I was driving around 45mph and when coming to a stop the brake pedal went to the floor. i did not have total loss of brakes, however, if this was an emergency braking condition, i would not have been able to stop safely. the front right brake line rusted and fluid came out. this is an obvious engineering failure. brake lines should not be made out of material that can rust.

2003 chevy silverado, purchased new with 92k miles on the clock now. while starting out from my driveway, i stopped for oncoming traffic and the brake pedal went to the floor with no pressure resistance. i returned to the garage and saw brake fluid dripping from the left front. a quick examination showed that a steel brake line burst obviously due to massive rust. this is a serious, unexpected and a critical design failure. this truck has never seen snow/salt and the steel brake lines along the underbody are like-new (even though this would be the area that corrosion would be expected!). i am no longer young and have driven many vehicles with over a hundred thousand miles on most of them. i have never had a steel brake line burst. to see hundreds of similar complaints just on this database is clear evidence of a safety issue that has --- to date --- been ignored. if not a recall, at least provide notice to owners that there exists a potentially fatal flaw in the materials used in the brake systems of these vehicles. since i'm still on the original front brake pads, i think it's safe to say i am a gentle driver and have not abused the brakes. thanks.

Vehicle resides in salt belt state but rarely driven in the winter months; mainly to leave for a 2-month trip south. thanks to god that my wife, others and i escaped serious injury. just prior to this incident, vehicle was at dealer for regular service/check. previous brake work at 47k miles in 02/2010 pads on one wheel completely gone and pads on other were worn to 1/16? thick. front pads at 85% at that time. technician blamed ?road salt?. filed a complaint with gm but only got a reminder that vehicle was no longer under warranty. current incident occurred 01/11/13 approx. 11 mi from nashville, tn. while on the freeway, traffic ahead began slowing down fast. i began applying the brakes and when i pushed down harder to stop as traffic stopped, i heard a sound like a low thump and the brake pedal went straight to the floor. i managed to whip the truck around the back of the car in front of me onto the shoulder and avoid collision, and finally came to a stop. i was able to determine that i had some braking power remaining, and we slowly continued in to nashville. located a dealer who inspected the brakes and said front brakes were completely gone/brake line was shot. it was friday afternoon, so in addition to the $2100 in repairs, we incurred meal and lodging expenses for 3 days/nights (approx. $600), before the repair could be completed on monday. again was told that brake deterioration was due to road salt. i disagree with this first, vehicle is rarely driven in the winter and second, i've never had a similar problem with any other vehicle in all the years i've lived in salt belt states. i believe there is an inherent design deficiency with the brakes in this vehicle. i have the parts if needed for inspection. i can be reached by phone at # listed in complaint thru 03/15/13. after that at permanent home address (listed). *tr

This is a 2003 chevrolet silverado, regular cab, 5.3l v-8. it has about 164500 highway miles. the vehicle has been well cared for. the brake lines rotted out, and almost caused me to hit other vehicles...without warning. gm will not offer any help, although this is a huge problem based on research and just hearing others tell of the exact same problem. they should recall all of the vehicles that have this problem; and reimburse those who have suffered financial hardship repairing an obvious flaw that is a huge safety hazard. *tr

Application of brakes upon slow down of getting off of exit ramp was soft and farther then normal. 3 or 4 applications for turns seemed ok. final application to turn into property had brake fail appear and brake go to floor and vehicle not slow quickly enough and truck running into my fence scrapping the side of my truck down fence. upon inspection found reservoir empty and fluid leaking from ruptured rusted line on left side of vehicle at drivers door. inspection found many areas of the lines badly rusted. *tr

While applying the brakes in an attempt to stop at a red light, the truck started to slowdown in a normal fashion. just before coming to a complete stop, the brake pedal proceeded to the floorboard. at that moment, and not before, a warning light came on and a system message was displayed saying to service the brake system. the vehicle rolled to a stop without further incident. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop to repair a hole found in a rusted brake line. *tr

I was driving 45 mph coming up to a stop light i applied the brakes and they felt fine then all the sudden the pedal went to the floor and i didn't have any brakes what's so ever. i tried applying the brakes again and they went to there floor again and was not stopping. i was able to get the vehicle stopped by down shifting the truck and applied the emergency brake. once i was able to see what the problem was there was a hole in the brake line on the drivers side back brakes where the main line coming from the abs go to the connections on the back brake. the hole was two inches above the connection. the brake line rusted out and a hole started. after looking at the brake lines they all appear to be rusting. this could of caused a bad accident or even someone's life. this is a major problem and chevy will not do anything about it. *tr

My brake pedal went to the floor as i was backing my truck up to hook up my boat. when i got out of my truck there was a puddle of brake fluid under the truck on the drivers side. when i inspected where the leak was comming from it was from severly rusted brake line that burst. the other brake lines are rusted as well. i have no brakes what so ever. i would not have been able to stop if this had happend while driving especialy towing my boat.

