The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

I was driving my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 through a parking lot and another vehicle backed out without looking. i hit my brakes to stop and i heard a little pop and my pedal went to the floor. luckily i hit the parking brake which stopped me which kept me from hitting the car that pulled out in front of me. i drove my vehicle home using the parking brake to stop when needed. after locating the leak, i noticed all the lines were so badly corroded, i'm going to have to replace all lines to get the right one. i have to take it to a shop because each line has to be bent in specific spots. why gm doesn't sell pre bent lines is unbelievable. this is an expensive job costing me @ $950 which is absurd. i could do it myself if i was able to get the actual parts needed. i guess gm will still find a way to get more money from you even after you buy one of their over priced vehicles...! terrible shame.. *tr

While waiting in line at hardees drive thru, the brake pedal went all the wall to the floor.upon inspecting the truck i found all of the brake lines underneath had rusted and one from the master cylinder had rusted all the way thru.i replaced this line with a carbon coated steel that cost only $8.99. however i do feel pretty fortunate because we were headed upon a mountain going deer hunting. i really don't want to think about what could have happened if we were comin off high knob and this line had blown. i also think gm is very lucky that someone hasn't gotten seriousy hurt or killed yet but i think it is only a matter of time unless they recall these vehicles and replace all the brake lines with a better grade of steel or a coated steel to protect them from corrosion. also i read some of gm response to this issue and i would like to reply to them that once a line is blown being front or back the pedal goes to the floor and once the fluid is gone you have nothing but the park brake, if you can actually think about it during all the panic of pumpin the brake pedal trying to get a vehicle to stop. this really is a dangerous problem and these vehicles need to be recalled and all the brake lines replaced.

Was under the truck few days ago and noticed the brake line to the rear of the truck is seriously corroded, upon further inspection of brake lines, noticed that almost all the steel brake lines on the pickup are seriously corroded and a few under the cab connecting to the abs module are beginning to leak, this is a serious safety concern and will not drive the truck till i have the time and money to replace them, have not been able to find a replacement part number for them from gm, however classic tube industries makes a stainless steel set that i will be purchasing when the funds allow, till that happens the pickup will not leave the driveway as it is an accident waiting to happen, other then the brake lines i also found the entire chassis to be rusted badly for a 10 year old vehicle!! *tr

I am not sure of the exact date of the first incident. can report if necessary. on saturday, august 11, 2012, after a stop at the end of my driveway, i proceeded across the street and stopped again at my parents driveway to pick up their mail. upon climbing the hill of their driveway, i attempted to stop in front of their garage when my brake lines ruptured and i lost all braking power. thankfully, i was able to put the truck in park before hitting the garage door. i had my mechanic tow the truck to his shop and he said it would cost a couple thousand dollars because he needs to lift the cab off the frame to replace the lines. last year, i had to replace all of the caliper, rotors, pads, parking brake pads and backing plate and all of the rear brake lines which were severely corroded. i have less than 33000 miles on this vehicle which i bought new. the total cost of those repairs was 2800. add the 2000 or so for this repair and it comes to almost 5000. i feel there should be some relief from gm due to the unusual wear and corrosion and the low mileage. please advise me of any necessary steps to resolve this issue. *tr

Slowing down to park, pushed brakes, pedal went to the floor. barely stopped before pinning someone between my vehicle and another truck. rear brake line burst below driver seat, brake fluid puddle under truck. upon inspection, all 4 brake lines running along the frame totally rusted, about to burst. need to replace all lines on whole truck. on the flatbed towtruck, noticed the driver rear leaf spring where it wraps around the bushing was missing the top half. this is where force is transmitted from axle to frame (back is a hanger / pivot). the whole rear axle could have torn off. noticed where it had cracked and had rusted 1/2 through before falling off, likely sometime recently. *tr

I started noticing in march of this year that sometimes my antilock brakes kicked in when there was no apparrent reason for them to do so. first it was maybe once a week and then it got to be everyday. i took my truck to the dealer where it was purchased, applegate chevrolet, and they seemed to know right away what was wrong. my anti-lock brake sensors were corroted. $300 later it was fixed. three of the sensors they were able to clean, one broke. i have the broken one that had to be totally replaced.

