In response to an information request letter sent by the office of defects investigation(odi) during preliminary evaluation pe08-010, gm provided odi with 41 allegations of non-crash engine compartment fires including 16 allegations of fires originating with the ignition in the off position.one of the fires was determined to be caused by an arson event.odi has also received 5 reports, 4 of which are of duplicative of reports provided by gm, alleging non-crash engine compartment fires in the subject vehicles.in total, odi is aware of 41 non-crashengine compartment fires in the subject vehicles that are unrelated to arson.eight of the 41 fire allegations also allege property damage as a result of the fires.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea08-010) to further assess the scope, frequency, origin and cause of the alleged non-crash related engine compartment fires in the subject vehicles.

In a letter dated august 27, 2008, general motors corp. (gm) notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 08v-441) to address a safety relateddefect that can result in engine compartment fire in approximately 850,000 vehicles equipped with a heated windshield washer fluid option.the subject vehicles of this investigation comprise over three-quarters of the recall population. according to gm, a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the windshield washer fluid heater module may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. this may cause other electrical features to malfunction, create an odor or cause smoke and in rare cases it may cause a fire.as a remedy, gm dealers will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse. in addition to the subject vehicles, several other gm models with the heated windshield washer fluid option are included in recall 08v-441: my 2006-2008 buick lucerne (manufactured august 2005 through november 2007); my 2008 buick enclave (manufactured february 2007 through april 2007); my 2006-2008 cadillac dts (manufactured may 2007 through november 2007); my 2007-2008 saturn outlook (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007); and my 2007-2008 gmc acadia (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007) vehicles.gm is instructing owners to take their vehicle to a dealer for service if they experience symptoms of windshield washer heater module short circuits. gm's recall resolves the safety defect concerns pursued by this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

On dec. 23, 2011, i took my silverado into joe firment for an exhaust leak (which is an emissions problem), so i wanted it fixed immediately. they found nothing. on may 22, 2012 i took my silverado back to joe firment for the 3rd time for this same issue - exhaust leak. at that time they had found one broken bolt on the exhaust manifold (actually there were two broken bolts that i found personally upon further inspection). my warranty covered the manifold but had just expired on may 7, 2012. i asked that they honor my warranty since the problem has been there since 2011, but they failed to diagnose it. joe firment refused to honor my warranty. i researched this issue online and found that several other people have had this same issue with their gm product. this should be investigated as a possible class action suit. how many similar complaints are on record? this being an emissions issue will cause my vehicle to fail the emissions test required to renew my license plates. this needs to be corrected and should be covered under my original warranty since the problem began within the warranty period. the dealership should have diagnosed it on the first appointment for this issue. *tr

Exhaust manifold bolts broken on 6.0 liter engine, 2 on passenger side, 1 on driver side, causing exhaust leaks and service engine light. possible fire hazard as exhaust gases entering underhood enviroment, and definate emission problems as o2 sensors incorrectly sensing diluted exhaust after leak in system, possible fuel mileage affected..

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving in inclement weather conditions, water entered the air filter and caused the vehicle to decelerate to approximately 5 mph. the contact heard a loud rattling noise and the engine light illuminated on the instrument control panel. the vehicle stalled and then automatically restarted five minutes later. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that they would have to modify the entire intake system by removing the sensor from the filter to the engine. the service manager stated that he did not believe the modification would resolve the failure, but was obligated by the manufacturer to perform the repair. the vehicle is currently being repaired. the failure and current mileages were 16,000.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE - DIESEL

With the new epa regulations requiring the dpf on diesel engines there is a problem with gm trucks, where as when the truck goes into regeneration mode at low speeds, (ie heavy traffic) the fumes emitted are sucked back into the cab of the truck through the ventilation system. in my truck regeneration will happen each tank full of diesel (1-2 times per week). at high speeds this is not an issue. when the fumes are sucked back into the truck the occupants eyes will burn and you start to feel sleepy and or sick to your stomach. i have researched on-line in some of the forums and others are complaining that children will actually vomit from the smell in the cab. it seems there is a fix to this by chevy, however they are reluctant to correct the problem unless you make a large enough stink at the dealership level. i imagine because of the cost! it seems to me that an issue like this where fumes are being pulled into the vehicle is a safety problem that need to be addressed by an authority such as yourself. i cannot believe that these fumes are not going to eventually cause health issues, or even worst somebody falling asleep at the wheel and causing an accident. i just found out that there is a tsb from gm on this issue that i have been experiencing for over a year now but the dealerships don't tell you. i will be bringing my vehicle to the dealership next week and forcing this issue to get the part that needs to be fixed replaced. *tr

Exhaust fumes entering the vehicle when coming to a complete stop. i have been to the dealer twice and they have observed the smell, but have no idea where it is coming from. they are suspecting that it is the new diesel after burner causing the smell. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet silverado 2500. while driving 65 mph, the cab filled with exhaust fumes. the dealer acknowledged the failure; however, they were unable to determine the cause. the manufacturer stated that the failure was a characteristic of the vehicle. the dealer disagreed with the manufacturer. the contact installed a carbon monoxide detector inside the vehicle during the failure and it registered 970 ppm. as of november 15, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 900 and current mileage was 7,000. updated 01-11-08. *kb updated 12/12/07 *tr
