In response to an information request letter sent by the office of defects investigation(odi) during preliminary evaluation pe08-010, gm provided odi with 41 allegations of non-crash engine compartment fires including 16 allegations of fires originating with the ignition in the off position.one of the fires was determined to be caused by an arson event.odi has also received 5 reports, 4 of which are of duplicative of reports provided by gm, alleging non-crash engine compartment fires in the subject vehicles.in total, odi is aware of 41 non-crashengine compartment fires in the subject vehicles that are unrelated to arson.eight of the 41 fire allegations also allege property damage as a result of the fires.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea08-010) to further assess the scope, frequency, origin and cause of the alleged non-crash related engine compartment fires in the subject vehicles.

In a letter dated august 27, 2008, general motors corp. (gm) notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 08v-441) to address a safety relateddefect that can result in engine compartment fire in approximately 850,000 vehicles equipped with a heated windshield washer fluid option.the subject vehicles of this investigation comprise over three-quarters of the recall population. according to gm, a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the windshield washer fluid heater module may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. this may cause other electrical features to malfunction, create an odor or cause smoke and in rare cases it may cause a fire.as a remedy, gm dealers will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse. in addition to the subject vehicles, several other gm models with the heated windshield washer fluid option are included in recall 08v-441: my 2006-2008 buick lucerne (manufactured august 2005 through november 2007); my 2008 buick enclave (manufactured february 2007 through april 2007); my 2006-2008 cadillac dts (manufactured may 2007 through november 2007); my 2007-2008 saturn outlook (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007); and my 2007-2008 gmc acadia (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007) vehicles.gm is instructing owners to take their vehicle to a dealer for service if they experience symptoms of windshield washer heater module short circuits. gm's recall resolves the safety defect concerns pursued by this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed.

Around the time my truck hit the 42000 mile mark the oil low indicator warning illuminated on my instrument panel. i took it in to the dealer since it was well under warranty. the dealer began an oil consumption test and the truck continued to go through oil regularly. sometimes just half a quart but sometimes as much as 1 1/2 quarts. the dealership did work on the engine 6 months into this issue but that did not stop the oil consumption. after dealing with them for over 12 months, and the low oil light coming on 2 more times, i was told there was nothing wrong with the truck and according to gm specs, consuming 1 quart of engine oil every 2000 miles, was acceptable. i called and complained to the gm corporate offices but was told that they could not contradict the dealership since they were the ones monitoring the oil consumption issue. i told them that by their specs if i took my family on a road trip from ca to ny and back, i would have to replace at least 3 quarts, or half the total in the crank case, during the trip. i know of no other automobile manufacturer that would find this acceptable. gm says it is. in my opinion, this is a safety issue that gm is well aware of and failing to address, even when an owner has followed the recommended maintenance schedule and reported the issue in a timely fashion. i will not own another gm product. their customer-no-service is terrible and contrary to the television ads, they do not stand behind their products.

2007 chevorlet silverado 1500 2wd v8 4.8l, engine fire. fire department & insurance company both do not believe there was fraud or arson. total loss. the vehicle was parked outside of my residence on the residential driveway at about 3:50a.m. we heard a blow which was the tire in the front driver's side. we called police plus fire department. the engine front part of truck plus the 2 tire's in front and engine caught on fire. the hood still on, and the windows did not break. the inside of the vehicle good just wet after the fact. fire report says area of fire origin was the engine area, running gear, wheel area. item first ignited was the pipe, duct, conduit & hose covering. it was about 2:30a.m. same day we got home. it had not been 2 hours that we drove the vehicle. it was parked and the ignition off when this fire started. my driver and passenger door must have unlocked and the back driver and passenger doors stayed locked because when the fire department put out fire the doors were that way. i have a 6 year old daughter that rides in the back seat. the fire department said the fire started drivers side/engine. this is a very terrifying time. i'm scared to even purchase a truck anymore. we could have been in the vehicle, my husband and i plus our daughter. i used to drive my truck with the thought that i was safe in it for the size of it and that it was a chevy, but now i can't even have that thought cross my mind. your not safe anywhere, not even in your vehicle because not only if there is a car wreck, a drunl driver hits you, someone failed to stop at a stop sign and hit you, now if your ignition is in the off position your truck can catch on fire, at your residence, parked in a garage, parked beside other vehicles, and who knows the fire could have started as i and my family were in it too. your not safe. insurance co pays the value and book closed. i have no vehicle to show for those 3 years. no fraud no arson and no vehicle. and nothing done. it's not right. *tr

2007 chevrolet silverado 5.3l v-8 engine with active fuel management and throttle by wire. vehicle will not idle down properly or slow down properly or timely. i believe 2 possible causes, active fuel management system trying to maintain sail speed in a fuel saving mode and/or throttle position sensor does not know where the drivers foot is. vehicle performs like the cruise control is on at all times, will ultimately slow down after excessive amount of time. low speed operation is especially problematic brakes are critical in controlling engine speed and obviously vehicle speed. with foot off accelerator vehicle will maintain 10 mph speed in parking lot, will travel up hill for aprox. 30 to 50 feet before beginning to decelerate. throttle response is extremely delayed and transmission shift points are confused at times. at times i place vehicle in neutral going down hill to get engine out of sustained v-4 fuel saving mode so i can better control downhill speed. dealer contacted and vehicle inspected, i was informed that is the way the system operates and can not be adjusted. also told that california emissions standards prohibit complete engine idle down because sudden idle down will generate unburned fuel. i was told that the maintained speed was the sail speed and that was just the way it is designed to operate. vehicle performance is not confident or precise, driver must be constantly aware of unintentional acceleration via sustained speed and lack of deceleration when wanted. *jb

I have a 2007 chevy siverado 4.3 l v6 engine. the emissons system went crazy, first saying coolant temperature too low for engine, replaced thermostat that went bad,got stuck open. light goes out. next day light back on says evap solenoid vent has grooss leak. there r no replacemant parts for this failure come 2 find out after talking to dealer. u have to buy whole new solenoid vent system and add 5/8 heater hose to rerun the vent so dirt, dust and debris is harder to enter the vent. they say its a flaw in design so gm redesigned it and this is how to fix it. if they know its a bad design then they should pay for it to be replaced with their new design.