I have had 2 brake lines on my 2003 chevy silverado 1500 (66k miles) corrode and leak causing brake failure over the last 3 months. fortunately this happened when i was traveling slowly, so no accident occurred after the 2nd failure i took it to a mechanic to review the entire brake line system and all the lines coming from the abs unit to the front of the truck are terribly rusted and corroded. they are bunched so tightly together running along the frame of the truck that moisture can't escape and causes corrosion. this is a poor design, and the brake lines should have been stainless steel for this design to have been used. so far i have spent $300 dollars on the two lines that did fail, and i am now forced to replace all the lines at a cost of over $1000 dollars. please investigate and recall this due to poor design/choice of materials.
05/16/2011172000
One of the brake lines from the master cyclander to the equalizer rusted through and i had no brakes. the next month another line going from the equalizer to the left rear rusted through, then in august a line going to the front of the truck rusted through.luckily in all 3 cases i was able to safely control the truck to have repairs made. why for the sake of a few dollars aren't the brake lines made of stainless or a better grade of material.

The brake lines on this vehicle have rusted through causing the brake fluid to drain out and make the brakes inoperative. the brake lines are constructed of steel tubing, they should have been stainless steel to avoid rusting. the manufacturer claims normal wear and tear. i totally disagree. these lines should have lasted much longer. i have owned many cars which have been many years older and have had more than twice the number of miles on them. i have never heard of such a thing before.

Brake line rust-through causing long stopping distances and requiring rapid pedal pumping. loss of fluid required refills to allow the vehicle to be driven to a shop. no collision occurred. cab-back replacement of steel lines took place at a cost of $475.
12/14/2010102100
I was braking to get off an exit ramp, and the brake pedal went to the floor, brake warning light came on, and warning bell was ringing. i was able to stop vehicle without hitting anything because i stayed on the main road. if i had turned down the exit ramp, i would have rear-ended stopped traffic ahead of me. the cause was a broken brake line - brake fluid was dripping from vehicle under the driver's door. took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that all of the brake lines on the truck had to be replaced due to corrosion. total cost estimate was $1800.00

Chevrolet silverado 1500 2003 76,000 miles. brakes failed while pulling a 6000lb trailer on an interstate. rusty brake lines burst when brakes were applied while entering a construction zone. had no brakes. if car in front hadn't seen me coming and pulled over, this may have been a fatality report.
11/03/201036000
Applied brakes and the brake pedal almost went to the floor,i was able to safely pull to the curb with the assistance of the emergency brake.upon inspection of the problem i found that all the steel brake lines under the vehicle were rusted. one brake line had burst due to the corrosion. there should be no reason that these brake lines should rust and fail ever, nevermind at 36000 miles. this could have been alot worse, someone could have been killed.

When attempting to slow my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 to enter an off ramp, the brake pedal went to the floor and the brakes no longer worked. i barely missed hitting someone and was able to use the parking brake to slow and stop the truck. luckily, i was going up an incline and had room to pull off the main road. i had to tow the truck to my mechanic. upon initial inspection, it was deemed that the brake lines corroded to the point that they blew out. it was also determined that all of the brake lines were corroded. including the tow, the cost of repairs was over $1100. the truck barely had over 20,000 miles at the time. i live in maryland and have owned other vehicles for much longer and with a lot more miles. this type of failure could have certainly resulted in a major accident with multiple injuries or even deaths. i hope this complaint aids in the federal investigation i read about here: http://www.insideline.com/chevrolet/silverado-2500hd/feds-investigating-6-2-million-gm-vehicles-for-possible-brake-problem.html thank you.

I have a 2003 chevy silverado 4x4 ext. cab 4.8l eng. while driving the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and brake fluid was leaking underneath the front of the vehicle. the brake lines were rusted and corroded on the outside. i will be replacing them. i have only 70,000 miles on it. i have owned numerous vehicles and this is the first time i have experienced rusted brake lines. about 5 months ago i had the same problem but on a different brake line on the rear, thank heaven for secoondary backup lines.

Driving down the highway and slowed for an upcoming red light and lost brakes. fortunately the light turned green and nobody was in front of me. my braked line corroded by my driver front tire. contacted chevrolet and had another mechanic company replace the line.
09/21/2010111000
The rear backing plates on my 2003 silverado completely rotted away and exposed the brakes and disc rotors and calipers to extreme dirt and winter salt. this caused one brake caliper to freeze and both disc rotors to get very badly pitted. i had to replace all the components for both rear brakes at a very expensive cost. i have never experienced something like this in all the years of owning a motor vehicle.
06/12/201089000
Abs brake system engages at slow speeds on dry surfaces causing extended stopping distance. this problem and the fix is the same as described in the nhtsa defect recall of 05v379000. my chevrolet silverado is a 2003 so outside the recall and dealer refuses to take responsibility also have replaced the rear rotors with with worst rust i have ever seen on rotor. nearly falling apart

We had complete loss of hydraulic brake system. luckily my wife was in a parking lot when the brake line let go. hydraulic fluid was running out from under the truck. the petal easily went right to the floor, no resistance at all. the dealer asked if we could drive the truck about 10 miles to the shop. we had it flat bedded in. all brake lines were very rusty and all had to be replaced. we do not have old brake lines.