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado. the abs system fails to stop my vehicle in all types of normal situations which has already led to one accident. this was my first accident ever and thanks to my dealer who said there was no problem with my brakes i am sure this wont be the last accident. the vehicle brake system will freeze up if so much as a pebble vibration is felt, or stopping on a completely smooth and clean road normally. the scary thing is, i never know when my brakes are going to fail, and since there is no difference in between a smooth road or a pothole disabling the brakes i do not feel comfortable in my own vehicle. i have rolled through intersections, rolled through stop signs, and had one accident in this vehicle. i beleive that the chevrolet company needs to correct this problem immediatly, for the liability and safty of all consumers. i am not the only person with brake problems in the chevrolet silverados from 1999 to current, i have met several and they were all told they have no probelms with there vehicles either. we are waitng for chevrolet to correct this faulty brake system. *ak

When slowing down to stop, the anti-lock brakes take over and the vehicle will slide or become unable to be stopped. on more than one occasion, i have nearly hit someone or a parked vehicle, as i am unable to control the braking mechanism of my vehicle. it is only a matter of time before i cause an accident or become involved in an accident due to this problem. at this time, there does not appear to be a formal recall, but only an investigation. on a daily basis, i transport my family, and fear that i will have an auto accident that may cause them or someone else harm. i am looking into having the sensors replaced, and awaiting an estimate to do so. i would appreciate anything that could be done to rectify, what i and many others feel is a vehicle defect.

When i press the brake to stop the vechile at unpredictable times the abs kicks in and the truck does not stop. it has casued several close calls and 1 smack into a garage door. i took to my mechanic and he said this was a common problem on this truck and it was the wheel speed sensors. this truck has only 24,000 miles on it but is out of warr due to age. dealer wants $400 to fix, but it appears based on my mechanic and reports read on internet this is a big problem and gm should do something about it.

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 extended cab, currently the abs breaks are going into abs mode when i try to stop on any surface including dry at low speeds (under 10mph). this is causing my breaking distance at low speeds to increase as to correct the problem i have to let off the breaks and then mash them. exactly the behaviour that abs is supposed to negate. i haven't done anything to correct the issue yet but since it seems to be getting worse, will pull the abs fuse to disable that function.
08/20/200438000111/01/2001
On a couple of previous occasions, the abs system in my 2002 chevy silverado 4x4 extended cab engaged on me at while braking at stop lights on my way to work. this caused my braking distance to double or even triple on hill stops. i was very upset at these faliures in the braking system and immediately took it to the closest service station to be looked at. because they were not a gm service center, they had no knowledge of this known problem with the abs speed sensors in the silverado's so there was nothing they could do to fix this. i then set out to my chevy dealership after work to get this looked at. on my trip to forest city chevrolet in portland, maine i was exiting the highway and making my way down the twisting offramp to the stop light when i applied the brakes, the abs system kicked in at about 20 mph! (not the 5 to 10 mph as officially suggested by gm) i did everthing in my power and reach to stop the vehicle before crashing into stopped traffic ahead of me including applying the parking brake. this was the scariest moment in my 14 years of driving. i immediately pulled the abs system fuse to disable this disaster of a braking system and continued to the dealership. from there i was charged 70 dollars for a diagnoses of faulty abs speed sensors and another 400+ dollars to replace them. what really hurts me is that they have known technical bulletins about this known dangerous problem and do not notify the owners like myself to warn us of possible brake failure!! then to charge me almost 500 dollars to fix the problem although my vehicle was barely 2000 miles out of warranty!! and they had a ton of these speed sensors in stock so whatever gm is claiming this issue as being extremely widespread is false, it is happening a lot. i was so frightened that this would happen to me again, i traded in my truck.

