Experienced braking failure and activation of anti-lock brakes when braking at low speeds. this causes longer braking times and distances and i have narrowly avoided hitting cars in front of me, running stop signs, etc. on numerous occasions. after researching this phenomenon, it is known as unintended low speed abs activation - a common problem for older model gm trucks. additional research has revealed that it is a common problem for 2006 silverados, yet it has yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. it is commonly the result of an increased air gap between the wheel speed sensor and hub reluctor ring due to rust and debris build up on the sensor mounting surface. this is a serious hazard that needs to be addressed for silverado trucks from rust-belt states. *tr

I was following my girlfriend in my truck & when coming to a slow stop at less than 5mph, my trucks abs started to activate on dry road conditions causing me to bump into her car! no real damage occurred to either of our vehicles but after researching this known gm problem with their abs systems and their wheel sensors, it's obvious that gm knows of these issues for years in their trucks!! i've taken my truck into the dealership where i bought it brand new in 2006 and they told me that it was my problem to get it fixed!! i replaced the drivers side wheel bearing after it failed in 2010 with a gm wheel bearing and their service tech told me that gm would replace it for free but yet they hold no responsibility for the original gm wheel bearings!! this is a disaster waiting to happen to all gm truck owners! *tr

At low speeds when coming to a stop, the abs will activate for no reason. apart from being an annoyance, this also causes a longer stopping distance which poses a hazard if there is another vehicle in front of you. the right sensor was replaced in 3/2011 and the left sensor was replaced in 11/2012. it seems odd that both would fail and judging by the number of complaints for the same issue listed on here and multiple other websites, i think it's time for gm to step up and admit a continued problem with this. there was a recall for this issue up to 2002, i think it's time it is extended. *tr

My brake pedal went all the way to the floor when attempting to stop the vehicle. i had the truck towed to my mechanic who indicated that all four brake lines were severely corroded, leaking brake fluid, and had to be replaced. this repair cost me $948.96. my mechanic also told me that other portions of the truck's undercarriage were severely corroded and the fuel lines were also in jeopardy of failing in the near future due to corrosion. previously, i had to replace the front brake rotors and pads at 19,027 miles and again at 26,058 miles due to untimely corrosion. i do not live near saltwater or any other body of water and do not use the vehicle for work. it is not exposed to corrosive materials. *tr

I was driving to my house over a bridge, with a load of wood and lost control of my vehicle due to no brakes. i quickly put the truck in lower gear and press on the emergency brake skidding to the side of the road. i was nervous as i was traveling on a road and onto a bridge. later i found brake fluid all over the front of my engine compartment and noticed the front brake line on the drivers side was rotted/rusted. i was shocked to see this on a 2006 truck , only 6 years old. most of the lines on the rail in the plastic clips were rusted. this could have caused a major incident if i was traveling at a high rate of speed. *tr

At slower speeds, when braking my abs activates on dry, clean pavement, almost 80% of the time. this causes my truck not to be able to stop properly and i'm afraid this is going to cause an accident. from reading over the internet i have read thousands of complaints by numerous chevrolet vehicle owners of the same complaint. my truck has 34,000 miles and i do not believe that wheel bearings should have to be replaced due to an issue chevrolet has had on the majority of it's vehicles for almost 10 years.

2006 silverado 1500. unintended low speed abs activation. the abs activates when coming to a stop increasing stopping distance by 15-20 feet making a rear end collision inevitble. when gm was notified, they stated that there was a recall for the problem i described, but my vehicle did not fall within the model year, when asked if gm was going to expand the recal, i was told no. everybody is jumping on toyota prius for thier brake issue, yet gm goes unscathed with thiers. the abs activates below 10 mph on dry/ clean pavement and is increasing in frequency.

Abs sensor(s) operate when slowing to a stop regardless of road conditions. this initially happened only occasionally but now is nearly constant and repair is needed. gm dealer initially had no clue of what was happening but also found play in right front hub, internet search shows many drivers with same problems in sensors and hubs but no recall from gm. why?

While approaching a one lane bridge on dry, clean pavement at approx 10 mph i attempted to brake to line up with the bridge. the vehicle failed to brake, with the abs light coming on and stayed on and a loud noise came from the the passenger side front wheel well. i closely missed hitting the rail of the bridge (which would have been a 20ft plunge off the bridge) and the vehicle continued for another 20 to 25 ft while on the slight down hill graded slope. no matter how i pushed the brake pedal the brakes failed to respond and i utilized my training as an emergency apparatus driver and placed the vehicle into a lower gear and drifted it into an embankment to stop. i then backed the vehicle out of the embankment and the vehicle operated fine but the abs light remains on. as i see with other posts this is an obvious problem with the silverado that needs to be addressed immediately.