03 chev. silverado 57000 miles, purchased new by myself.brought to dealer due to brake wear indicator noise @ 32000 miles. had to have all four rotors and eight pads replaced due to extreme rust . too bad to turn down . i was told that was not unusual for that truck .$900.00 repair. at 52,000 miles abs sensors started malfunctioning at low speeds , again rust causing sensors to lift from hub and misread indicator, $600.00 repair. 57,000 miles rust again strikes , all brake lines on vehicle are rusted so badly they are flaking away material and produced a major brake line leak where the lines cross the frame above the fuel filter. can't wait to get the bill on this as all the fittings are badly rusted as well. amazing that there is no carryover in parts from 02 to 03 yet the same problems exist repeatedly. gm employee and buyer since 1965, no more for me. quality materials throughout i'm sure.

Recently i went to start up my 2003 chevrolet silverado and the brake pedal went straight to the floor. thinking it was air in the break line i pumped the brakes several times and the brake pedal continued to go straight to the floor. i realized that after inspecting the vehicle break fluid was leaking near the front left wheel. ultimately, i had to have my truck towed to the dealership where the problem was diagnosed as brake line rust/corrosion, and another brake line was also on the verge of failure. i ended up having two brake lines replaced which added up to about $1200, but fortunately i'm a loyal customer at that dealership, so the price was reduced to about $850. currently i only have 44,000 mi on my truck. *tr

I am writing in regards to my anti lock baking system (abs) and my steering column. i was nearly involved in an auto accident on dry pavement when my abs system engaged and then dis-engaged at a speed of less than 10 mph. when steering to the right to avoid the accident, my steering column had a strange vibration/loud humming noise. my antilock brakes engaged while i was slowing to swerve to miss the oncoming vehicle and then my abs stopped working and my abs warning light along with my parking brake (p) warning light came on. now, since that day (2 days ago), my steering column still makes noises when i turn to the right and my abs system continues to engage at slow speeds when stopping even on dry pavement. i have been told by a gm dealership that the two issues that i am experiencing are not on a recall list but are common problems with my vehicle. they further advised that since my vehicle is no longer under warranty, i would have to pay for these malfunctions. i was told by an independent mechanic that the above issues are safety issues and gm is aware of the problems. with the above being said, i feel that my issues with the abs system and the steering column are safety issues and gm should be addressing these issues before someone is seriously injured or killed. i need to get these issues corrected on my vehicle, however, i do not feel that i should be liable for these repairs when gm is aware of the issues and nothing has been done to remedy the problem. *tr

My 2003 chevrolet silverado truck started making a loud grinding noise from the rear wheel. the vehicle only has 28,000 miles on it and has only been used for transportation of passengers and light hauling on occasion. i pulled the rear wheels and noticed the brake rotors and calibers excessively rusted to the point that the shoes where not contacting the rotor. the local gm dealer told me it was not under warranty( len stoler chevrolet in westminster md.) i replaced the rear pads and had the rotors turned down and also replaced both rear calibers with new ones and still the noise is there. also the brake pedal is very soft and almost goes completely to the floor even after numerous beedings of the calibers . there is no air coming out of the bleeders. the anti lock brakes apparently don't work because the wheels lock up and slide when you press hard on the brake pedal. this truck has been a nightmare when it comes to these brake problems. the brakes still don't function properly and nobody can tell me how it can be fixed properly since it clearly is a engineering design fault by general motors corporation many people have to get hurt or even killed with these faulty brakes before gm is held accountable for their faulty product? this vehicle was taken to lenstoler chevrolet under warranty for the brake pedal going to the floor on 10jun2005, where they replaced both rear rotors because they where rust pitted and out of round with just 20,136 miles on the vehicle. *nm

2003 chevy silverado anti-lock brakes repeated cause failure to stop, especially on slippery surfaces. the algorithm does not work. while driving / coasting at 25 mph, a car made a sudden lane change in front of me. i applied the brakes on a snow covered road and the anti-lock brakes activated, causing me to roll much more rapidly toward the back of the car. i swerved into a parking lot opening, but the rear driver side scraped a small roadside tree. the anti-lock brakes also activate when i apply the brakes while driving over rough roads. i have frequently rolled into intersections when this occurs. it's the worst on slippery roads. i conducted several tests by driving a fixed speed and attempting to stop in as short a distance as possible on a snow covered slippery road. if i apply brakes up to the point where the wheels want to lock, but i don't press hard enough to activate the anti-lock pulsation, i can stop in the shortest distance. if the anti-lock brakes pulse, i roll much further. if i let off the brakes a little during the pulsation, the truck still stops in a shorter distance. this flaw is not as noticeable on dry pavement. when i notified the dealer, they told me that's the way they are, and there was no recall, etc. i hope someone issues a recall before serious injury or death occurs. there's a good chance i will disable the anti-lock functionality, at least during winter driving. the anti-lock brakes on other similar vehicles suffer the same conditions from my investigation. the truck would be safer without this malfunctioning system. *tr