1.i own a 2002 chevy silverado. the antilock brakes were coming on when i would come to a slow stop or the end of a stop. most of the time they would just grind but a couple of times the brakes failed. 2. the first time they failed i ran into my garage door and just dented it a little. the second time i was in a parking lot and smashed into a parked car. i did do a police report on that one. through the fenton police department (2005-001636). 3. i took the truck to the dealer who told me the antilock brake sensor had corrosion on it and was cleaned for $250 bucks. that is all they did.
02/22/20056200010/16/2004
The abs system on chevy trucks can create an unsafe operating condition. during a slow stop, below 5mph, the abs activates and does not allow the vehicle to stop. especially dangerous when stopping in parking lots where people may be in front of the vehicle. the fault is caused by either 1) failure of whell speed sensor or 2) rust build up on the wheel speed sensor mounting. there are no warnings from the vehicle when the fault will occcur or does occur. thus, there is not way to adequaltely predict when to service the system and avoid the potential fault. it is a common problem. i know this by visiting the chevytruck.com forums where many people are discussing the issue. many people have reported near disasters due to the issue. in my opinion, there is a high probability of someone being seriously injured or killed due to this failure. if you replace the defective wheel speed sensor or clean te mounting flange, you may resolve the short term problem. my issue is with the design because if you correct the problem, you have no warning device to inform you when the fault will reinitiate. you only learn of the fault when it actually happens. by then you could have seriously injurred or killed someone. i have reported this problem to chevrolet customer service on 2-25-05. it is a problem on both of my chevy trucks. a 99 suburban and a 2002 silverado. both have approximately 65,000 miles.

Brake lines rusted through.... truck was not used hard, undercarriage more than once was washed to try to remove salt corrosion . it just seems such an expensive truck should not have such early and severe brake line failures from normal operation. the lines must not be made from rust resistant metal and poorly protected from the road elements. in a discussion with other chev truck owners from this area, it seems there have been similar failures.

Hit a shopping cart stand at a shopping center because as i was turning into the parking spot and applying the brakes so control the vehicle speed the anti lock braking violently pulsed the brakes and not slowing the vehicle down.although i tightened the turn i still made contact with the upper rail causing damage to the parking light before coming to a complete stop. had the brakes functioned properly the vehicle would have not been damaged. because of the low speed, no other damage occurred, just broke the plastic.

Rear brake line failed due to corrosion at bracket just above rear end , after replacing that line a second line failed 12 inches in front of abs controller below driver compartment, this was also due to corrosion. when the failure occurred the truck was nearly unstoppable, i had to swerve off the road into the ditch to avoid a left turning vehicle.

Ii was driving along and came to a right hand turn and when i hit the brake, the pedal hit the floor so i missed my turn. had there been a car in front of me i would have hit them for sure . so i had to take a high speed turn and ran off the road to make the turn so i had no brakes at al. i had no brakes on the front and one rear ebrake backing plate rotted off my truck back in 2007. i have always owned gm trucks and this one is a big let down and it all most killed me. if i had to guess the date was sometime in june of this year.

Started truck, brake pedal went to floor. brake fluid under truck. brake lines rotted out under drivers door between master cylinder and abs box. had to use parking brake to stop vehicle. luckily my children were not playing in the driveway, or that i was not on the highway. huge safety issue, and from hundreds of complaints on internet this is a design flaw, not a fluke, or environmental issue. i had inspected at dealer a year ago and they said lines were fine. this was after spending $2000 to replace other rusted brake components. brakes had been replaced at 20,000 miles also. truck has been used on highway miles mostly, and has never plowed, or towed, or been used near water.

When coming to a complete stop while parking i noticed that the brake pedal went completely to the floor. i parked and got out of my vehicle and looked under the vehicle and noticed brake fluid coming out of the rear driver side. the brake line was completely rusted through. i had the line replaced but the other lines are also looking rusted. i do not use my vehicle off road or long distance driving, just around town. this is a serious issue with the safety of the vechicle.

