While performing an oil change i noticed severe brake line corrosion. the truck was immediately taken to my local mechanic for inspection and is now having all brake lines replaced. thankfully the brake lines did not fail while i was driving or towing a trailer. i have a 1989 chevy silverado 2500 that hasn't had corrosion problems like this newer one. after some googling i found out that there is an investigation in to this matter and that many owners have had their brakes fail while driving. the nhtsa needs to step up and hold gm accountable. sure, it will be an expensive recall but if gm does the right thing it will show that they care about the safety of americans and will make many brand-loyal customers happy. this matter is very serious, especially considering what the majority of these hd trucks are used for...hauling, towing, etc.

Lost sudden brake pressure. have no warning light. found a pool of brake fluid under middle of truck bed this morning. a brake line appears to have ruptured above the gas tank. i have read of numerous complaints with this same issue. thank god i discovered the problem at home and did not continue to drive this morning.

This vehicle is experiencing an issue with the abs module in which at slow braking speeds the brakes will not stop the vehicle correctly. there was a recall issued prior to this date for over 800,000 silverado trucks including the years 99-2002 for this exact issue. i contacted my dealership and i was informed that my truck is not covered by this recall even though it is demonstrating the exact symptoms described in the national recall by gm. *tr

On august 3, 2012 i was driving my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. at some point when i pressed the brake pedal it went to the very bottom and brakes did not work at all. the situation was very serious, since i was driving on the busy highway, state route 287 in nj. fortunately, i was able to slow down the vehicle without an accident. because i use this vehicle for work, i took it to the auto shop and had it fixed as soon as possible. at the shop i found out that the vehicle is completely rusted underneath and all of my brake lines broke because of it. they had to replace 40 feet of brake lines and refill the brake fluid that was lost as a result of the broken lines. i was also informed by the mechanic that not only the brake lines, but fuel lines are rusted too. all of that has to be replaced. moreover, the vehicle?s springs and chassis are rusted too. i was told that the vehicle needs a special protective coating underneath to avoid that it falls apart. at this time i'm talking to gmc company regarding my issue, which does not mean that they will cover my expenses or repair the vehicle on recall basis. i've been told that they will do the investigation, and will contact me soon. i feel responsible to report such an unfortunate situation, so it will be investigated further, in order for others to avoid any accidents or deaths. *tr

I want to add another case to your investigation of brake line failures on gm trucks. i live in maryland and have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd with only 40,000 miles on it. my brake lines rusted through in three separate incidents this year. first, the front wheel speed sensors/abs system failed in april, 2010. next, in july, the front part of the lines gave way when being backed out of the garage after getting an oil change. that garage replaced the front part of the brake lines only. finally in september, the rear brake lines rusted through right in my driveway. luckily, i was not traveling at speed for either of these events, but it was a major expense and inconvenience, especially having it happen twice like that. i also had the line on the power steering fluid cooler rust through in the april repair, and there is way more rust in general on the undercarriage than there should be. the body and engine are just fine. i hope your investigation leads to a recall.

While towing an 8000lb horse trailer at slow speeds, i attempted to brake and the brake line at the driver side front wheel broke and leaked, leaving me on the expressway with no stopping power. all brake lines were completely rusted out with less than 50,000 miles on a 2002 well maintained, recently checked over 2500hd. totally unacceptable situation, and one that sounds commonplace. *tr

Driving down highway, applied brakes to feel the pedal go to floor. able to stop and inspect after some distance. rear steel brake line under truck bed had corroded through, and with a push of the pedal, brake fluid sprayed everywhere. had to have line replaced from diverter box under cab to rear crossover at driver rear wheel, badly corroded! now it is march of 2012 (107,000 miles), and the front lines from the master cylinder to diverter are leaking as well. thankfully i noticed before driving. i am having the bad line replaced, and i am looking for a stainless steel replacement for all lines!

Was driving on road when driver pulled in front of me, i had to a quickly applied brakes to slow down. when pushed down the brake pedal just went soft and mushed down. no braking ability was possible. had to swerve into on coming traffic to avoid major collision. other cars swerved out out of my way. ~300 yard down the road the truck finally came to rolling stop using lower gear auto transmission to slow truck down. after stopping saw brake fluid pour out of front engine compartment. upon return home saw no sign of leaks in driveway. also there was not visible loss of brake fluids level nor softening of brake pedal prior to this sudden and complete loss bakes. fluids are checked atleast monthly. so brake line or lines ruptured suddenly without warning. the potential for disaster is huge. the hydraulic brake lines appear to have to thinned out from excessive corrosion and then burst (not leak) when heavy brake pressure is applied which is the worst time for brakes to fail. this is personal use vehicle not used for commercial work. however it is driven and used in the snow belt in the winter. if you own one of these trucks and live in the snow belt completely inspect replace your lines before someone dies. failure point was in front area under hood near left wheel right on bracket where 4 lines bend. these are large vehicles and the failure gave no obvious warning signs prior to failure.
07/06/200967000
While driving down the road the vehicle dies out, and quits running. it then becomes hard to steer and stop. it takes about 2 to 5 minutes before starting back up, sometimes maybe even longer. it dies out any where from 2 to 3 times a day, depending on how long and far i am driving. the speed varies from 10 mph up to 75 mph.

