Defect SummaryCertain trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans equipped with bosch hydro-boost brake assemblies, the hydraulic brake booster pressure accumulator may crack and separate from the hydro-boost assembly during normal operating conditions.
Consequence SummaryIf a separation occurred and the hood of the vehicle were open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. the presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. the loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort and a crash may occur without prior warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will test the hydro-boost assembly for functional operation of the two-function valve. if the hydro-boost assembly fails the test, dealers will replace the assembly free of charge. the recall began on march 23, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc trucks at 1-866-996-9463 and hummer at 1-800-732-5493.

I was driving and applied the brakes for a stoplight when i felt a sudden lack of resistance in the petal. no warning lights were activated at all. i pulled over and pumped the brakes a few times and no pressure was regained. i got out of the truck and noticed a puddle of brake fluid towards the rear. upon further inspection all od the brake lines were rusted badly and one had ruptured. no warning lights ever came on during the whole ordeal. the truck is under 8 years old and all of the brake lines need to be replaced. luckily i was not in traffic or traveling faster when this occurred. i have never seen more rust on a newer vehicle in my life. obviously the rust is beyond cosmetic and has proven to be a hazard.

I was driving south on i-95 on the new jersey turnpike and slowed due to traffic and brakes went to the floor. i pumped them several times and put on the emergency brake and luckily stopped before hitting anyone. i had my whole family in the car, wife, 4 kids as we were heading to maryland from connecticut to visit family for christmas. i pulled over and was able to stop again but the brakes never felt quite right again. i had warning list come on several times and had to keep adding brake fluid. when i inspected the leak it was under the drivers door right where the lines sit in their plastic hanger. i also noticed all the other lines were shot as well (as in rusted). this is my family car as i use it for work and every time we go out as a family as well as drive kids to school etc..... i am amazed at the corrosion level and am currently attempting to replace the line that is leaking, but just a small portion of it. after reading the complaints associated with this vehicle and brake line corrosion, i hope you do something! as thank goodness i am a careful and conscientious driver because if i was going any faster (faster than 35 mph on a 65 mph highway) i would have caused a crash. suffice to say we had to use relatives cars to travel and then carefully plan the trip home with lots of brake fluid and constant stopping to avoid holiday season traffic. not a good scenario! *tr

The problem addressed in your nhtsa action number: pe05020 for earlier model years of the same truck are occuring in my 2005 truck. this has led to near rear-end collisions. the brakes go into an anti-lock condition at slow speeds while braking, no matter what the weather or road conditions are. you should extend the model years covered in your earlier recall to include all thru 2005 models and perhaps beyond or issue a new recall based on this and similar complaints from consumers. obviously gm did not fix the problem in follow on versions of the silverado.

Upon attempting to back up from a parked position, an audible pop was heard by the vehicle operator and three bystanders. the vehicle then stopped motion after about five feet of travel as the right rear wheel was locked up. upon visual on-the-spot inspection by company mechanic, it was obvious the casting attached to the axle end which acts as the support for both the brake caliper and the parking brake had exploded with a large piece shooting onto the ground and other pieces jamming up in the drum part of the rotor assembly causing the lock-up. vehicle immovable, was flatbeded to the selling dealer. repair was made by replacing all affected components with new, and we were billed even though vehicle was well with-in its original warranty based on service managers assumption that we (the operators) had somehow contributed to the failure. telecom complaint to gm cust. assistance, (file no, 1-299810112) returned same results. it is our contention that this critical part failed of its own accord either through defect or design, and that we were extremely lucky that this happened in our parking lot and not on a highway at 55 mph. vehicle operator has lost confidence in the safety of this equipment without a valid explanation and corrective action to a permanent remedy. *nm

Entering freeway as truck merged on freeway. vehicle suddenly jerked to one side while turning steering wheel. after several people observed the vehicle we realized when you turned the steering wheel the brake locked up by themselves with no one touching them. if you turn the steering wheel the brakes apply very rapidly and / or lock up. i believe this to be extremely dangerous. we had tow truck pick up vehicle and deliver to chevrolet dealership. left vehicle at dealership and they said they would repair the vehicle and repair the damage done to the vehicle in the accident at no charge. i informed the dealership that i thought this was a extremely dangerous condition. they all agreed and said thy had never seen or heard of this problem before. when i went to talk to them after fixing the vehicle the service representive pulled me to the side and told me he thought this was a extremely dangerous condition and did not believe the vehicle was safe to drive. he also let me know that there is a tsb on this problem and chevrolet is aware of the problem (tsb document id 1686251) . after talking over this mater with several mechanics they all agreed this was a extremely dangerous problem and could easily cause injury and / or death. what is amazing is chevrolet is aware of the problem and from what i can see the ntsb is also aware of the problem and nothing has been done. if i was in a turn on a overpass and the brakes suddenly applied from turning the steering wheel i assume this would cause a very serious accident. please let me know the findings of your investigation as soon as possible due to the seriousness of the defect. *nm