Vehicle is currently at the bayside cheverolet dealer in prince frederick, md. sorry, i don't know the exact mileage but is approx. 156,000. i was at an enterprise rental car facility helping my daughter pickup her rental car. i had to put the car in my name since she is under 21. so my daughter went into my truck to drive it home (2002 chevy silverado 1500 4x4). when she pushed the brake and put it in reverse, the brake pedal went to the floor. i walked over to the vehicle when she called me over and noticed lots of brake fluid on the ground near the driver side door. a tow truck was called and it was towed to the dealer mentioned above where it is now. i briefly looked under the truck and noticed severe corrosion on the brake lines and brake fluid all over the under-side. the dealer called me and said all the brake lines need to be replaced. they asked me do you go off-road?, i said no. then they asked did you run over any large objects?, i said no. then she said maybe rodents?; ok, lets not get rediculous, i thought. the estimate is $1,300. i asked them to not do repairs until my insurance inspector can document the damage for a claim i submitted. the inspector is supposed to show at the dealer sometime september 6th, 2011. state farm claim# 20038n172.

Brake line erupted leaving me in an unsafe situation with no warning and putting me at risk. i went to apply the brakes entering a controlled intersection and my brake pedal felt different as it went all the way to the floor and barely stopped my 2002 2500hd chevrolet silveraldo crew cab truck. pumping the brakes had no positive effect on stopping my vehicle. brake warning light did not display after brake line failure. no brakes and no brake warning indicator. there is property damage to my truck and my house due to this brake line failure.

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado, brakes went out, brake lines are rusty, and burst on one of the lines, i see nhtsa probes 1999-2003 gm trucks for possible rusted brake lines back in march of 2010 what became of it? this is a very dangerous problem, this vehicle is used to tow and had that been the case when the brakes went out someone could have been hurt and or killed. this is not the only rusty brake line i have seen i also have a 2000 chevrolet impala that had the same problem, as my wife was driving to work she had to stop for a school bus, when she went to stop was unable thank god the children did not have to cross the road way to load on the bus. we were also lucky the lines burst on the silverado in the driveway, and it was very lucky it did not happen the week prior, i was towing with it. there needs to be a recall on this issue and it needs to been done right away before some one gets killed. please look into other gm products thanks ken gill

2002 chevrolet silverado - 2nd brake line failure in past 6 months. avoided accident by pulling into parking lot. all brake lines extremely corroded. you currently have an investigation into this problem - here is another case. all brake lines need to be replaced. according to dealer, they have no service bulletins on this, and it will cost thousands of dollars. this is a pickup with 40k miles on it. my wife could have been seriously injured by the total loss of brakes she experienced. this problem warrants an immediate recall!

In december of 2005 i brought my 2002 silverado to the dealer for a recall on abs sensors. i was contacted and told i needed brake rotors and pads on all four wheels. i asked them how a truck with only 10,200 miles that had been garaged since purchase could require $900 worth of brakes. first i was told it was due to inactivity. after explaining i have a 1976 gmc ck10 parked beside the silverado and it did not require such repair, i was told new brake materials are inferior to the older brake materials. i suspect there may be faulty materials used in gmc truck brakes circa 2002 and seek you advice on the matter. thank you. *nm

Many of the problems took several times in the shop to fix. the castrophic failures in the engine & transmission have never been fixed. the truck has lunging, dead spots & surges & the transmission clunks (shifts hard, jerky) the auto may or may not accelerate on demand & will later accelerate when you need to apply the brakes.

The brake line that runs to the rear left wheel was installed incorrectly causing it to contact the turn down seam of the cab sheetmetal. this was located just behind the fuel cooler. the rubbing caused the line to burst while stopping. the dealer service rep said that since the truck was 10k over the warranty that it would be unlikely that the gm would fix the problem. since i didn't have the time to fight with the dealer and since i use the truck in the course of my business i had it repaired by local mechanic.

The power steering & power brakes went out simultaneously. fortunately i was only towing the boat trailer(2000 lbs) i had just unloaded a 5000 lb boat the date was 7 july. no one was injured and nothing was damaged. however upon checking around this apparently is a common problem on this gm platform. the dealership knew what was wrong before they saw the vehicle and admit to servicing this problem. my issue is how many people need to be injured or killed before someone recalls these. i just found out that the shaft which is breaking has been replaced with a new part but there are thousands of these things out there and no warning has been issued. my local dealership. they have replaced 6 of these in the last 2 weeks. the dealership in cheboygan has replaced 5 in the recent past for a total of 11 in two dealerships.