While pulling out of parking lot of inspection station on to side street, on slight hill, i depressed my break pedal and it went all the way to the floor. the truck slowly stopped even though i was only doing approximatly 5 mph. when i got out and looked under the truck i saw brake fluid coming from under the driver side of the truck. the inspector had told me that the lines looked to be corroded and i would need to get them replaced in a few years. once the brake failure occured he came and looked again and was shocked that it was an instant breaking.

Upon applying the brakes, the brake pedal dropped to the floor and all braking was lost. driver was able to downshift and use the emergency brake to stop safely. upon investigation of the failure, the steel brake lines located below the drivers seat, under the cab, were found to be heavily corroded and ruptured due to the corrosion causeing a complete loss of braking power.

Vehicle exhibited hard starting for a few days, and then was found with a large puddle of fuel under it in the morning, and was continuing to leak. upon inspection, all steel fuel lines, at every point of connection, and at every brace, have thick, scaly, flaking rust. the corrosion is severe. in most locations, nearing the point of failure, and in at least one spot, resulted in a pin hole leak, with a significant quantity of fuel leaking onto the vehicle and the ground. the steel brake lines were also found to have a similar degree of corrosion, and will probably fail in the near term.

Excessive brake line rust and failure with loss of service brakes on gm light trucks. i recently had an experience where the metal brake lines broke unexpectedly on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd light truck. the brake pedal went to the floor while attempting to stop at a neighborhood stop sign. the vehicle had to be stopped from approximately 10mph using the parking brake and downshifting. no accident occurred. a local service station found that most all of the vehicle's brake lines were excessively rusted. all brake lines were replaced at a cost of $650.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd nearly caught fire yesterday. a leak developed in the power brake booster/hydro-boost system and power steering fluid was leaking onto my hot exhaust manifold. smoke was pouring from under my hood. i suspect a small fire because of the amount of smoke. by the time i pulled off the road and opened the hood all i saw was smoke from something leaking on the manifold. i got online and found this recall information for 2004-2005 chevy trucks but not 2002. i wanted to inform you that there may be a need to recall 2002 silverado trucks as well. researching dieselplace.com and dieselpage.com this problem is common and widespread. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- march 2005 dear chevrolet customer: this notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act. reason for this recall: general motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2004 model year chevrolet kodiak and certain 2004 and 2005 model year chevrolet avalanche, express, silverado, and suburban vehicles. on some of these vehicles, the hydraulic brake booster

Without warning my 2002 chevy 2500hd lost it's brakes almost causing an accident. i found that the brake lines had rusted under the left wheel well. i called chevy and they stated that it was not a known issue. they refused to help or discuss the issue with me. i asked to speak to a supervisor and the told me that there was no one else i could speak to. after doing some research online i found that it has been widely reported.

I am the original owner of a 2002 chevy 2500hd pickup with 65,000 miles. i experienced a total failure of the brake system on 28 aug 2010 due to a ruptured brake line. the leaking line was in the vicinity of the driver's door and all lines were heavily corroded. leak was large enough to fully drain the brake fluid reservoir. failure happened while parking truck at home. no accident occurred, but i was lucky. this failure could have caused a fatal accident. repair of this defect will require replacement of all brake lines on the truck. in my opinion, the root cause of this brake failure is a poor choice of materials (plain steel) for the brake lines. chevy should have used a corrosion resistant material.

2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd without warning, exhibits very soft brake pedal accompanied by sensation that brake pedal goes to the floor, apparent activation of abs, and difficulty stopping safely. original equipment front brake pads and rotors are inspected by service facility and deemed acceptable for continued use at this time. rear disk brake pad and rotor inspected and deemed unserviceable due to premature failure apparently caused by extensive, progressive undercarriage corrosion that was observable from delivery date of vehicle when purchased new. rear brake pad inability to float due to extensive corrosion caused premature rear pad and rear rotor failure. brake lines are also observed to be corroding in an excessive, premature manner as are vehicle frame and trailer hitch structural components. observation of similarly situated pick-up trucks manufactured by others do not demonstrate corrosion of this excessive magnitude.

