SERVICE BRAKES

First incident: upon leaving work, i merged onto the highway, travelled around the circle, stopped, crossed onto another highway, stopped again, accelerated normally, reached approximately 40 mph and had to hit the brakes hard to stop because of traffic in front of me stopping short. the next time i depressed the brake pedal, it travelled nearly to the floor. the line from the abs unit to the rear brakes had cracked. i was able to get the vehicle to my garage where i removed(and saved) and replaced the line. second incident: tuesday, february 19th. on my way to work, normal driving and braking, approaching a traffic light, light changed to yellow, i was going approximately 50 mph, depressed brake pedal, pedal continued to travel and i was able to stop in the middle of the intersection after the light had turned red. no accident or injury. i will most likely receive a ticket as the light has a camera that photographs anyone running the light and sends them a ticket in the mail. this time, a line going to the passenger side front caliper broke. i was able to get the vehicle back to my garage where i cut out and began the difficult task of replacing this line. i also noticed the line going to the driver side front caliper was equally rusted, but had not broken yet. it is now thursday, february 21st. i have missed 3 days of work and now i will have to have my truck towed to the dealership i work at where i will most likely have to remove the body of the truck from the frame to properly install new brake lines to the front calipers. i have saved the old brake lines as evidence. they look more like rotten twigs than they look like steel brake lines. it's disgraceful that a vehicle only 9 years old would need all new brake lines when i have had several old vehicles from the 70's and 80's which had original brake lines that did not break. only surface rust appeared on them.

I had parked my truck at a christmas tree farm. upon returning to my truck, i restarted it, shifted into reverse to back up in the field when it appeared to have slid in the mud while applying the brakes. i continued up the hill and had rounded the top of the farm continuing back down a moderate slope when the brakes were applied but provided very little stopping power. the brake light in the dash illuminated and a note in the dash indicated to have the brake system serviced. the truck was taken to a gmc dealer for repairs. i was told by the dealer that all of my brake lines were rusted out and repairs would cost between $1200.00 and $1300.00. i will contact the dealer tomorrow to save all of the old brake lines for inspection. *tr

While exiting interstate 89 in swanton vermont, i applied the brakes and the pedal went completely to the floor with nearly no braking occurring. there were no warning lights or previous problems. vehicle was towed to a repair facility. an inspection revealed the brake line burst very close to the master cylinder. the inspection also revealed the entire brake-lines were rusted and corroded beyond any normal wear. the repairman stated that he has seen this on a number of silverado's and that their is obvious problems with the quality of the lines. this vehicle is garage kept and shows no body wear or engine wear.

Put foot on brake pedal to start vehicle and the pedal went to the floor. the brake system warning light illuminated. pumped pedal and there was little increase in pressure. turned off vehicle and starting visual inspection of the brake components. fluid chamber was full and clean. abs module was clean and all wires in place. the brake line above the left rear frame rail had a severe hole and fluid running out. lines and fittings in other areas are also corroded but no leaks readily identified. *tr

Brake line failure - braking ability loss. while stopped at a red light i noticed that the brake pedal was slowly fading and moving toward the floor. i assumed that the brake system was failing in some way and drove very carefully. i stopped and inspected the vehicle and saw that fluid was leaking from a brake line under the master cylinder area, i still had use of the rear brakes, apparently only the front side had leaked. i never lost control of the vehicle fortunately, as i became aware of the problem while stopped. if the failure had occurred while driving at highway speed things could have been very different. my local mechanic replaced the two brake lines that run from the equalizer to the abs unit at a cost of nearly $300.00. all the lines were badly corroded but i can't afford to replace them proactively right now. having read many other similar complaints i believe that gm should do something about this before more damage, serious injury or even death occurs. *tr

2004 chevy silverado. consumer writes in regards to brake failure in vehicle. *smd upon leaving a service station and applying the brakes, the pedal went to the floor. due to being close to home, the consumer drove very slowly and parked at a lot close to home. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic. the mechanic called and said the brake line was very rusty. he replaced a section of the line; approximately $400. the mechanic inspected the lines and all four of them were rusty. it would cost $900 to replace all of the brake lines.