At low speeds, (below 10 mph) the antilock braking system will engage (pulsing of brake pedal) on my 2002 1500 silverado and make stopping distances dramatically greater in slippery conditions, even if only one wheel is on a patch of ice/snow. this leads to scary situations at stop signs/semiphores. i contacted gm, and they advised me that i live in a state (mn) that is not covered by the recall. i was advised that if the vehicle was repaired at a dealership, i may be eligible for reimbursement on a case-by-case basis. for now, i have removed the abs fuse to disable the abs system. i realize that the abs will not work at all, but at least i my stopping power will be predictable. *nm

Cold engine start-up knock. i own a 2002 silverado z71 with the 4.8 engine. the engine has had cold start-up knock since i have owned it. i have asked dealers about it and have been told it is normal. i build engines for and own to drag cars. one is an et footbrake car with a mild 350 ci small block chevy. the other is a 48 fiat altered with a 434 ci small block chevy stroker. both have forged pistons and neither has the cold piston noise that this bone stock 4.8 has. i currently have 39,139 miles on my truck and want it to last as long as possible. under the current circumstances, i don't think it will last much longer before it cracks a piston skirt or severely damages the cylinder walls. it is my intention to contact chevrolet in the next couple of days but after reading the complaints on this site, i am prepared to be told the same as the dealer told me. i am also looking into the class action suit approach to get a remedie to the problem. another issue is the brakes. the truck has 4 wheel disk and stops like it has four wheel drums without power?? i owned a 97 sivlverado that had brakes that worked the same. you would think that a truck that cost 30,000 dollars would be a little better constructed. *nm

The county in which we live receives over 100+ inches of snow on average. the states that surround us, west virginia and pennsylvania, are considered by your definition to be in the rust belt our state and county road crews use a lot of salt and chemicals on the roads in the winter due to the high amount of snow that we receive each year. for this reason we feel that you should consider this area in the coverage zone for the safety recall of the front wheel speed sensor corrosion. the silverado would make noises, vibrate and would feel like it was not going to stop in the necessary and appropriate distance at low speeds. the brakes felt mushy and would vibrate when coming to a stop. at first it only happened infrequently, but then began to happen all the time. the silverado was taken to the local dealership to be serviced and the technician tested both the left and right front sensors. the technician then tried to remove and clean the above mentioned parts, which could not be done. the result was that a new hub assembly on both sides was installed . after this repair was completed, both the right and left sides were retested and found to be working ok. there have been no problem since this repair was completed. the old parts are available for inspection if needed. *nm

In the early hours of monday august 29, upon arriving home, we were pulling into our driveway at about 10 miles per hour in our 2002 chevrolet silverado, the anti-lock brakes engaged and we had difficulty coming to a stop and almost hit our garage door. on tuesday august 30th , my husband was pulling into a parking space at work going approx 5-10 miles per hour and the anti-lock brakes engaged, causing him not to be able to stop and hitting another persons car across from him in a parking space. in talking to a co-worker about what the anti-lock brakes were doing she directed me to this website to check if there were any recalls. on august 29th, there was a recall notice issued about this very problem. we called our local dealership, cody chevrolet in montpelier, vt. they told us to pull the fuse on the anti-lock brakes until we could bring in the truck on thursday, sept 1 to have the problem corrected. the other person's car that was struck by our truck took their car to get an estimate, which came back at $688. i called gm to get them to pay for it. they keep saying they need to investigate this further. my concern is that rather than hitting a parked car, my husband could have hit a person. he could have been traveling downtown at a slow rate of speed, come to a person crossing a crosswalk, the anti-lock breaks could have engaged and he could have struck a person. gm has told me that the recall is not being released until there are enough parts available at which time it will be released to owners in january in vin # order. i feel that this could be a potential public safety hazard. i also feel gm has an obligation to pay the damage done to the other vehicle, especially since our local dealership fixed the problem at no cost to us based on the recall. *jb

