Defect Summary | On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. if both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper.
Consequence Summary | Anyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. on vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will replace the cables. interim owner notification began on april 7, 20004. the recall began on september 24, 2004, when replacement parts were available, and will continue through october 29, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.

Was driving my 2000 1500 and had brake failure. upon inspection not only did i find extensive rust on lines but my rear shackles are rotting through and some places on the frame. started to think there no way this should not be happening to this truck. only 140000 miles this has got to be a case of poor quality. not only is this a safety issue and should be checked on but it is an expensive fix. i did slide off the road but i came to a safe stop in a field luckily my e-brake worked and noody else was around. could you please investigate this and take care of it. chevrolet should stand by their product but they don't care about us, they just want their money. also there is a lot of rust on body of truck, like actual holes in bedside and passenger side rocker panel is bad. thank you for your time and consideration ,sincerely chevy truck owner:(

The fourth door would not close when the weather turned colder, they had me wait two weeks for an appointment. we took it in and the dealer adjusted the latches and lubed them. the problem returned in january and the dealer ordered new latches and upon returning two weeks later, they were installed. by the beginning of february, the problem was back. this time the dealer adjusted the striker to lesson the wind noise. on february 23, 2001, the dealer replaced the weather strip in the doors for the windnoise and shutting issue. on march 6, 2001, the dealer once again adjuisted the inner latch in hopes the door would close properly and ordered more new weather strip. there are two other visits we have made to the dealer for which we were not given a copy of the work order. our last visit to the dealer was on july 24, 2001. at that time they wanted to replce the inner door seal and and repair all the scratches they have put in the paint. from not shutting correctly, the upper rear corner of the driver's door bent out and put a crease in the door. the driver's door is higher than the fourth door and sticks out when shut. we have had wind noise and water leakage at any given time. the dealer, without our permission, bent the upper corner back down and used a pry bar to bend the welded on hinges. our truck has never been in an accident, but loking at you would think it has! we feel there is a safety issue here as the doors do not always latch properly and the hinges being bent has altered the integrity of the vehicle's safety. thank you aaron & lois bedford. *ak

My brakes failed, i replaced my brakes and i was never informed by general motors that there was a recall. 8/22/02: replaced front disc pads, replaced front brake rotors, cleaned caliper slides and hardware, replaced rear disc pads, replaced rear brake rotors, cleaned caliper slides and hardware on back also. also replaced left rear emergency brake band/cable and hardware. 8/21/03: replaced tailgate handle. 7/5/05: replaced tailgate cable because it had broke in half. 7/13/05: replace u-joints. 11/1/05: had transmission serviced-filter and flush and was told that the transfer case select module needs to be replaced. while at the dealer getting the air bag adjusted we asked the dealer if there was a recall on the tailgate cable, as ours was busted, we were informed that there was a dealer recall, but our truck was not one of those recalled so we had to pay for the cable ourselves at a cost of $16.22. until we went in for the air bag recall we had never been informed about any recalls. we were just informed about the abs recall and we informed gm that we had replaced the recalled parts and were offered $60.00 for what cost us $826.60. this goes along with my other complaint, #10142457. *jb

In regard to the gm tailgate investigation i experienced a failure in the cable on the left side, 2000 2500 silverado. there was a minor abrasion to the plastic coating approximately midway between the anchor points. road salt appears to have penetrated to the wires that comprised the cable and corroded them to the failure point. cable broke while loading a lawn tractor <> 700 pounds. no other damage, no injuries, right side cable held the load after left side failure. no indication of problem prior to breakage. incident date is estimated. thanks . *ak

The tailgate support cable (on one side only) snapped while i was attempting to get out of the pickup bed after installing a tonneau cover. luckily, only one snapped; otherwise, i would have had considerable damage to my tailgate as well. although the truck is a 2000 model, it has been garaged 80% of it's life. c'mon gm, spend the extra $2.00 and give us some real cables.*ak

This is additional information related to a preliminary investigation (pe03-049). own a 2000 chevrolet silverado 2500. at approximately 25k miles, both tailgate straps broke; the rubber case over the cables allowed water in, and the cables rusted. both cables were replaced under warranty at that time. at approximately 52k miles, one of the new cables broke; expecting that the other one would fail soon, i bought two new cables. fortunately, no one was injured when both cables broke the first time. from now on, i intend to replace both when even a single cable breaks. i don't believe the cables should break so frequently. if they were made of galvanized steel or stainless steel they would fare better.*ak

I was unloading a snow blower in a crate (about 300 lbs) from the back of my truck when both cables holding the gate snapped. now i wasn't on it so it was just the blower when they snapped and i was able to catch my step on the ground. if i had been on the tail gate when this happened i could have gotten injured. both cables had rusted on the inside of the plastic case that they are in and you could not have seen it from the outside. this to me is a very unsafe condition. *la

Ltr fm audrey wissinger (pa) concerned about the problems she experienced with her 2000 chevrolet silverado pickup truck.*mr both front/rear rotors had to be replaced. the old brake linings were replaced with new ones. the rotors were literally falling apart-inferior metal. dealer stated this was the result of the vehicle not being driven enough. there was a terrible kluncking sound in the rear end or drive shaft. this happened in a downshift or upshift. the dealer stated it was normal play in the drivetrain. all four wheels had to be replaced at 6000 miles because they were rusted. tailgate strap broke at 17000 miles. when the 4-wheel drive was engaged, it made a terrible growling that didn't seem normal. *ph *jb
