EA06016GENERAL MOTORS CORP.09/14/200611/09/2007CRANK POSITION SENSOR FAILURE - STALL07V521000
In a letter dated november 7, 2007, general motors (gm) reported to the office of defects investigation (odi) that it will conduct a safety recall (07v-521) to replace the crank position sensor (ckp) in approximately 12,000 model year (my) 2001 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra vehicles equipped with 8.1 liter engines manufactured on or before november 15, 2000.according to gm, the ckp can fail intermittently or permanently.a permanent ckp failure would result in an engine stall without restart.an intermittent ckp failure could cause the service engine soon light to illuminate, the vehicle to run rough or the engine to stall but allows restart.as a remedy, an improved ckp will be installed in the subject vehicles.the recall campaign will start in december 2007. during the preliminary evaluation (pe06-016), and this ea investigation, gm and odi independently conducted detailed reviews of certain field data to understand the nature and rate of subject vehicle stalling due to ckp failures.gm and odi reviewed gm's warranty claims for the ckp with the objective of ascertaining an estimate of those claims representing an engine stall while driving.the ckp warranty claims without verbatim text were the largest segment of warranty claims.using those claims, gm surveyed vehicle owners to gather additional information to determine if the claim was associated with a stall while driving event.based on the survey, gm estimated that approximately 49% of all warranty repairs for the ckp involved a stall while driving.odi

My vehice would stall out on me at any time for about 2 months it didn't matter what speed i was doing or where i was it would stall out so i would have to coast to the side of the road with no power steering and wait to crank the vehicle back up. then december 23 2008 i was on my way home and it completely stopped i couldn't get it to crank battery was completely dead and it was at night on a highway. i took it to every dealer ship and every mechanic and noone could tell me what was wrong with it. finally i looked online at recalls and found that there is a recall for the exact make and model of my vehicle but when i called gmc they told me that there was no recall for my vehicle so i went and paid out of my own pocket to fix this problem. this is a major problem that they have found but aren't doing anything about it for me i mean if they have the recall already for the same vehicle then why isn't my vehicle included?

Pickup truck stalls at high speed. engine dies, brakes and power steering loses complete power. this is a heavy duty truck (8.1l engine) and i was towing a trailer and loaded tractor down a steep hill. lucky to come out alive. dealer diagnosed as faulty crankcase position sensor. this apparently is a known problem with this truck/engine (nhtsa campaign id 07v521000) but apparently my vin is not part of recall. got news for nhtsa & gm: the problem has not been fixed and the extremely dangerous failure mode still exists. a truck with an 8.1l engine is more often than not towing something heavy (horses, trailer, boat, tractor, etc). stalling at any time and anywhere makes for an extremely dangerous condition. do a google search on the campaign id and you will see that this is not an isolated incident. extend the recall to later vin #'s and save some lives. *tr

2001 silverado hd 8.1l engine 51,009 miles. experiencing issues associated with nhtsa id # 07v521000. i have had it checked and the scanner shows a crankshaft position sensor failure. i took it to the dealer and was told that they will not fix it due to my vin number being outside the recalled groups. even though it is in the date range of the effected units. i did some research and found that my truck has the same exact part number of the item that is failing. this has caused me to almost be rear ended 3 times and several other times where it quits at highway speed or in an intersection and i loose good steering and braking control. the last time (last saturday) left me and my 2 children (4 and 7) walking in a snow storm with poor visibility and risking freezing temps and almost getting hit by other traffic. it will usually start again but then runs rough but sometimes i have to let it sit for an hour before it will start. vic canever chevrolet in fenton mi is the dealer that said that they will not honor the recall due to vin number not in their system as a recalled unit and the gm customer service hotline would not assist me either. *tr

The events leading up to the failure, this failure mode has happened five times, twice while pulling a 12,000 lbs. camper and three times during normal driving. the failure, the 8.1 l engine suddenly looses engine power and stalls and will not immediately restart. after a minute or two the engine has restarted and normal travel resumed. how often it occurs, since july 24th 2009 this failure has occurred on five occasions. . its consequences, there have been no crashes but several near misses have been associated with the failures. the day of september 17th 2009 had two failures. the first occurred while traveling along divided state route at 65 mph when the engine suddenly stalled but i was able to pull out of traffic and restart the engine after the cool down period. there were no ses indicators being shown. the second engine failure occurred on my way home. i was a traveling along state route 35 which is a divided highway but has a great deal of traffic on it. this highway also has several stop lights in the area of beavercreek ohio. i had stopped at a red light and when i started to accelerate the engine suddenly died. traffic behind me had started to accelerate but suddenly had to take evasive action to avoid hitting my stalled vehicle. the group of traffic that was behind me was able to get around me leaving me sitting dead in the middle of the highway with my 4-way flashers on. further traffic was not paying attention and almost rear ended me while i was stalled. i pushed this 6,700 lbs. 4x4 truck off the highway myself to the shoulder and was nearly hit a couple of time during the process. after a very long cool down period, the engine finally restarted. this time there was an ses indicator and i proceeded to drive to autozone where they said it was the

I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd with the 8.1l engine with an intermittent stalling problem as described by others. the engine will stall at various times, while driving, sitting at stop lights, etc. the problem has been an issue for several years. i noted the recall issued by gm, but my vehicles vin was 5000 past the scope of the recall. the truck was built in november 2000 and delivered in mid-december 2000. i paid to have the crankcase sensor repaired and it appears to have resolved the problem. the pickup has just over 50,000 miles. *tr

Same problem as ea06016. my 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd with the 8.1l gas engine experienced the intermittent stalling described in ea06016. it was built just after the recall date so gm would not do anything other than offer to charge me for the repair. the main safety problem is the software bug that doesn't record the bad crankshaft position sensor. the first 20 or so incidents were annoying. when the truck started shutting down while going down a 10% grade on a twisting mountain road it got scary. luckily i wasn't pulling the 15000 pound trailer that i often pull. the problem only occurs at one particular engine temperature and it doesn't set a dtc. it took me three months of searching the web to find the problem. gm was of no help diagnosing or fixing the problem even with the recall on the identical trucks that were built just prior to mine. my truck had the position sensor replaced in 2002 with the same design part as the original. the replaced part lasted till 2008. searching the web shows that most of the 2000-2002 8.1l engines develop this problem at some point. gm makes a lot of money selling unneeded parts and charging $85 to read non-existent dtcs. an 8.1l engine is meant to pull large loads. when the engine dies the truck loses power steering and brakes. my truck died at least 50 times before i was able to fix it. i wouldn't let my wife drive it because she would most likely have killed someone with it. it died going around the same corner 5 days in a row. turning a 7000 pound truck without power steering is a bit of a challenge. i am a test engineer with 30 years of experience. without the help of the internet this problem is nearly impossible to diagnose. gm is of no help. the problem sets no codes and the vehicle runs fine if it warms up or cools down from the one temperature. i replaced my sensor and the vehicle now runs fine. there are thousands of more vehicles out there with the same problem. hopefully you will re-open your investigation. *tr

Engine stall while driving. the engine stalls without notice while driving and at times will not start for several tries. after using a personal diagnostic tool i found the problem to be a crankshaft position sensor malfunction. this is definitely a safety problem because when the engine stalls at 75mph down the interstate and no power steering to help you safely exit the roadway with minimal breaking ability, this should be a concern and recall! the part at a gm dealership is 110.00 and the charge to get it replaced is not known at this time. *tr