In may of 2005 while approaching a stop light at slow speed, on dry pavement, the abs brakes, in my 2002 chevrolet silverado, activated causing the vehicle to require a greater than normal stopping distance. no accident occurred. the incident seemed isolated. then in june, the problem continued and became more and more frequent. when pulling into a parking space at a slow speed i was just barely able to come to a stop within the confines of the parking space. although no particular accident has occurred i strongly feel that this is a very unsafe and potentially dangerous problem. the vehicle has only 19,000 miles on it. the vehicle was brought to hadad chevrolet in pittsfield, ma where we were told it would cost between $270 and $920 to fix. we have called chevrolet to see if the manufacturer is responsible for fixing the problem but they had not even heard of the problem. the problem has not yet been corrected as we are investigated the manufacturer's responsibility and the most economical repair for our problem. *jb

Prior to the crash i'll describe, i noticed that the antilock brakes on my truck would engage randomly at low speeds, even though the road was clear and dry. i never received any indication from indicator lights or the truck's status display that there was a malfunction in progress. until the incident below, braking control always returned within a few seconds and seemed to pose no safety threat. on this particular evening, they had performed without incident all the way home from work. i pulled into my driveway and into my garage. upon entering the garage proper, the antilock brakes engaged. the garage floors (and driveway) were both clear of any snow, ice, or liquids. when the antilock brakes took control, it released the brakes and locked the brake pedal in such a way that i could not regain control. this time, i was unable to push the pedal down. my vehicle subsequently stuck the workbench along the back wall of my garage. the impact pushed the entire garage wall out almost 12 inches, including the cement block foundation. fortunately, there was no damage to the vehicle. however, the damage to the garage remains. to correct the failure, a mechanic at a local dealership removed the fuse that controls the antilock brake functions, essentially disabling the antilock system. due to the nature and location of the antilock sensors (in the wheel bearings), repairs are not financially feasible at this time. the truck's brakes function normally with the antilock system disabled. i believe that this complaint directly relates to nhtsa action number pe05020.

On june 17, 2005, i felt the brake pedal of my 2002 chevrolet silverado truck (vin 1gcec14w62z161405) pulsate when i came to a stop at the bottom of the exit ramp from i-75. this lasted for a couple of seconds, and the truck took a couple of extra feet to stop. i had a similar problem on my 1998 chevy lumina several months ago and the abs warning light came on. that problem cost over $ 500 to repair. the lumina had 49k miles, but the truck only has 18.5k miles. the only thing in common with these two vehicles is that i switch off on driving them, sometimes letting one or the other stay parked for a week or two, depending on what kind of work i am doing. this time, with the silverado, no abs or brake warning lights ever came on, so i assumed that the system had just detected some minor sliding of one of the wheels as i was coming to a stop, possibly from some loose gravel or rocks. later that day, i decided to stop at the local home depot, on my way home from work. when i pulled into a parking spot, i pushed on the brake pedal and could hear the abs pump (?) working very hard. the brake pedal would not move at all, and the brake system did not seem to be stopping any of the wheels. i only had a fraction of a second to react, so i threw the transmission into reverse. this stopped the forward motion of the truck, and i put it into park, before it could move any more. i ended up stopped about a foot from the rear bumper of the car in the space ahead of me. if a pedestrian had run out in front of me earlier, and i had been unable to stop, they might have been killed. through all this, none of the abs, brake, or check engine warning lights ever came on. i do not think that a vehicle with this low mileage should have such a potentially fatal problem, and the abs components should not corrode, as they did in the lumina, and possibly in the silverado, if the vehicle is not driven regularly. i am extremely fortunate that no one was injured or killed.

I am experiencing undesired application of the anti-lock brake system on my 2002 chevrolet silverado pick up truck due to faulty wheel hub speed sensors. it started out as a once in a while thing a couple months ago and is now an almost routine occurance on almost every braking. when the abs applies, the stopping distance is almost doubled. this occurs at speeds below 10mph, which is when you are usually closing the range on whatever you're trying to stop for. aside from having it checked over by a local chevrolet dealer, nothing has been done to correct the failure. the cost estimate has ranged from $300.00 up to over $1,000.00. i was told the problem was corrosion related due to being kept outside and driven on dirt roads, etc. the truck was purchased from my uncle who drove it on paved roads, kept it in a heated garage, and it has seen only occasional exposure to road salt. it is only in the last year that is has been parked outdoors on a regular basis. i have not done the repairs as i am going to persue it with gm to pay for them since this is a very common problem and is no way related to anything i've done, as well as being out of my budget if the cost becomes excessive.

