FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

I took my 1500 chev pick-up to a gm dealer in ri,( hurd gmc) after i smelled gasoline when driving, the service dept informed me that the fuel line is rotted (at or near the fuel filter)and leaking gasoline near the exhaust, they told me not to drive the truck, for fear of a fire. they also noted that the brake lines the run down the drivers side frame rail are also rotted . i have repaired other brake lines in the front, last year, because of leaking brake fluid, the gm dealer quoted me a price of around $2000.00 to replace the entire fuel line from the tank to the injectors. which included replacment of all rotted brake lines. i have parked the truck for fear of a fire, or possible loss of brakes. the truck is not a rusted mess underneath, i took care not to drive on saltly roads, these lines are made of raw steel, i believe if they were stainless steel, i would not be in this mess. what does one do with a perfectly good truck, but can't drive it for fear of fire or crash ???

Rear fuel tank strap was rusty. broke off going down the road at 55 mph. did not cause an accident.
08/03/2011163000
Noticed fuel tank strap hanging from underneath vehicle. upon inspection of fuel tank strap noticed that the strap had rusted & separated about four inches from the bolt mounting location. fuel tank did not fall to the ground but probably would have if i kept driving it. noticed that gm uses a rubberized coating on the strap. water & moisture were able to migrate into the top area of the coating and sit between the rubber coating and the strap & not have any exit point. this caused a moist environment and over time accelerated rust/corrosion between the rubber coating & the steel strap. poor design & serious safety issue. pictures are available (can't copy into this form). multiple similar complaints found on the internet.

The rubber hoses run from the top of the fuel tank then down the front of the fuel tank, are loosely clamped, then connect to the metal lines that run along the frame of the truck. the clamps appear to be hard sharp-edged plastic. my problem is that the one line completely failed and was leaking. then spraying gas from beneath the truck. the danger of heat from the catalytic converter setting the truck on fire was my primary concern. i contacted the chevrolet customer assistance center and they opened ticket 1-48530166. they advised me to get the vehicle to an authorized chevrolet dealer which i did. they have estimated the repair cost to be $370. i feel that this an important safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately. the assembly is mickey mouse at best. this truck has less than 40000 miles and already these lines have worn through spraying fuel underneath my vehicle. it is hard to imagine that chevrolet has not seen this already yet no mention is made of this problem on their web site. of course not many 2000 trucks will have 40000 miles on them yet. i will be happy to cooperate in any manner on this issue. dt

I have had problems with this vehicle since i bought it. my brakes habitually fail if i hit a bump while braking, and i have been told by both the dealer and the manufacturer that my brakes are operating within the normal specs for this vehicle and the driving conditions in my area. they do nothing to fix the problem. i use my personal vehicle to respond to fires and medical emergencies, and am concerned that i will have an accident en route to help someone. also, my automatic transmission occasionally goes into neutral while stopped in traffic, or will not engage upon putting it in 'drive', but the dealership is unable to duplicte the problem, so they say they can't fix it. my fuel pump has failed and been replaced more than once. my windshield wipers repeatedly fail on the passenger side.*ak

Abs system inoperative since 70,000 miles due to burnt control module. paid dealer $100 to test to find out repairs will be in excess of $900. module located on frame rail where it takes all water from lf tire. numerous others that i know of with same problem. no help from either gm or dealer. duct shields/backing plates completely corroded at 175000 miles as well as the rear differential cover. vehicle has not been in any unusual conditions. failure of the backing plate caused emergency brake shoes to become misaligned and damage rotors and service brakes. at 65000 miles gas gauge became sporadic. dealer service rep informed that they go bad due to cold gas being put into vehicle in winter. entire pump assembly needs replaced at $380. i realize truck has now 175000 miles, but i know too many others and have read hundreds of posts on message boards about the exact same problems.

Fuel module in the gas tank was faulty and had to be replaced at my expense. the new module (ki 3.107) which was an updated model was installed as this was a frequent problem for the silverado pickups. mine is a 2000, vin 2gcec19t7y1264090. the faulty module resulted in blowing a 20 amp fuse multiple times. the local dealership required several hours of trouble shooting and company consultation to learn that the tank module was the problem as this is a frequent problem, so they replaced it with an improved version, but since my pickup had 50,000 miles on it i had to pay the full price of the module installation. i feel that this situation of an electrical wire running into the gas tank to a component part that has frequently shorted out presents a real danger. i request this be investigated for a possible recall. i have verbally been denied any help with the cost of this by the chevrolet motor division ssustomer assistance center, complaint #1-131209176. the rationale for the disinterest was oh, its just one of those things that happens. i wish you to consider this case for investigation relative to a recall on this module. feel free to contact me for more information. thanks, ross cole. *ak

