I was a victim of the may 1999 tornados. my home and previous auto were completely destroyed by the storm. smicklas chevrolet knew i was desperate when i bought this truck new on may 12, 1999. the truck was a demonstrator, with 3585 miles on it. after i had it about two and = months, and had driven it less than 4,500 miles, a serious vibration appeared in the steering whenever the truck reached about 60 miles/hour. the shimmy is present all the time at highway speed, and sometimes the truck also pulls to the right. between july of 1999 and july of 2000, i brought the truck back to smicklas seven times to have the steering defect corrected. i have service records for those occasions (7/31/99, 8/21/99, 8/24/99, 9/28/99, 10/20/99, 11/17/99 and 7/17/00). smicklas just kept fooling with the tires and wheel alignment, even though it should have been obvious after the first three tries that this was not the problem. the steering defect is still there.

I own a 1999 silverado 1500 pickup extended cab 4x4 and i have a major issue. my truck has had vibration in front end since day one. we have taken it to dealer ship on many occasions. before the truck was a year old it has had a total of 33 service days. its been in shop about six times since then. it has had 16 tires put on the truck not to mention hubs replaced due to wrong hubs for veh weight, shackles replaced due to wrong shackles for weight, steering shaft replaced, studs and nuts replaced due to lug nut seized, wheels replaced due to out of round and warped, countless break down of tire and resealed due to air leaks, dash panel replaced due to peeling, bezel lens replaced due to vibration causing it to crack, manual window regulators replaced due to coming apart internally, doors weather strip replaced due to excessive noise in cab, back glass latches replaced due to weak latch and wind noise. we have made countless attempts to have vibration problem fixed and they keep saying it is tires. we have been through enough tires now and it never fixes the problem. found out that gm has put some extra braces under some 99, 00, and 01 trucks. is this an attempt to cure their vibration problems? i cant imagin it being the tires. i think gm knows there is something not right. just not owning up to it. please help. i have a five year old daughter and i fear for her saftey as well as mine due to the excessive vibration this truck has. *ak

I took delivery of vehicle on 3-1-99. noticed front end vibration at 65 mph. took vehicle back to dealer. i was told it was a goodyear tire problem. they replaced all tires. problem remained as well as feeling a shaking in the steering on rough or bumpy roads. took vehicle back to dealer. i was told that it was a drive shaft problem. shims were placed in the driveshaft. problem then became much worse. vibration shook entire vehicle making steering difficult. took vehicle back to dealer. shims were removed. gm knows about multiple problems and their only reply was in 70 days we might have a fix. in 70 days the driveshaft might come up through the floor of my truck, too. please look into these problems before someone is killed. gm sure doesn't care! i have consulted three dealership service departments - two chevrolet and one gmc. they all admitted to having at least 6 or 7 trucks with these problems. multiply that by the number of chevrolet and gmc dealerships in this country and you will see the magnitude of these problems. none of us can take on gm. please help us. i might suggest that if gm can correct the problems, that they offer a free extended warrantee to all who were affected by these problems. *ak

Dt: the contact stated abs brakes kicked in at low speeds. the contact's vehicle was having the same problems as described in recall 05v379000. the contact stated the state of wisconsin was not included in the recall. he had it repaired about one year and half ago, in february 2004. they told him the hubs were corroded, and had to have the left hub assembly replaced. now, he was having the same problem with the right hub assembly. abs light did not come on. he started having the problems in november 2003. *ak

The fuel gauge sending unit failed (i go by mileage to know if i need fuel or not). driver's side seat belt locks up when you go to look to change lanes (dealer couldn't reproduce the problem--so it's never been fixed). passenger seat belt locks up if you just lean forward to roll down the window (was told this was a mechanism for a baby seat--didn't think car seats were supposed to be in the front seat). right side daytime running lamp burned out a long time ago. abs module failed (had to pull the fuse so the pump wouldn't burn up) therefore the truck no longer has abs. driver's side front wheel hub failed due to lack of grease in the non-consumer maintainable bearing (the whole hub had to be replaced). the water pump has already failed (replaced that). the transmission is starting to slip here & there. the accelerator sticks causing you to have to jam on it in parking lots & other places where it's just not safe to be darting forward. this model year was just a bad year for gm. they need to fix these problems. this is the worst gm vehicle i've ever owned (and i've been a loyal gm customer all my driving years). *ak