I was using my chevy silverado to tow my horse trailer (horse on board) to a weekend event. by the time i arrived at the camp ground i realized that my truck's brakes were not as firm as they should be and the brake pedal was getting lower and lower. i left my trailer at the camp and drove my truck to a nearby garage. a mechanic located a leaking brake line directly beneatr the driver's side door and noted that all the visable brake lines looked corroded. i topped off the brake fluid at the garage and after my camping weekend i was able to carefully drive the truck and trailer home but i had to use the trailer's brake controller to increase the trailer braking to assist the truck braking. during the following week the truck was taken to a gm dealership and they did a so called repair by splicing new pieces of aluminum brake line into the corroded original lines.

Dear nhtsa, i was reading this article (i.e. link http://trucks.about.com/b/2010/04/08/brake-line-corrosion-suspected-in-gm-trucks.htm) and this prompted me to contact you. i have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 pickup truck. due to corroded and excessive rusted-out brake lines, i experienced total brake line failure causing me to get into an accident. this happened in november of 2008 and; i only had 50,825 miles on my vehicle at the time. luckily for me, i was (for the most part) in stop and go traffic. if i wasn't, i truly believe things could have been much worse resulting in severe injury or death. this happened on route 495 north, a three-lane highway near lowell massachusetts. as it was, i rear-ended a pickup truck in front of me that subsequently hit the vehicle in front of her. fortunately... no one was seriously hurt. i don't even want to think what might of happened if i was doing 65 - 70 mph and had to avoid another vehicle or brake quickly. i contacted gm about this but never received a reply back. my total failure of brakes was verified at the scene by the tow truck driver (certified ma mechanic), the state police person, my insurance company, and lannan chevrolet of lowell who had to replace every bit of brake line(s).

I am the original owner of a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd pickup truck. on 12/11/09 while driving the truck, i applied the brakes and the pedal went completely to the floor, leaving me with no brakes. fortunately, i was going very slow at the time and was able to roll to a slow stop with no damage or injury. i found that my brake lines were rusty with a hole entirely through one place. i did an internet search on 'silverado and 'rusty brake lines' and found numerous other irate owners with the same problem. i contacted general motors and was told i would need to have a dealer inspect the truck before any additional action could be taken. this is the result: i was charged $175.09 for hauling the vehicle 20 miles to the nearest dealer and 'inspecting it; yes, the lines were rusted out as i had told them; general motors will provide no further action because the problem may be the result of 'low mileage'; and the dealer wants to replace the brake lines for $1000.00. i live in north carolina and have driven and worked on vehicles for over 50 years and i have never before had a hole rusted in a brake line. the sudden and unexpected loss of brakes has to be a deadly disaster waiting to happen. *tr

My 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd was having a problem with the abs system activating at slow speeds when the wheels were not actually sliding. although the wheels were acting exactly as described in recall bulletin 05068c, i was told by the dealer that my truck was not covered even if the problem was due to front wheel speed sensor corrosion as described in the recall. i also called the gm customer assistance center at 800-630-2438 where they also said my truck is not covered even though the vin is within the brackets in the recall. i was given a case number of 71-774131746. i took my truck to larson chevrolet in superior, wi on november 10, 2009 where they inspected my front wheels and found the corrosion described in the recall. i had them repair the corrosion at my expense. i then contacted customer assistance again and they agreed to forward my case to a district specialist. after a couple conversations with the district specialist isaac i was told that my truck would not be covered because 3/4 ton trucks were excluded. no reason for excluding 3/4 ton trucks was given. it seems to me that gm was in error when 3/4 ton trucks were excluded because my truck had the exact problem described in the recall. i would like to see the recall expanded to include 3/4 ton trucks and to have my expenses of $206.47 reimbursed. *tr

After traveling on the highway for sixty miles, the truck was baked for traffic at highway exit. the bake pedal went down almost to the floor. the truck did slow down, but braking was not normal. upon inspection it was found that the brake lines coming the master cylinder to the abs and from the abs to the front brakes were rusted and one line had a hole and was leaking. four brake lines were replaced. *tr

The rear brake line on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd rusted out and failed while towing my fifth wheel camper.fortunatly the camper brakes were functioning properly and i was able to stop without incident. i removed and replaced the rear brake line when i got the truck home.as i was pumping the brakes to bleed the air out of the new line the right front line failed.it was at this time that i realized how lucky i was to have avoided a potentially deadly incident. upon inspection of the rest of the lines i found them all to be rusted to the point that i will be replacing all of the lines on the truck. *tr

