically out of luck as far as gm was concerned. at that time, my vehicle was not exhibiting any of the symptoms described in the letter. however, shortly after christmas, 2008, my instrument cluster did begin to malfunction. beginning with the tachometer not reading at all, the symptoms progressed to sporadic tachometer readings, and then the speedometer began to be affected. right now, the speedometer can intermittently read anything from zero (when i am actually doing more than 50 mph) to 110 (when i am actually doing about 60 mph). when the symptoms began to occur, i called my local gm dealer to see about repairs, and i was told my vehicle was outside of the repair window for the courtesy repair, and when i asked how much it would cost to repair it on my own, i was told about $500. since the problem is (so far) very intermittent and unpredictable, and since i don't happen to have a spare $500 to spend on a serious safety problem which gm has apparently known about for some time and refuses to address beyond a very limited scope, i elected to wait and see. but in the meantime, i have no accurate speedometer reading, and must attempt to gauge my speed by that of the other vehicles surrounding me at any given time. this is hardly an acceptable situation. i have owned many vehicles over my lifetime (i am 60 years old), and i have never had any with instrument cluster failures. shame, shame, gm. *tr

I received tickets for driving over the speed limit. i found out later it was because the instrument cluster in my model truck was defective and registering the speed 10-15 mph over actual. i consider this defective part a safety hazard to myself and to the general public and reported it to gm. then i found out that gm had a recall of the this same part or instrument cluster in my model of truck. i never received notice of the recall nor was i ever informed at the time of service at a gm dealer that there was a recall. after finding out that there was a recall of this part, i went to the gm dealer for a replacement but was then informed that my vehicle had passed the mileage limit on the recalled part and that they (gm) would no longer honor the defective part. my problem with gm is that if this defective part is a safety hazzard then gm is responsible to repair it. i was informed by an attorney, a law enforcement officer and a judge that gm is required to supply a speed ometer that registers the correct speed within +-5 mph. this defective part is off by 10-15 mph. i have been informed that gm has refused to repair at no charge thousands of similar trucks with the same defective part. this puts not only the driver of these vehicles at risk but also the public at large. a 10-15 mph error in speed could be disasterous in a school or construction zone. *tr

The speedometer on my 2003 chevrolet silverado freezes up, and does not indicate the true speed of the vehicle. i received a letter of recall/repair from gm addressing this problem, but the letter states that they will only repair the problem if the vehicle is less than 7 years old or has less than 70,000 miles. here is where i have a huge problem with this. when i got the letter from gm, my truck had 66,000 miles on it. at this time, the speedometer was working fine. the letter states in bold lettering do not take your vehicle to the dealer unless it is showing signs of failure. my truck did not develop this issue until it reached 77,000 miles. gm now refuses to replace the defective speedometer under the recall, but wants $600.00 to replace the speedometer. there is no way to determine the true speed of the truck, and to me is a huge safety issue for my family. *tr

I had one incident about 6 months to a year ago when the speedometer in my vehicle failed to read properly. i later received a letter from chevrolet stating there was a defect involving the speedometer. however, the mileage on my vehicle (about 100k at that time) was over the 70k maximum for the company to repair it. i have since had it happen several more times, off and on, during 2008. the speedometer sticks, example: at 30 mph, then you have to subtract 30 mph from whatever it registers to get your actual speed. i contacted the 1-800 number for chevrolet. they offered me a $200 voucher for other maintenance at the dealer, but refused to replace the speedometer. i have not had it looked at because i will be charged a diagnostic fee on something that they are not willing to replace. it is obvious that the defect is in the part, and is not due to any neglect on my part. i did tell the 1-800 clerk to send the voucher after she told me that there was no other recourse. she stated that the voucher was for me being a loyal customer. *tr

The speedo slowly quit working. asked several service agents and dealers and they were unaware of the way to correct the problem other than by restarting the vehicle over and over until it forced the speedo back into zero placement, but now that does not work and the speedo does not work at all. all other gauges work fine. *tr

I purchased a 2003 chevrolet silverado pickup in december 2006. in the beginning of 2007, many of my instrument panel gauges begin to stick. some days they would work, some days they wouldn't. shortly after this, i received a courtesy letter from gm describing the problems happening to my vehicle and advising owners of a special coverage that would extend the warranty for certain customers. my vehicle, having over the number of miles allowed, does not qualify for this coverage. since that time, all the gauges on my instrument panel have gone out. i strongly disagree with gm's claim that this is not a safety issue. not having a speedometer, or any other gauges on the vehicle is extremely unsafe! i have a five year old vehicle, and i unequivocally believe this issue should be elevated from one of a courtesy extension to a recall. this defect has nothing to do with the mileage on my truck, and i should not be penalized for the number of miles on it! i contacted gm customer service, but i was advised that my vehicle was over the allowable mileage for this special coverage and i could not be assisted. this situation is truly an accident waiting to happen. *tr

