PE03049GENERAL MOTORS CORP.10/23/200302/19/2004TAILGATE CABLE BREAKAGE
During the pe, odidiscovered that one or both of the tailgate support cables can break due to the effects of metal fatigue at the point where the cable flexes when the lift gate is opened and closed. concurrently, the strength of the cable degrades over time due to corrosion of the wire strands in the support cables.when the vehicle is stationary and cargo is being loaded or unloaded, the tailgate can tip downward displacing cargo and/or people to the ground without warning.odi is also aware of one total separation of the tailgate from the vehicle.owners cannot easily detect whether the support cabes are damaged or corroded because they are covered by a protective sheath.odi is upgrading this preliminary evaluation for further appropriate action.model year 2003 vehicles will be added to the investigation.further, we will incude additional vehicles, those being the avalanche and cadillac ext, model years 2002-2003, and the sierra, model years 1999-2003.

Dt: 2000 chevrolet silverado was purchased new and after 36 months the warranty expired, the driver's side door locked, and would not open. they were all power locks. driver's door could not be opened, it would not unlock with the keyless entry or the key itself. took vehicle to a dealer, who said there was no way they could repair the problem because they could not get the door open. they suggested cutting the door off, and they would sell consumer a new door. did not contact gm because consumer's father worked for gm, and could lose his job if there was a complaint. vehicle was purchased under employee discount. after about a month or 6 weeks of driving when taking key out of the ignition there was a sound from the driver's side door-it sounded as if there was a piece falling from the door. currently, the door is unlocked and will not lock manually, with key or power. no repairs were done. as of last week the problem started with the passenger's side door. it will not unlock with key or power, similar to the problem on driver's side door . *ak

Dt: the contact stated doors will not open from the inside. the locks were electrical, and the window had to be rolled down to open the door from the outside. has been in contact with the dealer. they informed him that he would have to order another handle for the vehicle. the vehicle was not under warranty and no repairs have been made. the outside door handles malfunctioned. when pulling them out to open the door and they stayed out. when getting into the truck and closing the door it locked automatically. with the outside handle out the door will not unlock electrically or mechanically from the inside. the only way to get the door unlocked was to open the window and push the handle in. if the window failed to open the contact would be trapped in the vehicle. manufacturer refused to fix or replace the handles. *ak

I own a 2000 chevy silverado truck. it has 57,000 miles and is in excellent condition. on or about july 09 2005, the power lock mechanism for the passenger door stopped working. the drivers side door still worked. i thought it might be a blown fuse but after checking all fuses determined that wasn't the problem. i felt that my key to the doors would allow access to the passenger side but it would not open. the key did work on the drivers side. the slide bar on the passenger side door also could not move thus rendering that door in a constant state of being locked. i became very concerned that a vehicle could be made with power locks and not have some system to manually allow the opening of the vehicle. if the vehicle were in an accident and the only way out was the passenger door the occupant could face serious injury or even death. i sent an e mail to general motors customer assistance and explained the problem. i wanted to speak to an engineer to find out why a vehicle would function like this but was told that they could not honor my request and i needed to bring the truck to a dealer for repairs my stance is i do not trust some dealers and that wouldn't determine if the design has a major flaw. my vehicle might have been fixed at my expense but perhaps another owner might be having similar problems due to faulty designs which is a severe safety risk. i am requesting this matter receives a quick investigation before a serious injury or death occurs. general motors does not seem to be concerned. i do not want to have general motors to repair this truck until an independent study is performed. i will not allow any other passengers in this truck.*jb

Rear passenger doorts on chevy silverado extened cab do not lock completely in temperatures below 30 degrees until heat is distributed in the cab. have been unable to get an explanation from any general motors experts or resolve the problem. i contend that it occurs because both the top & bottom latch's are made of plastic/pvc material which presents a poteial safety hazard if weight is applied against the doors, hit by another vehicle etc. the indiacated date below is only one of several days since 2000. *ak

Problem #1 truck has a vibration since purchase date. dealer checked the balance of the tires 4 times and found them out of balance, tires were then balanced and rotated. but the vibration still existed. service manager stated that this was a problem i would have to live with. manufacture states all trucks have vibration. problem #2 the rear door will not latch after being opened in freezing weather, the front door will not close completely as it latches to the rear door. the doors can be closed completely after the interior has been warmed up enough for the locks to thaw, about 5 miles of travel with the heater running.*ak

The cables just broke today on the tailgate of my 2000 silverado while i was standing on the tail gate. the description is exactly as investigated in the below. *ak make: chevrolet model: silverado year: 2000 nhtsa action number: ea04005 summary: one or both of the tailgate support cables can break due to the effects of metal fatigue at the point where the cable flexes when the lift gate is opened and closed. concurrently, the strength of the cable degrades over time due to corrosion of the wire strands in the support cables. when the vehicle is stationary and cargo is being loaded or unloaded, the tailgate can tip downward displacing cargo and/or people to the ground without warning. the majority of known injuries have resulted from the tailgate downward tip. one odi complaint reported that the tailgate separated from a moving vehicle. owners cannot easily detect whether the support cables are damaged or corroded because the cables are covered by a protective plastic sheath.