Please note mileage on this vehicle at time problems began was at 37,000. brake pedal was traveling to the floor at speeds below 10 mph causing abs light to come on and pedal to move up and down. more allowance in stopping distance was required. may 2010 - had to install new brake pads in the front and shoes in the rear. the rotors and slides were extremely corroded for a 4 year old vehicle with 37,000 miles. october 2011 took vehicle to gm certified service center for the continuing abs issue. corrosion was a main factor in causing the speed sensors to fail. diagnostic scan showed left wheel sensor bad. however, once replaced, they soon discovered right wheel sensor bad also. both sensors had to be drilled out due to corrosion. when the service department went to replace the right wheel sensor, the wheel sensor they had in stock was defective. defective parts in stock does say something about the product. the truck was kept overnight while a new set of wheel sensors was ordered. cost of diagnostic was $74.50. set of wheel sensors was $505. labor, tax and misc charges total $313.50 for a grand total of $893.19. the msrp on this vehicle at time of purchase was $34,000. our vehicles are garaged, kept clean. we are the sole owner of this truck. we do not live in chicago where we have to chip salt off our vehicles. this is the first vehicle we have ever experienced with this issue; therefore, we feel the parts are inferior and a recall should be in place. thank you. after talking with gm customer service center, there were recalls on older vehicles 1999-2005 (certain models) with the same issue, but nothing was noted on models from 2006 or newer. the gm certified service center stated that they do replace abs wheel sensors pretty frequently

At low speeds coming to a complete stop, the abs braking system will function and pulse causing an extended braking distance. along with it being a safety issue it is also an annoying nuisance always hearing the loud pulsing of the abs brakes.

While trying to stop vehicle, while brake pedal engaged, brakes released and lost braking power, continuing to go forward with very limited ability to stop the vehicle. stopping of vehicle was achieved by continuing multiple times to re-engage the brakes each time the brakes released and lost power. dealership inspected and tested the brakes. they found both front abs sensors dropping out due to the same problem as the chevrolet recall for silverado models up to year 2002, corrosion in the braking system. they followed the procedure outlined in the recall. because my 2006 was not in the recall, i paid $165 for the work. i contacted chevrolet and they will not reimburse my expense unless they extend the recall. an internet search reveals other owners of silverados manufactured after 2002 are also having the problem. nhtsa should be pushing chevrolet to extend the recall because it is a very dangerous problem and it's not isolated to just a few vehicles.

A problem exist with my 2006 chevrlet silverado1500 lt. when braking at low speeds, the low speed sensor causes the abs system to engage. when the abs system engages, the vehicle does not stop where intended. the vehicle travles around 5 feet further then it would under normal braking conditions, depending on speed. this happens only at low speeds(under 10mph) and every time the vehicle attempts to come to a complete stop. i have not tried to repair the problem. i have been told by a mechanic that the low speed sensors are dirty, and need to be cleaned or replaced. i have found other people complaining of this same problem with this model of vehicle. i feel this is a safety concern, do to a possibility of delayed braking. although i have not been personally involved in an accident, i am concerned that this problem exists. delayed braking can cause a vehicle to be involved in rear-end colissions, or to unintentionally enter intersections.

Low speed activation of abs braking system causing extended stopping distances and/or no stopping at all. no abs system codes set. no abs light comes on. dealer checked it out and said the front abs sensors were bad. i replaced both sensors, with the same problem existing, if not worse. the left sensor is available, but the right one was broken during removal and thrown away. i did not know i would need it. this happens every time the vehicle is driven and the brakes applied at low speed to come to a stop. there was a recall for earlier models of my vehicle and i believe my model year should be included as well as others. this is a dangerous situation. i think it should be repaired, recalled or resolved to the complete satisfaction of all involved!

2006 silverado 1500. unintended low speed abs activation. when coming to a stop, the abs activates when not neccesary, dry/clean pavement. this causes an increase in stopping distance by 15-20 feet making rear end collision inevitable. i notified gm, they stated there was a recall for exactly the problem i described, but my vehicle does not fall within the model year involved, i asked if they were going to expand the recall, i was told no. the abs activation also happens when i slow down to pull into my driveway....the activation is becoming more frequent and happens at speed of 10 mph and below....it is just a matter of tome before someone gets hurt. everybody is jumping all over toyota about the prius brakes, yet gm gets away with thiers.

Ref: 2006 silverado z71. the abs system on my vehicle routinely engages (releases brake pressure) during slowdown in the 3-8 mph speed range. this engagement requires longer stopping distances and can lead to dangerous situations in the last portion of a stop. this safety issue with my 2006 vehicle is identical to the one nhtsa identified for these same type vehicles 2005 and prior. although maintenance has not been accomplished on my vehicle yet, i believe it is the same safety issue as earlier models. *tr

Purchased 2006 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton pickup truck new. at 2400 miles, i started experiencing a pulsating in the brakes that created a severe shimmy in the steering wheel when the brakes became warm. the dealer resurfaced the two front rotors. the problem continued. at 6500 miles, the dealer stated the drums were out of round and replaced them. at 13,000 miles, problem still persisted and dealer replaced front rotors. at 21,000 miles, the problem was still occurring and i inquired with a different dealer who test drove the truck and said they have had this problem with other vehicles, including the impala automobile and stated that there is no fix for the problem. in may of 2008, i placed a call directly to gm's customer service and received a return call from a gentleman who stated he was calling from argentina to respond to my complaint. all that accomplished was for him to arrange another appointment with the original dealership for another inspection. at 23,000 miles, the dealership suggested that when i am driving down a steep incline that gm advises i should use a lower gear to help reduce the vehicle speed and not create an overheated condition which they say was causing the vibration. the vibration occurs on level ground as well as coming down a hill and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to control the vehicle when this occurs and may lead to an accident if the brakes fail. *tr
