We had a flat on our 2004 silverado truck and we were unable to detach the spare tire to replace the flat tire on the truck. it is way too complicated to remove the spare tire and fortunately for us it happened while we were at work in the middle of a snow storm so we were able to pull it into our heated garage to attempt the repair. we let it warm up overnight and attempted to remove the spare tire the next day. even in a 70 degree heated garage in dry conditions we could not remove the spare tire. i think this is an extreme safety issue if this happened in the middle of a busy interstate or in the middle of the rural countryside in winter or rainy weather if someone attempted to remove the spare tire. the parts rust from exposure and the mechanism to release the tire fails to work. from talking to two tire dealers each said that they had to cut the wires holding the tire in place with a blow torch to even remove the spare tire. i also believe there is a false sense of security that you have a spare tire on this vehicle if there is a flat tire. this has been an issue for years each tire dealer said and chevrolet has never addressed this issue. i just imagine a 16-18 year old young man who is stranded on the side of the road struggling to fix this issue being seriously injured fighting to remove the spare tire. this is 2012 and they can't find a better way to secure a spare tire on a pick up?

The speedometer on my silverado does not show the proper mph figure. it varies from 0 mph to 40 mph no matter at what speed i am traveling. this is especially dangerous when traveling the mass pike as i have no idea how fast i am going. around city driving it usually stays at zero with an occasional spurt to 60. i cannot find a recall from chevrolet regarding this type of problem but there should be. this is a manufacturing problem.

2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 4 wheel drive. abs system activates when coming to a normal stop at about 5 miles per hour. this causes the brake pedal to push back your foot back and the brakes to release slighty. it happens intermittently and you never know when to expect it. no accidents yet, but i can see where this could cause many. there are also numerous complaints on the internet where other drivers of like gm owners are experiencing similar problems.

The spare tire underneath the 2004 chevy silverado will not release from the cable mechanism when lowered. i was able to get the tire to lower approximately two to three inches but the secondary locking mechanism would not release the tire from the mechanism holding it. searching many websites under the keywords 2004 chevy silverado spare tire will not release from mount showed that this is an enormously huge and widespread problem for most models containg an under the vehicle spare tire mounting mechanism. i was fortunate that i was in the city when my tire went flat because i was able to call a wrecker quickly. but, for the times i am traveling on the highway this has made me come to the realization that this is an enormous safety issue. why hasn't this design flaw been addressed by gm? it is now apparant to me this has been going on for quite some time. i firmly believe this is a safety issue and should be addressed by gm as a design flaw? in addition, it really should be an item that needs to be addressed by a nationwide recall. i understand that my vehicle is seven years old, but from reading the widespread complaints about this design flaw (not being able to release the spare tire), i felt it was important to report about the widespread failures in the mounting mechanism for under the truck bed spare tires.

I was exiting a highway traveling 35-40 miles per hour. the road had a slight turn to the right with a small puddle of water in the middle of the turn. when i hit the puddle my truck began to fishtail. i first thought i was hydroplaining but when i tried to do corrective steerring nothing was working. the swevering got more and more violent and move the truck through 3 lanes of possible on comming traffic. when i reached the berm on the other side of the road there was a loud bang and my truck canto a sudden stop. i thought that i hit the guardrail and when i looked in my rear view mirror i saw may spare tire whith was mounted uder the bed of my truck laying on the ground behind me. i exited my truck and saw i never hit the guardrail and the loud bang was when the tire brook free and bent out my rear fender. it soon became evident that the spare tire hanger came loose from from part of the bracket that was holding it inplace and was swinging back and forth until the part of the hanger that was bolted on finnaly brke and released the tire. while swinging back and forth it damaged one of the shocks, bent my tailpipe and knocked it of its hanger and did some damage to the underside of the truck i was very lucky becaus the light for the on comming traffic was red and all potential harm and property damage was avoided.

I have a 2004 chevy silverado and the speedometer gets stuck on a different number every time i get in it. it never goes back to zero and i never know how fast i am going. i contacted a friend that works for a gm dealership and he said they had a recall on all 2003 and 2004 for this problem. so i took it up there and the man i talked to said the recall was only good for trucks under 70,000 miles. my truck has 128000 miles. but it seems to me if they knew it was a bad part and how important this part was it shouldn't have a mileage limit for a recall. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 25-30 mph, the rear passenger side tire blew out. when the contact retrieved the spare tire, it was rusted to the cable hoist and could not be removed. she was informed by a mechanic that the cables must be cut to remove the rusted spare tire. the manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer from where it was purchased and have them diagnose the failure. the contact filed complaint number 71-620509185 with general motors. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage was 25,371 and failure mileage was 25,351. updated 05/05/08. *lj the intermediate shaft was replaced, due to a noise being heard in the front of the vehicle. updated 05/05/08. *jb