My complaint is the new front wheel bearing hubs. these units are used on my 1999 chevy truck. the bearing hub assembly is a prelubed unit. i was on the high-way running at about 70 mph. i started to hear a hi pitch noise from the front end of my truck. i stopped to check this out. i returned home very slow. my investigation turned up,that the wheel bearing was bad. i would like to see g.m. redesign this unit so that it can be lubed. i also feel that this is a safety issue. there was no warning. i also feel that maybe the type of lube used should also be changed. i have been driving chevy cars or trucks for the pass thirty years. i must stress that the item in question is on the front end, if a person were to lose control ,that person will harm others. *jb

SUSPENSION - FRONT - STABILIZER BAR
03/09/200461322106/26/1999
Front suspension stabilizer bar link fell off on drivers side, passenger side would fall off if not checked and tightened to manufacturers torque specs. this is a 60k mile truck, never wrecked, dealer maintained, never off road, never abused, 70% highway miles, no suspension work ever done except shock replacement. handling becomes unpredictable when one side comes loose, like on my truck. *jb
SUSPENSION - FRONT - WHEEL BEARING

Dt: the consumer stated the brakes failed at low speed, less than 20 mph. this was an intermittent problem. the vehicle had been taken to the dealership, the first time they said it was due to rust on the rotors. they replaced the rotors, but that did not fix the problem. the bearing hub assembly was replaced, the problem ceased for about a year. the bearing hub assembly hwas been replaced three times. the problem recurred. there was no accident. *ak

Brake failure. abs activated on my 1999 silverado pickup and truck would not stop and rolled into traffic lane from gas station. this has happened a number of times, necessitating pulling of the abs fuse in engine compartment thus rendering abs inoperative. had wheel hub bearing unit replaced at a cost of $377.00 and the day after the abs activated again and vehicle would not stop. pulled fuse again and have not replaced. checked around the country in ny and ok., and had sons check with dealers and they asked why do you want to know if a problem. dealer here says not a problem but i feel it should be looked into before maybe more people have problem and are killed.*ak

Consumer was driving about 10-15 mph applied brakes and abs just pulsated, and there was no braking action. upon inspection of vehicle consumer found out wheel bearing hub and abs were connected. when wheel bearings were worn out abs would fail. dealer stated chevrolet was aware of this problem.*ak consumer hit a barrier post due to the faulty abs brakes damaging the front end of vehicle, even though gm is aware of problem they will not pay damages, when the hub wears the antilock sensor reads falsely leading to no brakes. *slc

SUSPENSION - MULTIPLE AXLE
06/30/199902/01/1999
Excessive shimmy in the front end at approximately 60 to 65 mph. truck has been brought back to the dealership numerous times for repair, but no repair was available. we were told when a repair was available we would be called. to date, there is no repair available. i my opinion it is a hazardous situation due to loss of control, especially in wet weather. we have no idea if the problem is causing other front end damage. the tires have been rotated and balanced, front end aligned and then we brought it back to the dealership as per bulletin #99-03-002 (replaced both front hub bearing assemblies/ right and left rear spring eye bushings, and both rear shocks).*ak

Truck has been at dealer for repair total of 35 days before 1st anniv. of ownership with over 20 separate problems, 5 of which are unresolved to this date. vehicle is at dealer now for final repair before tn lemon law can be implemented. worst and current problems are front end alignment (pulls to right), front brake squealing (pads replaced twice, rotors turned once), rear end vibration at any speed and clanking sound over bumps(all 4 tires, both rear leaf spring stacks, all 4 shocks replaced. one shock had broken shaft) , engine backfires & knocks at startup (dealer reprogrammed comp. w/no results except to improve power, but accel. pedal sticks now!), trans. slips from dead stop for few seconds about once per week, 4wd transfer case slipped in low in deep snow (replaced fluid and did reprogram. results??), ext. cab pop out windows replaced due to poor fit (one exploded upon removal & dealer had to repaint side of truck. new ones are no better than originals!), rear seat missing rubber mounts(dealer replaced, but now seat makes popping noise due to rear cab wall flexing!), drive shaft makes loud clanking sound when shifting from park(dealer says this normal!). problems repaired: rear brake line loose & in harms way(missing mount replaced), steering box loose and steering column rattled and loose around any turns(box tightened and column shaft replaced), drivers side window switch sticking in down posit.(switch replaced), all door weatherstrips and drip rail molding loose (replaced all), rear license plate light broken and replaced, door lock levers fell out of both doors(replaced both). lemon, lemon, lemon!!!!!!!!!!*ak( dot number: )
