Defect SummarySome pickup trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles equipped with a hydraulic pump driveshaft that can fracture, resulting in immediate loss of hydraulic power steering assist. on certain vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, the same condition can result in loss of power assist for braking after the reserve pressure is depleted.
Consequence SummaryAn inoperative pump can cause increased steering effort, and in hydro-boost equipped vehicles also increased braking effort, but does not completely eliminate the ability to steer or slow the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the hydraulic pump. the campaign began on february 14, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

Transmission needs to be replaced. after highway driving, the transmission will not engage in 2nd or 3rd gear. no error message or warning appears. this nearly caused an accident when the transmission failed at an intersection. i bought the truck in july to assist w/rescues and cannot put the animals or myself at risk. chevrolet is aware of this issue; the local chevy dealership said they have seen it often; my personal mechanic has seen it often. chevrolet asked me to take it to their dealership and have the diagnostics run. $90 and confirmation transmission needed. now they want me to pay $2,500 to have a new transmission put in by their dealership, then discuss any reimbursement. this is a very dangerous known defect and chevrolet does not guarantee the replacement transmission will not do the same. it appears a death will be required before chevrolet takes responsibility, then they can deal with a class action suit. *nm

Dt: about 3 or 4 moths ago, there was a light that came on in vehicle that said transmission fluid hot. this happened on the interstate. also, there was a vehicle warning light that instructed driver to pull over and let vehicle idle. owner took it to dealer, who reported that there was more than normal metal shavings in the transmission fluid pan, and that the clutch could be going out. then, dealer changed fluid and filter, and instructed the owner that he could continue driving it until it absolutely had to be repaired. the owner continued driving the vehicle, and has hard shifting. owner called the dealership, who reported that could be a symptom of the computer trying to compensate fort he transmission which was failing. then on the 12th of july 2005 the message came on again transmission fluid hot. then owner contacted gm directly, who tried to sell the owner a new truck, but offered no assistance to owner with transmission problem. the vehicle was going to be repaired. the vehicle was regularly serviced with some service records available. there were no other major issues with the truck.*ak

Transmission failed at 77,200 miles. transmission was replaced at owner's expense. dealership stated that there was no reason for the transmission to fail at that mileage unless the truck was used on a farm or consistently used for heavy towing. the truck was not used on a farm and was used for towing (a boat and 2 snowmobilies) about 10 times per year.

When taking off from a stopped position and coming to a stop there is a deep squeeking sound coming somewhere between the driveshaft and transmission. i was told by chevy garage there was a fix for the extended cab version but not my regular cab truck. it will eventually take money to fix because anything that squeeks is rubbing and will eventually wear out. it was a problem when i reached 15,000 miles and is still a problem and loud aggrevation at 61000 miles. it is even bad enough that when i come to a redlight or a stop sign people think i am beeping my horn at them. it has been four years and 46000 miles later and there is no fix for the vehicle to my knowledge. plus the tires didnt last 40000 miles the brake line had to be repaired the steering linkage is bad and when i had a cracked window replaced the person showed me that there was no seal placed around the window to keep it from leaking. so long chevy hello ford.*ak

I own a 2000 chevrolet silverado 2wd lt with towing package. the truck has never towed a vehicle and currently has only 41,835 miles. on december 29, 2003, i was driving home from work when the automatic transmission failed. i really never heard of a transmission failing at 41,000 miles. the truck has the towing package and is heavy duty on the transmission. i never towed a car with this truck or carried less than 500 lbs in the bed. i feel that this problem should be reviewed because i could have been towing a vehicle and going up an incline. i feel that this is serious safety hazard to other drivers on the road. this is not a one time problem, because i have other friends with silverados that are replacing their transmissions less than 50,000 miles. a transmission by design should last at least 100,000 miles. i have contacted gm about this problem and they say that there is no service bulletins or recall. my incident is isolated and gm is only wiling to replace 50% of the cost. the dealership that i took the truck to had 3 other people with similar problems. i have another local friend with the same problem. this is isolated??? http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_silverado_transmission.html this is a serious hazard to other drivers on the road today. the cost of a new transmission from the dealer is $2400 and gm is willing to reimburse you 50% of that cost. the cost is so overinflated that this is not a fix. local shops will charge you to rebuild the transmission for around $1200. i think gm, just wants to make money on these transmissions. there is a service bulletin describing a problem with the driveshaft causing a clunking noise. gm failed to fix this problem and it causing these auto transmissions to fail prematurely. my guess is that the driveshaft is not the correct length and is moving back and forth thus causing a clunking noise. over a period of time this would cause the transmission to fail.

Ongoing problem for rough idle, from the time the vehicle was purchased new. several dealers told me it was normal, another said it was problem with the 5.3 liter; however, nothing to worry about. fuel injectors have been cleaned several times. now vehicle out of warranty. after vehicle is up to operating temperature and is shut off and remains for approximately half hour, upon restarting, vehicle tumbles. i contacted chevrolet customer service who provided me with an extended warranty on the engine and they have washed there hands of any other problems they may occur. my complaint is the rough idle has always been present, and now the tumbling is being caused as a result of the prior problem. this vehicle has been in service numerous times and the problem has not been diagnosed by chevrolet. do any service bulletins exist for a similar problem as this? file #1-89542103 & 1-89542103. automatic transmission was another issue that was addressed while under warranty. now, tcc valve is sticking causing a delayed gear engagement. again, sorry but your vehicle is out of warranty. *la