 1. rattling, clunking in steering column - recalled on the 2005 silverado 2. abs sensors corroded causing false activations, potentially will cause low speed crash(es) - also recalled on 1999-2002 silverado both items occur numerous times in any short trip. taking vehicle to chevy dealership in town, want ridiculous amount of money to correct, why? when there are recalls of similar problems of different year trucks. *tr

Brake line failed as i was backing out of my driveway . found the cause to be severe rusting of the underbody i find this condition unacceptable for a 30.000 dollar truck with this many miles. i am thankful there were no injurys or property damage.

Brake lines rusted and ruptured at a bend going to left front wheel. this truck was bought new by me in south florida and never driven on the beach or in salty conditions. why are you only looking at 1999 through 2003 when they clearly did not improve the brake lines for 2004? the underside of my truck has bad corrosion.

Driving on i-95 in florida exit 289 as i was exiting i applied brakes pedal went to floor used e-brake to slow vehicle down which took some distance lucky for me exit ramp very long, i noticed no traffic on rt.1 so i went through stop sign. there was no warninglighton dash or any other warning. i finally stopped got out and found a major leak behind left front tire along side frame i noticed 4 brake line stacked 2x2 against frame rail.they were totally rusted and rubbing frame truck now at dealer. i have owned many chevy trucks with more milage and age never had this happen or brake lines rustout so bad.

During slow speeds, under 10 miles per hour, stopping (approaching stop signs, traffic lights, other vehicle traffic, etc.) the abs kicks on without warning making braking very difficult. the vehicle has no abs warning light on. much more pressure must be applied to the brake pedal in order to overcome the abs and come to a complete stop. makes driving the truck much more dangerous and has a large potential for a vehicle accident. my opinion is that this issue should be a vehicle recall item. i live in the snow belt where much sand and salt is spread on the roads.
10/14/201148500
Was about to pull out onto the highway when the brake pedal went to the floor. with truck in park, checked underneath and noticed puddles of brake fluid on the ground. turned truck around and parked it using the parking brake to slow/stop. after parking the truck, the instrument cluster said to service brakes soon. further investigation revealed the hydraulic brake lines along the frame rail are prematurely deteriorated. all need replacing.

Driving condition warranted a quick stop. applied brakes but pedal went to the floor without any stopping ability. i applied emergency brake to stop as i drifted into intersection, then put automatic transmission into park engine was still running and i noticed that if i depressed brake pedal i could engage transmission drive, but as i attempted to move the vehicle it coasted since i was on an incline .then i contacted aaa and they arranged a tow to local repair shop. there it was determined that my brake line failed due to corrosion. all truck brakes were just replaced and state inspected 12/18/10 at the dealer from where i bought truck.

I was driving my 2004 chevy silverado pickup to work when upon slowing down to enter a driveway the brake system ruptured and i lost all braking. luckily i was going 5mph or i would have hit something or someone. later that evening i went on-line to research chevy truck complaints and i found the brake failure i experienced is epidemic with 2000-2006 models from all parts of the country, and that gm is doing nothing about it-blaming it on salt etc.. if that were the case ,all vehicles would be suffering these issues ,not so. the concensus is that the brake lines are made of inferior materials and placed on the frame in such a way as to accumulate dirt, salt and moisture and hold it creating the perfect spot for corrosion to occur.almost all of the ruptures occur in the same spot-under the drivers seat area, behind the left front wheel., as mine did. my concern is that someday an unsuspecting owner will put his /her brakes on,say, to avoid a child or at a busy intersection, and have the same failure , resulting in injury or death. my concern is that gm and its dealers are aware of this and have not warned truck owners about the dangers. my dealer just serviced my truck and gave it a safety check, but did not seem to notice the brake lines were rusting out to the point of failure. i wonder how many trucks with prematurely rotting brake lines they have repaired over the years (and not have noticed a pattern), only to remain silent? pleas help me do something--before people get hurt or killed.