Approx. 2 years ago the instrument panel went out in our chevy silverado tk. at that time there was about 50k mi. on the truck. we could not afford to have the panel fixed. we have been driving the truck as is. we have had many chevy tks. about one mo. ago we received a letter in the mail about chevy products having the same problems as ours. but the stipulations are in our eyes un acceptable. you can have no more than 70k mi. on the vehicle in order for chevy to fix this defect. if they knew of the defect how can there be this kind of stipulation... for those of us in ca, the miles traveled are many more than other states. also the defect in the vehicle does not discriminate. when it happens it happens! the letters were sent out to vehicles that are 2003's. it has already been 5 yrs. we believe there should be a recall on this part. *tr

The entire gauge cluster goes blank, no readings. this affects the speedometer as well as engine monitoring gauges. i feel that this is very much a safety issue. besides the loss of speed information, without the ability to monitor the engine there is no way to know if failure is immanent. engine failure on the highway could easily lead to loss of control of the vehicle. *tr

Speedometer wither freezes or registers greater or lesser than i am driving reported this to the dealer ship where they gave me the advise to shut the vehicle off and it would reset itself. this worked several times, sometimes taking several restarts to accomplish. now i get the recall notice and because ai have driven my vehicle over 70k/5years, which ever comes first they will not repair this. it will cost approx. $450 to fix it. if this is a recall why are they not taking care of it. it takes several years and many complaints to get something recalled. that means that this has been going on for several years. this is bull, it is a design defect and should be replaced at their cost. gm refuses as does my local dealership. my my vehicle has been maintained by them, i must have spent thousands over the last 5 years in bringing it to them for required servicing. why did they never check this ? their comment was, well, if you never bought it in to be fixed why should it be fixed now i didn't bring it in because the service manager said he had the same problem with his vehicle and that shutting it off would reset it. oh, they would fix it if it were considered a safety problem. well, if i am traveling at an unsafe speed because i am going according to my speedometer, then that is a safety problem. only in this case, they get to determine what is a safety problem and what is not.. *tr

After only 40,000 miles speedometer is erratic at best, if it works at all. sometimes reads 120 mph while stopped or 0 mph while on the highway. i have read literally hundreds of complaints on various websites of other victims with this very dangerous problem. i was quoted $450-$600 to repair speedometer. also, there is no option to purchase replacement parts to fix myself. gm obviously knows about this problem yet continues to ignore it. i can only assume gm is waiting for the death toll to reach an adequate number before they will respond with a recall or satisfactory fix. how many deaths will it take? what's the magic number? i would like to think zero! *cn

The displayed speedometer speed is less then actual. initially the displayed speed was only off by 10 to 15 miles resulting in driving in excess of the posted speed limit and approaching vehicles in front of me too quickly before i realized that the displayed speed was incorrect. the problem has advanced and now the speedometer usually displays a speed of 10 miles or less no matter what the actual speed is. dealership has been notified and has quoted a repair price in excess of $400. dealership also indicated that this is a known issue and that there is a technical bulletin about this issue. part has not been replaced yet.*cn

The speedometer has started acting erratic. it will not show the correct speed, often sticks on a particular speed when i know i'm either going slower or faster. at times it shows i'm going in excess of 120 mph. it sometimes goes back to 0 when it is shutdown. it may, or may function correctly the next time it is started. since this is all i have to rely on to determine if i'm traveling the correct speed, is the manufacturer responsible if i exceed the speed limit while i am relying on this for an indication of my speed? *tr

At around 124,000 miles while driving on the highway, i noticed my speedometer said i was going 55 mph. i gave it some more gas and the speedometer never rose, only fell down to 0. after my trip where this initially happened my speedometer has done this nearly every trip where the speed reaches 70 mph. today, 11/13/07, i received a notice from gm that they were aware of the problem. however, being that my truck has more than 70,000 miles they are unable to fix it at their expense. calls to gm have been no help and the problem will not be covered by them, even though they know it is happening to alot of these model vehicles. *tr

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado lt z-71 and the speedometer will get stuck in the middle while at stop and while driving about 55 will be pegged out. i took it to the dealer and he told me it was a very common problem and should be on recall. i found an online forum with several hundred disgruntled gm owners having the same problem, most of them say the repairs cost around $700 and the problem sometimes reoccurs. i am a diehard gm fanatic and have owned several and everytime i had a problem it was minor, but this is not a minor problem. in the forum i found there is talk of a class action law suit and i would hate to see this problem go that far, when a recall would take care of the problem. i have seen recalls on alot more minor stuff from gm, so what is the hold up? i cant afford to spend $700 to fix faulty workmanship. the tachometer also doesn't function right, but that doesn't bother me as much as the speedometer. i have also learned that fuel guages may not function properly either and that worries me because my wife uses this truck and has my children with her most of the time and we live in the middle of nowhere and if she runs out of gas she may not have cell service to call someone and the thought of my wife, five year old daughter, and infant son walking down the highway late at night doesn't sit well with me. please do the responsible thing and recall your faulty equipment. *ak

