During the pe, odidiscovered that one or both of the tailgate support cables can break due to the effects of metal fatigue at the point where the cable flexes when the lift gate is opened and closed. concurrently, the strength of the cable degrades over time due to corrosion of the wire strands in the support cables.when the vehicle is stationary and cargo is being loaded or unloaded, the tailgate can tip downward displacing cargo and/or people to the ground without warning.odi is also aware of one total separation of the tailgate from the vehicle.owners cannot easily detect whether the support cabes are damaged or corroded because they are covered by a protective sheath.odi is upgrading this preliminary evaluation for further appropriate action.model year 2003 vehicles will be added to the investigation.further, we will incude additional vehicles, those being the avalanche and cadillac ext, model years 2002-2003, and the sierra, model years 1999-2003.

I was driving nomally, down my driveway, at approximately 3 mph, and my spare tire detached and fell off the undercarriage of my truck while the vehicle was in motion. the cable holding the tire in place broke. nothing has been done to correct this problem. my spare tire is no longer able to be attached to my vehicle. if this happened on a highway, someone could have been killed.

Both tailgate cable of 2001 chevy silverado snapped while off-loading rubbish into county rubbish dump trailer. incident gave me a good scare and could have been really bad if i did not regain my balance and fell 10' into the trailer full of dangerous objects. no substantial damage to the tailgate as it made contact with the bumper. upon closer look at the cables, it appears that only a few strands (and the vinyl sheathing) were keeping the cable together. the rest of the strands showed severe corrosion. took the cable to local dealer but they would not even look at it but did say that it's out of warranty. the truck was purchased 3 years and 3 months ago. i had to pay $45 for the pair. i believe the cables should be good for the life of the truck under normal use. *jb