Silverado 2500 hd v8 brake & rotor replacement 37,800 miles we purchased a brand new 2002 chevrolet silverado hd 4 x 4 from fitzgerald auto mall. the truck was pampered, no rough off road excursions, even kept it in the garage. with only 37,800 miles we were literally shocked to discover all four rotors not only had significant rust but metal was actually chipping, flaking, and crumbling from the rotors. all four rotors had to be replaced along with the brake pads. the pads had worn but not [repeat not] down to the wear sensors and were replaced for safety reasons. the cost for the repair was $1,150.00. we have other vehicles none of them manufactured by gm and never experienced this type of wear or damage to rotors. the only safety recall we were advised of affected the tailgate cables. the tailgate cables prematurely corroded and failed. the national highway traffic safety administration should be alerted as this poses a significant safety risk for anyone who unwittingly experiences this problem. left undetected these rotors would have failed causing an absolute and sudden loss of braking capacity. if ford motor company had to accept responsibility for recalling millions of unsafe firestone tires - why hasn't this problem been addressed by gm? *tr

2002 chevrolet 2500hd pickup truck. while my daughter was driving the truck, both steel brake lines from the master cylinder failed causing total loss of brakes. truck was towed to dunlap-johnson chevrolet co.,inc. 919 e liberty st , york, sc 29745-2689 (803) 792-4152. chevrolet was called at 1-800-222-1020 and case # 71-742-720900 was opened. i was contacted on july 21 by caroline lucero from chevrolet who stated that the brake lines failed because of environmental conditions in the ne united states. having brake lines that can fail without warning causing the brake pedal to go to the floorboard while providing no stopping effort is a very dangerous situation. thankfully no one was injured in this instance; however i suspect that the brake line failure is premature based on the age and mileage of the vehicle and possibly caused by defective materials. i am saving the brake lines in case they are wanted for testing or inspection. *tr

I own a 2002 chevy 2500 hd and the last couple of months i noticed the anti-lock brakes activate at low speed. i thought this was related to winter snow/ice but this continues on dry pavement. i called chevy customer service and was advised there were no listed recalls for this vin. found nhtsa recall 05v379000 & action # pe05020 lists exact symptoms of vehicle every time breaks are applied at low speed. estimated time and cost to repair 2 hours at aprox $180.00 a chevy dealer was called and i was advised they cannot repair without authorized recall per the vin. this safety issue should apply to the listed vin. *tr

Brake line failure on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd. i was very fortunate that the line broke at home while i was parking my trailer. apparently there is a major problem with the steel lines rusting out prematurely. if you go on the web and look up brake line failure for this year vehicle, you will find many. *tr

Brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs control unit and from the abs control unit to the front wheel brakes are rusted through. this occurred on june 9, 2008. the vehicle is only six years old and the brake line should not rust through that quickly. this is a dangerous condition as all of the brake fluid is pumped out of the master cylinder and you then lose all braking on the vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. while driving approximately 20 mph and approaching a stop sign, the antilock braking system began to pulsate when the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was unable to stop and the failure persisted. the contact took the vehicle to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the failure was due to corrosion of the antilock brake system. she was informed that there was a recall for this specific component and was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer stated that her vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the manufacturer confirmed that the vehicle was excluded and stated that they were not liable for the repairs. the current mileage was 38,000 and failure mileage was 37,000.

2002 chevrolet k2500hd , the anti-lock brakes activate at slow speeds during gentle braking. same trouble as described in nhtsa campaign # 05v379000 / chevy recall # 05068. i have the same symptoms as described in this document but my dealer and the gm cust. serv. line both advise that my truck is not included in the recall. service manager at local chevrolet dealership said $230 for the same work as stated in the recall plus $80 for each sensor if they break when being removed which they seem prone to do. or he said that i could pull the fuse to the abs system, but they could not. gm customer service contact said they could not help with the break problem but offered a coupon for other service ie> oil change. *jb

When applying the brakes when coming to a stop, the antilock brake system activates, causing the vehicle to take much longer to stop, and feel as though it may not stop. the problem became progressively worse and was a safety issue which needed to be corrected. although this problem is well documented for chevy vehicles (case #05v379000), we did not receive a recall notice. we took the vehicle to a dealer, who confirmed that the vin was not one of those recalled. i called chevy, who also confirmed that the vin was not included in the recall. because it was a safety hazard which could have resulted in an accident, we had the vehicle fixed. the dealer charged us to correct it, with the same exact solution as in the recall. the antilock brake sensors were removed, cleaned and put back in, correcting the problem. it seems as though the 2002 chevy silverado hd pickup was excluded from the recall, even though the same problem exists as in the other silverado pickups. it is even more of a safety hazard since it is a heavier truck. chevy needs to recall all of the vehicles that have this same problem, or at least cover the expenses for those who bring it in for service for the same issue as recalled in other vehicles. *tr
