Anti-lock brakes free wheel when trying to stop going from pavement to slick or washboard road surface. the stopping distance is not reliable. i disconnected the antilock brake system because it wasn't reliable. the dealer could not document the problem because it was intermittent. this is a major defect and nearly caused several accidents before i pulled the abs fuse. chevrolet sent me a video on abs when i reported the problem to them implying that i didn't know how abs worked. i know when abs doesn't work and the car freewheels nearly into the car ahead of you. chevrolet should repair this problem to prevent future catastrophic accidents and injuries.

Iwas driving my son to an orthodonic appointment mid morning, good weather conditions. there was red light ahead with two cars stopped. when i braked, my vehicle would not stop, and i hit the car in front of mine, which then hit the vehicle in front of it. it felt like i did not have brakes that functioned properly. it was confusing to me and i guess i blamed it on the pavement. now the same thing has happened to me husband and i now know there is definatly a brake problem. my husband had unplugged the abs system, on the advice of the chevrolet dealership. we're both concerned about our insurance and would like some help if they try to raise our rates. we're also out insurance deductibles, not to mention all the nights i could not sleep thinking about the accident. please feel free to call me if you have any questions. maribel kuehl

The abs system on my suburban failed to stop my vehicle in time to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front of me making a right hand turn. i was not speeding and the weather conditions were great. i also had plenty of space between both vehicles. i braked, the abs system took over, and my vehicle would not stop. i simply ran right into the back of the vehicle in front of me. i was aware that something was wrong and complained to the dealership and my insurance company about not being able to stop. i did not occur to me to file a complaint with the govenment until now. i am concerned about my insurance coverage going up or even being cancelled. my wife had the same thing happen to her 12/1/98. exactly the same problem and i will file another complaint on her accident. please send me any documentation i'll need to prove my case. also, when my vehicle was being repaired in june, even the chevy people advised me to unplug the abs system. they all told me that even they had unplugged theirs. that should tell you something right there about their abs system. and i'm out $1000.00 in insurance deductibles too. your help is greatly appreciated. sincerely, scott a. kuehl

I was traveling at a low rate of speed(30 mph), on dry pavement, and was confronted with a line of vehicles that came to an abrupt stop. i engaged the abs brake systen on my 1993 suburban only to continue forward and contact the vehicle in front of me. this abs brake system, based on my experience, is marginal to poor at best relative to response and pedeal feel. regards, paul j. leeser

Abs system engaged when brake pedal was depressed on dry roadway, resulting in no brakes on vehicle and causing collision with vehicle in front of mine.
11/24/1995 | 01/01/1994
The anti-lock brakes failed the first time on a bright sunny dry day , i was unable to bring my suburban to a stop with plenty of distance between me and the vehicle in front of me. i was cited for unassured clear distance since no skid marks or other explanation could be given at the time. we have had several incidents and close calls since the first accident. we have not had the anti-lock system replaced and were unaware that the unit might cause problems until we recently saw the recall which explains perfectly the type of incidents we have had to try to stop the vehicle. we definately want the nhtsa to investigate further to pursue the anti-lock recall on the 1993 suburbans. the transmission failure was just after the warranty period expired. i complained bitterly to gm customer service and all but $350 was covered in the replacement of the original transmission. the failure occurred with the gearshift in the overdrive position. the transmission could not maintain a lock in the overdrive position and would constantly shift back and forth between 3rd and overdrive gear.

Brakes applied, abs seemed to start working, then a 'release' seemed to happen that caused vehicle to require much longer stopping distance. they seemed to 'release' and even though standing on the brakes the vehicle took much too long to stop. abs was disconnected 1.5 years ago because of this being very unsafe. dealer had no idea what was wrong and no fix. we felt very unsafe as it was and it happened many times. could not make it happen to show dealer. they seemed unaware of the problem.

My suburban has developed a peculiar problem that has left even the dealerships completely clueless!!! the engine heats up to about 180 f (still less than the mid point on the guage) after a couple of hours of driving -- this is quite normal. if we stop and turn the engine off, the vehicle will not start! we have to wait a couple of hours while the engine cools off to about 160 f, and it starts up just fine. we only noticed this since we were on a long cross country drive. the problem is entirely predictable, and we had to plan on two hour stops during our trip. we even drove straight to a dealership in raleigh after straight 6 hour drives so that they could see and diagnose the problem -- but they were completely stumped. i would like chevrolet to help diagnose and fix this problem. the abs module failed without any prior warning. one moment the breaks were fine, the next we were flooring the break pedal and the abs light was on. the mechanics had to go through several attempts at replacing the unit ($1200 for the unit itself). this problem sounds exactly like the issue investigated in 1992-1995 suburbans. i am surprised that the recall was limited to the lighter suvs only -- a decision based on cost (most probably). it stands to reason that the problem would be more critical in heavier vehicles.

