Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. if both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper.
Consequence SummaryAnyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. on vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the cables. interim owner notification began on april 7, 20004. the recall began on september 24, 2004, when replacement parts were available, and will continue through october 29, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.

On the 2002 silverado chevy pu truck, there is a plastic cover over a bar under the dash board, near the gas pedal. it is possible that the tip of the sole of a driver's shoe can get snagged on that piece of plastic with the effect that the driver's foot is held down of the gas pedal. one driver experienced that.

Complaint received via e-mail. we have a truck which we brought brand new and have had it back to the dealer for vibration ever since we bought it. they have done nothing, but balance at the tire. we have had brand new goodyear tires put on the truck, mounted, balanced, etc,. and it continued to vibrate. they said there was nothing wrong with it, yet it continued to vibrate between 40-50 mph. we recently found a service bulletin on the truck #3009. *ak the passenger door lock was falling off, the passenger side rear door was hard to shut and the driver door lock popped out. *sc

I had two inside door panel replaced already. these two things were fixed from the engine compartment, it gets worse when it is colder. fuel gauge is inaccurate and jumps around when truck is not in a moving gear. i am very upset about the last two, because chevy says the truck is working within normal chevy parameter. i have asked many mechanics and they say either one should be happening. the date below is an approximate time the last two started. i also have had it in twice for both of these problems. *jb

I received two new tailgate cable supports from a dealer in arcadia, florida this past winter. i installed them myself on my 2002 chevy c2500 hd crew cab pickup. i have reason to believe the new cables are not made from stainless steel as they are supposed to be. this is because a magnet will stick to the cables, just like to old ones. the dealer really had no answer other than the new cables were the ones they were installing on everyone's vehicle that responded to the recall. i know that 203 type stainless steel has a small amount of carbon and will attract a magnet slightly, but i still believe the new cables are the same as the old ones. thank you, gene faulconer. *jb

I recently purchased a 2002 chevrolet silverado, and about a month ago the rear tailgate suddenly fell down, and upon inspection, the cables on either side that hold the tailgate up were both broken. fortunately the vehicle was in my driveway and not motoring down the highway. i had the problem correctly at my repair service, where 2 new cables were installed. i saw an article in my local newspaper today {2/24/04} that alluded to a possible defect in the design or the mechanism itself. no injuries resulted from this mishap, but i wanted to report this to your bureau since obviously there have been more instances.*ak

I am the original owner of a 2002 chevy silverado. this past july i lowered the spare tire for the first time to clean off mud and discovered that there were four locations on the side wall of tire that were worn away. this was caused by the bed of the truck. the tire was secure and had the proper tire inflation. i check the pressure about 4-5 times a year while it is still secured under the truck. i contacted gm and was told to bring the tire to my local dealer. service manager saw the tire and stated he sees this all the time and believes it is a design flaw especially in the s-10 pick ups. he advised me not to use the tire. it is to dangerous. i purchased a new tire to replace the spare and now in the process of trying to get gm to repay that cost. they have denied all requests so far stating i did not rotate tires properly. in the service book there are 2 ways to rotate tires one includes the spare and the other does not. i did the one that showed the four tire rotation not five because the spare is a steel rim not aluminum like the other four drive wheels. i am lucky that i removed the spare during daylight hours just for cleaning and not at night when i had too. the damaged sidewall of tire is on the inside once on the truck and i would never had seen the damage had it been at night. i also pull a camper with this vehicle and the results of having the side wall blow out at highway speeds pulling a camper scared me. as i mentioned earlier, i have replaced the spare with new tire. but what will keep the damage from occurring again ? i guess i will have to keep moving the spare tire. gm should redesign the tire holder or provide some type of cushion between tire and bed of truck. i am sure that had i had a flat tire and used the spare earlier in the trucks life this would not have happened. i have the tire and can provide pictures upon request. please feel free to contact me at anytime. *jb