Well first off 1: vibrations at speeds of 40+ the front end feels like it going to fall apart the sterring wheel shakes violently when slowing as the the vibrating is going on, you have to come to a complete stop and put it park and then proceed and it might go away, it's like the driveline or shaft gets out of balance, and the brake barley work its like they are fighting against you putting pressure on them. #2: when you hit a bump with brakes applied the peddal starts pumping back and forth and you can barely stop. #3: front left suspension squeaks and rattles when making a right or left turn its like your shifting the weight and something is looose. #4: transmission clunks when putting into gear from park or into reverse almost as if a u-joint was bad but noise comes from tranny and driveshaft. and when coming to a stop you can feel the tranny down shifting like its just dropping out of gear the whole truck rocks. well chevy need to do something before someone dies,, after reading the previous complaints i thought i just had a lemon but i see i'm not alone i took the trk to the dealer for the vibration and was told no problem existed but the vibration went away for awhile do they know something and just are told be quiet. help me i should have got ford

The automatic transmission intermittently fails to engage on launch. there is a delay of 1 to 2 seconds before the transmission engages and the vehicle moves. the failed condition appears as if the vehicle is in nuetral and then slams into gear. the failed condition may be that the vehicle is actually trying to launch in 3rd and then down shifts after a delay. this is a potentialy dangerous condition that could result in an accident while crossing traffic or entering traffic. i have found via the internet that many owners of this vehicle are having this problem with both 1999 and 2000 models. this problem is very intermittent and can not be reproduced with regularity. because the problem can not be reproduced i have not taken the vehicle to the dealer, it would be a waste of time at this point. the dealer will not be able to reproduce the failure. i have experienced the problem 3 times in 3 months and 3000 miles. it is impossible for vehicle owners to get gm to do anything because the problem is so intermittent. gm has to be aware of the problem from what i have seen on the internet. please let me know if i can help in any way with your investigation. thank you in advance for your help.

Drivetrain clunk or thunk as the dealer called it. i have a 2000 chevy silverado z71 4x4 truck. i noticed the clunking about 2 weeks after owning the truck. the dealer replaced the yoke but the problem still persisted. the tech acknowledged the problem but said it was normal for a 4-wheel drive. that is wrong, i have talked to many people that have 4x4 trucks and they do not have this sound when stopping and starting. i have talked with people that own 1999-2001 chevy's and most of them have this clunking. my motor also knocks when it is started. the dealer tech said as long as the knock stops in a given time, that is also normal. in cold weather it knocks right up to the time limit, so nothing can be done about it. if you try to drive it shortly after this time, the condition is worse. again, the tech said that is normal. this is the same on the 1999-2001 trucks. this is outrageous for a $30,000 vehicle to have these types of problems. i am afraid there will be failures after the warranty period is up. there is a bulletin from chevrolet that says these things are normal so i am assuming any chevy dealer will say the same thing.*ak

We've had drivetrain vibration trouble with our truck since it was almost new. it has been in the service dept. several times for this problem. the dealership has replaced different items without fixing the problems. the dealership has reduced some of the vibrations. the vibration gets bad enough that the dome light cover has fallen off due to vibrations. from what we've researched g.m. has had problems with the '99,2000 &2001 silverado trucks and have been unable to fix the problems. the last visit to the service dept., we were told that yes there is vibration with our truck, but it's within gm specs and they can't or won't do anything else with it. we now have a problem when shifting from reverse to drive with our foot on the brake the truck sometimes jumps foward. we are going through arbitration with the better business bureau and speaking with the gm rep. about these problems, he felt that these problems were not safety related. i told him that if a truck jumps foward with the brake on is a safety problem. i told him the vibration problem was a safety issue also due to the stress put on vibrating parts in the short or long run. the gm rep. is acting like we have the only truck with this problem, which is not the case. there is not enough room here to tell more about these problems and were more then happy to discuss these problems.

I was driving home one night in my 2000 z71 when i noticed a banging sound coming from the rear. i thought it was the air compressor in the bed of the truck moving around. when i determined that was not the source of the sound, i took the truck to a friends garage where we lifted the rear and removed the rear-end housing cover. upon inspection of the differential we noticed that the retention bolt had broken and the cross pin fell out. this in turn caused the spider gears to explode. i purchased and installed a new differential, $500.00. i still have a ticking noise coming from the rear. i believe that is due to a missing tooth on the pinion gear caused by the cross pin. now i have to order a new ring and pinion gear set, $300. 74,000 miles. 14,000 over warranty. i found out that this is a fairly common problem in these z71's. *nm

I am writing to seek some assistance with an inferior product produced by gm. i have a chevy 2000 silverado z71 pick up that has piston slap starting at around 15k miles and progressively worsened which the dealer states is normal wear. this expensive vehicle also has a rear end bang into drive and then reverse again the dealer states is normal. recently i fixed a snapped cable for the drivers window which the same kind of cable was recalled for the tail gate cables. i have replaced recall items for the tail gate cables, drive shaft yolk and the abs sensors to which it is still not functioning properly. all of which when presented to the dealer and the response was it is normal, until the recall occurred. it seems the policy of a company which creates an inferior product is to state, it is normal to the consumer until the government steps when enough people complain and makes the dealer own up to the problems with the products and finally treats the consumer with more compassion, and to some degree decency. with the many problems with this vehicle the government needs to step in and help the consumer with the dealership resistance to fix the problems caused by more concern for profit than quality. *nm