During all kinds of weather conditions the abs braking system has failed to stop the vehicle, twice causing a rear end accident. during a hard braking situation when on dry pavement, or any braking condition on wet pavement the brakes have been applied and they grab and then release causing the vehicle to continue moving forward without completely stopping. the vehicle has been taken to many chevrolet dealerships and independent shops for repair and been inspected or repaired with complete brake rebuilds with absolutely no improvement in stopping abilities. this model vehicle should absolutely have been recalled shortly after manufacture. there is so much documentation that these vehicles have this problem that this agency should be ashamed of not forcing a recall for repairs or complete redesign of the braking systems. the minor recall andfix of the brake-booster output rod were a joke and never should have been allowed as a fix. the excuse chevrolet uses that it is a brake pedal feel that is the problem is inexcusable and irresponsible. i have been a professional truck driver (class a cdl with all endorsements) and mechanic and have driven several other makes of large heavy passenger trucks and suv's with abs braking and never encountered this problem with any type of vehicle. *tr

Abs fails on uneven surfaces, such as washboard roads and when hitting bumps during braking. abs perform poorly in most conditions, including dry pavement. they do provide some benefit on snow/ice. however, my abs has now failed and overall braking performance is better. this system, and the logic in the controller, need significant changes. *jb

This is my second submission of a complaint. the first one was odi id 522933. i resubmit because i am intensly frustrated with the apparent lack of action on the part of gm regarding my year vehicle. on 7/21/99, a large gmc recall was announced pertaining to abs problems. my year suburban was excluded pending further investigation. gm stated they were working to address customer satisfaction issues with my year vehicle. they have done nothing with me along these lines. my vehicle continues to experience many of the same symptoms that are described in your current complaint submissions for 1993 suburbans. what is being done?? this is a very serious situation. is gm just waiting until the 92 thru 94s just rot away and are no longer a problem. my vehicle is in excellent shape for 187,000 and i intended to drive it for several more years but the anxiety is getting the best of me. who else can i write or call? this is serious. please contact me on my day number - 512 868 0374. *ak

Over the entire time that we have owned this vehicle, the brakes and the abs system have not operated reliably. whenever the vehicle is being driven on an irregular or wet street (even at low speeds, below 30mph), and the brakes are applied, the brake pedal will go to the floor and all braking effect vanishes momentarily. this definately involves the abs system, because there is the characteristic vibration of the pedal when the system is activated. abs activation during these episodes is inappropriate, ineffective, and dangerous to the occupants of the vehicle. *ak

This has occurred since the truck was new. it appears as if the abs is failing on rough grades. it has happened mostly when coming to a stop at intersections. the dealers (3) have all not been able to reproduce the problem. when it happens, the pedal will go to the floor and the abs makes a grinding noise. you have to pump the pedal 2 or 3 times to restore the brakes. this does not happen every time the vehicle stops. i feel sure that this will result in a recall now that your agency is involved. thank you and have a nice day.*ak

If surface is rough when braking we often get a surge forward when the anti-locks kick in. such as when the tires bounce slightly while braking. this has caused us to go into an intersection while trying to stop and it extends the stopping distance. we have had this problem since time of purchase but are told by chevy that there is no recall thus no corrective action available. *mjs
05/14/1993 | |||
There is a delayed action in the abs system. the pedal goes partially to the floor. vehicle goes in a free wheel before abs brakes engage. this has happene deven on dry ground if the vehicle hits any defect in the road, causing the wheel to skip and activating the abs system. vehicle was involved in a collision due to abs failure.
07/01/1993 | 03/01/1993
The problem with the abs brakes is ongoing, there is no fix. when going down a slight incline on the road, and if the road has some slite ribbing or wash board effect, the brakes fail completely if used in a panic stop situation, even if one continues to push the brake pedal as instructed with abs. also medium ie 50 mph panic stops also have the same effect. the problem seems to be a long hesatation before the abs starts its cycle of braking, and any road irregularities or road sand increases this hesitation before the abs starts its braking cycle. it should be noted that the master cylinder was changed early in 1993 to no avail. it would appear to be a software problem in the abs logic controller. *ak

*ak
