The anti-lock brake system fails on dry pavement when a bump or separation is contacted in the pavement during the braking operation, resulting in lost of braking capacity. this occurs usually between speeds of 25-35 mph during braking while the vehicle is slowing down. if during that time, a bump or rise occurs in the pavement, it seems like traction is lost and braking capacity is diminished, resulting in increased stopping distance. often this occurs at stop signs and intersections, occasionally when attempting to turn, resulting in hazardous handling. dealer has been notified several times, and attempts to repair by replacement of gasket on fluid reservior lid of master cylinder dimished the symptoms but did not rectify the problem. hazardous braking situations continues when brake failure and/or increased stopping distance on dry payment occurs. *ak

Have 1998 chevy silverado 1500 short-bed v-6 pickup with abs brake problems. have researched and found there is a history of this problem. the maker is fully aware of the problem but only recalled 1999 and later models. i don't know how they decided that one, but i do know it has to do with money! in december of 2005, i was in an accident due to the truck brakes failing with the anti-lock pulsing on and i had no braking time and hit another vehicle. it is a well known problem with many gmc truck owners. it's the reason i will never own another gmc product! if a manufacturer has knowledge of a defect and does nothing, it is wrong! at slow speeds when coming to a stop, the abs system kicks on and makes it nearly impossible to stop on time. took it to a dealer who ran the vin and said my truck was not covered. it is not right! a maker who knows of a defect should have to make good on its repair to correct the issue. *jb

Re: recall # 05v379000 for 1999 through 2002 chevrolet silverado pick up trucks. please be advised that i have a 1998 silverado chevy truck and i experienced this exact same problem (unwanted anti-lock brake system (abs) activation) in jan. 2005 five (5) months prior to the recall. i was charged $653.94 to repair my vehicle . i have tried to receive some satisfaction from gm with no results. the vehicle only had 20340 miles on it at that time. i believe the 1998 silverado trucks should have been included in this recall. *jb

My 1998 chevrolet pickup seems to have an ongoing problem in the anti-lock brake system. the system activates on dry or wet pavement at slow speeds. it's like a pulsating feeling on the pedal or i like to call it a crunching feel with a noise. it does this about 90% of the time. i have spent over $600 at an independent repair shop with out any real diffrence in the way it works. at this point i have been putting up with the problem wondering if the system will fail. iwould guess that it takes about 2 to 5 ft. extra to stop at 5 to 10 mph.*ak

In july of 2000 i purchased a 1998 chevrolet silverado, used, from a ford dealership. there was only a 30 day warranty. in the beginning of december the brakes went on the vehicle. the brakes and rotors were replaced. on december 24, 2000, without any notice whatsoever, while shifting the truck into reverse i noticed it would not move. i put it into drive and it moved. after having the truck looked at, it was determined that there was a problem with the transmission. when i called the dealership where the truck was purchased, i was told that it would cost approximately $2,000.00 to re-build the transmission. after only having the truck for six months, driving it 30 miles round trip to work, never using the vehicle as a plow truck and never misusing the vehicle i would like to know how a vehicle of this year could lose such a major unit and have no recourse on the part of the dealership or manufacturer, that it become the responsibility of the owner to correct such an expensive error. *ak

It started witin 1-2 months of purchase, i started having brake problems, since that time i have had my truck to the car dealer for repairs or all 4 brakes and other parts 100% replaced, on the last visit the dealer told me that i would have to pay 1/2 of the $600. bill and the next time they would pay nothing. i just had my tires replace for the first time on 2/14/00 and les schwab told me my brakes were to a 10-15% balance left. with this inf. it will make it 5 times my brakes will have to be replaced and the dealer will do nothing. while sitting at a stop light and then try to go sometimes the brakes are locked up and it won't move, and other times when i need to stop even on dry pavement the anti lock will kick in and start jerking the truck around. i was told by the people at the attorney generals office i should contact you about this matter. i have sent an em to the chev dealer and directly to chev but have been ignored. i'm getting worried about the safety of my family and myself while being in this truck. please help me where you can with this matter. thank you dale harder. *ak

When applying brakes there is no action until a long brake pedal stroke finally engages the brakes. this results in extra delay time before brakes are actually applied. the dealer looked at the brakes and adjusted the rear brakes. this did not improve the brake pedal squashy no action, delay to application of brakes. the dealer's shop repair supervisor/ manager drove the vehicle and demonstrated that the vehicle stopped fine. however, he had performed this test with his foot already on and depressing the brake pedal before actually attempting to stop. this approach of course removed the delay to apply the brakes, but hardly a normal way to drive. i have seen this reported in a number of automotive magazines as a problem as well as experiencing it with other chevrolet pickups 1995 thru 1999 models. it seems that a reprogramming of the abs module or something should be done, this is very dangerous. as a final point , my 1998 chrevolet malibu abs brake action is instantaneous, as soon as you touch the brake pedal! it's not because it's a smaller vehicle and not a truck as the dealer tried to imply(baloney!) *ak

*ak