2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 4 wheel drive. abs system activates when coming to a normal stop at about 5 miles per hour. this causes the brake pedal to push back your foot back and the brakes to release slighty. it happens intermittently and you never know when to expect it. no accidents yet, but i can see where this could cause many. there are also numerous complaints on the internet where other drivers of like gm owners are experiencing similar problems.

I experienced a catastrophic brake failure in my 2004 silverado while approaching a traffic light. fortunately, traffic was light and i was able to downshift, use the ebrake to come to a halt and gather my wits. there was no warning until the brake pedal went completely to the floor then the warning light and audio indicator came on. i nursed the truck home driving slowly and using the ebrake. upon arriving at home and performing an inspection of the brake system i discovered a severely rusted/corroded through brake pipe directly below the proportional manifold leading to the abs unit. absolutely no redundancy here, total failure. upon further inspection of the brake system, i discovered an unacceptable amount of rust/corrosion on brake pipes. the corrosion also appears on other lines as well as the whole underside of the truck. i am appalled that gm does not have a recall on this very serious defect that is life threatening but does have recalls on parts that are not life threatening such as lights or tail gate cables. i have never had a failure such as this in this new of a vehicle in my 50 plus years of driving, even in michigan. something needs to be done to rectify this serious defect. i plan on replacing the entire brake pipe and lines with a stainless steel system. i am sure most other gm owners are unaware of this defect as i was and having this type of incident definitely is not the way to find out about it.

Faulty abs braking with 2004 chevy silverado since time of purchase, low speed braking results in pulsing and unsafe stopping distance on dry pavement. i have 40,000 miles on this 2004 truck and have had 2 full brake jobs (rotors and pads, and had the rotors turned once) i mostly use the truck for communting without much braking (highway miles). i have never had the abs light come on, yet the brakes are dangerous. the dealership i purchased from simply said gm went with rear drum breaks the next year to make it better, with no service bulletin or recall created. do i have any solution or recourse for this costly and dangerous braking system?

2004 chevrolet silverado abs breaks pulse at low speed when stopping on non slippery surfaces, greatly increasing stopping distance and control characteristics of the vehicle. this sudden change in breaking performance and vehicle to pulling to the left, almost resulted in a collision. this condition is known to nhtsa as id# 10004310 or tsb# 030525007 i strongly believe that this safety defect should be corrected by recall. as i understand it earlier models have a safety recall for this condition which is caused by metal corrosion. *tr

Brake failure 2004 chevy silverado 1500. loud grinding noise in the right rear area of my pickup led me to stop at the nearest repair location to diagnose problem. inspection indicated brake pad on inner right rear wheel was worn down to metal and was grooving into the rotor. advised to drive as little as possible and bring truck the next day for repairs. the next day i took it back and had to have a rotor replaced and all four rear brake pads, even though the other three pads still had 75% of the pads left on them. technicians who worked on my vehicle recognized common problem seen in many 1500 chevy silverado's of this age/era. technical bulletin from chevrolet (00-05-23-005b, dated may 27,2003) states problem with this model truck including year models 1999-2004. solution to problem was to install mud flaps in front of rear tires to prevent road debris from being thrown up onto caliper assemblies and causing excessive wear to the right rear inner brake pad. we purchased this truck in december of 2003, well after this bulletin was published and they sold it to us with no mud flaps installed and no mention of the need for mudflaps or that there was a known design flaw in the vehicle that could cause rear brake damage. chevrolet should have installed mud flaps on all affected truck models sold after they were aware of this flaw. they did not, nor did they later issue a recall to address this issue. mud flaps they recommend are not longer being manufactured by them. i have attempted to resolve this issue with chevrolet and they have refused any responsibility or assistance in obtaining the mud flaps (part # 15765007) or reimbursing us for the brake work that would not have had to have been done, if not for this known design flaw in our truck. i believe that there are thousands of truck owners out there that have had this same problem and perhaps did not have access to the bulletin, and are unaware of chevrolets knowledge of the design flaw and the mud flap solution. *tr