Ongoing problem for rough idle, from the time the vehicle was purchased new. several dealers told me it was normal, another said it was problem with the 5.3 liter; however, nothing to worry about. fuel injectors have been cleaned several times. now vehicle out of warranty. after vehicle is up to operating temperature and is shut off and remains for approximately half hour, upon restarting, vehicle tumbles. i contacted chevrolet customer service who provided me with an extended warranty on the engine and they have washed there hands of any other problems they may occur. my complaint is the rough idle has always been present, and now the tumbling is being caused as a result of the prior problem. this vehicle has been in service numerous times and the problem has not been diagnosed by chevrolet. do any service bulletins exist for a similar problem as this? file #1-89542103 & 1-89542103. automatic transmission was another issue that was addressed while under warranty. now, tcc valve is sticking causing a delayed gear engagement. again, sorry but your vehicle is out of warranty. *la

The engine developed a skip while on vacation. i brought it to a garage, the technician diagnosed the problem as clogged fuel injectors. he showed me some clogged injectors from another 2000 silverado that he had repaired the previous week. he claimed that rust was in the gas tank, and the fuel pump sandblasted the rust through the fuel filter and into the fuel injectors. it turns out that my truck had the same problem. he replaced the fuel injectors (all 8) and cleaned the fuel rails. he installed a new fuel filter. this cost over $1,100. after rturning from vacation, i thought i should find the cause of the rust in the fuel system. i took the gas tank out and discovered the plastic gas tank was full of rust. i tipped the el pump assembly upside down, and a great quantity of rusty gasoline poured out. i took this assembly apart and discovered that the fuel pump motor itself (a small steel canister device) was a ball of rust. the pump evidently is not galvanized or plated. the pump motor is the only steel component in the tank. the tank itself cannot rust. the rust from the pump was forced into the fuel system, causing the clogged fuel injectors. the price of the pump, not counting labor, is $409.00. *ak

Looking at the complaints and service bulletins, it's obvious that gm has a problem with their fuel level gauge sending unit in the tank. i also have the problem, along with many others in the area. it appears that no one intends to do anything about it. it appears that someone is going to have to run out of gas in the middle of a busy highway, and when trying to get off the hwy, somebody gets killed, before anything is done. or, one of our wives gets stranded by running out of gas, and raped and/or murdered, before anything is done. this will keep going until one of the above incidents occurs and a class action suit of all the people that have the problem come together in the suit. we all know what happens then. the lawyers win, and everybody else looses. fixing the problem would certainly be the cheapest corrective action in the long run. *jb

Faulty fuel gauge, jumps from full to empty when truck is idleing and during driving. talked with other owners and to large companies that use chevy trucks and found out that this problem only exist with the chevy's and not gmc counter part. there should be a recall on this since this problem has been addressed since 1998. the dealership told me it was afuel pump issue.*ak

In january 2004 my gas guage started jumping from full to empty.when you give the gas tank a gentle hit with your hand, the problem goes away. i have read that many other gm owners have had this problem. i don't go to the dealer because the technicians do poor work. i use the trip odometer and filled up the gas tank at 300 miles. i believe there should be a recall. somebody could run out of gas in a very dangerous location.*ak

Fuel gauge is very irractic. shows low fuel even when tank is full. asked service manager about problem and he said it's a common problem with that vehicle and very expensive to repair, but you get a new fuel pump. should be recalled and repaired free by gm.*ak

Fuel gauge does not read correctly the amount of fuel in tank. very dangerous for multiple drivers of same vehicle, especially for women with infants and young children. problem began as soon as i purchased the truck. problem occurs each time vehicle is driven. dealer wants $700 for repair. several owners of same model truck have described same problem. this should definitely be a recall for obvious reasons. *ak

I own a 2000 chevrolet silverado truck, the past few months my fuel gauge has been erratic. the tank will show empty at times and full at others. you can't trust the fuel gauge. i have taken it to a local mechanic and was told this was a big problem with chevrolet trucks and that it would cost about $1000.00 to repair. i have spoken to other chevrolet owners with trucks and they too have the same problem and was told it would have to be repaired by chevrolet with an estimated expense between $1000.00 to $1200.00. this problem should be a part of the recalls for this particular truck. *ak

Fuel gauge acts erractically. while idling it will drop to empty and low fuel light will come on, even if the tank is full. it usually goes back up after vehicle begins moving again, sometimes right away or sometimes it takes miles down the road. i took this problem to the dealer and they said it was a bad fuel level sensor,at a cost of over $300.00 to fix it. this is a 2000 silverado 1500 4x4 pickup. this seems like a problem with manufacturing to me and should be recalled. *ak

Fuel gauge does not work. after filling up gas tank, low fuel warning light comes on. gauge goes from full to empty. fuel gauge is unreliable. if trip odometer is not reset at time of fill-up, i have no idea how much fuel i have left in tank. if i miscalculate, i could run out of gas without notice and this could cause a dangerous situation. *la

The fuel gauge shows that the truck is on empty which also makes the low fuel light to come on. the truck has either a full tank of gas or has plenty of gas. the dealership said it was a problem with the fuel sensor and acted like it is very common. i have also talked to other owners that have the same complaint.*ak