Abs coming on at low speeds (under 10 mph) in dry conditions. this started in jan. 2005 when i bought the truck and continued until approx. late march. this did not cause any accidents but there were several close calls. i didn't take to the chevy dealer to get it looked at, but i did notice after i would wash the truck that the problem would be much better for a time then start up again.

This concerns the brake problem on gm trucks. my 2002 silverado's braking never was great, when hard braking is applied, the pedal will bottom out and you have to pump pedal to stop. now the abs system has failed and the pedal has locked up on me at least four times, nearly causing accidents. i had to pull abs fuse just to be able to drive it and be able to stop. the pedal would lock up so hard that i had to stomped it to break it free.

I own a 2002 chevy silverado. i read in the newspaper about an investigation into gm pickup truck antilock brakes. it described exactly what i have been experiencing since jan of 2005. at low speeds, usually in parking lots, my antilock brakes engage even though the road conditions are completely dry. the result is that my vehicle requires 2-5 feet more distance to come to a complete stop. i took my brakes apart to inspect them and clean them. i found nothing wrong and there was plenty of brake pad left. the rotors looked fine also. cleaning the brakes did not solve the problem. it has happened 100+ times since january. it is always at low speeds and the road conditions are just fine. none of the dashboard lights come on indicating a problem. a few months back i discussed the problem with a few coworkers and found that 2 of them were experiencing the same problem. one guy has a 1999 chevy pickup and the other guy has a chevy pickup but i am unsure of the model year of his. hope this helps.

2002 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton pickup...... anti-lock brakes malfunction.... had at least 6 instances where it seems that the brakes do not work as i attempt to slow down or come to a complete stop..... i am now in the habit of beginning to stop at least 100 feet shorter than what i should normally expect to.... most times it happens, it seems that the anti-lock feature takes over, when there should be absolutely no reason to do so (dry pavement and less than 15 mph)...needless to say, it is not a positive feeling to hope that the brakes are indeed going to work..... what i find aggravating is that i contacted 2 separate gm dealerships with this issue, one dealership said that the computer knows the necessary stopping distance (i asked if the computer can see the car in front of me which i am about to rear-end)......the other dealership said sorry, they all do that from time to time..... it is only after realizing that nhtsa is looking into complaints with braking on these vehicles that i want to make known that it is indeed more of a safety issue than what gm's corporate position is taking.... i feel that it is only a matter of time before my vehicle is one of those involved in a fender bender, or god forbid, i run over a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

I purchased a 2002 chevy silverado ext cab 4wd (z71) in october of 2003. the truck had 23000 (+) miles on the odometer when purchased. on december 13 of 2003 while on my way to work and traveling at a speed of approximately 30 mph in a 45 mph zone, traffic began coming to a stop at a traffic stop. when i tried to apply the brakes there was a loud grinding noise and i was unable to depress the brake pedal. as i continued to apply manimum pressure to the brake pedal the pedal suddenly went straight to the floor accompanied only by a loud vacuum sound. this brake failure resulted in a six car collision with four injuries. despite numerous similar complaints from other consumers, the manufacturer's representatives continue to claim that there is nothing wrong with the brake system and the problem does not require a recall - what a joke. are they waiting until someone is fatally injured?*ak

After 3 weeks of ownership we started experiencing several problems with the steering and braking of this vehicle. steering wheel would catch and make thumping noises as we turned right or left sharp turns (slowly). brakes are going to cause an accident sooner or later as the pedal goes completely to the floor and thumps loudly but does not slow the vehicle when you try to make a moderately sudden stop. we had our truck in for service after owning it for 3 weeks and the idiots at spitzer chevrolet tried to tell us it was the trailer hitch making all the noise.....what a joke