When braking, if the vehicle is on a very rough road that makes the truck bounce sharply several times in a brief period, the abs system activates. this increases the stopping distance on a dry road. on a certain country asphalt road i have driven there is a short rough are immediately preceding a stop sign at an intersection. as an experienced driver i know when to commence braking. however, the first time i drove my abs-equipped silverado at the location mentioned, the stopping time was increased unexpectedly due to the abs activation and my truck went part-way into the intersection. future stops were made safely after i became aware of the strange abs behavior and began braking at that intersection earlier than normal and crawled over the rough pavement section at a snail's pace. danger exists when driving in an unfamiliar location and coming upon a very rough spot. these rough spots are not always readily visible especially on an asphalt covered roadway. the bumps do not have to be large, just enough to jostle the truck vertically, causing the abs to engage. i notified the dealer but they mentioned a lack of opportunity to replicate the conditions that caused the problem along with expressing doubt about the problem actually occurring. an internal groan emerged as i heard the 4-wheeler driving rookies spew their blather as this long-haul trucking professional driver who drives in one year what they do in ten was doubted. typical. i admit, the problem is difficult to replicate unless a location can be found with the proper pavement conditions. the spot where i first noticed the problem is in california, i am now back home in nebraska and have not found a place hereabouts where the abs activation occurs due to a rough roadway. *jb

Dt: the contact stated, the break pedal was positioned almost to the floor, making stopping difficult. also, there was a loud popping sound, (ba-bang) from the area of the fuel tank, within a few minutes of turning off the ignition. both issues have been addressed with the dealer and no solution was found for the breaks and changing the brand of fuel was suggested for the popping sound. both issues continue unresolved.

10/28/08 i woke @ 6 a.m. to let the dogs out. and i heard this loud noise coming from the garage. come to find out it was the abs control module, just running away. no keys in the truck. just running. so i unplugged it and plugged it back in. it stopped the noise but i don't trust it now. *tr

Although i have not had an accident, the brakes on my 2004 silverado k1500 are dangerous. the pedal is very soft and when pulling a 4000# travel trailer i have serious problems stopping safely. i have had to take the shoulder on one occasion to avoid hitting another vehicle. even when empty, it takes an excessive distance to safely stop. my dealer has told me the brakes are within gm specifications, but has also told me what i can do to improve them. at my cost of course. *jb

2004 chevy silverado, brakes began making a grinding sound and it became more difficult to stop. checked pads and rotors, rotors are rusted and badly pitted causing an unusual wear pattern on pads. vehicle only has 44,000 miles. this is indicative of faulty design or faulty materials. my previous gm vehicles did not have a problem like this. *tr

I have two apparent defects on my 2004 chevrolet silverado. the truck was purchased in december 2003 and has 15.000 miles on it. i have noticed rusting brake rotors and poor ability to stop the truck. i noticed rust on the brake rotors inside and out. i have approached my dealer with the scenario but since the truck is out of warranty by time (3 years) there is nothing other than a discount that he would offer to fix. i have read quite a bit on this issue and it appears to be a pervasive safety problem. i even have a co worker who has the exact same scenario...same year and same problem. i have decided to repair myself but i believe this is a design defect. *ak

Rear disc braking system on 2004 chevy silverado with 41k miles suffers from excessive corrosion on rotor edges, causing reduced brake pad contact, and leading to poor stopping ability overall. replacement of these rotors and pads is the only action that can be taken to correct the problem. *jb

The vehicle would not stop in a reasonable distance and i had to go to the right of vehicle in front. no accident resulted. now i must begin stopping well ahead of time because the rear brakes never seem to stop well. gm has worked on the brakes at least three times, including replacing the rear calipers and pads all in the first 30000 miles. *jb

The brake lines failed on my 2004 chevy silverado. i crashed. the body shop stated the brake lines had rusted through. i only have 34674 miles on the truck, and i am the only owner and driver. i have checked numerous website (consumer affairs.com) and have found a lot of data concerning chevy brake lines rusting. chevy dealership advised they should not have rusted but will not fix them. nhtsa should get involved and look into chevy brake lines rusting before a fatality occurs!!!!!! i believe this is a serious issue and should be looked into and a recall of gm/chevy trucks should be issued by your agency. under component name there is not a description for brake lines so i put down other or unknown. *tr