(had to pull the fuse) i have researched this on the internet and have found that numerous complaints have been issued about both of these problems. something should be done about this. i have documented all of this and kept copies of all complaints and emails. just to have something to fall back on when my wipers go out and i get into an accident. something must be done. i can assure you that my next truck won't be made in america i contacted dealer and they assured me they could repair it for under 1000.00 wow, what a bargain considering it should be a recall. thanks for letting me vent. *nm

I currently own a 2003 chevy silverado and my speedometer and tachometer currently do not work. i contacted the dealer and they mentioned that it is common but the entire instrument panel needs to be replaced. ($500) i asked what caused the problem and was told that a plastic gear wears out. after searching the internet there is a lot of people complaining about this problem. *jb

While driving over 55 mph the speedometer sticks and jumps up and down. finally stops working and needle points down. no way of judging speed. had it reprogrammed at cost of 10.00, didn't fix problem. had a gage cluster order and installed at cost of 300.00. this is clearly a defect in cluster in a lot of trucks and should be repaired at no cost to owner. my truck had 30,650 miles on it when this happened. *nm

Speedometer stopped working at 53000 miles. apparently, all internal parts. many other people with the same situation. this type of part should not fail until 300,000 + miles or 25 years! most people are quoted (and paid) $500 - $1,000 to repair the problem. i've got a call in to gm dealer, but haven't heard back yet. *jb

I own a 2003 chevy silverado and the speedometer has been very erratic lately. i have approximately 75,000 miles on my truck. i can be traveling at 65 mph and the speedometer will read 30 mph or even 0 mph. there is really no consistency to how the speedometer measures my speed. *jb

The speedometer on my 2003 chevrolet silverado malfunctions from time to time. after having been driven for and hour or so it will register the speed at which it would remain at the most, for instance if i had been traveling at 70 mph and came to a dead stop it would still register 70 mph. also when it does not stick it will act like it is trying to stick and drop five or so miles at a time instead of decreasing at a steady pace. when this failure occurs there is no way for me to determine my speed. *nm

Speedometer is reading 20 or 40 or 120 or 70 no matter if you are sitting still, going 50. it does not matter the speedometer is all over the place. *nm

Speedometer is no longer accurate. i have read many posts for people with the similar type of vehicle 2003 chevrolet silverado and 2003 gmc yukons with the exact same problem. the speedometer locks up and displays speeds at least 20-30 mph over, then sometimes registers 0 mph when traveling highway speeds. i have to resort to using a portable gps for my speed detection. this apparently is a widespread problem with gm vehicles, it is a costly fix, and gm refuses to issue a recall. as this is a very dangerous situation to be in, please look at requiring gm to issue a recall. thank you. *nm

Speedometer on 2003 silverado failed while driving to work. glanced down at the instrument panel and noticed that i was traveling 120 mph in a school zone!!!!....obviously an error. the speedo needle is gittery and the instrument panel flickers. i'm gravely concerned that i no longer know how fast/slow i'm driving. this is a safety issue and must be addressed/resolved. *nm

2003 chevrolet z-71 ext. cab, 4.8 liter, auto trans. ls model. just turned 50,000 miles on 11-13-2006 and speedometer is erratic and inaccurate! unacceptable and unsafe. i have read over 200 of the same cases with the same type of vehicle. speedometer reads 100 when traveling at 60 mph. when in park speedometer reads over 35 mph. this safety issue needs to be recalled! *nm

2003 chevrolet silverado speedometer sticks at speeds over 40 mph. when the vehicle slows down, the speedometer develops an offset zero. i realized the problem had occurred slowing to a stop light. the most dire consequence was slowing to turn after realizing the problem had occurred and having no reliable gauge as to my turning speed. i never realized how much i refer to my speedometer while slowing until i almost missed my turn entirely because of this failure. i have since had the digital instrument panel cluster repaired at a cost of $200, by a non-gm technician. *jb

Speedometer gauge is not reading the correct speed and jumps all over the place. this can cause me to have a accident because i am unable to tell what speed i am traveling. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph on dirt road and asphalt, the front end of the vehicle shook and pulled to the left. this was accompanied by a clunking sound from under the front end. during this incident, the instrument panel displayed incorrect information on every gauge. the transmission would not shift properly, either. the vehicle became locked in second gear, and was unable to be shifted out. finally, the brakes on the vehicle were spongy, causing an extended stopping distance from any speed. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer where it awaits a diagnosis.