When coming to a complete stop on dry pavement under moderate to light braking, once the vehicle falls below about 3 mph (i.e., in the last few feet before a complete stop), a shudder is felt in the brake pedal lasting 1 to 1-1/2 seconds. the shuddering in the pedal is accompanied by a stuttering sound. the vehicle stops normally --so far -- except for the vibration and noise. this happens on 30%-50% of the stops; the rest of the time there is no noise and no shuddering in the brake pedal. dealer has tried twice to fix problem, but today was told by chevrolet tech rep that this condition is a normal characteristic of their traction control/abs system and will not authorize any further work by the dealer! i do not consider this a normal condition and am concerned about the potential for more catastrophic problems should this condition remain uncorrected.*ak

I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado hd 2500 which was purchased new in sept. 2002. the vehicle replaced a 1989 silverado 2500 which had 189,000 miles at the time of sale. never did i have a brake problem with that vehicle or any other. since the time of purchase, the brakes were very soft and the vehicle slow to stop. i attributed this to the weight of the vehicle. the antilock breaks, my first on a truck, seemed to activate more than i would expect. i regularly have the truck serviced at either the dealer or at a goodyear service center. it should be noted that either of these are quick to spot something that they can charge you to replace. the truck has slightly over 40,000 miles, almost all of which are under highway driving conditions. i commute 25 miles when i do drive it to work and that is primarily at non-rush hour times. all but the last mile is on the highway or on country roads. in other words, very little braking. at least half of the miles have been recorded on long highway trips. i rarely pull anything with the truck. rarely has the truck carried heavy loads. recently i noticed that the vehicle would vibrate violently when i applied the breaks. i took it to the dealer to have it checked. i was informed that all 4 rotors needed to be replaced for a cost of nearly $1,200 dollars. i have never even had to replace a pad on the brake system - the part that should wear out. the dealer and the manufacture just say that it is a maintenance item and deny a problem exists. my 10 year old car has 85,000 milesand just recently had the pads replaced and the rotors turned for the first time. in other words, this is not a driving habit related problem. as i look at consumer information on the internet, i find that i am not alone with this sort of problem. this is a factory defect that can cause death and or injury. i am currently afraid to drive the truck until something is done.

Dt: the contact states when coming to almost a complete stop the sensor that detects abs kicks in and vehicle just keeps going. this happens at low speeds of 5 mph or less. once the abs kicks in it almost seems like vehicle accelerates. he noticed this about 2 weeks ago. mechanic had him call the gm dealer , and they verified the problem. but because there was not a recall they could not do anything. also called the manufacturer, and they made an appointment to diagnose the problem and go from there. when the contact bought the truck it had 19,000 miles on it. at 21,000 there were brake problems. had new rotors/pads put on the back, resurfaced the front and put pads on the front. at 37,000 the contact was on a trip and the brakes starting clattering and screeching from the back. they told him the discs were so rusted they destroyed the brake pads, and he had to replace everything.*ak

Vehicle lost braking power due to excessive rust buildup on all four rotors. this situation is especially dangerous when the antilock system activates. the first time i thought i was going to run into the stopped vehicle in front of me then again when i ended up in the intersection. no accidents, but a close call. gm would not repair under warranty at 52,000 miles. i repaired the vehicle myself but am concerned that there are alot of other vehicles out there with the same problem. customer service since advised me that my vehicle is not part of any recall.

2002 chevy silverado z71 truck - bought new from mcclinton chevrolet parkersburg wv. the truck started with a clicking noise when put in reverse. took to machanic who stated that all 4 rotors were pitted and rusted and needed replaced. the truck has 54,000 miles. took to two different chevy dealerships the second finally diagnosed that the calipers were stuck and not allowing the pads to move when necessary. they stated that they have had numerous complaints about this problem and have found that the rotors are made of an inferior metal. the problem is not due to driving habits or environmental issues this is a manufacturer defect that if not caught early by the owner causes about $800.00 to replace the rotors, calipers, and brake pads. this needs to be looked into and chevrolet needs to cover this type of cost. loyal customers deserve better treatment from manufacturers. they have changed the brake system on the 2005. i guess that this tells us something. they know that there is a problem but don't want to be held responsible.*ak
